Kansas City Federal Reserve president Jeff Schmid said Friday that he supported the central bank's decision to raise interest rates this week and suggested that more rate hikes could be warranted, a view that was echoed by the rest of the central bank and Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh.
"The Fed has work to do on inflation, and this week's action was a step in that direction," Schmid said in a speech in Vail, Colo.

The Federal Open Market Committee voted on Wednesday in a unanimous decision to raise its benchmark interest rate to the range of 3.75% to 4% from 3.5% to 3.75%, the first rate hike since July 2023
Schmid noted that inflation has run above the central bank's 2% target for over five years, and the most recent price readings suggest a pace trending above 3%. Inflation has jumped this year as oil and overall energy prices have leapt higher amid the conflict with Iran. Even when stripping out energy and food prices, so-called "core" inflation has also been sticky.

Last year Highland survived a late rally by Marion Harding to win in overtime. This season it was the Presidents' turn to win a wild and close one in Week 4 action on Sept. 11.
Marion Harding's Jaden Jordan hauled in an 11-yard touchdown pass from Dez Feliciano with 12 seconds left to give the Prexies a 26-22 victory over the Scots.

Ethan Pecko entered his fifth inning Saturday unscored upon but with a reliever warming behind him in the Houston Astros' bullpen. Three batters later, his outing ended. Tim Tawa cued an infield hit into an open right side. Pecko pounced on a Ryan Waldschmidt tapper before Lars Nootbaar lined a clean single.
Nootbaar occupied the leadoff spot in the Diamondbacks' lineup and was facing Pecko for a third time in the game. His single put the potential tying run on base, brought manager Joe Espada out to remove his starter and reinforced an issue within Houston's rotation with 19 games left in a postseason race.
Two of five starters the Astros are deploying - Cristian Javier and Pecko, the right-handed prospect - are under tighter reins, with Houston hesitant to have them face opposing lineups a third time. Javier hasn't faced more than 19 batters in any of his past four outings, one of which he pitched in bulk relief.

Simo Valakari is "a happy man" after adding midfielders Josh Campbell and Joel Cotterill to his St Johnstone squad this week.
German forward Danny Schmidt has also been recruited and has obtained a work permit in time for Sunday's Scottish Premiership visit of Hibernian (15:00).
However, as Hibs are loan player Campbell's parent club, he will not feature at McDiarmid Park this weekend.
"I'm a happy man," Valakari told Saints TV.
"I was very happy to be able to get those two players. I was very happy with the squad and players we added. Joel and Josh were on our radar at the start of the window. Things don't always happen as fast as you wish but we were not in a rush.

I love to sail. And, yes, I've been known to "rock." I've even meet a few rockstars over the years. (Just please don't tell my 14-year-old son I said so. He already thinks I'm pretty cringe.) I've met a few royals and attended some very cool art exhibitions over the years too.
But I've never been to a modern art exhibition that combines rockstars, yachts and all sorts of royalty quite like the event was held to benefit Nantucket Community Sailing at the oh-so-authentic Thomas Macy Warehouse on the island. And lots of well-connected people who love the ocean, yachts, and art were there to see Kos Evans's expanded Rock and Royals modern art collection. It features one-of-a-kind images of legendary rockstars and all sorts of royalty who sail, on rare, one-of-a-kind sailcloth from yachts owned by the likes of Pete Townshend, the Prince of Monaco, and American royalty such as JFK too.

MOOSIC, PA(WBRE/WYOU)— The RailRiders pulled to within two games of first place with a 9-2 win on Wednesday night over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre put up four runs in the first inning, never trailing in the win over the I-Pigs.
Jasson Dominguez started the scoring in the first with a single to right field, bringing in Jarred Kelenic. The next batter J.C. Escarra continued the hit parade with a single to shallow right. That brought in Anthony Volpe, putting runners on the corners for Marco Luciano. The SWB second baseman drove a ball to the wall to bring in Dominguez. Oswaldo Cabrera ended the merry-go-round with a fielder's choice, and a fourth run for the RailRiders.

