An Alaska teenager who survived nearly two days atop an overturned fishing skiff told his rescuers that his cousin had slipped away during the night and that his older brother remained beneath the vessel after the three were thrown into the frigid Bering Sea, according to rescuers and family members.
Derek Parker Aghnaanga, 15, was spotted Monday morning on the capsized skiff roughly four miles east of St. Lawrence Island after he, his 35-year-old brother Sidney Kulowiyi and their cousin disappeared during a fishing trip.
"Through the teeth chattering, he had mentioned that his brother was still under the skiff," Adam White, captain of the fishing vessel Northwest Explorer, told Anchorage affiliate KTUU-TV. "And then he said that, in the previous night, before our rescue, that his cousin had slipped away."
A GoFundMe page organized by relatives said Aghnaanga tried to hold onto his brother and cousin after they died, before their bodies were recovered.

A former California reserve deputy sheriff has been identified as the person who died after a pleasure boat carrying members of an extended family capsized in the frigid waters of San Francisco Bay near Alcatraz Island.
Clifford Joseph Boisa, 79, of Sutter County, died after the three-level recreational vessel sank Tuesday afternoon with 20 people aboard, authorities said. The Sutter County Sheriff's Office confirmed to Fox News Digital that Boisa served as a reserve deputy sheriff beginning in 1987.
Three passengers remained missing Wednesday after 16 others were rescued, including three people who were taken to local hospitals.
The U.S. Coast Guard said Wednesday it planned to suspend its search for the three missing passengers at sunset after crews spent roughly 23 hours searching more than 950 nautical square miles of San Francisco Bay.
"We have completely saturated the search area," Coast Guard Sector San Francisco Commander Capt. Jarod Tosczko said during a Wednesday news conference, thanking Good Samaritans who helped rescue people from the water.

SEATTLE (AP) — Mariners first baseman Josh Naylor, who exited Monday night’s victory over the New York Mets with back spasms, was out of the lineup Tuesday.
Naylor hit a tying home run off reliever Brooks Raley in the seventh inning Monday, but by the time he returned to the dugout, his back had stiffened up. Seattle manager Dan Wilson decided to give Naylor the day off Tuesday but said he could be available off the bench.
“(He’s) feeling better today for sure,” Wilson said.
Patrick Wisdom, who replaced Naylor at first base on Monday, was playing first again and batting seventh against the Mets. Wilson is batting .133 in six games.
Naylor is batting .254 with six homers and 25 RBIs. He got off to a frigid start this year, hitting .102 with two RBIs through Seattle’s first 15 games. The 28-year-old turned it on in May, batting .296 in 108 at-bats.

FAA says 7 people died and 1 was injured in private jet that crashed in storm

A massive winter storm dumped heavy snow and ice across a huge swath of the United States, leaving more than 800,000 homes without power, making roads impassable and triggering thousands of flight cancellations.
More than 100 million people were under winter storm warnings from New Mexico to Maine over the weekend as the system walloped roughly two-thirds of the country. The storm ushered in frigid temperatures, with sub-zero lows expected in many of the same areas through the middle of the week.

The U.S. may have a secret weapon against rising electricity prices

Imagine a restaurant open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week that always maintains a full staff. With the exception of weekend nights and the lunch rush, the restaurant will be empty a lot of the time. But the restaurant’s owner is paying to keep it open all the time - spending money on staffing and rent even when the number of customers is low.
That’s the reality of the U.S. electricity grid. It is built to handle “peak demand” - moments of high electricity usage that often happen in the height of summer or in the frigid cold

See it: Stunning photos of 2025's last full moon — the cold moon

The final full moon of the year — a supermoon known as the cold moon — shone brightly across the world this week.
It follows two other supermoons this year: the harvest supermoon on Oct. 7 and the beaver supermoon on Nov. 5.
A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon being at its closest point to Earth in its orbit. The moon, as a result, will appear slightly larger and brighter than usual.
According to the Farmers’ Almanac, December’s full moon is known as the cold moon, “reflecting the frigid season.” The

A triple whammy polar vortex is coming. Will your state feel the chill?

Three rounds of cold Arctic air from a shifting polar vortex are expected to plunge much of the central and eastern U.S. into a cold snap in the coming weeks, meteorologists say. The first wave of the triple whammy of winter weather is happening this week.
“The week will end with some of the coldest air of the season so far, as a front advances from the Midwest into the Northeast and mid-Atlantic,” said Renee Duff, AccuWeather senior meteorologist.

The icy moons at the outer reaches of our solar system are hiding a secret—and it could have important implications for life beyond our planet.
New research published in Nature Astronomy examines the surface features of the frigid moons of Saturn and Uranus, modeling the activity beneath their frozen shells. On Earth, tectonic forces are governed by molten rock. Moons like Enceladus, Mimas, and Iapetus (of Saturn) and Miranda and ****** ania (of Uranus), which get tugged at by the gravitational pull of their parent planet and neighboring moons, generate a heat from within as they squish and e
