The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and quarterback Baker Mayfield continue to publicly negotiate as the two sides work toward a contract extension. Those talks haven't gone well so far, with Mayfield admitting he felt "disrespected" by the team's latest offer.
Because of that, team general manager Jason Licht came out Thursday and said the franchise tag would be an option next offseason if the team and Mayfield can't agree on a long-term deal.
While that makes things sound dire, Licht did reiterate that the team's goal was to work out a long-term extension with Mayfield.
The 31-year-old Mayfield is in the final year of a three-year, $100 million contract he signed with the Buccaneers in 2024. At the time, Mayfield was coming off a prove-it season with the team, where he threw for over 4,000 yards and chipped in 28 passing touchdowns. That performance earned Mayfield a long-term deal with the Bucs, and resurrected his NFL career after things looked bleak following a rough 2022 season.
Over the past two seasons, Mayfield proved his 2023 wasn't a fluke. He turned in a truly great year in 2024, throwing for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns, leading the Buccaneers to the playoffs. His numbers declined from that high in 2025, though he was still solid, throwing for 3,693 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Baker Mayfield made his feelings about his contract clear when he told reporters last week that he was feeling "disrespected" and "undervalued" by the Buccaneers.
But with Mayfield pledging to be focused on "all ball" going forward, General Manager Jason Licht is not concerned about the state of things between the front office and the club's quarterback.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Licht said the team still feels Mayfield is a franchise quarterback.
"Well, I'm not going to get into the specifics about the contract and all that stuff. But yeah, we think he is," Licht said, via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. "We love Baker. Our feelings for Baker haven't changed."
Licht also seemed to be understanding of Mayfield's comments from last week.

The forgotten man in the Cleveland quarterback rotation is forcing himself into the conversation by performing well in practice. But Dillon Gabriel has yet to officially enter the competition to win the starting quarterback job with the Browns.
Does he feel disrespected by that?
"Never disrespected," Gabriel told reporters on Wednesday. "I don't take things personally, it's a business. I'm focused on what I need to do to get better, and that's all I'm focused on. I'm present with that."
Gabriel also was asked whether he believes earning more reps gives him a chance to seize the job.
"I'm really just focused on mastering my reps," Gabriel said. "I really appreciate [pass game coordinator] Danny Bryer and [senior director of player development] James Cook. James Cook and [offensive skill development specialist] Demetric Felton are big on walkthroughs in the morning, which helps set me up for a good day. And afterwards with Danny Bryer, a guy I've really leaned on, getting coached up — three or five reps, talking through it as best I can and improving. And same with [assistant quarterbacks] coach [Matt] Baker, he's been really good for me."

Cleveland Browns quarterback Dillon Gabriel has been the invisible man in the early days of training camp as the third man in a depressing two-man quarterback competition.
Some of that is to be expected given that veteran Deshaun Watson is healthy enough to participate after missing all of last year with a twice-torn Achilles tendon. And Gabriel did not exactly light up the NFL in his six starts as a rookie, completing just 59.5 percent of his passes and seeing the Browns win just one of his starts.
Gabriel was statistically better than fellow rookie Shedeur Sanders in just about every metric that matters, however, so one could begrudge him for feeling a bit left out with the spotlight shining so brightly on Watson and Sanders.
But Gabriel does not seem wired that way, at least outwardly, as on Wednesday he said he never felt "disrespected" and that he understands the NFL is a business.
He also spoke confidently about being able to pick up what head coach Todd Monken wants from the offense given the similarities to what Gabriel ran in college (quote via a team-provided transcript):

After playing his entire career to this point with the Boston Celtics, Jaylen Brown seems ecstatic to be playing for the Philadelphia 76ers. It was one of the biggest trades of the offseason, as it saw Brown being traded for Paul George and a haul of draft picks.
From an outside perspective, it looked like a salary dump. Considering he was almost traded for Giannis Antetokounmpo just before that ended up going the Miami Heat's way, it signalled the end of Brown's time in Boston. The disrespect for the reigning Super Bowl LX champions Seattle Seahawks continues to grow. At this point, the growth is a daily feature. I'm talking specifically about the disrespect leveled at the Seahawks by the popular Madden video game franchise.
In the latest edition of the game, Madden 27, the team at EA Sports have been releasing their top 10 rankings for various positions, units and even teams. Seattle's elite defense was mightily disrespected earlier in the week, as Madden 27 had them as only the 10th best unit in the game. Out of the position rankings (defensive tackle, edge, linebacker, cornerback and safety) only one Seahawk - Devon Witherspoon - cracked the top 10 in any of those lists. Players like Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy II, Ernest Jones IV, Julian Love and Nick Emmanwori were nowhere to be seen.
Now, the disrespect continues to an equally insulting degree. On Friday, Madden 27 released their top 10 rankings for teams overall. Yes, Seattle did make the cut... but only barely. According to Madden 27, the Seahawks are only the 10th best team in the game. As for those ahead of them, well, just take a look for yourselves.
The Seahawks obliterated the 49ers in the Divisional Round, outlasted the Rams in the NFCCG (one missed field goal from going 3-0 against them last year) and humiliated the Patriots in Super Bowl LX.

