Taking a grid penalty that relegated him to the back row of the grid, championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli appeared to be strictly on a damage-limitation run. Instead, the 20-year-old Mercedes prodigy delivered the drive of his life, executing a massive number of overtakes to carve through the entire field and secure a sensational victory at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix.
With the breathtaking win, Antonelli became the first Italian driver to win at Monza since Ludovico Scarfiotti achieved the feat for Ferrari exactly 60 years ago in 1966.
Antonelli's path to the top step of the podium required slicing past 18 different cars on track, systematically hunting down the leaders before a late Virtual Safety Car gave him the tire advantage he needed to pass his teammate, George Russell.
Speaking to the media in the aftermath of the historic victory, the young Italian was visibly overwhelmed by the scale of his achievement. When asked if he ever imagined he could go from 19th to becoming the first Italian to win the race in six decades, Antonelli was almost speechless.
