Virginia Tech is off to a sensational start in the James Franklin era after cruising to a 73-3 victory over VMI. The new Virginia Tech head coach watched his team deliver a dominant performance in its season opener and praised several aspects afterward.
However, one moment during the blowout victory genuinely irritated Franklin. Officials penalized the Hokies for a celebration, and their head coach did not hesitate to express his frustration with the call, leading to plenty of reactions from college football fans.
College football has specific rules governing excessive celebrations, and Virginia Tech found itself on the wrong side of one of them in its opening game.
Officials flagged Virginia Tech running back Marcellous Hawkins Jr. for unsportsmanlike conduct after he scored his third touchdown and immediately made his way toward a large group of cadets.
Hawkins proceeded to high-five several of them, but an official in the end zone determined that the celebration warranted a penalty.

If Washington is going to succeed, Demond Williams needs to have a high usage rate as both a passer and runner. He is at his best when he's on the move, and the Huskies are as well. That's my primary takeaway from Washington's frustrating, but earned, season-opening Apple Cup victory.
On the one hand, Washington's performance for most of the afternoon was frustrating because it looked as lethargic as it had at times in the previous two seasons. On the other hand, if you watched other Week 1 games, there were a handful of victorious teams that looked stuck in the mud. None of which battled their in-state rival.
There's a reason Nick Saban referred to headlines as rat poison. Washington was highly regarded throughout the offseason. It kicked off the season with a shiny No. 17 next to its name and is led by a quarterback who many believe could be a Heisman Trophy finalist. Overall, the consensus is that Washington is the popular pick to be 2027's sleeper team. Those elements added to the discomfort of UW's slow start.
Though it eventually gave up a touchdown in the fourth quarter, Washington's defense was sensational. It shot itself in the foot by picking up unnecessary penalties, but overall it was dominant. Defensive backs Jeron Jones and Alex McLaughlin both logged interceptions while Isaiah Ward forced a fumble, then recovered it. Washington would've had four takeaways, but Rylon Dillard-Allen picked up a questionable targeting penalty after thumping Wazzu quarterback Caden Pinnick.
Speaking of penalties, UW must be better in that area, without question. Washington racked up 130 penalty yards to Wazzu's 50. Washington had 12 fewer penalty yards than Pinnick had passing.

The Wisconsin Badgers are in primetime to start the season, as they're taking on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Lambeau Field on Sunday, with kickoff set for 6:30 p.m. on NBC.
Wisconsin is coming off a 4-8 season, which was their worst season by win percentage since 1990. But this year's Badgers are quite different, as the program added over 30 transfers in the offseason, while making a few organizational changes with the coaching staff and front office.
Wisconsin's offense will be at the forefront of the conversation, as the Badgers are now led by Old Dominion transfer quarterback Colton Joseph, who threw for 2,624 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 10 touchdowns last year as the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year. He also added over 1,000 yards and double-digit scores on the ground as a dual-threat quarterback.
The defense looks improved as well, with freshmen sensations Mason Posa and Cooper Catalano now transitioning to full-time roles as sophomores. Wisconsin made a lot of changes in the secondary, bringing in starters at cornerback and safety. They will be tested up front in the trenches against a strong Notre Dame offense, though.
The Fighting Irish are on a mission after missing the College Football Playoff last season with a 10-2 record. They return a ton of production defensively, while quarterback C.J. Carr is a Heisman candidate in his second year as the full-time starter.

Forget, for a minute, the signing Everton did not make and concentrate on ones they did. Their deadline day ended in shambolic fashion but the last buy they made conjured a spectacular, sensational end to his debut.
The consensus was that they lost the transfer window. Yet when they were losing against Manchester United, two newcomers delivered a draw in glorious fashion.
First to equalise was Tyrique George, proof that, while Everton left some of their business too late in the summer, they got much of it done early. Then it was Ainsley Maitland-Niles, whose arrival was only announced 45 minutes before the deadline.

It was a script that not even the most optimistic Italian fans could have written. Taking a grid penalty that relegated him to the back row of the grid, championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli appeared to be strictly on a damage-limitation run. Instead, the 20-year-old Mercedes prodigy delivered the drive of his life, executing a massive number of overtakes to carve through the entire field and secure a sensational victory at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix.
With the breathtaking win, Antonelli became the first Italian driver to win at Monza since Ludovico Scarfiotti achieved the feat for Ferrari exactly 60 years ago in 1966.
Antonelli's path to the top step of the podium required slicing past 18 different cars on track, systematically hunting down the leaders before a late Virtual Safety Car gave him the tire advantage he needed to pass his teammate, George Russell.
Speaking to the media in the aftermath of the historic victory, the young Italian was visibly overwhelmed by the scale of his achievement. When asked if he ever imagined he could go from 19th to becoming the first Italian to win the race in six decades, Antonelli was almost speechless.
"And yeah, unbelievable. Unbelievable," Antonelli admitted. "I'm so happy, and I could have never imagined to be here today, but you know, we managed to pull it off, and I'm really, really happy."

