In spite of the fact that he currently plays for a team that many fans around the National Hockey League like to room against, there was a huge outpouring of love and support for Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi earlier this summer when reports emerged indicating that Domi was struggling to walk following back surgery. It was a sign of just how much respect the Domi name carries around the sport of hockey and how much respect Max himself has earned as a fierce competitor who has overcome a significant health challenge in diabetes and manages to play at the highest level of hockey.
On Sunday, we got a terrific sign that Domi may in fact be on the mend when he published an update to his Instagram account that makes it clear he is about to embark on the next chapter of his life. Although the caption simply reads "I love you so much" there's no question what the message represents given the image that accompanied it.
In the picture Domi's longtime girlfriend Estelle can be seen showing off a ring on her finger, and I'm sure you can figure out the rest.
As it turns out the proposal came on Estelle's birthday with Estelle making the announcement herself on her own Instagram page.
Domi can even be seen standing in one of the photos shared by Estelle, which is a great sign given the scary news that came out earlier this summer.

Today, August 30, Lisbon Lion Bobby Lennox is celebrating his 83rd birthday.
The Celtic legend scored 277 goals in 589 games for Celtic, and up until recently he was the club's most decorated player with 25 major honours. He has only recently been surpassed by Callum McGregor (26) and James Forrest (28).
Bobby's impressive roll of honour reads as 11 League ***** les, eight Scottish Cups, five League Cups and, of course, the European Cup when he was part of the legendary Celtic side which defeated Inter Milan in Lisbon's Estadio Nacional on May 25, 1967 to become the Kings of Europe.

Was Jonathan Haidt right all along? Readers of this newsletter—and writers at Reason—are surely divided on this one. On Wednesday of this week, news broke that Meta had reached a humongous $17.1 billion settlement with 47 states and the District of Columbia, forced to pay damages due to child-endangerment claims stemming from its social media algorithms and platforms.
"The owner of Facebook and Instagram agreed to the financial penalties for violating federal child privacy and states' consumer protection laws, the states announced," reports The New York Times. "Meta also agreed to limit how long teenagers can spend on its platforms and to bans on features that stoke mental health issues, striking at the heart of the company's business of engagement for advertising."
"The settlement effectively ends a bellwether federal trial in the U.S. Northern District of California in Oakland, where California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey were seeking roughly $200 billion over accusations that Meta harmed children," adds the Times. Meta, the owner of Instagram and Facebook, at times invoked a Section 230 defense, the "First Amendment of the internet" that makes it so companies don't bear liability for the posts of their users—which Reason has repeatedly defended amid a media landscape that doesn't seem to understand the value of Section 230.
"After years of being barred from suing social platforms, state prosecutors have gotten creative," wrote Reason's Elizabeth Nolan Brown earlier this month about the California/Colorado/Kentucky/New Jersey suit. "They're now claiming that this isn't about user-generated speech but about tech companies' product design. In this case, the states claim that providing photo filters is contributing to teens' body dysmorphia and that 'psychologically manipulative' features like displaying post 'like' counts, sending notifications, and using algorithms to curate content around a user's particular interests are what's keeping kids hooked, not the actual content on Facebook and Instagram. It's a silly claim, since clearly there could be no 'addiction' to social media if not for the content or communications contained on these platforms."
"The attorneys general and plaintiffs say that Meta's algorithms trap its users in the infinite scroll, hours of time spent staring at half-naked influencers or malnourished celebrities, images that breed body dysmorphia, anxiety and depression," reads a different Times article. This case was very explicitly built off of arguments and research found in Jonathan Haidt's book The Anxious Generation, which has enjoyed mainstream appeal. "Mr. Haidt met with some of the attorneys general on Zoom, briefing them on his research," the Times continues.

A mother of three swiftly took it upon herself to help teens who hydroplaned during a rainstorm in Rhode Island and were then struck by a car. Now one of music's biggest names is ready to help her.
According to recent donations sent to a GoFundMe page supporting Ashley Taunton, Taylor Swift seemingly contributed $50,000 to the 42-year-old certified nursing ***** istant from Connecticut, who was severely injured while driving on I-95 South in Rhode Island on July 18. While she helped a group of teens on the side of the road, another vehicle hydroplaned and hurtled directly toward them.
"Wishing you the best recovery possible and sending love to your family!" reads a comment left by Swift on Aug. 28.
"In a split-second act of pure bravery, Ashley pushed the other person out of harm's way, taking the brunt of the impact herself," the GoFundMe description reads. "Because of her selfless courage, Ashley is now facing a very long and difficult road to recovery. She has already undergone two major surgeries in the last 18 hours alone, with more scheduled in the days ahead."
The fundraiser is going toward medical expenses not covered by insurance, daily household bills and expenses, gas and travel costs for commuting back and forth to the hospital and groceries for Taunton's three children.

