MUNCIE — The city of Muncie needed a high school football game more than it ever has.
On Friday, Aug. 21, the Muncie Central Bearcats and Delta Eagles answered the call by treating their fans to an instant classic — a 23-22 victory by the Bearcats that came down to the final second, literally.
With both communities still reeling from the calamitous flooding that swept through the area in recent weeks, the two teams fought their tails off to put a brilliant rivalry game together and give everyone who saw it a sense of unity in times of hardship.
"Everybody's going through stuff right now, but we had however long this game was to just be entrenched in it and go play this football game," Muncie Central coach Kyle Buresh said. "At the end of the day, that was a fun one that we all put on a show for our community tonight. Both teams did, really proud of the way both teams handled themselves, competed extremely hard but competed with first class."
Central clinched its victory in the very last second of the game. The Bearcats trailed 22-16 with 23 seconds left in the game and used their final timeout before a third-and-goal play. Junior quarterback Mason Ferguson was sacked on third down, forcing him and his teammates to hurry to the line of scrimmage and try to get one last snap off.

WEST LAFAYETTE — Kyle Holderfield's 34th birthday aged the Harrison football coach a decade.
But, alas, it was a joyous celebration by the end of a three-hour offensive showcase between Holderfield's Raiders and West Lafayette.
It wasn't until sophomore Easton Foley's leaping snag of an onside kick attempt that Holderfield could finally enjoy it, though. Foley's recovery with 50 seconds remaining clinched Harrison's 43-40 victory at Gordon Straley Field on Friday, Aug. 21.
"I felt 34 years old at the start of the game, and I feel like I might be 43 at the end of that one," Holderfield said. "That one was exhilarating."

The American team for the Solheim Cup is nearly set except for the three captain's picks for Angela Stanford for the Sept. 11-13 matches in The Netherlands. The CPKC Women's Open this week in Canada is the final qualifying event.
Lauren Coughlin clinched the sixth of seven automatic spots last week at The Standard Portland Classic. The previous spots went to Nelly Korda, Angel Yin, Jennifer Kupcho, Yealimi Noh and Auston Kim. That leaves one spot left between Allisen Corpuz and Andrea Lee.
However, the next two selections come from the women's world ranking. So even if Lee doesn't win in Canada this week, she locks up a spot in the world ranking at No. 37. The final spot from the ranking would come down to Lee (No. 59), Lindy Duncan (No. 61), Jenny Bae (No. 65) and Rose Zhang (No. 66).
Stanford will announce her two captain's picks after the tournament Sunday.
Europe filled out its 12-player roster on Aug. 3.

There's still more than a month left in the 2026 regular season for the WNBA, but it's never too early to start thinking about next year.
Organizations like the Seattle Storm and Connecticut Sun — which will move to Houston in 2027 — are likely thinking about the future as they have been eliminated from the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Golden State Valkyries, Minnesota Lynx and Las Vegas Aces have already clinched their spots in the postseason.
The WNBA's new collective bargaining agreement brought bigger contracts to the league, with salaries topping $1 million for the first time ever. While some players like A'ja Wilson and Aliyah Boston inked long-term deals this offseason, other players signed one-year deals and will once again be looking for big paydays. With a longer offseason — not a truncated one like this past year due to CBA negotiations — that might make time for free agent bidding wars.
Each team has at least one player they'd like to lock up and keep on their team for the 2027 season.
Here's each team's best pending free agent as we take a peek at the upcoming offseason.