Manchester United are on course for a big three-point haul away from home, as they lead Everton by a goal-to-nil at Hill ****** inson Stadium.
Deadlocked at the halftime interval in what looked to be a fixture headed to full time without a definitive result for either side, it was the Red Devils who broke the deadlock with a sensational hit by Bryan Mbeumo.
After receiving from Kobbie Mainoo, the Cameroonian darted forward and slalomed his way through the Toffees defence before curling an effort into the bottom corner beyond Jordan Pickford.
With that, Mbeumo finally bagged his first Premier League goal against Everton on his staggering 22nd attempt.
A player who has hardly struggled to find the back of the net against big opponents on his day, Mbeumo will be keen to remain a vital cog in the wheel for Michael Carrick's men as Manchesrer United hope to push for major honours this season.

Chennai: Veteran India speedster Mohammed Shami maybe out of India reckoning for now, but he still refuses to give up. When East Zone play South Zone in the Duleep final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here on Sunday, the 36-year-old will be appearing in his 100th First-Class match, with a prolific record of 382 wickets so far.

East Zone skipper Ishan Kishan was effusive in his praise of the senior bowler on the eve of the **** le clash, stressing that age remains irrelevant when backed by exceptional work ethic and fierce determination.

"For Shami, age is just a number. If he is working hard, it doesn't matter. Having someone like him in our team gives us immense confidence. His approach towards the game, his intensity, and his energy this season have been very different from how I've seen him in the past," Kishan said after a practice session.

Comparing this version of Shami to his sensational 24-wicket run at the 2023 ODI World Cup, Kishan stressed on the pacer's sheer appetite for a national comeback.

"It is 2026 now, three years since that World Cup. It is hard when you are not regularly playing for the Indian team to still summon that same motivation for domestic games...Who better than me can judge hunger right now? I see that hunger and drive in him, he wants to make that comeback and be part of the Indian squad again. You can see it in the way he helps me lead, constantly coming up with strategic options. You can instantly tell when a player is desperate to win you the match," the skipper added.

Kishan also hailed Shami's tireless attitude during East Zone's semifinal victory over Central Zone, where the veteran ran in and picked five wickets in the game.

"He is a legend of the game. Looking at his effort in the semifinal, as a captain, it felt incredible when Shami came up and asked for extra overs to break partnerships. That willingness gives a skipper immense confidence. Plus, he finished with two boundaries in the last game, so he's practically an allrounder nowadays," Kishan quipped.

South Zone captain Tilak Varma acknowledged the massive challenge awaiting his batting unit against Shami's probing spells with the red ball, but they are confident to face him.

"It will be great competition. We are up against a quality bowling attack led by Shami. Facing that calibre of bowling is why you love this sport," Tilak said.

CHENNAI: There are five India 'A' 'Test' matches over the next two months against the Aussies at home and New Zealand away. The Duleep Trophy final here between East and South Zone here starting Sunday is an audition for that and the national selectors, including chairman Ajit Agarkar, will be in Chennai to check the performances of the aspirants.

The BCCI also wanted to add a bit of star quotient to the marquee domestic match with KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal and Mohammed Siraj being asked to join the South sq-uad. While Padikkal and Siraj will play the game, Rahul made himself unavailable. Padikkal is coming on the back of a superb series in Sri Lanka and South captain Tilak Varma confirmed on Saturday after a practice session that the left-hander will bat at No. 3.

"Padikkal will strengthen our batting line-up, especially with the kind of form we have seen from him in the last few games. He has done really well, so it will be a big boost for us," Tilak said.

The final carries massive historic weight for East Zone, who reached the ****** le match after a gap of 14 years. Coincidentally, their last final appearance was also in Chennai, a match they won. This fixture also marks red-ball cricket's return to MA Chidambaram Stadium after two years.

"Yes, after 14 years. I was not part of each and every year, but I am part of East Zone this year, and we are in the finals...We played like an unit and cared for each other," East Zone skipper Ishan Kishan said. There's a lot of hype around 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who struck a crucial 92 in the semifinal against Central Zone.