The rookie shortstop exited Saturday's second game of a doubleheader after three innings, having twisted awkwardly on a check swing in his first at-bat.
An MRI taken late Saturday showed no structural damage. Lombard wasn't sure if he'd be an available player Sunday.

SCHMID Group N.V. (NASDAQ:SHMD) delivered a sharp revenue recovery in the first half of 2026, but the quality of that growth fell short of management's earlier expectations. The three-time MVP has begun baseball activities and could return to the field within the next few weeks.

As central bankers gather for the 49th annual economic symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyo., starting Thursday evening, Kansas City Fed president Jeff Schmid warned that the rise of innovation in payments from stablecoins to blockchain and instantaneous payments could be disruptive.
"I think we're going to find that not only is this, from an innovation standpoint, very transitional, it's going to be very disruptive too," Schmid said in an interview with Yahoo Finance.
The theme of this year's gathering focuses on financial innovation in payments and the implications for monetary policy.
"I think we need to prepare," Schmid said. "We're going to be talking in the next decade more about sources of liquidity and duration, maybe more than we talked about capital, because at the end of the day, that $5 [trillion] or $10 trillion that we move a day is going to over time become instantaneous, and that's going to be a change in the system at large."

Inflation is "still stubborn and it's still sticky and we've got to continue to find ways to break through" and get it back to 2%, Kansas City Fed President Jeffrey Schmid said on CNBC on the sidelines of the conference.
He noted that the U.S. central bank's current 3.50%-3.75% policy rate did not appear to be restrictive.

SCHMID Group N.V. (NASDAQ:SHMD) reported a sharp increase in first-half revenue for 2026, but lowered its full-year profitability guidance after weaker-than-anticipated margins and a greater contribution from lower-margin business in China.
Revenue reached €46.0 million for the first six months of the year, up substantially from €16.9 million in the corresponding period of 2025. China accounted for more than half of the group's first-half sales.
Gross profit improved to €9.8 million, representing a gross margin of 21.2%. That compared with a gross loss of €1.6 million in the first half of last year.
The operating loss was broadly unchanged at €8.0 million, versus a loss of €7.8 million a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA, which SCHMID reports as a non-IFRS measure, improved considerably to a loss of €0.6 million from a loss of €11.6 million in the first half of 2025.

Directors at four Federal Reserve regional banks voted to increase the primary credit rate in the days before the Fed's July meeting, discount rate minutes released Tuesday showed, providing fresh evidence of how divided the central bank was heading into that decision.
The directors of the Cleveland and Minneapolis Fed banks voted on July 16, 2026, and the directors of the Kansas City and Dallas Fed banks voted on July 23, to set the primary credit rate at 4%, a quarter-percentage-point increase from the existing level of 3.75%. PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have had their share of strife over the past 10 days, dealing with another pitching injury and the fallout of having one of their best players ghost the team during a playoff race.
Rookie Ryan Waldschmidt changed the mood in a hurry on Tuesday night.
The 23-year-old entered the game as a pinch hitter with two outs in the ninth and smashed a two-run, game-winning homer to stun the Chicago Cubs 5-4. It was the team's 40th comeback win of the season, which leads the big leagues.
The D-backs trailed 4-0 after seven innings on Tuesday before scoring three runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth.
"I think they have the mentality that they're just a bunch of dogs and they're not going to stop," manager Torey Lovullo said. "They're going to keep getting after it every single day and that's just ingrained in them. They have a great makeup.

