A decade ago, Seattle was the poster child of American tech prosperity. Amazon and Microsoft had turned a midsize Pacific Northwest city into a magnet for engineers, executives, and capital, adding roughly 40,000 jobs per year at the peak of the boom, according to the Puget Sound Regional Council.

Job seekers are exhausted. Tired of shooting résumés into the void and getting ghosted, many have started paying for AI tools that blast their application out to every open role they can find. But according to Greenhouse CEO Daniel Chait, employers are just as miserable—and he's got a name for the hiring nightmare: an AI doom loop.
"This is the first time when really both sides have been unhappy," Chait told Fortune. "The market just isn't working for either side."
Job seekers, he says, are "piling more and more job applications into the black hole and not getting any progress." It doesn't matter how many they send—they "just don't get anywhere."
So they've turned to AI tools that make the process less painful. "You can go search on Google, and there are tools that advertise, use AI to automatically apply to every Greenhouse job," the jobs board boss said. "Someone goes and buys that tool, it's like 20 bucks, and now they can just shoot out job applications willy-nilly to as many jobs as they want."
On the other side of the inbox, recruiters are drowning. There are currently 175,000 live jobs on Greenhouse's platform—and on average, for every job ad posted, around 254 job seekers are applying, pushing applications per recruiter up by 412%.

They did so in the aftermath of Brian Callahan leaving a few years ago. And they have consistently dealt with the fact Dan Pitcher has been a hot name on multiple hiring cycles now.

• HSBC's flash India Composite Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), compiled by S&P Global, fell to 54.3 in July from June's 57.1, confounding a Reuters poll median forecast for a jump to 57.7. However the index remained above the 50-mark separating growth from contraction.
• Export orders offered a brighter spot with international sales growing at the fastest pace since March.
• Among sectors, services was the biggest lag. The business activity index fell to 53.1 from June's 57.4 - its weakest reading since February 2022 - weighed by challenging market conditions, order cancellations and reduced client enquiries.
• Manufacturing was steadier but not strong enough to change the broader trend. The factory activity index eased to a four-month low of 53.9 from 54.2. Output and new orders continued to expand at a stronger pace helped by robust demand from overseas markets.

Ohio State will likely always be the king of sports in Columbus, but good on the local professional and semi-professional franchises for embracing that. The Columbus Clippers recently announced an Ohio State-themed game and custom jerseys, and the Columbus Blue Jackets paid homage to OSU when they played an outdoor game in the 'Shoe against the Detroit Red Wings.
Sometimes, the sports even cross, like the news we received on Thursday when the Ohio State women's hockey team announced the hiring of former Blue Jacket Jack Johnson. The former NHL defenseman played for Columbus from 2012-18 and then again for his final season in 2024-25. He carved out a niche for hitting and blocking shots while he wore the blue sweater, and now he'll be taking his knowledge to Nadine Muzerall's program.
"We're really excited to have a new member join our family here at Ohio State," Muzerall said in a release. "To bring in Jack Johnson is going to continue to make our program better, both on the ice and really contribute to recruiting. When we talk about Ohio State, we talk about family and how we're all united. I think it's very important that he exemplifies that. He's going to bring that to our program and I think our recruits are going to see that and I know our girls are going to feel that."
Johnson does bring a winning pedigree to Ohio State. He was a part of the Colorado Avalanche's Stanley Cup-winning team in 2022. He played his college hockey -- believe it or not -- at Michigan, so coming to the Buckeyes has to be a little bit awkward. Something tells me he'll fit in just fine.
"It's such a privilege and honor to be involved with the best women's college hockey program in the country," Johnson said. "I can't wait for the season to start and to continue Ohio State's pursuit of national championships."

Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: $COIN) is expanding its operations in Singapore as it prepares to grow across Asia.
The U.S. exchange plans to increase its workforce in Singapore by one-third to around 200 employees by the end of 2026.
The new hiring will focus on engineering, customer service, relationship management, and institutional sales, said Coinbase in a statement.

Members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) could support UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham's plans to channel more investment into towns, infrastructure and local economies, but are urging him not to repeat the tax mistakes they say damaged business confidence under the previous government.
That is according to a new ICAEW poll of 875 members conducted between 6 July and 10 July 2026, which found that business taxation is seen as the most urgent issue for the new administration.
Nearly 57% of the respondents said easing the tax burden on businesses should be Burnham's top priority on taking office.
Members said repeated changes to the tax system in recent years had created uncertainty for companies and weakened willingness to invest.
They also cited last year's increase in employer National Insurance contributions, which some described as "crippling" for small businesses. Respondents said the rise constrained hiring, investment and expansion.