A man born without arms has had his first taste of life as a racing driver, after taking his newly adapted race car out on a circuit for the first time.
Callum Smith, 23, was spotted by recruiters at Team BRIT earlier this year, but it has taken several months to adapt a race car for him, adding a steering wheel that can be controlled with his feet.
Now the rookie driver has had his first opportunity to take the car out for a spin at Donington race circuit and said the "raw emotion" of the day was "just completely different to how I had it planned out in my head."
"I don't think there's too many words to describe the feelings and the sensations of it all", Smith added.

Jim Cramer questioned the reaction to Rubrik, Inc.'s (NYSE:RBRK) latest earnings report during the September 2 episode of Mad Money, as he said:
What just happened to the stock of Rubrik? That's the data security company, reported a seemingly very strong quarter last week... The stock dropped 13% the next day. Darn thing's been drifting lower ever since. Now, this is kind of crazy, people. Rubrik posted a big revenue beat. Earned 20 cents per share when the ***** ysts were looking for 4 cents. They raised their full-year forecast for revenue. Annual recurring revenue was sensational. Margins, free cash flow good too. Stock got hurt. Now some of that's because Rubrik's billings, some people say, came in a little light. I think it's supposedly because the stock had run up like crazy in the month before the quarter. It just came in maybe too hot. The stock's up 14% for the year.
Rubrik, Inc. (NYSE:RBRK) reported revenue of $427.3 million for the second quarter fiscal year 2027, up 38% year over year and above Wall Street's roughly $396 million estimate. Non-GAAP diluted earnings were $0.20 per share, compared with a non-GAAP loss of $(0.03) per share a year earlier and a $0.04 consensus estimate. Subscription ARR increased 33% to $1.66 billion, while net new subscription ARR rose 35% to approximately $96 million.
Management raised its fiscal 2027 outlook. Revenue is now expected at $1.685 billion to $1.693 billion, subscription ARR at $1.880 billion to $1.885 billion and free cash flow at $323 million to $333 million. Third-quarter revenue guidance of $429 million to $431 million also implies continued strong growth.
Moreover, management said demand is being driven by cyber resilience, platform consolidation and expansion into identity resilience. Customers with at least $100,000 of subscription ARR increased 23% to 3,084, while customers generating more than $1 million grew by more than 57%. Rubrik's newer Agent Cloud product remains early, with more than 15 paying customers and only a minimal ARR contribution included in the fiscal-year outlook.

While most fans expected Manchester United to go all out to sign a left-back on deadline day, INEOS had other ideas.
Despite completing a midfield revamp by signing Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba, the co-owners wanted to add one more name.
Leicester City's Louis Page had caught the Red Devils' eye, and United tried their hardest to complete a sensational late move for the 18-year-old.
However, a move never materialised as the Foxes named him in their starting lineup for the game against Plymouth Argyle, while their financial demands also proved to be a significant obstacle.

Smriti Mandhana's record-breaking 124 and a clinical bowling effort helped India crush Hong Kong by 137 runs in their Women's Asia Cup 2026 clash in Dubai. After posting 193/5, India bowled Hong Kong out for just 56 in 16.2 overs to seal a massive win and book their place in the semi-finals.
Hong Kong won the toss and elected to field, but Mandhana quickly put their decision under pressure. The India opener and Shafali Verma gave their side a strong start, with Verma smashing 28 off 17 ***** before departing.

Wickets began to fall regularly after the opening stand, but Mandhana continued to attack from one end. She reached her half-century in 40 ***** before dramatically increasing the tempo, bringing up her century in just 57 deliveries.

Mandhana finished with a sensational 124 off 64 ***** , hitting 14 fours and seven sixes at a strike rate of 193.75. The innings took her to 18 international centuries, moving her past Meg Lanning's tally of 17 and making her the leading century-maker in women's international cricket.

She also broke Chamari Athapaththu's record for the highest individual score in Women's T20 Asia Cup history, surpassing the Sri Lankan's unbeaten 119.

Mandhana's innings eventually ended in the final over when she was run out after a mix-up with Bharti Fulmali. Her dismissal, however, came after she had already powered India to a formidable 193/5.
Hong Kong's chase never got going as India's spin-heavy attack strangled the batting lineup from the beginning. They slipped to 32/3 and struggled to score freely against India's disciplined bowling.

Deepti Sharma led the attack with 3/9 from three overs, removing key batters Natasha Miles and Yasmin Daswani while keeping the scoring rate under control. Prema Rawat, Nandani Sharma and Shree Charani then continued to chip away at the Hong Kong batting order.

Marina Lamplough offered some resistance with 14, but Shree Charani eventually removed her before the lower order folded quickly. Nandani Sharma claimed two wickets, while Prema Rawat finished with two as India's spinners kept the pressure on.

