LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England – For Georgia Hall, the fairytale finish wasn't meant to be, though she will certainly have memories and photos to cherish.
Hall returned to Royal Lytham and St. Annes, site of her major championship triumph eight years ago, with infant son Conor and fiancé Paul Dunne by her side. It was a lovely family event, even if her golf at the 2026 AIG Women's British Open didn't get her to the weekend. Hall shot 76-72 to finish at 6 over for the championship. The cut fell at 4 over, with 66 players advancing.
"I had a picture with him on 18 and that will definitely be my screen saver," said Hall. "I have my whole life there with Paul. It's lovely. It's a shame he's not a bit older, but I'm really grateful that I kind of made it back here and everything went well enough in the birth to allow me to play."
It was a tough week for moms, in fact, as only Alison Lee (4 over) has a Saturday tee time. Royal Lytham was the site of Catriona Matthew's incredible feat in 2009, when she triumphed only 11 weeks after giving birth to daughter Sophie.
Perhaps the most shocking player to miss the cut this week was defending champion Miyu Yamashita, who made a quadruple-bogey eight on the par-4 18th after bunker trouble and a triple on the par-4 third. Yamashita shot 77 on Friday to finish at 7 over for the tournament. It marked her first missed cut in a major since the 2024 British Open.

One player I did not include here was Travis Hunter, who is quite likely to play more cornerback than wide receiver this season (key distinction) for the Jaguars. As a wide receiver only, however, I'm a big fan and think he could compete for a top-10 spot if he got the developmental reps he needs.
Since he entered the league in 2023, Puka Nacua leads all wide receivers with 600 or more routes in yards, first downs and successful targets per route run. Every season he gets a little bit better, with 2025 being the year he added more vertical separation to his bag.

People over the last couple of weeks have been ***** on each other about their college teams getting a sponsorship patch on their jerseys a la soccer teams. Yes, it is a great way to earn extra money and also a decent collaboration with the right companies. Whether or not Nebraska will get there, well that remains to be seen.
IF Nebraska goes that route, I don't want it to be just one patch. I want to go full-on NASCAR uniform style. I want as many ***** Nebraska based companies on there as possible. Steer straight into the skid. Make it look as ridiculous as possible, with Matt Rhule having to do post-game interviews thanking all of our sponsors. It would be great to do so much shameless plugging for our "fly-over" state.

The NFLPA's P.R. push for grass fields should focus less on making a broad-brush effort to shame the owners into choosing a better surface and more on getting specific teams to flip. That effort, as previously explained, should start with the Seahawks, who are in the process of getting a new owner.
On Tuesday, a pair of Seattle veterans made the case for grass during training-camp press conferences.
Defensive lineman Leonard Williams was asked whether seeing temporary grass at Lumen Field for the World Cup made him wish the grass would remain permanently.
"For sure," Williams told reporters, "I think the whole NFL felt that way. We obviously prefer to be on grass. It's less impact, better on the body. I understand there's a lot of things that go into having grass in the stadium that I don't fully understand yet, but if it was up to a player and it just came down to grass or turf, we obviously prefer grass."
Receiver Cooper Kupp was initially more concise. "That would be sweet," he said with a laugh.

For any of you who've listened to our On This Week or Roker Rewind episodes of the podcast, you'll know just how much we believe the history of the club matters. There have been so many people who've contributed to the story of Sunderland ***** ociation Football Club, and the ones that have played a positive role deserve to be acknowledged and remembered.
For a long time, however, the club's often seemed a bit reluctant to outwardly celebrate our past too much.
While there was an attempt to acknowledge the achievements of yesterday when the Stadium Of Light opened, when bars were named after former greats – followed by the installation of the Stokoe statue a few years later – we've seemed pretty reluctant to outwardly celebrate the club's history.
Of course, there are reasons for that. For a few years, the club was rightly more concerned with keeping the lights on rather than shining a light on things that had happened decades ago, but now the club's in a more healthy position, we've seen the past being embraced – and rightly so.
How much this had to do with David Bruce is impossible to know for sure, it's a credible ***** umption that quite a lot was sparked by him. His departure was a shame from that perspective – that knowledge and connection at boardroom level is vital – and we hope that connection doesn't disappear now he's at Sheffield Wednesday.