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Tarik Skubal looked comfortable sitting in the first-base dugout in the stadium he called home for his first seven MLB seasons – minus a few inconveniences that come from playing for the visiting team.
"I've never been on this side of the clubhouse. So when I first got here, I'm like, 'which way is the field?'" he said. "It's much farther down there. There's a lot more steps going on, but I guess it's good for your health."
The setting was familiar, but the threads were not. Skubal wore his usual headband and sleeveless hoodie, but both were dipped in Dodger blue instead of stamped with the Olde English D. The night before, he pitched six brilliant innings in the Dodgers' 2-1 win over the Detroit Tigers, returning to Comerica Park less than a month after the Tigers traded him to Los Angeles at the deadline for three prospects.
Skubal didn't have a say in where he went. But based on his interaction with the media before Detroit's game with the Dodgers on Saturday, Aug. 29, he looks to have landed in a situation he really likes.
"[The Dodgers] have won the last two World Series for a reason. It's not a mistake," he said. "You watch [first baseman Freddie Freeman's] ground ball routine, he does the same thing every single day. The Washington Commanders attacked the middle linebacker position in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, selecting Ohio State's Sonny Styles with the seventh overall pick. The Commanders' first round pick stated that he has modeled his game after a former UCLA Bruin linebacker.
That former Bruin is none other than Carson Schwesinger, who just took home the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year award in 2025. Schwesinger made an immediate impact on a good Cleveland Browns' defense, which is exactly what Styles is looking to do this season with the Commanders.
Schwesinger was one of several linebackers that Styles shouted out during an interview with Kevin Clark earlier this month.
"With our DC coming from Minnesota, we've seen Blake (Cashman). You know, he's a great player. I think the way he moves around in zone, it's very fluid. He reads the quarterback really well. Underrated in the run game, I think he has a really good feel for, like, where the ball is going. Then you watch guys like Quay Walker, super physical, big guy. Devin Lloyd, super physical. Carson (Schwesinger) from the Browns, he's a high motor, like, super physical, always around the ball."
Styles led the Buckeyes with seven total tackles in Ohio State's 48-10 win over UCLA last season. The Buckeyes shut out the UCLA offense in the first half before backup quarterback Luke Duncan mustered 10 points after halftime.

Week 0 has arrived, meaning Tennessee hits the field in just one week. The Volunteers will kickoff the Faizon Brandon era against Furman in a tune up game before things start to get real in two weeks down in Atlanta. Tennessee is a sleeper team according to most, taking a backseat to teams like Georgia, Texas, Texas A&M, Alabama, LSU and Ole Miss.
Can the Volunteers force their way into the SEC picture and perhaps make a run at the College Football Playoff? If that's in the cards, they'll have to find answers to these four questions.
The 5-star freshman ran away with the job in fall camp, now it's time to see just how good he can be right off the bat. There's no doubt about his long-term upside under Josh Heupel, but what about the right now? Brandon was praised for making plays down the field in scrimmages, and his athleticism will bring a new element to the RPO and maybe even option game.
It's going to come down to the little things though. The right checks, the right reads, getting through those reads quickly enough and keeping the offensive tempo when Heupel wants to operate with pace. Brandon is sure to make some freshman mistakes, that just comes with the territory. Can he make enough big plays down the field to keep defenses honest and the focus off of DeSean Bishop and the ground game? That's the key to me.
Tennessee's defensive line room has completely transformed in the past couple of seasons after having a bunch of veterans exit the program. It's going to be a new look for Garner's group in 2026, with no more Eason, Moi, Bailey or Josephs to lean on. The torch is being passed to guys like Xavier Gilliam, Nathan Robinson, Tyree Weathersby, Isaiah Campbell, Ethan Utley and several more. Veteran Daevin Hobbs is expected to lead the group and needs to take a big jump.