Recently, Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano went on the Y-Option podcast, a podcast all about college football hosted by Yogi Roth, to talk about the state of the program, Schiano's optimism going forward, and how much the program has benefited from a change in leadership in the athletic department.
The podcast started with a conversational feel, with Roth asking Schiano about his personal life, his path to coaching, and how he sees his role as not just coaching the team but also helping prepare young men for life. One interesting thing they talked about during this segment was how Schiano addressed new defensive coordinator Travis Johansen's concerns about being there for his family, so he would feel comfortable making the move to Rutgers.
Schiano was also allowed to speak about the positive changes that have occurred because of the hiring of Keli Zinn and the new alignment at the university.
"We have never had vertical alignment from the president down through the athletic director to the football coach. For the first time we do, and that certainly means a lot when it comes to fundraising and NIL and all of that. But it is so much more than that. It's an attitude of excellence. It's winning is important, and the commitment to win," said Schiano. "I think Keli Zinn is going to do a great job here, and I think that President Tate understands what it takes to compete in this league."

Last month, USC baseball lost pitching coach Sean Allen, who was named the new head coach at Lamar. To replace him, the Trojans hired Hawaii’s Keith Zuniga. However, it appears as though that will not be the only **** istant coaching change that Andy Stankiewicz and USC make this offseason.
On Wednesday, it was reported that hitting coach and recruiting coordinator Travis Jewett will be leaving the Trojans for Vanderbilt, where he will take over as the de facto general manager. However, it took less than a day for USC to find his replacement, as Wednesday night, reports surfaced that the Trojans will be hiring veteran **** istant and longtime friend of Stankiewicz Bill Mosiello as their new hitting coach.
“Mosiello comes to USC after being an **** istant at several big-name programs in his career, including Cal State Fullerton, Arizona State, and four different schools now in the SEC,” Shotgun Spratling of 247Sports wrote. “But he is most well known as being a top **** istant at TCU for 11 of the last 13 years where he helped push the program to new heights. The Horned Frogs went to four consecutive College World Series appearances from 2014 to 2017 with Mosiello as the hitting coach.
“He had been the **** ociate head coach under Kirk Saarloos the last two seasons after a two-year stint as Ohio State's head coach. He went 60-51 with the Buckeyes and took them to their first Big Ten Tournament in a half decade in 2024, but left the position to return to Fort Worth. The Horned Frogs saw dividends right away as the team average improved 25 points in 2025, and TCU returned to the NCAA tournament (only to be beaten by USC) after not making it in 2024.
“But after TCU struggled to meet expectations this season, missing the postseason for just the second time in Mosiello's 11 years with the program, the Horned Frogs made multiple changes to their **** istant coaching staff, including parting ways with Mosiello. Washington Huskies coach Danny Sprinkle has completed his coaching staff with the hiring of 25-year NBA veteran ***** istant coach Charles Klask.
Klask, a graduate of Michigan State in 1999, began his coaching career in the NBA as a video coordinator for the Detroit Pistons in 2000-01 under then-coach Rick Carlisle. He spent the next decade as a scout with the Orlando Magic, working for Doc Rivers and Stan Van Gundy among other notable head coaches for the organization before he advanced into a coaching role.
Most recently, Klask spent eight seasons with the Denver Nuggets as an ***** istant coach, helping develop players like three-time MVP big man Nikola Jokić, while being on staff for the franchise's first championship in 2023.

Throughout his tenure with Iowa State, Matt Campbell never seemed like he could be tempted away from the Cyclones to take on a bigger job with a more prestigious program. That is, until Penn State came calling last year.
Still, even though Campbell left for new pastures, there were expectations of how Iowa State would transition. It was said that Taylor Mouser, Campbell's longtime ****** istant and offensive coordinator, would be set to ****** ume head-coaching duties. However, that did not become the case.
Instead of sticking with familiarity for the role, Iowa State went into complete reset mode with the hiring of Jimmy Rogers. While Rogers proved to have a solid year at Washington State, he is a clear step behind Mouser when it comes to experience with Iowa State's roster. It didn't even matter all that much, as 55 members of Iowa State's squad left this past transfer portal cycle. A total of 23 of them followed Campbell and Mouser to Happy Valley.

While the final decision is not yet set in stone, it is presumed that Aaron Philo — who arrived in Gainesville through the transfer portal to join his previous offensive coordinator at Georgia Tech, Buster Faulkner — will be lining up under center to start the season. The redshirt sophomore has the upper hand on redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr., who served as the primary backup last year, and true freshman Will Griffin heading to the opener of the 2026 campaign.
With that in mind, The Athletic's college football writers Antonio Morales and Sam Khan Jr. recently ranked every projected starter at the position from 1 to 138, organizing them all into seven distinct tiers. Philo finds himself ranked No. 55, which puts him in Tier 4 — right in the middle of the pack.
"Philo saw limited snaps (63 in 2025) while backing up Haynes King at Georgia Tech, so there's still much to learn. He has been effective in his limited duty, accounting for 29 explosive plays in his 180 career snaps (a 3.4% explosive play rate would be top 30 nationally if sustained over starter snaps)," they said.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Billionaire Warren Buffett said Wednesday that his decision to cut the Gates Foundation out of his charitable giving is more about believing his three kids are ready to handle giving away his entire fortune than it is about Bill Gates ' ties to convicted **** offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Buffett told CNBC that Gates' **** ociation with Epstein was "distasteful," but the 95-year-old investor suggested that Gates' actions weren't much different from mistakes he himself had made over the years in hiring the wrong person or in choosing friends.
"No one bats a thousand in the business of choosing people," Buffett said on CNBC.
Buffett said he "read a great deal since Jan. 1 in terms of what happened with Bill and Epstein. And I have read his remarks to Congress given under oath, and I read the cross-examination." He noted that Gates eventually ended his relationship with Epstein.