The almost Dback Clay Holmes shut this Dbacks offense down for 7 innings. The Dbacks had a deal in place for Holmes per multiple reports but the deal fell through at the last minute due to medicals. The fact that he was almost a Dback made the first 7 innings of this game sting all that much more, especially given the current status of this rotation.
Brandon Pfaadt was pretty good today pitching into the 7th inning tonight and allowing 4 runs while keeping his team within striking distance. The Cubs have the 2nd best offense in the league and Pfaadt did a decent enough job of keeping them in check. His first 3 innings were pretty easy getting lots of soft contact, however he gave up a 3 run HR in the 4th inning on a hanging curveball to Ian Happ. Most importantly however, like I mentioned earlier, he was able to settle back in after the home run and give his team 6.2 innings against a red hot offense.
The Dbacks offense finally woke up in the 8th inning as they were able to finally get on the board with 3 runs due to some linked up at bats with a couple of walks and a huge double from the red hot Gabi Moreno and a single from Geraldo Perdomo. When this offense has been clicking this season, it seems as though it is starting with the bottom of the order getting on base for the top of the order.
The story of the game however was Ryan Waldsschmidt who for the second time this season hit a walkoff home run off of a contending team's closer. This time it came as a pinch hitter with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th with Jose Fernandez pinch running at first base for Tim Tawa. The Dbacks were inches away from losing this game as Jose Fernandez was narrowly able to steal 2nd base and get into scoring position down 4-3. Then Waldschmidt got a hanging slider and did not miss it! What an electric moment and perhaps the biggest swing of the season thus far considering that the Dbacks were able to gain a game on both the Padres and the Phillies tonight on 1 single swing. What a great moment for this team!

On Monday, lefty Max Fried (elbow bone bruise) tossed four simulated innings (60-pitches) vs. live hitters, putting him in line for activation Saturday, when the Yanks host the Red Sox in a day-night doubleheader.