Over the last year, Nick Maggiulli has come to what he calls an unsettling realization: The upper-middle class is caught in a trap, and many of them don't even realize it.
The chief operating officer of Ritholtz Wealth Management has spent the better part of a year building the case in pieces on his blog, Of Dollars and Data—first arguing private school isn't worth the cost despite its price tag, then that premium travel experiences have grown crowded while remaining expensive in "The Death of the Amex Lounge." He previously talked to Fortune about his book, The Wealth Ladder, and his growing belief "something weird's going on" with the upper-middle class in the U.S. economy.
In an April essay, he pulled the threads together and gave the phenomenon a name: the "upper-middle-class trap," in which people earning roughly $200,000 to $400,000 a year are working more and relaxing less to buy products and services of declining quality.
His evidence includes new single-family homes shrinking in average size by 12% between 2014 and 2024, even as the price per square foot surged 74%, according to LendingTree data. A home near a public elementary school with a top GreatSchools rating costs 78.6% more than a comparable home in the surrounding county. Homebuyers who win bidding wars end up worse off: One study found their purchases produced 6.9% lower annualized returns than homes bought without competition. In higher education, the number of college applicants has jumped 78% since 2015 even as acceptance rates at elite schools have collapsed, driving tuition and private-school costs up roughly twice as fast as overall inflation.
The mechanism Maggiulli describes is a "financial arms race": Every individual decision is rational, but collectively the competition for the same scarce positional goods lowers everyone's quality of life while draining their bank accounts.

On-road diesel prices hit the high $5.60s this week, and the culprit is not crude oil — which has been hovering in the $80s — but a refining capacity crunch that has sent crack spreads above $100 per barrel, well beyond their typical $15–$25 range, said Aaron Decker, partner and chief executive officer of Multi-Service Fuel Card.
"It's not necessarily a crude issue or a crude crisis," Decker said. "We're not in a crude crisis, we're in a refining crisis." Ultra-low distillate inventories have fallen to levels not seen since the early 2000s, and even the late 1990s, he added — a signal he called "really troubling."
Several forces are compounding the supply squeeze. Ukrainian drone strikes have taken out Russian refineries that were previously helping backfill global shortfalls. U.S. Gulf Coast diesel exports are running elevated as domestic refiners supply shortage-stricken markets overseas, which simultaneously tightens American supply and consumes domestic refining capacity. Decker said a weekly government report tracking Hormuz tanker traffic, Russian refinery runs, and U.S. distillate inventories are the three indicators he watches most closely.

The closures come as restaurant chains across the country continue to deal with severe challenges stemming from rising food and labor costs, shifting consumer habits, and aggressive competition for diners.
Full-service restaurants are feeling more pressure as they rely heavily on front-of-house staffing, table service, and bar staff. Moreover, full-service restaurants earn 3%-5% net, versus 6%-9% for fast-casual concepts and quick-service restaurants, on a scale where net margin above 6% is considered strong, according to data from Bloom Intelligence.
Founded in 1997 in Hickory, North Carolina, Hickory Tavern is a sports bar and grill family restaurant chain popular for its saucy wings, flatbreads, loaded nachos, and mozzarella sticks. Aside from food, the bar was often seen as a popular neighborhood gathering place.

The payoff arrived Tuesday: the Freedom 250 Grand Prix averaged 3,282,000 viewers, peaking at 3,482,000 between 2:30 and 2:45 p.m. ET. That is the largest audience any NTT INDYCAR SERIES race has pulled outside the Indianapolis 500 since Champ Car and the IRL finally stopped bleeding each other out in 2008.
Congratulations are in order. So is a second look at the arithmetic.
Four days before the green flag, IndyCar published its season-to-date figure through 14 races: 1,731,000 viewers per race, up 16 percent on 2025 and 53 percent on NBC's final season in 2024. After Washington, the same metric through 15 races reads 1,875,000 — up 32 percent and 70 percent respectively.
Read that again. A single Sunday doubled the series' reported year-over-year growth rate. That isn't a rising tide. That's one wave hitting a shallow denominator.

Not every rookie on this list is fighting to avoid being released. For several, the stakes involve readiness and role rather than job security.
Payton has shown the ability to create with his legs, but Philadelphia needs continued progress in the passing game. Recognizing pressure, getting through reads and protecting the football are priorities. A clean finish would help the Eagles feel more comfortable about his development behind the veteran quarterbacks.
Stowers' second-round status makes his roster position secure. His immediate role is less certain, particularly while he manages a hamstring injury. If cleared, he needs to demonstrate **** ignment reliability and progress as a blocker. If unavailable, the focus shifts to preparing him for a useful role during the season rather than forcing a preseason appearance.
Bell has made a favorable impression, but thumb and leg issues interrupted his final week of camp. His priority is becoming available, not rescuing a roster spot. A healthy Bell gives Philadelphia a young tackle to develop behind its established starters. Any finale snaps should serve that development rather than become a test of how much discomfort he can tolerate.

