Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is the latest global official to express distrust in FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
Carney spoke on Wednesday, August 5 in Toronto during a press conference about affordable housing and was asked about his thoughts on Infantino, who days earlier scrapped a controversial proposal to sell a minority stake in FIFA to private investors. Carney spent time with Infantino this summer, as Canada was a co-host of the World Cup with the United States and Mexico.
"I've run a few organizations in my time. The idea that proper governance is not to disclose to your closest advisors your chief operating officer, your fellow board members something of consequence that you're even considering let alone proposing, that's fatal, should be fatal," he said.
He continued by noting that FIFA has "their own procedures for making those determinations, but certainly I don't have confidence in Mr. Infantino after this point given what transpired and given the nature of what transpired."
Carney pointed to Carlos Cordeiro, a top advisor to Infantino, not being consulted on the deal and resigning after controversy ensued as evidence that the way Infantino is leading FIFA is problematic.

Emily Willis's mother, Yesenia Cooper, has shared an update on the current progress of her daughter's recovery.
As you'll recall, previous reports dating back to early 2024 revealed that Willis, a former adult film star, had been found unresponsive in her room at a rehab center in Malibu where she had been receiving treatment for ketamine addiction. Legal action followed, with the AVN Award winner's family recently reaching a $3 million settlement with the facility.
Now, per a report from TMZ citing Cooper, Willis's health is showing noteworthy improvements, though she is still unable to communicate verbally. Instead, she's said to be communicating with head and eye movements, with her mother cited in the Thursday (July 30) report as estimating that her daughter can presently understand roughly 80 percent of what's happening.
Willis, who's working with therapists in Mexico at the moment, is said to be in the process of relearning to walk after enduring numerous surgeries. Additional procedures, possibly in Spain, are also said to potentially be on the horizon. For now, Willis is still not able to eat without **** istance, but she has continued to show improvements more generally, including sleeping on her own and watching TV.

Peru has temporarily suspended the operations of sightseeing airline Aerodiana after one of its planes crashed in the country's Ica region on Saturday, killing 11 European tourists and two crew members.
Aerodiana, which flies customers over the Nazca Lines archaeological site in southern Peru, must suspend all operations "until investigations are completed to verify the company's compliance with the applicable aviation regulations, procedures and operating requirements," Peru's Ministry of Transportation and Communications said Sunday.
CNN has reached out to Aerodiana for comment.
The Peruvian government earlier said that the crew of the small sightseeing plane had reported a mechanical problem before radio contact was lost.

New statewide heat safety requirements for University Interscholastic League (UIL) member schools have officially taken effect, marking one of the most significant changes to outdoor athletic and marching band safety standards in recent years.
Beginning Saturday, August 1, all UIL member schools must use Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) measurements—not just the traditional heat index—to determine whether outdoor practices can safely continue. The new standards apply to athletics and marching band activities and are designed to better account for the combined effects of temperature, humidity, wind, and solar radiation.
The new requirements, approved earlier this year by the UIL Legislative Council, became mandatory for the 2026–27 school year on Aug. 1. According to the official UIL Rule Changes, schools must now follow required heat safety procedures instead of previous recommendations.

Vozinha, the goalkeeper who played a key role in Cape Verde's fairytale World Cup run, has delayed his arrival in Chile to sign for Colo Colo because of "personal matters," the club's sporting director said on Thursday.
Colo Colo president Anibal Mosa had announced the signing of the 40-year-old keeper last Friday, later saying he would arrive in Chile on Thursday.
The delay fueled speculation in the local press, with some reporting that Vozinha was also in talks with Moroccan club RS Berkane.
"An additional period has been requested to resolve some personal matters ... and we'll surely have news soon regarding his travel schedule," Jaime Pizarro, Colo Colo's sporting director, told reporters.

Boston Scientific posted second-quarter net sales of $5.44 billion and adjusted earnings of $0.86 per share on Wednesday, beating its own guidance, but the company trimmed its full-year profit outlook as demand for its Watchman heart implant fell short of expectations.
The company now expects full-year 2026 adjusted earnings per share of $3.28 to $3.32, the company said. That compares to a prior forecast of $3.34 to $3.41 per share. ***** ysts had expected full-year adjusted profit of $3.36 per share, according to Reuters.
Boston Scientific also cut its full-year organic sales growth outlook to a range of 5% to 6%, down from a prior range of 6.5% to 8%, the company said.
The Watchman is a device implanted in the heart to block blood clots that can cause strokes in patients who have atrial fibrillation. The drag on that business stems from changing clinical practice — doctors are more often pairing the Watchman with other heart procedures in one visit, which has eaten into the volume of dedicated Watchman-only cases, according to Reuters. Boston Scientific indicated that Watchman revenue is on track to be roughly unchanged in the second quarter and probably the third as well, even as combined-procedure volumes keep climbing.
The quarterly results themselves topped expectations. Second-quarter adjusted EPS of $0.86 came in above the company's guidance range of $0.82 to $0.84. July 29 (Reuters) - Medical device maker Boston Scientific on Wednesday lowered its annual profit forecast, citing pressure on its Watchman heart ‌device business.
The company, in May, warned of pressure on its ‌Watchman heart device, a small implant used to help prevent stroke-causing blood clots in patients with atrial fibrillation, due to softer-than-expected uptake.
Boston Scientific said growth was being weighed down by a decline in standalone Watchman procedures as physicians increasingly combine the implant with other cardiac treatments during a single visit.
As a result, ‌the company said it expects ⁠flat Watchman revenue growth in the second and likely third quarter, despite continued uptake in combined procedures.
On Monday, Boston ⁠Scientific's board approved a new company-wide restructuring plan aimed at cutting costs and better positioning the company for future growth.