Azzi Fudd's fans expressed dissatisfaction with the Dallas Wings' social media team on Monday after they celebrated Arike Ogunbowale's latest milestone. In the 78-70 loss to the Golden State Valkyries, Ogunbowale recorded her 1000th career **** ist. The Wings' X account posted a graphic, congratulating the veteran for her latest feat.
Fudd's fans didn't have a direct issue with the team celebrating Ogunbowale. However, they were angered that the No. 1 pick didn't receive the same recognition for breaking the franchise 3-point rookie records. Fudd has the most 3-pointers in a season, in a game, and in a quarter by a Wings rookie.
The Wings never posted about her setting the franchise rookie record of 61 3-pointers in a season, which she clinched on Aug. 3 against the Connecticut Sun. After seeing the shoutout for Ogunbowale, several Fudd fans slammed the social media team.
"it's not too late to post one for Azzi Fudd… no need to be shy, c'mon now," one fan said.
More reactions followed.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Gabby Williams had 23 points and seven rebounds, Veronica Burton added 16 points and five ******* ists, and the Golden State Valkyries clinched a playoff berth by beating the Dallas Wings 78-70 on Monday night for their sixth straight victory.
Golden State (25-9) has already surpassed its win total from last season by two and will get another chance on the postseason stage after becoming the first expansion franchise to reach the playoffs in its inaugural season of 2025. The Valkyries lost to the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx by one point in Game 2 of their first-round matchup.
Golden State center Kiah Stokes played 23 minutes in her return from the concussion protocol after she missed last Wednesday's home win against Chicago.
Another sellout crowd at Chase Center cheered the team to its 15th win in the last 17 games overall — among those fans Warriors star Stephen Curry, son Canon, and some teammates.
The Valkyries took off in the second quarter after another slow start, ending the first half on an 11-0 run on the way to a 44-28 lead at the break. Golden State began 3 for 13 while Dallas made seven of its first 10 shots to go ahead 15-8.

Several years ago, the SMU Mustangs were the scrappy underdogs, foregoing nine years of ACC media rights revenue just for a chance to compete in the conference. Now, the Mustangs are an established power in the league.
In its ACC debut in 2024, SMU seamlessly handled the competition. It finished 8-0 in league play, qualified for the ACC Championship Game, and clinched a spot in the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff. The Mustangs were 43 seconds away from a second-straight ACC ******* le appearance in 2025, surrendering a late touchdown at California to shatter their CFP dreams. Still, the Mustangs channeled that heartbreak into a positive, securing their first bowl victory since 2012 with a Holiday Bowl triumph over Arizona.
Now, the chapter flips to 2026. SMU is 14-2 in regular season ACC games, with both losses coming on go-ahead scores in the final 50 seconds. Under fifth-year head coach Rhett Lashlee, the expectation has been made clear, and that's to compete for conference championships and playoff appearances on an annual basis.
That expectation is especially warranted this year, given that it's the final season of quarterback Kevin Jennings — the engineer behind SMU's 2023 American championship, 2024 ACC Championship Game appearance, 2024 CFP berth, and 2025 Holiday Bowl victory. The Mustangs look to add to this list of accomplishments before Jennings graduates, as the quest to bring an ACC crown to Texas continues.
Rhett Lashlee enters his fifth year as head coach of the Mustangs, owning a 38-16 overall record and a spectacular 27-5 mark in conference play. While Lashlee remains in Dallas, his two coordinators who arrived with him in 2022 both departed this winter.

FSU's men's golfer Jack Whaley won the 126th U.S. Amateur Championship on Sunday at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. He is the first Seminole to win the tournament.
The rising senior beat Stanford's Jay Leng Jr. 4&3 over 36 holes to become the first Englishman to win the tournament since Matt Fitzpatrick in 2013 and third overall since 1911. The win earned him a spot in The 2027 Open Championship at St. Andrews and the Walker Cup in September for Great Britain.
He won the first hole with a chip-in to take an early lead and went up two holes by parring the third hole. Leng tied the game on the 10th hole with back-to-back wins. Whaley ended the first 18 holes trailing by two before they took a short break before playing the final 18 holes. He won four straight holes to go up two after 23 holes. Leng won the 24th, but secured birdies on the 26th and 28th holes to go up three.
He clinched the championship with a birdie putt on the 33rd hole.

