The Washington Huskies' defensive line underwent a massive facelift ahead of the 2026 season after losing ten players from the unit to graduation, the NFL draft, and the transfer portal.
However, Jedd Fisch still expressed considerable confidence in his defensive front, even as defensive coordinator Ryan Walters attempts to replicate the nation's No. 12 run defense from the 2025 campaign, when the Huskies allowed 100.08 yards per game.
"Night and day in a lot of ways," Fisch told Huskies Wire of Washington's defensive tackles during Big Ten Media Days on Thursday. "When you look at Elinneus (Davis), Derek Colman-Brusa, (Darin) Conley, (Desean) Watts, TI (Umu-Cais), Kai (McClendon), that's six guys that are interior D-linemen that have shown an ability to play at a very high level."
At outside linebacker, after injuries have ravaged the unit over Fisch's first two years at the helm, the depth also looks considerably different. The Huskies are looking to improve on a group that recorded just 24 sacks in 2025, which ranked No. 12 in the Big Ten, and have an experienced unit leading the way.
"(Russell) Davis is back, Isaiah Ward is back. Then you look at Jacob Lane on the other side, then Logan George; they've shown the defensive line in its totality is a different type of group than we've had in the five years that I've been a head coach. I think the ability for us to go in and out with players and keep them fresh in a long season, as well as the difference makers that I think we have there, is exciting."

Saudi ‌Arabia will organise the next three ⁠editions ⁠of the Asian Champions League Elite finals after the Asian Football Confederation's ⁠executive committee confirmed the country's provisional hosting rights had been made permanent.
The Saudis have hosted the first two editions of the event, which sees the quarterfinals, semifinals and final played in ‌a centralised venue, since the continent's premier club competition was restructured before the 2024/2025 season.
Jeddah-based outfit Al-Ahli have won the **** le on the two occasions the city has hosted the ⁠finals, defeating **** an's Kawasaki ⁠Frontale in 2025 before beating Machida Zelvia, also from **** an, in May.
The upcoming edition of the tournament, which ⁠features the domestic champions of the leading competitions from ⁠the region, will ⁠see the league phase expanded from 24 to 32 teams.
The qualifying rounds will start on August 11, ‌with the draw for the league phase to be held in Kuala Lumpur ‌on ‌August 18 and play commencing on September 14.

The Washington Huskies are a month away from beginning the 2026-27 season in an Apple Cup showdown against the Washington State Cougars at 1 p.m. PT on Sept. 6 at Husky Stadium in Seattle.
The upcoming season will be the third under current head coach Jedd Fisch, which resulted in positive results in his previous stops.
Fisch's time with the Huskies marks the second rebuild in two stops for the head coach.
Fisch coached from 2021-23 at his previous stop, the Arizona Wildcats. He led Arizona to 1-11 in his first season, 5-7 in his second and 10-3 in his third.
In Fisch's first year as head coach of Washington in 2024, UW went 6-7. Last year, the team finished 9-4 after a 38-10 win in the Los Angeles Bowl against the Boise State Broncos.

With the IBF world light-middleweight ******* le in his possession, Josh Kelly feels "it's a different version of me" since he dethroned Bakhram Murtazaliev as he promised to "put on a show" in his maiden defence against Caoimhin Agyarko on Saturday.

