Providence will scatter from there before the start of first semester, the last real extended break before its 100th men's basketball season. The Friars have answered a few questions and hope to address a few more before two exhibition games in October and the opener in November.
Dink Pate's eligibility, Leonardo Marangon's arrival from Italy, another possible roster addition and minor injuries that sidelined Ryan Mela and Samson Aletan for Thursday's session at the Ruane Friar Development Center all linger. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi announced himself on the international stage in spectacular fashion during India's first T20I against Zimbabwe on Thursday, becoming the youngest player ever to score a maiden T20I half-century.
The 15-year-old became the youngest player to score a maiden T20I half-century after racing to an 18-ball fifty in Harare. It was a timely response from the teenage batter, who had managed scores of 14, 13 and 15 in his first three appearances for India during the T20I series against England.
Following those outings, Sooryavanshi was left out of the playing XI for the fifth and final T20I. His exclusion came amid intense scrutiny over India's selection decisions. Earlier in the England series, Sanju Samson, who had been India's Player of the Tournament during their T20 World Cup-winning campaign, was dropped from the side, with Sooryavanshi brought into the XI. Former India captain and ex-BCCI selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth admitted he was baffled by the decision to drop Sooryavanshi after only three failures and took aim at head coach Gautam Gambhir over the move.
"He (Sooryavanshi) has an effortless range of shots, yet, not one shot was cross-batted. This boy is really something special. How did Gautam Gambhir foolishly drop him, of all people, after three failures to crush his confidence?" said Srikkanth, speaking on his YouTube channel, as quoted by Sportskeeda.
With Gambhir not accompanying the team on the Zimbabwe tour, former India batter VVS Laxman is serving as the side's interim head coach.

"I salute Vaibhav for his dedication. After the England series, he didn't go home and instead went straight to the Rajasthan Royals camp. He has been working on his batting against the short ball because he wants to prove to the whole world that he is special," Srikkanth added.

Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza has backed teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to emerge as a "generational talent", urging people not to judge the 15-year-old after a difficult start to his international career.

Despite the modest returns, Raza believes the youngster has the ability to become one of the game's brightest stars if his development is managed carefully.
"Vaibhav is a supremely talented cricketer. If a 15-year-old kid is playing international cricket, criticising him after just two or three matches isn't justified," Raza said on JioStar.
"I think Vaibhav has a lot of very good senior cricketers around him. If he is managed and handled well, I think Vaibhav could be a generational talent."

Looking ahead to the series, Raza rejected suggestions that India would start as overwhelming favourites despite Zimbabwe facing the reigning T20 world champions.
"Both countries will have an equal chance in this series. But one thing I am very sure about is that because Zimbabwe has been playing very consistent and very entertaining cricket, I can say this for sure that this series will be very entertaining," Raza told Star Sports.
Zimbabwe head into the contest with confidence after a series of impressive results, including a memorable 23-run victory over Australia at the ICC T20 World Cup in Colombo in February, a result that played a key role in Australia's surprise group-stage exit. They have also registered wins over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh this year.
"As far as winning or losing is concerned, both countries have an equal chance to win the series," said Raza, who has represented Zimbabwe in 136 T20Is.

"To see what he has done over the last year, what he has done for India Under-19, and the fact that he made his international debut at the same age, these are no small feats by any means.
"You don't get to hear such stories nowadays. Vaibhav is special. It will be important how he is managed and handled," he added.
Looking ahead to the series, Raza rejected suggestions that India would start as overwhelming favourites despite Zimbabwe facing the reigning T20 world champions.
"Both countries will have an equal chance in this series. But one thing I am very sure about is that because Zimbabwe has been playing very consistent and very entertaining cricket, I can say this for sure that this series will be very entertaining," Raza told Star Sports.
Zimbabwe head into the contest with confidence after a series of impressive results, including a memorable 23-run victory over Australia at the ICC T20 World Cup in Colombo in February, a result that played a key role in Australia's surprise group-stage exit. They have also registered wins over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh this year.

NEW DELHI: Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has strongly criticised the selectors for leaving Sanju Samson out of India's T20I squad for the upcoming Zimbabwe tour, calling the decision "just unfair". Ashwin also warned that frequent changes in the team could create insecurity among players and hurt India's T20 setup.
Speaking on his YouTube show Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin said he completely disagreed with the decision.
"I mean, what can I even say? It's just unfair. Just unfair. I don't agree with it. But it is what it is. I mean, I don't know. Seriously, it's difficult."
Ashwin questioned the logic behind dropping Samson after a few poor scores and wondered who would be next if the team continued to lose.
"Sanju has been dropped because of losses and form. He has been left out. We've already lost two games. If we lose again, will someone else be dropped too? Who is next? That's wrong. I really hope the Indian team finds itself. Indian cricketers should not be put in an insecure position."