Last season, the Premier League was arguably more competitive than it has been for years.
While the 65 points between champions ******* nal and bottom side Wolves was around the average for a 38-game season (63), a real revolution took place in mid-table.
Since the league was reduced to 20 teams in 1995-96, the gap between the top four and the bottom three – between what has often been the Champions League and the Championship – had been increasing as the seasons went by, with the 'bigger' clubs profiting from their European adventures and the extra money they earned by regularly finishing higher in the table.
But last season, the gap between the 'haves' and the 'have-nots' of the Premier League dropped from 44 points in 2024-25 to just 26 points – the smallest distance for 23 years (since 25 points in 2002-03).
The European places were more attainable than they had been for years. Despite taking a point fewer than when they finished seventh the season before, Aston Villa clinched Champions League qualification by finishing two places higher.

Manchester Super Giants clinched their maiden men's ******* le while Trent Rockets Women lifted their first-ever trophy as The Hundred's sixth season reached a dramatic conclusion at Lord's. The Hundred's sixth season signed off in style at Lord's, with Manchester Super Giants and Trent Rockets sharing the spotlight on a Finals Day that produced two contrasting ******* le deciders.

Manchester Super Giants, formerly known as Manchester Originals, survived a late collapse to defeat Trent Rockets by five wickets in the men's final, while Trent Rockets Women produced a ruthless display to crush Sunrisers Leeds by eight wickets and claim their maiden ******* le.

The Trent Rockets also walked away with an additional prize, winning the inaugural Helix trophy for the best combined franchise performance across the men's and women's competitions.
The men's final looked to be slipping away from Manchester Super Giants before Tim Seifert intervened with a breathtaking ******* ault. Trent Rockets posted 158 for 8 from their 100 ******* , with Aneurin Donald leading the recovery with a rapid 38 off 19 ******* , while captain Lewis Gregory contributed 32 from 19.

The Rockets had made a steady start through Ben Duckett, but their momentum was checked by a double blow. Spinner Noor Ahmad was involved in the dismissal of captain Sam Billings before removing Tim David for a duck, leaving Manchester with an opening to seize control.

Donald and Gregory then rebuilt the innings with aggressive strokeplay, pushing Trent towards a competitive total of 158. Manchester's response began with a clear intent to attack.

Seifert turned the chase into a spectacle, smashing 72 off just 38 ******* , including seven sixes. His calculated aggression kept Manchester ahead of the required rate and put the Rockets under immense pressure. Paul Walter provided valuable support, adding 22 off 14 ******* , with the pair putting together a blistering 66-run stand from only 31 ******* .

But just when Manchester appeared certain to cruise home, the final overs produced a dramatic twist. Mohammad Amir dragged the Super Giants back into the contest with a superb spell, conceding just 29 runs and helping create six consecutive dot ******* . Heinrich Klaasen and Michael Bracewell also departed as the pressure suddenly mounted.

With Manchester needing a boundary to settle the nerves, Liam Dawson delivered. He launched a towering six over deep midwicket with just two ******* remaining, taking Manchester Super Giants to 162 for 5 after 98 ******* and sealing their first men's ******* le.

Noor Ahmad finished with three wickets for Manchester, while Amir claimed three for Trent Rockets, but it was Seifert's extraordinary innings that ultimately defined the final.
If the men's final went down to the wire, the women's contest was almost the complete opposite. Trent Rockets Women dismantled Sunrisers Leeds, formerly Northern Superchargers, to secure a commanding eight-wicket