The Washington Huskies are aiming at some of the nation's best defensive linemen in the 2028 class, and among their top priorities is four-star Kingston Brown.
The 6-foot-3, 265-pound product of Carver High School in Georgia, who took an unofficial visit to Seattle in March for Junior Day, is ranked as the No. 193 overall prospect and No. 22 defensive lineman by the 247Sports Composite, and has quickly become one of the nation's most coveted underclassman pass rushers.
Brown holds 25 offers, with Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Notre Dame, and Texas A&M all among the programs in pursuit of his services, but after convincing him to take a cross-country trip to host him and extend an in-person offer, Jedd Fisch's coaching staff may have an early advantage in his recruitment.
During his sophomore year, Brown turned in 50 tackles, 21 for loss, with 3 sacks, a forced fumble, and an interception, while showcasing the versatile skill set that defensive coordinator Ryan Walters covets along the interior of the defensive front.
On film, Brown is a disruptive presence who plays with great power and a strong motor while lining up at both defensive tackle and as a standup edge rusher. Six months removed from a destructive knockout victory over Jake Paul, heavyweight superstar Anthony Joshua is back in the ring with eyes on a blockbuster clash against Tyson Fury later this year.
But before turning to Fury, Joshua must get past Kristian Prenga on July 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, his first bout since surviving a car accident in Nigeria in December.
"It’s no secret I’ve taken some time to consolidate and rebuild to be ready for stepping back into the ring and (this fight) is the next step on that journey," Joshua said in April.
While scarcely known on the heavyweight scene, Prenga is riding a 16-fight knockout streak. He has scored three-straight first-round stoppages, but against opponents with a combined record of 38-28-5.
"Anthony Joshua is a great fighter, but he made a terrible miscalculation in picking me as his opponent," Prenga said. "This is the kind of fight that changes everything in my life and his. The Washington Huskies secured a commitment from one of the nation's top quarterbacks in the 2027 cycle in four-star Blake Roskopf, and in Rivals' latest rankings update, the 6-foot-5, 235-pound product of Desert Edge High School found himself among the top prospects in the class.
The recruiting outlet ranked Roskopf as the No. 101 overall player and No. 8 quarterback in the 2027 class, as the promising signal caller, who chose Jedd Fisch's program over 29 other offers, including Mississippi State, North Carolina, and UCLA, continues to see his stock rise after an impressive junior season.
Even without one of his top targets, fellow Washington commit Zerek Sidney—who was limited to just one game in 2025 due to an injury—Roskopf posted some gaudy numbers. He completed over 66 percent of his passes for 2,815 yards with 37 touchdowns and 8 interceptions, while showing off a skill set that could help him turn into a starter at the Big Ten level.
"Blake Roskopf has the look of a riser coming out of his junior season at Goodyear (Ariz.) Desert Edge," Rivals' Charles Power wrote in his scouting report.
"He's a jumbo quarterback at around 6-foot-5, 230 pounds and touts one of the stronger arms in the cycle. While Roskopf easily generates impressive velocity, we're most impressed with his ability to get the ball up and out with a snappy, quick release. He cut down on turnovers and increased his production year over year."

Two world-title fights have been added to the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s next bout, as the British heavyweight faces Kristian Prenga on 25 July.
Joshua will take on Prenga in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in a warm-up fight for his long-awaited clash with Tyson Fury, which will take place at an as-yet-unknown date – potentially at Wembley Stadium in London.
Joshua, 36, will fight Albanian Prenga one night after Fury’s own warm-up bout, a contest with Mariusz Wach in Thailand.
And Joshua vs Prenga has solid support in the form of two world-title fights at the Jeddah Superdome, as Hamzah Sheeraz and Josh Kelly star on the undercard.
Sheeraz, 27, will defend the WBO super-middleweight ***** le against Simon Zachenhuber, having won the vacant belt in his most-recent outing – a second-round stoppage of Alem Begic in May, on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk’s victory over Rico Verhoeven at the pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

When Desert Edge High School wide receiver Zerek Sidney committed to the Washington Huskies in January, the Arizona product chose Jedd Fisch's program over Arizona State, Oklahoma, and USC as one of the most sought-after players in the West.
However, after pledging to the Huskies as a four-star prospect, Sidney has seen his stock fall throughout the offseason. The 6-foot, 175-pound prospect currently sits as the nation's No. 724 overall recruit and No. 84 wide receiver in the 2027 class, according to the 247Sports Composite, and has become the lowest-ranked of Washington's four commits at the position after injuries shortened his junior season to just one game.
Despite that, Sidney has still been one of the most important members of Fisch's recruiting class both on and off the field.
On the field, Sidney is the ideal fit for the slot role in Fisch's offense, although he also has the ideal speed and athleticism to play on the outside in the Z position, as fellow Arizona native Dezmen Roebuck did in 2025 when he earned Freshman All-America honors.
"Skilled wide receiver with a well-rounded game that should offer some inside-outside versatility with his tempo and hands," 247Sports' Andrew Ivins wrote in his evaluation.