CHICAGO − Ohio State football coach Ryan Day said the handful of players who were held out at the end of spring practice in April have been participants in summer workouts and are due to return for the start of training camp in August.
Austin Siereveld and Phillip Daniels, the Buckeyes' returning starting left and right tackles, and Earl Little Jr., a transfer safety from Florida State, were among those who underwent procedures late in spring practice.
Day did not divulge the details of the injuries to Siereveld and Daniels during the spring, but then described their procedures as small ones. He said Little had a cleanup procedure on a knee that led him to miss the spring game.
"It's good to get all those guys back and have a full summer with them, which has been great," Day said during Big Ten media days on July 29. Approximately 2.6 million Americans discontinued ACA marketplace coverage this year after increased pandemic-era subsidies ended at the end of 2025, with health policy experts predicting that total enrollment would decrease to between 16.5 million and 17.5 million by year-end. Meanwhile, the Urban Institute has projected that 4.8 million more people will be uninsured in 2026 as a direct consequence of the lapsed subsidies, with certain HealthCare.gov-reliant states witnessing enrollment losses of 20% or more.
Whether this translates into fewer elective medical treatments is now a hotly debated topic in the healthcare industry, with Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) emerging as the evident casualty. The company's shares plunged more than 12% before the bell on July 17, despite Intuitive maintaining its global procedure-growth prediction for its da Vinci surgical robots. A federal appellate panel on Tuesday refused to block President Donald Trump's executive order seeking to restrict mail voting, a day after the administration asked the U.S. Supreme Court to weigh in on the proposal in a separate case.
The three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia upheld a May ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Carl J. Nichols that said an injunction against the order was premature. Nichols ruled that the Democrats and voting rights groups who challenged the order couldn't seek the injunction until the Trump administration issued formal regulations governing it. The administration started releasing those directives days later.
The circuit court panel, with two judges appointed by former Democratic President Barack Obama and one by Trump, found that was proper and there were no noted dissents. But the unsigned decision noted that if the administration truly tried to force such changes in the few months remaining before November's midterm election, it may well get halted by courts.
"The action the Order contemplates would involve the President, whom the Constitution vests with no express authority over the conduct of elections, undertaking a substantial and unfunded overhaul of election procedures — including the implementation of a nationwide reform to Postal Service mail-handling processes —on the threshold of the November election. Put differently, the Order 'may not prove feasible to implement in any manner whatsoever,'" said the ruling, quoting a prior legal opinion.
In a separate case filed by Democratic state officials, a federal judge in Massachusetts last month blocked the executive order from taking effect for this year's elections because it was already forcing states, which are granted the power under the U.S. Constitution to control their own elections, to revise their procedures on the fly. That ruling was upheld on Saturday by a Boston-based appeals court and then was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday by the Trump administration.

Shareholders voted at a special meeting Tuesday to enter into an ******* ignment for the benefit of creditors, an alternative to bankruptcy. The process transfers a company's ******* ets into a trust for distribution to creditors.
Vicarious was working to develop a single-port surgical robot that "shrinks the surgeon" to perform procedures inside the patient's abdomen but faced a series of delays in bringing the device to market and last year canceled plans for a clinical trial as it pushed to finish the design for the commercial version of the system.
Vicarious is shutting down 12 years after it was formed with the ambitious goals of improving patient outcomes, increasing surgical efficiency and addressing what its founders saw as significant limitations to legacy robotic platforms. A special prosecutor on Wednesday dismissed felony criminal charges against Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, who was indicted on accusations of threatening the jobs of New Orleans officials who fought a Republican-led overhaul of courts in the heavily Democratic city.
The case was put on hold almost immediately after the July 2 indictment, when the Louisiana Supreme Court said the local court and special prosecutor did not follow procedures surrounding the indictment. The dismissal by special prosecutor Laurie White came a day after New Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams, Democratic Mayor Helena Moreno and five City Council members sent a letter urging her to drop the case.
"What I did was not a crime, it was never a crime," said Murrill, a Republican. "I think this was a malicious prosecution."
At the center of the case are deepening rifts between the state's Republican leaders and Democrats who control Louisiana's most prominent city.
Orleans Parish online court records show White submitted the letters from the elected city officials and the prosecutor to a judge before dismissing each count. The case against Murrill was then ordered "closed."