Rose Zhang said a "topped" shot on the back nine of her first round at The Standard Portland Classic got worse as the week went on. On Saturday, she even had treatment from a physio in the middle of the round and looked like she might not finish.
"Honestly, I felt like I put up a fight," Zhang told Golf Channel following the third round. "I know that I wasn't good at hiding it, which I wish I was. That I was playing tennis out there grunting. I felt like, you know, I just tried my best and that's kind of what you have to do in golf."
Zhang showed up again on Sunday and gutted it out, closing with a 68 to finish in a share of eighth. She is entered into next week's event in Canada, the final event before U.S. Solheim Cup team qualifying ends. This marked the former Stanford star's first top 10 since the Ford Championship back in late March.
A member of the past two U.S. Solheim Cup teams, Zhang currently sits 73rd in the Rolex Rankings, 14 places behind Lindy Duncan, who currently has the second and final qualifying spot. This week's performance from Zhang could ****** p Duncan out with one week to go. Alison Lee ranks 61st.

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Miguel Rojas announced his intent to retire after the 2026 season during last year's postseason run, but he may change his mind.
"It's been a wild ride," Rojas said to Dodgers Nation's Doug McKain after the Dodgers clinched the NLDS against the Philadelphia Phillies last October. "I've given it everything that I have every single night for the four years that I've been here. And hopefully I can finish my career here next year. Because I'm going to retire after next year."
The Dodgers did bring him back for another year, signing him to a one-year deal early in the offseason and offering him a player development role with the team after he retires.
According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, though, that offer may have to wait.
"Dodgers shortstop Miguel Rojas says he's thinking about changing his mind about retiring, and that it's possible he'll stick around for another year before he goes into a hybrid coaching/front office role," Nightengale wrote.

When U.S. captain Angela Stanford first placed the call to Auston Kim, it went to voicemail. A surprised Stanford gave it another try and this time, Team USA's newest rookie got word that she'd clinched her spot for The Netherlands.
"I'm shaking," Kim told Stanford while out playing frisbee in the backyard with big sister August.
Kim, 26, will be the 70th American player to ever compete in the biennial event Sept. 11-13 at Bernardus Golf in Cromvoirt, Netherlands.
She will be joined by 25-year-old Yealimi Noh, who also clinched her spot on the U.S. points list. Noh, who recently contended at the AIG Women's British Open, debuted in the event in 2021 as a captain's pick. She had a 2-1-0 record at Inverness.
That makes five U.S. players who have now secured their spots off the points list:

For the second time in a week, the Minnesota Lynx defeated the Las Vegas Aces, 92-87, in what could be a preview of the WNBA Finals.
The defeat dropped the Aces to third place in the league standings at 24-12. The defending WNBA champions are now five games behind the top-seeded Lynx (29-7) and 1.5 games back from the Golden State Valkyries (24-9) with eight games remaining in the regular season.
Olivia Miles led Minnesota with 23 points, 8 ***** ists, 4 rebounds and 1 steal. Napheesa Collier followed with 19 points while grabbing 6 boards. Natasha Howard and Kayla McBride each scored 13 points, and Howard snared 11 rebounds. Courtney Williams and Nia Coffey both contributed 12 points, with Coffey shooting 4-of-5 on 3-pointers.
After going into halftime tied 48-48, the Lynx ran out to a 62-52 lead midway through the third quarter on a 3 by Coffey. But the Aces went on an 10-2 run capped by a Jewell Loyd 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 64-62 with 1:49 remaining in the quarter. Coffey then hit consecutive 3s to put Minnesota back ahead 72-64 and two Miles free throws restored the 10-point margin.
In the fourth, Las Vegas closed to within 74-73 with 7:27 left in regulation, but Collier sank 3s on the Lynx's next two possessions to put them back ahead by seven points. The Aces twice cut Minnesota's lead to four points and made it a 90-87 game on a Chelsea Gray 3-pointer with 11.3 seconds remaining. But two free throws by Collier clinched the win.