Following in the footsteps of a program legend is no easy task, but in three-star offensive tackle Tye Kennedy's case, continuing the legacy of his father, former Washington Huskies star offensive lineman Lincoln Kennedy, he's more than prepared for what's next.
The 6-foot-4, 270-pound product of Mountain View High School in Arizona, who is ranked as the nation's No. 634 overall prospect and No. 59 offensive tackle by the 247Sports Composite, committed to his father's alma mater on July 1, choosing the Huskies over Arizona State, Michigan, and Utah, giving offensive line coach Michael Switzer some promising depth at tackle.
After growing up as a Husky fan thanks to his father, Kennedy stated that the plan Switzer and Jedd Fisch have to develop him behind presumed 2027 tackles Kodi Greene and John Mills.
"I feel like they have a great plan for me," Kennedy told Rivals following his pledge. "They're building something really special, and I just see myself being a part of it. They have a really great program...my future teammates are really great people, and I just love everything about it."
On film, the younger Kennedy, who missed the majority of his junior season with an injury, is an impressive athlete who clearly understands some of the finer points of playing the position thanks to his background. While he may need some time to continue developing physically and adding weight to his frame, Kennedy has all the tools necessary to carry on his father's legacy on Montlake.

Is new Michigan State head coach Pat Fitzgerald considered an upper-tier coach in the Big Ten? Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports has weighed in on that in his recent coach rankings.
Among the 18 coaches in the Big Ten, Fitzgerald came in right around the middle in Myerberg's rankings he recently released. He had Fitzgerald as his No. 11 ranked coach in the Big Ten -- right behind Minnesota's P.J. Fleck and right ahead of Washington's Jedd Fisch.
Here's what Myerberg had to say about Fitzgerald:
"Back in the Big Ten four years after being canned by Northwestern, Fitzgerald must show an ability to navigate through a landscape that has changed dramatically since his final season with the Wildcats."
Fitzgerald received some relatively high praise from Myerberg in these rankings, as I personally have not seen him ranked this high in similar articles. He is obviously an interesting use case given the success he experienced at Northwestern but with that coming during a different era of college football.

Fabinho’s summer has taken on fresh intrigue, the kind that tends to follow established players once their futures loosen from contract and routine. Recalled by Brazil for the 2026 World Cup after spending three seasons with Al-Ittihad, the former Liverpool midfielder now finds himself back in the market as a free agent, and speaking warmly about a club he once briefly called home.
His return to Brazil’s squad raised eyebrows in some quarters, largely because his recent football has unfolded far from Europe’s weekly glare. Yet there has been substance to his time in Saudi Arabia. As the Washington Huskies look to fill out their 2027 offensive line class, the only uncommitted prospect left on the board has been one of Jedd Fisch and position coach Michael Switzer's top priorities throughout the cycle, four-star DaJohn Yarborough.
The 6-foot-5, 340-pound product of Basha High School in Arizona is set to decide between a final four of California, Florida State, Mississippi State, and Washington, following official visits to the programs in May and June. The Huskies got the final chance to make an impression on him over the June 19 weekend, and now, with his July 11 commitment date looming, there's little clarity in which way he may be leaning.
However, as the Huskies continue their push to land his pledge and round out their offensive line class, that visit could loom large for several reasons.
First, Fisch and Switzer brought all of their top offensive line targets to campus at the same time in hopes of creating chemistry between the group, as Yarborough was flanked by center pledge Reis Russell, along with four-star Gecova Doyal and three-star Tye Kennedy, both of whom committed to the Huskies on July 1.
Second, now that Doyal and Kennedy have announced their commitments, the hulking prospect is the piece that could be a big complement to both the depth and talent Switzer is looking to build up front.