Over 11,000 people participated in the City of Austin's adult year-round sports leagues in 2024, with growth among seniors and transplants expected in 2025 and 2026. On Friday, players and team leaders in the program were notified the city is canceling its indoor leagues, including basketball and volleyball, to save $400,000.
"The approved reduction removes two recreational programming positions and **** ociated funding related to adult indoor sports operations, totaling an estimated savings of $400,000," reads a statement from the city's department. "It is one of the reductions made within Austin Parks and Recreation, and similar savings measures were approved across other General Fund departments."
According to a City of Austin Parks and Recreation presentation, the department had 1,113 team sign-ups in 2024 across all adult sports, including outdoor leagues like softball and flag football. With registration costs at $350 per team, the department generated approximately $389,550 in revenue. The city's basketball leagues have all been canceled, with refunds to teams to follow.
The department states that the changes are part of the city's ongoing budget constraints and that it is actively evaluating how adult sports opportunities can continue within department‑operated **** es. Notably, this would likely involve removing the city as operators of Austin's adult indoor sports leagues and relying on community or private organizations to preserve play.
"If these leagues go away, there's not another place that we can move and replicate what we've had for generations," said Austin resident and adult sports league participant Pete Signor to KVUE. "Most other leagues are significantly more expensive, like triple the cost, and many of them are not as skilled or more social in nature."

Happy Thursday. Stocks were mixed as investors weighed earnings reports from Nvidia (NVDA), Salesforce (CRM) and CrowdStrike (CRWD) ahead of the Fed's meeting in Jackson Hole.
Nvidia rose 7% in premarket trading after the AI chipmaker reported better-than-expected fiscal second-quarter results and issued revenue guidance that topped Wall Street estimates.
Salesforce jumped 11.2%, while CrowdStrike gained 9%.
"Nvidia once again delivered stronger-than-expected results, providing some reassurance that the AI investment cycle remains intact," said Daniela Hathorn, senior market ***** yst at Capital.com.

Charles Barkley believes DiJonai Carrington made a bad situation significantly worse after her controversial collision with Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. Carrington was ejected from the Chicago Sky's Aug. 8 game against Indiana after striking Cunningham in the head while contesting a shot late in the first quarter. Cunningham was airborne when the contact occurred and fell hard to the court.
Officials initially called a common foul before upgrading it to a Flagrant 2 following a replay review. The ruling resulted in Carrington's immediate ejection. Carrington then posted "WHITE PRIVILEGE" on Threads and tagged the Fever, adding another layer to an incident already generating plenty of debate.
Barkley addressed both the foul and the social media post during an appearance on Michael Smerconish's radio show. The Basketball Hall of Famer did not leave much room for interpretation.
"It was a dirty play. Period," Barkley said.

The 0.70% APY Boost between them is a promotion on a six-month clock, and nothing on the header screen says so.

Amcor is supplying Tiptree, the preserves and spreads business owned by Wilkin & Sons, with packaging films containing certified 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic for use in shrink film and pallet stretch wrap.
The change covers Amcor's collation shrink film and Bontite Sustane stretch wrap, each made with 30% PCR content.
Tiptree is making the switch before revisions to the UK Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) take effect in April 2027.
Under those rules, post-industrial recycled (PIR) material will no longer qualify towards the 30% minimum recycled plastic requirement, with only PCR content set to count.
According to Amcor, the films are intended to preserve packaging, supporting efficiency, load stability and wider cost considerations.

Ricky Schroder got slammed online following his transphobic and anti-vaccine laced tribute to Dolly Parton.
Remembrance after remembrance flooded the internet Tuesday after news that the country music legend had died. Schroder – who played Parton's father in two TV movies, "Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors" and "Dolly Parton's Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love" – joined his voice to the many. But he still couldn't help but point out their political differences in his tribute.
"I didnt [sic] agree with her advocating for Transgender & Covid Vaccine support…but Loved her anyway," Schroder wrote on Instagram alongside a picture of him and Parton. "Thank you for choosing me Dolly to be your Movie Daddy."
This led to a number of celebrities calling the "NYPD Blue" star out for feeling the need to mention those things while honoring Parton. Katie Couric, Boy George, and many others heaped on their disgust for the way Schroder chose to honor Parton's memory.

The Federal Reserve will hold its annual symposium beginning Thursday, with Chairman Kevin Warsh expected to deliver a speech on Friday.
"Warsh is scheduled to deliver keynote remarks on Friday, and markets will be looking for greater clarity on both his ******* sment of inflation and the broader 'regime change' he has advocated at the Fed," said Daniela Hathorn, senior market ******* yst at Capital.com.