Well, in the broader scheme of things, that probably went about as well as could be expected. It was a Merrill Kelly start, after all. He hasn't picked up a W in more than a month, his last win coming back on July 22. As mentioned in the GDT tonight, August has been a cruel month for Kelly. Tonight, to be fair, wasn't so bad. He came within one out of a quality start, something we haven't seen from Merrill in eight attempts now, since before the All-Star break. While the Arizona bullpen certainly didn't help matters, this one was more on the offense. Here's some insightful baseball ******* ysis for you. You won't win many games when you fail to score any runs. You're welcome!
After a quick first inning on both sides, it look like Merrill Kelly's night was set up to be a short one. A one-out walk was followed by a two-out triple, as Corbin Carroll couldn't corral the ball in the right field corner. Kelly then lost control of his change-up entirely, walking the Cubs #8 and #9 hitters, to load the bases in front of presumptive 2026 NL MVP, Pete Crow-Armstrong. Cue thoughts of, "It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for 'em". Fortunately, it did, though only just, as PCA sent it 388 feet to die in the center field glove of Ryan Waldschmidt. An elevated pitch count for Merrill and a 1-0 deficit were by no means a disaster.
Indeed, Kelly settled down surprisingly well after that, rediscovering the feel for his off-speed pitches. He set down the Cubs in order in the third with a pair of strikeouts, then had another 1-2-3 frame in the 4th, including another K. He did allow another run in the 5th on a pair of doubles, as the Cubs took a 2-0 lead, but it was a solid enough outing. The most interesting thing though, was likely a spat between Kelly and the third-base coach for the Cubs, Quintin Berry. At one point, he stepped off the mound, stared pointedly at Berry, and then the occupants of the D-backs and Cubs dugouts started jawing at each other. The exact specifics of the discussion will have to await the Jomboy breakdown.
However, the broadcast team speculated that Berry's positioning might have allowed him to look into Merrill's glove and relay information to the batter, if there was a runner on second. It was notable that, after Kelly was lifted from the game, he remained in the dugout, unusual behavior for a starting pitcher. I've talked before about the idea of a "stopper" as a pitcher in a starting rotation who can halt a losing streak by at least giving their team a chance to win. In my mind, it's a separate idea from a starting pitching ace who might be expected to have a wholly different level of pitching production. If there was ever a team in desperate need of a "stopper" performance, it would be the Diamondbacks at this point in the season. Even after a series win in Atlanta over the weekend, they have come into Boston and gotten knocked around on both sides of the ball by allowing a combined 20 runs in the first two games and scoring just five in response. We've seen over the past two years how important each win can be – especially in a National League Wild Card that is incredibly tight and also has seen the D-Backs drop back in – so avoiding a sweep was absolutely necessary. And that's to say nothing of the cloud of uncertainty hanging over Ketel Marte's status for the remainder of the season. This afternoon certainly wasn't pretty, but the team did manage to accomplish the mission.
While Brandon Pfaadt may not necessarily pop off the page as a "stopper," he has been one of the reasons for the team's surge over the past month or so. He's pitched to an absurd 1.22 ERA (2.56 FIP) over his last seven starts going back to July 10th – which coincides nearly exactly with the last time the team was .500 or worse. One of the keys to that success: Pfaadt hadn't allowed a home run since his first start back from Reno, a stretch of 49.1 IP. So naturally, he allowed three home runs on the day – a pair of solo shots and a three-run shot that ended his start. The first of those solo shots from Nick Sogard in fact came on the very first pitch of the game – a 93 MPH center-center fastball that Sogard launched for his very first career homer. He nearly repeated the feat when Jarren Duran launched the first pitch he saw of the third inning into the stands, but this one was an elevated fastball instead of center cut. And finally, Pfaadt was victimized by the seemingly unstoppable Mickey Gaspar who homered for the third straight game, although this roundtripper was a three-run instead of a solo shot that tied the game and ended Pfaadt's night.
Even as Pfaadt was being pecked to death by solo home runs, the Arizona offense looked pretty ineffectual the first time through the lineup with three hits and a walk. Their best scoring opportunity in the third was snuffed out when Jose Fernandez elected to try and score on a slow bouncer to third base and was easily tagged out. Thankfully, they rebounded to rally in the fifth and sixth innings to take the lead. In the former, they had consecutive doubles from Fernandez and Ryan Waldschmidt as well as a huge two-run double from Gabriel Moreno that bounced off the Green Monster and plated both Waldschmidt and Corbin Carroll. The Dbacks fell once again for the second consecutive night in Boston 9-4. To make things worse, the Phillies and the Padres won so now the Dbacks are 2 games outside of the third wild card spot. They are losers of 3 in a row and are 4-6 over their last 10 games.
Despite everything happening off the field with this team and Ketel Marte, it was actually the pitching that let this team down for the second consecutive night. The Marte news is no doubt a distraction im sure for this team, however having Ketel Marte on the field isn't going to change the fact that this pitching staff has given up 20 runs the past 2 games. You aren't going to win very many games giving up that many runs no matter who you are running up there to bat.
Merrill Kelly continued his skid as his stuff has really regressed late into the season. Kelly allowed 6 ER in just 4 innings tonight including 4 walks. What has become especially alarming about Kelly is just how few of his pitches he is throwing in the zone. This was first brought to my attention weeks ago by Snakes Territory's own Jesse Freidman, and tonight he noted that Kelly only threw 38.4% of his pitches in the strike zone. Last year, Kelly's in zone rate was 47.8%. And it wasn't just tonight for Kelly as he has had a sub 40% in zone rate for several of his last starts. Whatever is going on with him isn't going to be a simple fix im afraid. He really has some issues he needs to iron out physically, mechanically, or perhaps both.
The offense was rather quiet again with the exception of a Gabi Moreno grand slam in the top of the 3rd inning. It was just like you drew it up too as with 2 outs Waldschmidt and Vargas each singled, and Carroll was hit by a pitch brining up exactly who you wanted at the plate in this situation, the teams hottest hitter Gabi Moreno. Moreno then proceeded to get ahead in the count 2-0 and then absolutely unloads on a mistake pitch 428 feet over the green monster for a grand slam. Like I said, just like you drew it up. Team baseball passing the baton to the heart of the lineup.
Unfortunately Merrill Kelly would hand the 4-3 lead immediately back to the Red Sox just 4 batters later. Terrible timing for a team desperate to get some momentum. Then the Dbacks offense would proceed to do almost nothing for the rest of the game outside of a Perdomo double in the 6th and a couple of singles gathered around.