The bond between Washington Huskies head coach Jedd Fisch and quarterback Demond Williams Jr. goes far beyond when they first arrived on Montlake.
As a four-star recruit out of Basha High School in Arizona, Williams had originally committed to Ole Miss in December 2022. However, during his time with the Arizona Wildcats, Fisch was able to convince the coveted prospect to stay closer to home, and in July 2023, Williams backed off his pledge to coach Lane Kiffin and the Rebels before committing to the Wildcats.
In an interview with the Big Ten Network's Yogi Roth, Williams went in depth on that bond with Fisch that eventually led him to follow the head coach to Seattle after he was hired in January 2024 and eventually to stay with the Huskies after his brief flirtation with the transfer portal.
"I think our relationship is so strong now going into this season," Williams said. "Year three for him as the play caller, year three for me as a quarterback, so I think the sky's the limit as far as what we can do this year, and I think that this offseason, it's really up to us to get on the same page."
As Fisch continues to emphasize Williams' play in big games, with a trio of ranked teams on the schedule in Indiana, Oregon, and Penn State, being on the same page is critical, especially as the Huskies look for new playmakers to step up after running back Jonah Coleman and wide receiver Denzel Boston departed for the NFL draft.

When the Washington Huskies take the field this fall to kick off Jedd Fisch's third season at the helm with the Apple Cup against the Washington State Cougars, things will look very different.
With the Huskies also heading into their third season in the Big Ten, one of Fisch's biggest points of emphasis has been to add size and strength to the roster, and during spring practice, it was clear that his team had evolved significantly in terms of its physicality. This year, the Huskies should look night-and-day different from their in-state Pac-12 foes to open the year.
"I think the biggest change will be how we can win," Fisch said on Say Who, Say Pod on where his team has changed the most ahead of the 2026 campaign. "We needed to win like a Pac-12 team the last couple years. We needed to try to outscore or felt the need to win in the passing game. Felt the need to win by creating turnovers on defense, the best we could."
"I thought that we were built really good on the perimeter with (Tacario Davis and Ephesians Prysock), (Denzel Boston). But now the difference is the team we're putting out there is more trenches-based, it's a little bit more physical, it's built from the inside out, so I believe we can win some games even if we're not scoring 35 points per game."
In Washington's four losses in 2025, the Huskies couldn't keep pace on offense, averaging a meager 9.3 points per game. Now, Fisch believes that his team can play a style of football more suited for the Big Ten when his offense isn't hitting big plays.

Tyson Fury has announced details of his final tune-up fight before facing Anthony Joshua , revealing a clash against veteran Polish heavyweight Mariusz Wach in Pattaya , Thailand .
The bout, to be shown on Netflix , will take place on Friday July 24, which is just 24 hours before Joshua takes on unknown Albanian Kristian Prenga in his own warm-up fight in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Should everything go to plan in those two contests, boxing fans will finally get the long-awaited showdown between the two best British heavyweight boxers of their generation when Fury and AJ face off in a blockbuster event in the latter stages of 2026 , having agreed terms earlier this year.
Wach does have more of a track record then Prenga and fought for a world heavyweight ******* le against Wladimir Klitschko – impressing as he took the Ukrainian great the distance before losing a unanimous decision for the first defeat of his career.
However, that fight was way back in 2012 and the 6ft 7in Pole is now 46 years old, having dropped from a 27-0 record before facing Klitschko to now being 39-13.

A day after the Washington Huskies secured one high school specialist from Arizona in long snapper Braylon Logan, the Big Ten program dipped back into the Grand Canyon State to get a potential replacement for senior punter Hunter Green.
On Friday, a week after Casteel High School punter Nolan Balke began his official visit to UW, the standout junior made his college decision, choosing Jedd Fisch's program over the Arizona Wildcats after trips to both schools in June.
Balke, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound junior, is the No. 5-ranked punter in the 2027 class by Kohl's Kicking and should be able to give the Huskies an instant boost.
"Balke attended his first Kohl's ranking camp in May of 2026 and showed very promising upside as a punter," Kohl's Kicking wrote in an evaluation of UW's newest commit.
"His drill work was at the D1 level. He has the leg strength, coordination, and athleticism to play college football. Balke scored 109.26 points during the charting phase of camp and then really showed well in the afternoon drill work phase of camp. Balke is someone to watch in the month of June as a class of 2027 college prospect."

For Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies, the in-state 2028 class looks like it's going to be of the utmost importance as the program looks to level up in the Big Ten.
Among those prospects is four-star defensive tackle Aedyn Havili out of Eastside Catholic High School in Sammamish, who has quickly become a very popular target around the country after just two seasons of high school football. After tallying 33 tackles and 7.5 sacks during his sophomore season, Havili has rocketed up ESPN's 2028 recruiting rankings, as the Worldwide Leader In Sports' most recent update placed him as the No. 26 overall recruit and No. 5 defensive tackle in the class.
"It's been a blessing for sure," Havili told Dawgman.com's Scott Eklund of his rise on the recruiting trail. "All of these coaches showing me love, talking to me, getting to know me, it's been such a blessing to me and my family for sure, but it only makes me want to keep working and getting better."
The 6-foot-2, 320-pound defender has reeled in 16 offers, with Arizona, Arizona State, California, Michigan, and Utah all among the programs interested in securing his commitment, but the Huskies may have an early edge after extending an offer to him in June 2024, before he even took a snap at Eastside Catholic.
As the Huskies continue to make upgrades along their defensive line in the 2027 class, holding commitments from four-star defensive tackles Jon Ioane and Tevita Nonu, along with four-star edge rusher Chaz Gray, and three-star defensive lineman Matamatagi Uiagalelei, there's no such thing as too much depth along the defensive line in the Big Ten.

Even as the Washington Huskies continue to host official visits with prospects in the 2027 class, Jedd Fisch's coaching staff is still looking to build early relationships with recruits in the 2028 cycle, too.
That includes extending an offer to four-star offensive lineman Maxx Jones, a product of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. The 6-foot-3, 325-pound prospect, who is originally from Texas, is ranked as the nation's No. 210 overall recruit and No. 14 interior offensive lineman in the 2028 class by 247Sports, and is quickly turning into a priority target for programs around the country.
He holds 30 offers with Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas, and Texas Tech all among the schools in pursuit of his services.
On film, Jones is everything you'd expect from a player of his size. He plays with overwhelming physicality, consistently running through defenders to pave holes in the run game, while he's also surprisingly nimble and displays the ability to move laterally to combat quicker interior pass rushers.
As offensive line coach Michael Switzer continues to build up the size and depth along his offensive front, Jones looks like an ideal early target for the Huskies in 2028, while he also fits what Jedd Fisch is looking for as the head coach attempts to widen Washington's recruiting footprint.

The Washington Huskies have been on a hot streak with the 2027 class, with 11 of Jedd Fisch's 19 commits holding a four-star ranking on one of the three major recruiting outlets' rankings, and offensive line coach Michael Switzer appears close to landing another blue-chip addition.
On Sunday morning, Rivals' Brandon Huffman logged a crystal ball for the Huskies to pick up a commitment from four-star offensive lineman Gecova Doyal, a 6-foot-3, 270-pound in-state product of Puyallup High School, who is ranked as the nation's No. 357 overall prospect and No. 16 interior offensive lineman by the 247Sports Composite.
Doyal is in the midst of wrapping up his fourth and final official visit to Montlake after trips to UCLA on May 15, Utah on May 29, and Oregon on June 5. However, the battle for his pledge has long been believed to be a heated battle between Jedd Fisch and Dan Lanning, and Huffman's prediction is a great sign for the Huskies as Switzer looks to build more depth up front.
As Fisch continues to emphasize in-state recruiting, if the prediction does come to fruition, the Huskies would hold commitments from five of the top seven prospects in the state of Washington, per the 247Sports Composite rankings, with Doyal being the ideal depth addition for the interior of Switzer's line.
On film, the blue-chip prospect displays great footwork and the ability to play with impressive leverage, paving holes in the run game with ease before climbing to the second level, where he can overwhelm high school linebackers and defensive backs with his superior size and strength. While he'll continue to add strength to his frame to be able to hang physically in the Big Ten, he shows all the technical ability that Washington's coaching staff desires to play in the Big Ten.