This afternoon, the San Francisco Giants announced that they placed Victor Bericoto on the 10-day IL "with an oblique strain" and taking his spot on the roster is 25-year old Grant McCray, in the majors for the first time in 2026.
McCray had surgery back in June to repair his left hamate bone and up to that point he'd been hitting just .237/.360/.370. He made just three starts since being activated, but he's 4-for-8 with a homer, a double, a strikeout and a walk. He also stole 3 bases and didn't get caught. McCray's defense will come in handy. His bat remains the central question.
He'll be taking Victor Bericoto's roster spot. An oblique strain is a tough injury for a hitter and it's a real shame to see such a young player have some quite positive momentum halted by the injury bug. Such is baseball, I suppose. Then again, it's remarkable to consider how much these two players mirror each other. In 59 plate appearances, the 24-year old Bericoto had 15 strikeouts against just 1 walk but 4 homers and 3 doubles. In McCray's debut age-23 season, he swatted 5 homers in 130 plate appearances and had 56 strikeouts against just 6 walks. Not exactly the same, but close enough in terms of those three true outcomes. Although, it's absolutely worth mentioning that Bericoto's line in a much smaller sample is much, much better than what McCray did in 2024: .293/.305/.552 vs. .202/.238/.379.
Anyway, it will be interesting to see how the outfield defense aligns late in games because McCray is an outstanding defender in center and right and with Jung Hoo Lee and Drew Gilbert on the roster (at least for now), his playing time seems a little fuzzy.
The bigger surprise is the return of Keaton Winn, who comes off the IL after being seemingly lost to the vagaries of Tony Vitello's managing. But, nope. After hitting the IL on June 8th, he returned and rehabbed on July 3 and made 3 total appearances across the Giants minor leagues (who were playing home games in Northern California). He struck out 3 in three innings while walking 2 and allowing just a hit. He ******* ps Carson Whisenhunt back to the minors because, as Alex Pavlovic points out, "With the All-Star break, he wasn't going to be in line to start for at least a week."

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has "concrete evidence" linking leaders of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to recent war crimes in the Sudanese region of Darfur, the ICC's deputy chief prosecutor says.
Nazhat Shameem Khan told the BBC the ICC had reached a "breakthrough" in its investigation into the massacres of civilians in the cities of el-Fasher and el-Geneina.
"It may take time for justice to develop, to be brought to the court, but we will get there," Khan said, adding that RSF leaders have also been linked to crimes against humanity.
The siege and takeover of el-Fasher marked one of the bloodiest episodes in the ongoing war between the RSF and Sudan's army.
More than 6,000 people were killed in el-Fasher as the RSF seized the city in October last year, the United Nations says, while the paramilitary group is accused of carrying out a similar massacre in el-Geneina.

More than 60 "ghost signs", some dating back 150 years, have been recorded by "citizen scientists" in Northampton.
Ghost signs are faded painted shop and business signs, many for companies that no longer exist, and provide "a direct link to our past".

After bouncing around the league, Landry Shamet seems to have found a long-term home with the New York Knicks. Before the 2025-26 season, Shamet was in limbo because he was competing for a contract. When Malcolm Brogdon abruptly retired, Shamet got his opportunity to play for the Knicks.
Thankfully for Shamet, head coach Mike Brown valued his impact as a shooter and a positive defender. He played a crucial role as the season progressed, eventually becoming one of the first players off the bench during their championship run as the team's resident knockdown shooter.
Shamet might have only averaged six points per game in the entirety of the Playoffs, but he was a key member of the rotation. He shone mostly in the Knicks' Eastern Conference Finals series against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was tremendous for the Knicks, as he shot at a historic 91.7% clip, making 11 of his 12 three-point attempts against Cleveland.
He was still quite impactful in the NBA Finals, but most of the spotlight went to Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and OG Anunoby. Despite that, Shamet knew how to play his role, which has now earned him a spot on the team for years to come.

Spain’s journey in World Cup 2026 continues as La Roja secured safe passage to the quarter-finals thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win against Iberian rivals Portugal in Dallas on Monday’s Round of 16 clash. After a great back-and-forth battle in the first half, La Roja established their superiority in the second and sealed the victory in added time thanks to a Mikel Merino winner ***** isted by Ferran Torres to set up a quarter-final against the USA or Belgium on Friday.
If the opening 45 minutes were a wondeful back-and-forth battle between two very talented squads, the second half showed exactly why Spain are a team and Portugal are a collection of individuals: La Roja were far superior in the final period, and deservedly won the game at the end after dominating in every phase of the game.
The much-anticipated duel between Nuno Mendes and Lamine Yamal was a lot of fun: both players were up for it and both came out on top in different moments, and it’s a real shame that it only lasted 55 minutes as Mendes was forced off with an injury.
Yamal’s performance was far from perfect, but he was still involved in plenty of dangerous moments and did a lot of damage as a playmaker. With better finishing around him, he could have easily gotten an ***** ist in this one.
Luis de la Fuente isn’t exactly beloved by Barcelona fans, but his impact on this game is undeniable: two crucial substitutions (Ferran Torres and Mikel Merino) that changed the feel of the contest and ultimately won it at the end. Sorry, everyone, but he’s a good coach.