BEIJING (AP) — The Chinese company that formerly owned British Steel demanded Sunday compensation from the U.K. government for investment losses following the nationalization of the manufacturer last week.
The British government took operational control of the company last year after Jingye Group said that it was considering closing the blast furnaces at its Scunthorpe plant in northern England, the last in the United Kingdom to make "virgin steel" from raw materials.
Jingye Group said in a WeChat statement that the nationalization move tarnished the credibility of the British government, spooked international investors and caused great losses to the company's operation and British taxpayers' funds. It also demanded that the U.K. government stop "trampling on international investment rules."
The Chinese company announced it had initiated negotiation procedures under relevant bilateral investment agreements, reserving all rights, including to international arbitration. Jingye said it will also represent British taxpayers seeking to hold the U.K. government and British Steel's management legally liable. However, it did not specify how it would handle the case.
"The U.K. disregarded Jingye's continuous investment and significant contribution and was only willing to provide almost zero compensation," it said.

Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) stock tumbled Tuesday, alongside shares of other medtech leaders like Abbott Laboratories (ABT), Stryker (SYK) and Medtronic (MDT), after HCA Healthcare trimmed its full-year earnings outlook, suggesting a drop in surgical procedures.
HCA Healthcare, the largest for-profit hospital operator, said inpatient surgeries declined 2.3% while outpatient procedures fell 3.4% in the second quarter compared with the year-ago period.
As a result, HCA now projects $6.3 billion to $6.7 billion in net income and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or EBITDA, of $15.4 billion to $16.1 billion. Solstice Advanced Mat (NASDAQ:SOLS) announced an agreement to acquire Element Solutions in a cash-and-stock transaction valued at approximately $14.5 billion, including the ***** umption of net debt, executives said on a conference call discussing the deal.
Under the terms outlined by Solstice President and CEO David Sewell, Element Solutions shareholders will receive $10 in cash and 0.5 shares of Solstice common stock for each Element Solutions share. Sewell said the consideration represents a 15% premium to Element Solutions' closing price on Friday. Upon closing, Element Solutions shareholders are expected to own approximately 44% of the combined company.

The combined company will operate as Solstice, with Sewell serving as chief executive officer. The board will include 11 directors, including Element Solutions CEO Ben Gliklich and two other designees from the Element Solutions board, subject to standard governance procedures. Solstice said it has fully committed financing in place and expects the transaction to close in the first half of 2027, pending shareholder approvals from both companies, regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

US-based medical technology company VB Spine has signed a definitive agreement with Augmedics to acquire the exclusive rights to the computed tomography-to-fluoroscopy (CT-Fluoro) technology for spine applications.
The agreement follows VB Spine's earlier acquisition of the exclusive rights to the Augmedics xvision Spine System platform.
The CT-Fluoro technology enables surgeons to register a patient's preoperative CT scan using standard fluoroscopic imaging.

This combination enables real-time 3D visualization, contact-force feedback, and index-guided ablation during live procedures.

The new features offer strengths in areas like surgeon autonomy and operating room workflows. In the first quarter of this year, Da Vinci 5 placements totaled 232 -- that's up from 147 in the year-earlier period, showing momentum for this new product.
Intuitive Surgical's moat is particularly strong for a few reasons. Most surgeons have trained on the Da Vinci system, so we could imagine that they would prefer using this system, one they know well. Kathie Lee Gifford has opened up about the "debilitating" chronic pain she has endured in recent years, brought on by the demanding "physical" nature of her career.
In the past two years, the former Today show host, 72, has undergone a series of procedures: a total hip replacement in 2024, followed by a second surgery after she overextended herself during the recovery period, and more recently, a cataract surgery.
The pain was so unbearable that Gifford "wanted to die a few times," she admitted in a new interview with People. "I wasn't going to hurt myself. I wasn't going to kill myself," she clarified. "I just didn't want to be here — as blessed as I am."
Looking back at her decades-long career in the entertainment industry, Gifford recalled: "A lot of it was physical. I remember doing Annie at Madison Square Garden for five weeks over Christmastime [in 2006], and I played Miss Hannigan. I wanted to make it big so that the little kids sitting could see it. I did pratfalls.
"When I look back on all of these years in this industry, I go, 'I can't believe I didn't fall apart years ago,'" she noted. "I've never abused [my body], I just used it."