Bayern Munich clinched another preseason trophy (we know, we know) as it secured a 3-1 victory over RB Leipzig to capture the prestigious Telekom Cup.
It was a very interesting game for the Bavarians, who did a little experimenting with personnel and the formation. Let's take a look at how it all played out. Here are some quick hitters on the match:
As always, let's begin with a look at the starting XI:
Vincent Kompany went with a mixed bag of a lineup, but was mostly comprised of returnees, but did also include newcomer Nathaniel Brown and youngster Tim Binder. Binder is a real live wire, but definitely needs some refining.
Binder's fearlessness is a great thing, but he does have to find a way to properly balance when to take his chances. He is surely a player with some potential, who could be another hidden gem from Bayern Munich's academy. If he can be a little more sure on the ball and keep that attacking mindset, he could be a real player to watch develop.

The Tupelo 49ers started fast, then had to endure a lengthy weather delay, and ultimately held on to beat Lincoln (Neb.) 7-4 at the American Legion World Series on Saturday.
With the win, the Niners clinched the Stripes Division ******* le, which locks them into Monday's semifinals against the second-place team from the Stars Division.
Tupelo (26-5-1) scored four runs in the second inning and two in the third before a lightning delay halted play. Colin Flurry's two-run homer – his third dinger of the weekend – kickstarted Tupelo's second inning. Eli McDaniels then doubled the advantage with his two-run double to right field.
In the third, Brayden Edmiston scored on a fielding error, and Will Moody drove in Flurry for a 6-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, the game entered a weather delay, which lasted about 90 minutes.
Lincoln immediately threatened once play resumed, putting runners on first and second with one out. That ended Tupelo starter Cade Lott's day, but Braedyn Lackie induced a pair of flyouts to avoid damage. Lackie went 3 2/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits.

There was a particularly distinguished passenger on a distinctly unglamorous airline. Rodri was on the Ryanair flight to Liverpool and part of the surprise for some was that, via Merseyside, he was returning to Manchester at all. The subject of bids from Barcelona, Rodri's future may lie in his native Spain rather than at Manchester City.
It is so far unknown if he incurred Ryanair's infamous fines for bringing the World Cup's Golden Ball in hand luggage or whether he stowed it under a seat. Enzo Maresca saw the man who lifted the most prestigious trophy of all briefly and gave him a big hug, he said. They would talk later. City's new manager coached Rodri when his goal clinched the Champions League and thus the treble in 2023. Whether he will ever manage him remains to be seen; minor back surgery would always have ruled Rodri out of Sunday's Community Shield against **** nal.
Man City are open to letting Rodri return to Spain but only if it helps fund his replacement (PA)
But with Barcelona expected to return with a third offer, Maresca may have to contemplate forging an entirely new midfield. His inheritance from Pep Guardiola was an enviable one in many respects, but if he is the continuity candidate, there will be change at the centre of the pitch. Rodri has a year left on his deal but seems to have decided to go. Bernardo Silva left when his contract expired; Guardiola's own departure made it a still more natural endpoint for one of his closest allies. Tijjani Reijnders is heading for the exit, too, off to Al Qadsiah for £51m, and if the Dutchman lost his place as Guardiola preferred an axis of Rodri and Silva, it was nevertheless the case that only six players made more appearances for City last season.
Guardiola famously said that, if he could pick 11 midfielders, he would. There were times when he had a surfeit of options: in 2019-20, for instance, he had not merely Rodri and Bernardo Silva but also David Silva, Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandinho.

North Oldham Little League, Kentucky's representative out of La Grange, defeated Indiana 8-5 on Tuesday, Aug. 11, to advance to the championship. That game, which began at 1 p.m. ET, did not finish until roughly 8:15 p.m. due to multiple weather delays.