Throughout its existence, the WNBA has been made up primarily of Black women players. However, that does not extend to the league's coaches, and Dallas Wings superstar Paige Bueckers thinks that's a problem.
While Black women have made up most of the players in the WNBA since the league began in 1997, that is not true of the coaches throughout the league, as the WNBA does not have a single Black woman head coach. During a recent interview, Bueckers spoke out against that.
Following Sunday's game against the Chicago Sky, Bueckers was asked about the "process" she hopes to see in terms of hiring Black women to head coaching jobs, with the WNBA not having a single Black coach throughout the league.
Bueckers, who is white, said that she would like to see "equal opportunity and no discrimination based on what you look like, who you like, and anything of that nature," when it comes to the league making hires. She added that she thinks the league was "built on" the contributions of Black women.
"I think Black women — specifically, I grew up with a lot of prominent Black women in my life that were very important to me in how I was raised and how I grew up, being my stepmom, my AAU coach," Bueckers said via ESPN. There are a lot of new faces, but the talent level remains high for the defensive backfield. Daryus Dixson figures to jump into a starting spot at cornerback after playing in all 13 games in 2025. Audavion Collins and Zion Tracy should compete for the other starting spot. It would not surprise me to see them split snaps, and Tracy has experience as a nickel corner if Penn State chooses to run 4-2-5 schemes. The depth is a bit of a question mark, but Terry Smith has plenty of talent to work with.
Two Iowa State transfers- Marcus Neal and Jeremiah Cooper- will fill the void at safety left behind by Zakee Wheatley and King Mack. Neal has received significant NFL Draft attention for 2027 and has All-Big Ten potential after a breakout 2025 season. Cooper is a solid playmaker against the pass, though he is coming off an injury.
With no Ohio State, Oregon, or Indiana on the schedule, Penn State does not face many overwhelming passing offenses this year. USC and Washington should be the toughest tests for the secondary, and one of them is at Beaver Stadium.

There are a lot of questions around Penn State’s front seven, so Rojas’ health will be vital to the success of this defense. If he returns to form, the Nittany Lions should have one of the top linebackers in the conference.

He inherited a UCLA defense that finished No. 87 in total defense in 2022 and elevated them to No. 10 in 2023. Hiring Lynn appears to be a good fit for 2026 Penn State. With new players at all three levels of the defense and roughly half of last season’s production gone, the Nittany Lions need someone who can provide results on defense right away. The schedule is favorable and there are enough veteran players on the roster to make the transition smooth for Lynn.

According to Marcos Benito on El Chiringuito TV, Real Madrid have finalized a verbal agreement with Serie A outfit ACF Fiorentina for the permanent transfer of highly-rated young defender Victor Valdepenas.
The 19-year-old versatile centre-back has officially agreed to terms on a long-term five-year contract that ties him to the Italian side until June 2031.

John Davidson is keeping his toe in the NHL pool, but the longtime executive and former TV ******* yst is no longer with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Blue Jackets' senior adviser since May 2024 and president of hockey operations in two stints before that is now senior adviser for the Buffalo Sabres, who announced the hiring July 13. The move reunites Davidson, 73, with former Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen, the Sabres' GM whom Davidson hired for that role in Columbus in 2013.
Davidson also fired Kekalainen on Feb. 15, 2024, after the two signed off on the hiring of Mike Babcock as head coach, a stint that lasted just 78 days after the controversial coach was hired July 1, 2023, to succeed Brad Larsen.
Babcock resigned amid allegations that he violated players' privacy by pressuring them to show him photos on their cellphones. It ultimately led to an investigation by the NHL Players' ******* ociation followed by Kekalainen and Davidson taking the fall, with the former's eventual firing and the latter moving to a senior advisory spot in May 2024 after ******* isting a GM search that led to the Blue Jackets hiring Don Waddell as president/GM.

Mike Boynton Jr. has added some head coaching experience to his Michigan staff.
ESPN's Pete Thamel reported on Monday afternoon that the Wolverines are hiring Brown coach Mike Martin as an ****** istant. Martin, who is 44, has been the head coach at his alma mater since 2012 and holds a 171-202 record.
He did not lead the Bears to an NCAA tournament bid in his 13 seasons in Providence, though he did turn in five winning seasons and led Brown to a CIT bid in 2014 and a CBI bid in 2019. That season, he was also named the Ivy League's Coach of the Year.
Now, he'll provide some experience on staff for Boynton, who enters his first season as head coach after he was elevated following Dusty May's departure. Boynton managed to maintain nearly all of Michigan's roster despite the June coaching change, and now, he's shoring up his new staff.
The Wolverines retained much of their staff but saw some key changes. ****** istant Justin Joyner became the head coach at Oregon State, while Drew Williamson followed May to Dallas as an ****** istant. Akeem Miskdeen is still listed as a member of the Wolverines coaching staff, as is general manager Kyle Church.