Hong Kong were eventually bowled out for just 56 in 16.2 overs. Shree Charani completed the victory by stumping Shanzeen Shahzad after a sharp piece of work from Richa Ghosh.

NEW DELHI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is taking a long-term view of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's astonishing rise, with secretary Devajit Saikia revealing that the board is closely monitoring the 15-year-old and wants to ensure his early success translates into a long and distinguished international career.

Sooryavanshi's rapid emergence was among the matters discussed at Thursday's high-level BCCI review meeting in Mumbai, which was attended by Saikia, India Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir, Centre of Excellence (CoE) head VVS Laxman and other senior officials.

The teenager has already gone from being an IPL sensation to becoming India's youngest men's international debutant, and the BCCI is now determined to ensure that his development is handled carefully rather than allowing the weight of expectation to derail his progress.

"We want Vaibhav Sooryavanshi or any player of his stature to continue and serve like Sachin Tendulkar did for the country or other players who in the past became legends," Saikia said.

"So we look at Vaibhav in a very serious manner. He's monitored from every angle and every step he is taking forward in his international career. The BCCI is taking a very close look at his future."
Saikia made it clear that the BCCI's objective is not simply to maximise Sooryavanshi's immediate impact but to build a career that can last for years.

"You see, the BCCI can be proud that we are promoting a player of the age of 15 years who is already making his mark in the international scenario and we are very cautious that every right step he should take forward so that it should not be a one series or one year wonder," he said.

The comparison with Tendulkar was particularly significant. Like Sooryavanshi, Tendulkar was thrust into the international spotlight as a teenager before going on to enjoy one of the longest and most successful careers in the history of the game.

The BCCI secretary stressed that Sooryavanshi's progress would be closely tracked at every stage.

"We want Vaibhav's relevance, or any player of his stature, to continue and serve as Sachin Tendulkar did for the country or other players who in the past became legends," Saikia said.

The teenager's rapid rise has given the board plenty of reason for optimism. He was India's youngest-ever men's international debutant after earning his maiden call-up following a sensational IPL 2026 campaign with Rajasthan Royals.

Sooryavanshi scored 776 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 237.30, including a century and five fifties, while his 72 sixes set an IPL record for a single season. He subsequently won several awards, including the Orange Cap, Most Valuable Player, Emerging Player, Super Striker and Super Sixes honours.

He also made an immediate impact for India against Zimbabwe, scoring 151 runs in three matches as India completed a 3-0 sweep and claimed his maiden Player of th

Liverpool have beaten Real Madrid to a transfer on deadline day in a sensational move.
It has been a slow summer for the Reds in the transfer market.
Ultimately, Richard Hughes secured only three senior signings this summer. Ronald Araujo arrived on loan from Barcelona, Bradley Barcola was signed for close to a club record fee of £123m from Paris Saint Germain and Victor Munoz was brought in from Osasuna.
In isolation the trio are all exciting arrivals who will bolster Liverpool.
It's important to mention Jeremy Jacquet will technically count as a new signing as well given he joined the club this summer after agreeing a move in January.

The Texas Rangers scored eight runs while the Californian Athletics scored five runs.
The Rangers seem to have finally found themselves a punching bag and the veterans were lining up to throw some haymakers.
September started in a similar fashion to how August ended with Texas beating up on the hapless Athletics. The catalyst tonight was the guys you hope can do damage as hitters No. 2-4, Corey Seager, Wyatt Langford, and Brandon Nimmo, combined for eight of Texas' twelve hits, five of their eight runs, and six of the eight RBIs.
Not be left out, No. 5 hitter Ezequiel Duran worked a couple of walks and drove in one of the other runs while also making a sensational play at second base to keep the would-be tying run off the board in the early goings.
The Rangers scored first in the game's opening frame when Nimmo drove in Seager with a two-out double. Meanwhile, Texas starter MacKenzie Gore was able to keep the Gore Inning to a minimum as the A's tied the game at a run apiece in the top of the third before Gore escaped a bases loaded jam to end the threat.

South Africa continued their strong run in the Namibia T20I Tri-Series with another convincing victory over Zimbabwe, securing a comfortable 43-run win in the fourth match at the Namibia Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

Lhuan-dre Pretorius narrowly missed out on a maiden T20I century but produced a career-best 94 to set up South Africa's second victory over Zimbabwe in the tournament. The opener's sensational knock came off just 51 ******* and featured 12 fours and three sixes.

Pretorius was named Player of the Match after helping South Africa post 185/7 before their bowlers completed the job by dismissing Zimbabwe for 142 in 17.4 overs.
Put into bat, South Africa made an aggressive start, with Pretorius anchoring the innings and playing a key role in two partnerships of more than 50 runs for the first two wickets.