Folarin Balogun never, ever should have been given a red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The 64th-minute red card given to the USA’s star player was an utter joke, and everyone knows it. A situation that started with a bad call on the pitch turned into something entirely different as FIFA president Gianni Infantino proved, once more, what a ******* less leader he is by allowing the World Cup to be blatantly interfered with by U.S. President Donald Trump.
We’re left with one of the most staggering, shameful, corrupt situations playing out in broad daylight — and it’s effectively tainted the entire World Cup as a result. It’s a case where the ends don’t justify the means, and even though the correct decision was reached, how that decision was reached is worthy of global condemnation.
If you somehow haven’t seen the initial red card, here’s the play in question which kicked this all off.
If we break this moment down into its parts there’s simply no understanding how any professional referee would see this as a red. Balogun has his hands on defender Tarik Muharemović, but his eyes are locked on the ball. There’s no way to really intuit that Muharemović was going to slow down, which initiated the contact, and Balogun’s right leg only goes behind the defender because he’s trying to play the ball.
You can watch every single game at the World Cup and see 20 incidents like this in a game. A foul is going to be called the vast majority of the time, and it’s certainly justifiable to give Balogun a yellow card as a warning to be in control of his play. The idea that this warranted a red card, typically reserved for a clearly dangerous or reckless play is simply laughable. The idea that the decision was rendered by VAR made it even worse, because now we had a room of people making the same idiotic decision. Fans had a right to be mad, commentators had a right to criticize, and the USMNT should have had the right to appeal the card, considering it resulted in Balogun being suspended in the quarter-finals.

I read Eliezer Mayenda’s departure post on social media, and I’m not ashamed to admit that it had me feeling a little bit emotional. I knew he was probably going to leave this summer, but I didn’t expect it to hit me like that, reading as he poured out his heart and soul to the Sunderland supporters as he heads back to France to take up a new challenge with Rennes.
Maybe it’s because I didn’t expect that sort of post from him – he doesn’t strike me as a particularly emotional fella, and if anything, he’s made a name for himself at Sunderland for being Mr Cool. Underneath that tough exterior, however, is a big softie who absolutely loved his time on Wearside and has fallen in love with the club and the fans just as hard as we have with him.
When you consider the step he made as such a young man, moving from Sochaux to try and make it in the Championship with us, we’ve seen him grow up right before our eyes. He’s no longer a slight, apprehensive young pup – he is genuinely a big man now.
And unlike a lot of the players we signed back then, who couldn’t manage the transition and didn’t really make their mark, Eliezer Mayenda stepped up to the plate when his chance came – and that was after a failed loan move to Hibernian that could have broken him, when you think about it.
His talent and amazing raw potential gave him the platform to impress, and impress he did. Some of his performances in the Championship in our promotion season were remarkable, and he scored some incredible goals. His solo effort away at Bristol City is probably the greatest piece of individual brilliance that I’ve ever seen from a Sunderland player, and his role in getting us promoted through the playoffs showed us that this is a big character, capable of stepping up to the plate in high-pressure situations.

But his bid for MLB's first perfect game in more than three years was stopped by his own manager.
Perez was lifted after seven flawless innings and eight strikeouts against the Athletics, with Marlins skipper Clayton McCullough removing him after 92 pitches. The seven innings tied a season-high for the electric 23-year-old, who was making just his third start since returning from a thigh injury.
Perez had Tommy John elbow surgery before the start of the 2024 season that kept him out of action for all of that season and half of 2025.
Fans in Sacramento responded to Perez's removal by chanting "shame" and pointing at the Marlins dugout as the eighth inning started.

A week after confirming a big money move to Bayern Munich, Morocco attacking midfielder Ismael Saibari has come down with an apparent hamstring injury in their World Cup Round of 16 tie vs Canada. Just before the first hydration break, the 25-year-old went down clutching his thigh after another one of Canada’s relentless attacks. Physios were called onto the pitch, who proceeded to treat the player for several minutes before he was finally subbed off.
This is, of course, devastating news for Morocco, for whom Saibari was one of their rising stars. As for Bayern Munich, an outcome like this is far from idea. A potential hamstring injury could take several months to heal, which would mean Saibari would miss the critical preseason period to get to know his new team and coach.
In financial terms, FIFA will cover the player’s salary for the duration of his injury. However the impact on Saibari’s start at Bayern Munich will be the one fans are most concerned about. Such a huge shame, as he was making waves in this tournament.

This WNBA season has been a roller coaster, especially when it comes to Indiana Fever point guard Caitlin Clark. Any and all coverage surrounding Clark has become a hot-button issue in the league, whether it be Indiana’s pedestrian play in the first half of the season, Clark’s emotional outbursts during games, or her involvement in testy confrontations with the Phoenix Mercury.
Clark and the Fever will look to have a strong second half of the season, and are likely looking forward to the mental reset that will come with the WNBA All-Star break. However, more controversy around Clark has sparked online, after the sharpshooter was ranked eleventh among guards in the final All-Star player vote, per ESPN’s Alexa Philippou.
Fans on social media, with whom Clark came in second, behind only Paige Bueckers, were outraged with the players’ final tally.