HOUSTON, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Brent crude oil climbed more than $1 a barrel on Friday over ongoing uncertainty about the negotiations in progress that determine control of, and reopen, the key shipping artery of the Strait of ‌Hormuz.
Brent crude futures settled at $83.55 a barrel, gaining $1.06, or 1.3%. West Texas Intermediate futures finished at $78.18 a barrel, ‌up 89 cents, or 1.15%.
Oil futures settled more than $3 a barrel higher on Thursday as Iran reviewed a bill to ban U.S. and Israeli vessels from the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas normally passed before the war began at the end of February.
Oil prices fell earlier in the week as a possible solution to the conflict looked more likely, part of an on-again, off-again pattern that has persisted since the U.S. and Israel jointly struck the nation in late February, igniting a conflict ‌that has now stretched into a sixth month. Brent was on course for a weekly loss of more than 8%, while WTI lost more than 7%.
While this week's signals on a potential deal have sent a roller-coaster ride in market sentiment, the market remains in the dark as to what needs to happen for the agreement to be clinched, said Vandana Hari, founder of oil market ****** ysis provider Vanda Insights.

It is Day 36 of our 100-day countdown to kickoff. We are looking back at the 100 most iconic games in Dallas Cowboys history. The countdown will leads us right up to the opening game of 2026. Our look back doesn't depend on just one criteria for our rankings. We take into consideration things like how big the game was for the organization, how memorable the game was, games that had unusual events take place, games that are a part of NFL lore, Cowboys firsts, and games where the Cowboys just plain dominated. Variety is the spice of life and we have all different kind of Cowboys games to review. At the bottom, we'll link each day of the countdown so you can go back and check out any you missed.
We're giving you an interesting one for Day 36 on our 100-day countdown to kickoff, when we revisit the first great heartbreak in Cowboys history. The Packers came to the Cotton Bowl to face Dallas in the 1966 NFL Championship Game, which was held on New Year's Day 1967. The winner would represent the NFL in the first AFL-NFL World Championship Game, now known as Super Bowl I.
Dallas, a seven-season expansion franchise, had never achieved a winning record or postseason appearance. However, under the guidance of Tom Landry, their young team went 10-3-1, clinched the Eastern Conference ****** le, and earned the privilege of hosting Vince Lombardi's defending champions, the Green Bay Packers. Green Bay arrived at 12-2, boasting a roster brimming with championship experience. While Dallas possessed talent, speed, and ambition, this was their first encounter with the immense pressure of contending for a league ****** le.
The difference in experience was immediately apparent. Green Bay opened with a touchdown drive, capped off by Bart Starr's 17-yard pass to Elijah Pitts. On the ensuing kickoff, Packers rookie Jim Grabowski returned a fumble 18 yards for another touchdown, leaving Dallas trailing 14-0 despite not having run a single offensive play.
The Cowboys' resilience would eventually define the franchise, even though it could have overwhelmed a team making its first playoff appearance. After a 13-play possession directed by Don Meredith, Dan Reeves completed a three-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 14 before the first quarter ended. Dallas then attacked again, with Don Perkins breaking through for a 23-yard touchdown, erasing the entire deficit.

BALTIMORE — The Baltimore Orioles held on to Trevor Rogers at the trade deadline in part to maintain a semblance of hope they could go on a run down the stretch. If they were going to defy expectations and make a push for a playoff spot, the Orioles needed Rogers every fifth day.
Add Wednesday's game to the column of wins they might not have claimed without him.
Rogers allowed two runs on three hits and zero walks over six-plus innings to help lead Baltimore to a 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. The left-hander racked up nine strikeouts, one short of his career high and tied for the most he's struck out in a game since the Orioles traded for him in 2024.
With the win, the Orioles (56-58) clinched their series with the lowly Angels and gave themselves a chance to finish the night a game out of the third wild-card spot in the American League pending the result of Cleveland's game against the New York Mets.
Tyler O'Neill and Coby Mayo hit back-to-back home runs off left-hander Reid Detmers in the fourth to supply the Orioles' offense for most of the night, the second time this season the duo of right-handed power bats has hit consecutive homers (July 8 vs. Chicago Cubs). O'Neill's blast was his second in as many days, and Mayo's was his 11th off a lefty this year, tied for the second most in MLB.