He found an able partner in Dewald Brevis, who struck 41 off 27 ******* , as the Proteas built a strong platform. Zimbabwe did manage to fight back with regular wickets towards the latter stages, but South Africa had already done enough damage to reach a competitive 185/7.

Pretorius fell six runs short of a century, but the opener insisted the team victory mattered more than his individual milestone.

"Yeah, that's fine. I'm just glad we got over the line. Milestones will come and go, and yeah, it wasn't meant to be today, but I was just glad because we said at the 14-over mark we wanted to get to 200, and I knew if I got the team to 200 I'd get to the milestone. But yeah, I think milestones come and go, and today was not meant to be, but we won, so it's good," Pretorius said.
Zimbabwe needed 186 for victory but struggled to maintain momentum after a promising beginning from Brian Bennett.

Their powerplay was derailed by a double-wicket maiden from captain Bjorn Fortuin, and South Africa struck again soon after the fielding restrictions ended.

Duan Jansen produced a decisive burst, taking three wickets in four ******* across two overs to leave Zimbabwe in serious trouble.

Captain Sikandar Raza offered some resistance with 45 off 33 ******* , while Newman Nyamhuri added 27 with some aggressive hitting. But the pair could only reduce the eventual margin of defeat as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 142.

Fortuin was the standout bowler, finishing with 4/24 from 3.4 overs, while Jansen claimed 3/21. The pair shared seven wickets between them as South Africa repeatedly struck at crucial moments.

The result gives South Africa their second win over Zimbabwe in the tri-series, with Pretorius' near-century and a disciplined bowling performance combining to secure another comprehensive victory.

Naomi Osaka is popular for her eye-catching outfits at major tennis tournaments, and her latest look impressed NBA royalty, Allen Iverson. She came to the court in braids, wearing a headband and a shooting sleeve, looking like a young Iverson. She even shared high praise for AI in her media session, garnering a response from the legend himself.
Talking to the press about the inspiration behind her outfit and AI's impact on fashion, Osaka said:
"I think he's also someone that I look up to a lot, because he's kind of done a lot in fashion, whether it's on purpose or not, but he's shifted the way that NBA players dress. I also think the whole conversation around clothes in sports and also just expressing yourself through style, I feel like he's someone that I look up to in that regard."
The media person also asked if she'd had an opportunity to talk to Iverson, to which she responded, "zero, right now." However, the 11-time NBA All-Star eventually noticed the tribute and was touched, and thanked the tennis sensation with a post on Instagram:
"Wow, what a[n] honor! BIG FAN can't wait to meet you. naomiosaka"

In a recent post on X, respected journalist Fabrizio Romano offered an update on Manchester City and their pursuit of Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo. It is believed that the Mancunian club are confident about recruiting the Dutch talent once the Reds find a replacement for him in this transfer window.
Gakpo enjoyed a good run of form at the Merseyside club but struggled to be consistent for them in the Premier League. Still, the 27-year-old deserves credit for scoring nine times and picking up six **** ists in 52 matches for Liverpool last season across all fronts.
The Dutch sensation is currently among the most talented wide players in Premier League football. Therefore, it is no surprise that Man City are eager to land him in this transfer window.
His current contract at Anfield will run out in the summer of 2030, so the Mancunian club would do well to get a deal done for him before the end of this month.

GRAND BLANC, MI — Steven Alker crashed the Block party.
Alker made four consecutive birdies on the back nine en route to a final-round 4-under 68 to hold off a big-name leaderboard and run away with The Ally Challenge crown at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club on Sunday, Aug. 30. It was Alker's 13th victory on the 50-and-older PGA Tour Champions tour — including his third this season and his second in as many weeks.
Alker, 55, from New Zealand, took sole possession of the lead with a birdie at the par-4 12th hole, then expanded it with a two-putt birdie at the par-5 13th hole, as Michael Block, the one-time viral sensation, made bogey.
"Perfect number," Alker said of his second-shot, 3-wood approach from 245 yards into the 13th hole, where the momentum really swung to his corner. "Worked out well."
Alker made birdies at Nos. 14 and 15 (the latter on a 60-foot putt), too, as he seized yet another ****** le and bolstered his standing in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup points race, which he's won twice before. Alker won for the second time in Michigan, having won the Senior PGA Championship in 2022 at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor.Alker entered Sunday's final round two shots back of Block, the 50-year-old PGA Tour Champions rookie who was looking for his first win in any PGA Tour-sanctioned tournament.