Now that the Washington Huskies can turn more of their attention to the 2028 class, some early targets are becoming clear for Jedd Fisch's coaching staff.
Since he arrived in Seattle, Fisch has placed an emphasis on recruiting his home state of New Jersey, and four-star running back Tahmere Brown looks like he could be an important target for position coach Scottie Graham. The 5-foot-11, 188-pound product of The Pennington School is ranked as the No. 170 overall prospect and No. 12 running back in the 2028 class by the 247Sports Composite, and should become a priority target for programs across the country.
Washington is the most recent of 28 schools to extend an offer to Brown, as Florida, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, and Texas A&M are all among the programs in the mix for the high-end ball carrier.
"He is about as polished as you'll find out of the backfield in any class, including 2026, 2027, 2028, or 2029," 247Sports' Tom Loy wrote in an evaluation of Brown.
"He has a good, rock-solid frame and build, packed with burst and juice with the ball in his hands. He can catch the ball out of the backfield, create in ****** e, all while running between the tackles with wiggle and power. His patience, as such a young back, is incredible. He waits for holes to open up and flies through them. There is a reason why he has so many offers under his belt at this point, with so many more to come."

Electric racing has struggled to succeed. Many innovative series have encountered problems, with Formula E the exception rather than the rule. Combining sustainability with another niche – powerboat motorsport – could have been a recipe for disaster. But the electric E1 powerboat racing series has gone from strength to strength, attracting famous names from acting, sport, and music as team owner figureheads. What has been the secret of its success?
“We’re still here,” says Alejandro Agag, Founder of E1, as well as Formula E and Extreme E (recently mutated into Extreme H). “That’s already an achievement. It's always difficult to create a championship, especially in an area like boat racing.” That’s not to say that E1 hasn’t faced problems along the way. “Every championship has difficulty breaking through the media barrier. It’s hard to get broadcasted and very hard to get to the big audiences. That's still our challenge, but if you want to break that wall, first you need to have something that exists. The key to the championships that will survive is to have a business model that allows you to continue without revenue from the media, so when you get the revenue from media it’s on top.”
The incredibly innovative Extreme E series struggled with this problem. Its generally remote race sites meant there was almost never a physical audience, and no potential for marketing these as destinations. “The main success of E1 is the locations,” says Agag. “With some exceptions, like Monaco, they all pay, and in Extreme E we were going to very remote locations where they didn’t pay, because there was effectively no location. With Greenland or the desert in Chile, there was no business model for the venue. Here, there is a business model based on the venues. We have new venues like Angola. We have Lagos that we've done twice. We have Jeddah. In all of them, we make a profit on the event itself, which is the key.”
Agag was speaking before the E1 race in Dubrovnik’s beautiful Pile Bay. “Here, we are sponsored by the Croatian Tourism Board,” he explains. “They have an interest in attracting tourism. The main sponsor is the chain of hotels where we host the hospitality. They're interested in bringing people to the location.” However, a unique aspect of E1 is celebrity involvement. Some very famous people act as figurehead team principals and owners. These include actor Will Smith, legendary NFL quarterback Tom Brady, NBA superstar LeBron James, DJ and record producer Steve Aoki, tennis champion Rafa Nadal, Latin music favorite Marc Anthony, and multi-cup-winning footballer Didier Drogba. No other sport has such direct and diverse celebrity involvement.

The Washington Huskies have built a strong foundation along the defensive line in the 2027 class, and Jedd Fisch's coaching staff is looking to add to it when it hosts a highly-ranked defensive tackle for an official visit on Monday.
Defensive line coach Jason Kaufusi was able to convince four-star defensive tackle Sam LeJeune, who took an official visit to California over the weekend, to head north to Seattle for a few days. The 6-foot-3, 280-pound prospect from Poplarville, Mississippi, who is ranked as the nation's No. 105 overall prospect and No. 10 defensive lineman by the 247Sports Composite, received an offer from UW in mid-May, and the Huskies have been able to build a relationship with him quickly.
The visit is one of four officials scheduled for LeJeune, with Auburn and California now in the rearview mirror. He'll round things out with a trip to Florida State on June 12 as he looks to narrow down his list of 25 offers.
While compiling 58 tackles, 14 for loss, with 4 sacks, a forced fumble, an interception, and 5 field goal blocks during his junior season, LeJeune demonstrated all the traits that Kaufusi and defensive coordinator Ryan Walters are looking for to pair with four-star commits Jon Ioane and Tevita Nonu along the interior of the defensive line.
LeJeune plays with impressive physicality and a quick first step that make him disruptive against both the pass and the run. His athleticism could also allow him to move all over the formation, as far inside as a three-technique defensive tackle or as far outside as a true even front defensive end if Walters wants to deploy a four-man front.

