NEW YORK - There was some encouraging Yankees pitching news before Tuesday night's three-game series opener against the Houston Astros.
On Monday, lefty Max Fried (elbow bone bruise) tossed four simulated innings (60-pitches) vs. live hitters, putting him in line for activation Saturday, when the Yanks host the Red Sox in a day-night doubleheader.
And earlier Tuesday afternoon, Clarke Schmidt tossed a 20-pitch live BP session at Yankee Stadium, putting him on track to begin a minor league rehab ****** ignment by this weekend.
Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake thought Schmidt (Tommy John surgery rehab, forearm cramp) looked sharp, with some good curveballs and a live fastball.
"The competition was a little weak,'' Blake said with a smile, noting that two Yankees coaches, including Brad Ausmus, were in the batter's box. "But overall the stuff looked sharp.''