Former India cricketer Saba Karim believes it is too early to see 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as a replacement for Sanju Samson in India's T20I team. He backed Samson's recent performances and said the youngster should be allowed to develop without comparisons.
Sooryavanshi has travelled with the Indian squad for the T20I series against Ireland and England but is yet to make his international debut. India have instead continued to back the top-order trio of Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan, all of whom played important roles in India's 2026 T20 World Cup triumph.
Asked if Sooryavanshi could replace Samson in the playing XI, Karim dismissed the suggestion.
“I don’t think so at this stage. Sanju Samson is a fabulous player. He has been a match-winner. He had a very good IPL season. Before that, he was the Player of the Tournament in the T20 World Cup. What are we looking at? Sanju Samson would be thinking, ‘Why is everyone pointing the gun at me?'” Karim said on Star Sports, as quoted by News18.
Karim also said staying with the Indian team without immediately getting a game could benefit Sooryavanshi.
“Even for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, this is a good learning curve. He also gets to understand that to get into this Indian team XI, you have to earn your call-up. This environment will help him to grow as a player and as a human being. Although he has got such an incredible amount of talent, when you get into such a competitive environment, you need to bide your time,” he added.
Sooryavanshi has been one of the most talked-about young players after IPL 2026, where he scored 776 runs for Rajasthan Royals at a strike rate of 237.30 and was named Player of the Tournament.
India did not hand him a debut during the Ireland series, where they suffered a 2-0 defeat.

MUMBAI: Batting great Sunil Gavaskar has backed teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to make his India debut in the opening T20I against England in Durham on Wednesday, saying the 15-year-old could provide the spark India desperately needs after their disappointing 0-2 series defeat to Ireland.
India's batting unit struggled throughout the Ireland series under new T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, prompting calls for changes ahead of the five-match series against England. Gavaskar believes Sooryavanshi's unpredictability could work in India's favour.
"I'm hoping that Sooryavanshi plays the first game because it will be the start of a new series and he gets the team off to a flying start. It's the best way to recover from the series loss against Ireland," Gavaskar said.
He admitted fitting Sooryavanshi into the playing XI would be a challenge given the performances of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, but argued that England's lack of familiarity with the youngster could be a decisive factor.
"So, if he gets going, he can take the game away and I think that is what India needs at this particular point of time, after this loss, is for somebody to make the impact straight away. So, the host nation England is put on the backfoot straight away," Gavaskar added.
Despite Shreyas Iyer's poor start as India's T20I captain, Gavaskar urged patience, pointing out that adapting to leadership at the international level takes time.
"I think with any new relationship, there will always be just a little time taken for both to understand the support staff and the playing staff to understand what is expected of them," he said.
"Shreyas Iyer's leadership has been proven over the years in the T20 format. We have seen him win trophies, win ****** les and get teams into the knockouts and get teams into the final."
Gavaskar also felt India's batters needed to adapt better to conditions after struggling on seamer-friendly pitches in Belfast.
"In any form of the game and practically in any sport, I think you play the situation," he said, adding that shot selection and decision-making had let India down in Ireland.
Gavaskar also backed Rohit Sharma to silence doubts over his future during the upcoming ODI series against England.
"So, I think England is a very good platform for him to show that even a year-and-a-half down the road, he'll be there opening the batting for India," he said.

"He is a top class bowler and you know, if he's, if I might say, if I might use the word, if he's in the mood, he can cause problems for anybody," he said.

Former England off-spin stalwart Graeme Swann feels that left to him, the destructive Bihar and Rajasthan Royals opener, whom termed as "generational talent," would be making his India debut immediately.
"Well, if I were an Indian captain or coach, I would have him in immediately. I've said this, I'm a huge fan of Vaibhav. He's a generational talent and I'd say get him in ASAP. The way he played in the IPL this year, having started last season and doing incredibly well, again, everyone's heads turning and thinking, who is this kid? I think there was an expectation that his performances would taper, would fall off this season. If anything, he got better and better. And that little mid IPL blip, one or two games where people thought, ‘oh, he's got a weakness if we bowl very full.’ And they got him out with Yorkers a couple of times. He got a couple of low scores. He immediately adapted and then scored at a terrific rate in the next few knocks. I think he is a sort of once in a generation talent, generational talent that comes around. And I think the sooner that India plays him, the sooner they expose him to international cricket. There is no reason why he cannot be the best player in the world for the next 15 years. I think he's that good," Swann said at an interaction on Sunday.
Batting vigorously for Sooryavanshi's inclusion, Swann said that he was doing so while factoring in the logic of "dropping someone who doesn't necessarily deserve to be dropped," purely because "Sooryavanshi has outperformed them all in the IPL."

NEW DELHI: Jai Moondra admitted he was still struggling to believe what had just happened after inspiring Ireland to one of the greatest moments in the country's cricket history, as emotional celebrations broke out following the hosts' stunning 2-0 T20I series sweep over reigning world champions India.
The software engineer from Rajasthan's Tonk, who only made his international debut for Ireland in the series, was named both Player of the Match and Player of the Series after dismantling India's star-studded batting line-up once again. "Just keep it simple, do what you have been doing. It's gonna be tough, little margin for error. So just keep what you have been doing and stick to the plan," he added.