With Jedd Fisch having finished up his second season at the helm of the Huskies, I have decided to update this post (originally published in July of 2023) to reflect the two head coaches who have reached the 2 year mark on Montlake since then and to see whether Coach Fisch’s 9-4 season has precedent in Husky history! Let’s dive in, to see what we can learn!
The first coach to make it to year two for UW was William B. Goodwin, who coached his second season all the way back in 1893. That season wasn’t the greatest for Washington, who opened the year with a win at Vivienda in Tacoma, 8-4, but then, Washington lost to the Tacoma Athletic Club at home, 6-4, tied the Athletic Club at Port Townsend, and lost to the Multnomah Athletic Club 30-0, and then Stanford 40-0. Just a brutal football season. Goodwin was dismissed after the year.
Back in 1896, Ralph Nichols drilled his team exceptionally well, with a brand new training regimen centered on running around the track before practices officially began. A novel concept, to be sure. This regimen didn’t translate into wins however. UW went 2-3, losing their first 3 games and winning their next 2. They were outscored 40-20 combined for the entire season.
The third coach to make it to the 2 season mark was James Knight, whose second year came in 1903. That season was by far the most successful of all the head coaches up to that point, with his team going 6-1 and their only loss coming against the Multnomah Athletic Club, losing 6-0. This included a 10-0 win against Washington Agricultural, now known as Washington State, in the Apple Cup.
Victor M. Place’s second team was captained by future UW coach Enoch Bagshaw, who played end, quarterback, and halfback. The team went 4-4-2, tying Seattle High School and Idaho to start and end the season, respectively. Washington’s fortunes drastically improved after this season, however.

The Washington Huskies have put themselves firmly in the mix for some of the top offensive linemen in the West in the 2027 class.
Among the prospects at the top of the board for position coach Michael Switzer is four-star Lincoln Mageo, who is ranked as the nation's No. 360 overall prospect and No. 17 interior offensive lineman by the 247Sports Composite, but the road may have just gotten tougher to secure his commitment. On Tuesday, Rivals' Ethan McDowell logged a crystal ball prediction for the Michigan Wolverines to come away with Mageo's pledge when he announces his commitment on July 11.
Mageo is set to choose from a top seven of Arizona, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas, UCLA, and Utah, alongside UW. He's already taken official visits to check out the Wildcats and Utes, and has trips lined up to see the Wolverines on June 5 and Longhorns on June 12 before he finishes things out with the Huskies on June 19.
As the Huskies look to build out their depth along the interior of the offensive line, Mageo is a great fit for the offensive scheme that Jedd Fisch and Switzer have installed on Montlake.
"He moves well for his 280-pound frame and consistently executes combo blocks and makes contact with second-level defenders from either spot," Huskies Wire's Alex Katson wrote in an evaluation of Mageo. "Down the field, Mageo continues to look for work, often sealing off defenders, then turning to remove another player from the play rather than staying latched to his man longer than necessary."

The Washington Huskies' lone commit along the offensive line in the 2027 class, Reis Russell, is an intriguing study in national recruiting rankings.
The 6-foot-3, 290-pound product of Valor Christian High School, who holds 35 offers from some of the nation's elite programs, and picked Jedd Fisch's team out of a group that also included Georgia, Florida, Miami, Oregon, and USC, is ranked outside the top 1,000 players nationally by the 247Sports Composite. However, that should change soon.
In ESPN's latest recruiting rankings, the Worldwide Leader in Sports placed Russell as the nation's No. 11 interior offensive lineman, which lines up much closer with the evaluation process that most major Power 4 programs went through before extending a scholarship to him.
While center isn't the most coveted position on the recruiting trail, which is what several national ***** ysts have leaned on when determining Russell's ranking, his film (and expansive list of offers) shows that he has all the traits needed to succeed at the college level.
On film, Russell displays tremendous power and explosiveness out of his stance. No matter where he's lined up along the offensive line, he shows fluid athleticism as he climbs to the second level and routinely disposes of opposing defenders with ease, while displaying the physicality that offensive line coach Michael Switzer desires along the interior of the offensive line.