Aside from the three teams I have listed in the tweet above (all with good reasons I laid out, of course) the other two insulting placements come in the form of the Detroit Lions and the Baltimore Ravens. The No. 3 and No. 4 ranked teams, really? Detroit finished 9-8 last season and weren't particularly good at anything, at least when compared to the Seahawks of course. As for the Ravens, they were 8-9 and missed the playoffs like the Lions did as well. I know Baltimore had injuries they dealt with, but they always have injuries! Not to mention they will be rolling with a first year head coach in 2026.

The first few days of training camp haven't exactly gotten off to a great start for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
First of all, defensive tackle Vita Vea announced he wants to be traded, and now, quarterback Baker Mayfield feels like the team is disrespecting him.
Mayfield is in the middle of negotiating a new contract, and he is not happy with their latest offer.
"I wanted a deal done, and set the deadline, and told them it was going to be all ball after that. And I did mean that," Mayfield said. Just feeling comfortable in feeling that."

In about two weeks, EA Sports will release Madden NFL '27 ahead of the 2026 NFL season.
Every year, before the latest edition of the game is released, Madden's player rankings are made public for gamers. Their calculation process for these rankings is extensive, and each position has measurements weighted differently. A lot of the ranking has to do with their performance over the last season, which is why Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels finished with only a 79 overall rating, while 2024 classmates Drake Maye and Caleb Williams finished inside the top 10.
Yes, Daniels was wildly disrespected, but he only played in seven games last season. Even in the games he played, Daniels was nursing injuries, so his game wasn't up to par with his 2024 season.
Daniels isn't the only one disrespected by Madden this year, though. In the rookie rankings, first-round draft pick Sonny Styles ranks 13th overall. He is the highest-ranked MIKE, but he landed behind guys like Keldric Faulk, Malachai Lawrence, and Akheem Mesidor, all of whom were drafted after him in the 2026 NFL Draft. Styles was the No. 7 overall pick, and many believed he'd go somewhere in the top five.
Styles received an overall grade of 78. The breakdown is as follows: Speed - 90, strength - 74, agility - 81, change of direction - 77, injury - 87, and awareness - 78.

Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler is tired of being an afterthought for Major League Baseball.
Wheeler, who entered his start Sunday against the Detroit Tigers with a 9-1 record, 98 strikeouts and a 2.28 ERA, was noticeably absent from the NL All-Star roster when it was announced July 6 and as replacements were named after players were injured.
After complaining about his snub following his July 7 start, Wheeler was approached by MLB about being an All-Star replacement. Wheeler declined because he felt disrespected by the league.
Wheeler has been one of the best pitchers in the league despite missing the first month of the season. Given his performance this season and the game being in Philadelphia, it seemed like a no-brainer that Wheeler would make the NL All-Star team.
After being passed over for a selection, Wheeler struck out a career-high 14 batters while allowing one earned run in seven innings in a win over the Cincinnati Reds on July 7.

ESPN has offered its take on the Pittsburgh Steelers' WR3 battle, specifically between third-year hopeful Roman Wilson and rookie Germie Bernard.
In ESPN's new ranking of the 2026 NFL rosters, in which the Steelers were completely disrespected, Bernard was projected to get the starting nod over Wilson as the third wide receiver, joining WR1 DK Metcalf and WR2 Michael Pittman.
Bernard, selected by the Steelers in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft, has incredible versatility, capable of lining up out wide, in the slot and even out of the backfield as a rookie. And honestly, that does give him a leg up on Wilson.
For the most part, the Steelers have been successful at drafting receivers in later rounds. But you wouldn't have guessed it based on Wilson's usage over the past two seasons. There was hope he was primed for a Year 3 breakout, but if Pittsburgh's offense plays out like ESPN projects, Wilson may not be given a chance.

The Atlanta Dream set a single-season franchise wins record last season. They brought back their core, traded for Angel Reese and, despite a midsummer hiccup, still are tied for the fourth-best record in the WNBA. Reese leads the league in rebounding (11.7 rebounds per game). Rhyne Howard (18.9 points per game) and Allisha Gray (18.3 points per game) are each top-12 scorers.
Not one of those three were named an All-Star starter on Thursday. In fact, the Dream didn't account for one of the 10 selected, a development Reese called "disrespectful" on Thursday. She was especially frustrated that Howard and Gray were omitted from a pool that features the Indiana Fever's Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell, the Las Vegas Aces' A'ja Wilson, the Dallas Wings' Paige Bueckers and Jessica Shepard, the Minnesota Lynx's Natasha Howard and Olivia Miles, the Golden State Valkyries' Gabby Williams and the New York Liberty's Breanna Stewart.
"I expect to be disrespected," Reese said, per ESPN. "For those two, though, I think they work so hard and they put a lot of work in, and the way that they're guarded every game and they [have to] adjust — he reason why we're where we are is because of those two.
"For us not to have anyone was just a slap in the face, but they're not going to say anything. I am."
Reese, Howard and Gray were among the biggest snubs in a dubious voting process that's facing scrutiny after ESPN's Alexa Philippou reported Thursday night that only about 85 of the WNBA's roughly 180 players submitted ballots for starters ahead of the July 25 exhibition at Chicago's United Center.

If no one else will speak up for her Atlanta Dream teammates, Angel Reese says she will.
Despite Atlanta tied atop the Eastern Conference standings at 12-8, no Dream players were selected as All-Star Game starters. Reese said the exclusion of her teammates Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray, and other Dream players, was "disrespectful."
"I expect to be disrespected," Reese said. "For those two, though, I think they work so hard, and they put a lot of work in, and the way that they're guarded every game and they (have to) adjust. The reason why we're where we are is because of those two."
All-Star Game starters were released earlier in the day Thursday by the league. The selections are determined by a weighted combination of voting categories: 50 percent by fan votes, and 25 percent from each of player votes and selected media votes. Howard ranked in the top four in media and player voting but only ninth in fan voting. Gray ranked seventh in fan voting but eighth by media and sixth by players. Reese ranked sixth across the board.
Reese listed various statistical categories in which Dream players rank among the top. Reese leads the league with 11.6 rebounds per game (11.6), and Howard leads the league with 2.5 steals per game and ranks second with 3.2 3-pointers per game. Guard Jordin Canada ranks second in the league with 2.1 steals a game.

It's been about a week since the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade, when we first discussed how Jaylen Brown might feel disrespected since he was reportedly dangled for the now-Heat star in a deal.
Since then? The trade rumors have been getting louder, as has Brown himself on social media. And with free agency officially kicking off on Tuesday, the chatter is only going to get louder as the landscape in the NBA will be figured out even more by the end of the day.

Country singer Bailey Zimmerman has apologized after he allegedly left his New Mexico hotel room trashed while on his Different Night Same Rodeo tour.
Zimmerman, 26, is accused of causing more than $16,000 in damage to a hotel room at Sandia Resort and Casino in Albuquerque after he canceled his May 27 show that was scheduled at the resort, according to court documents filed in Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court and obtained by The Independent.
A warrant was issued for Zimmerman's arrest last Thursday, though he has not been arrested.
The "Backup Plan" artist has since issued a statement regarding his alleged behavior, saying, per TMZ: "First things first, I want to apologize to the Pueblo of Sandia and to everyone at Sandia Resort & Casino. I never meant for any of this to come across as disrespectful. I am deeply sorry for my actions that transpired. I respect your community and the hospitality and appreciate the opportunity that was given to me to perform on Native Land. I take full accountability for everything that happened and I am sorry to anyone who feels hurt or disrespected."

Carson Beck delivers strong message after being overlooked in draft

Carson Beck fell to the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft in April before being selected by the Arizona Cardinals. And he thinks the other teams in the NFL made a serious mistake by passing him over.
When speaking with reporters during press availability at Cardinals facilities, Beck recently weighed in with his opinion on getting passed over in the first two rounds of the draft. And he delivered an impactful message to every team that skipped him over when addressing the snub.
“A lot of teams are going to regret passing on me," Beck said. "I’ve always believed I’m QB1 in this draft, and now I get the chance to prove it with the Cardinals. Super Bowl expectations start now. Some teams are gonna wish they trusted the tape more.”
Beck is coming off a season that saw him named a third-team All-ACC selection while helping lead the Miami (FL) Hurricanes to a College Football Playoff National Championship appearance, so, understandably, he feels a bit disrespected by falling to the third round of the draft.
