Sep. 2—Fans will have the opportunity to see Gonzaga no fewer than five times at McCarthey Athletic Center this season during the team's nonconference schedule.
Gonzaga's fifth known home nonconference game will take place on either Nov. 10 or 11 against Incarnate Word, according to Rocco Miller of Bracketeer.com. A tipoff time and television details for the Incarnate Word matchup, as well as Gonzaga's four other home nonleague games, will be announced at a later date.
The Zags are squeezing the Incarnate Word game into the schedule between the Nov. 7 home opener against New Mexico State and a Nov. 14 matchup against LSU and first-year coach at Numerica Veterans Arena.
It will be only the second meeting between Gonzaga and Incarnate Word, which lost 103-68 at the Kennel during the 2017-18 season. Rui Hachimura and Zach Norvell Jr. scored a combined 35 points off Gonzaga's bench, with Josh Perkins adding 16 more points for the home team.
Incarnate Word is losing its top six scorers, including three players who averaged double digits, from last year's team that finished 12-19 overall and ninth in the Southland Conference with a record of 7-15.

It's been a rough start to the year for Texas volleyball, which lost to Arizona State in its season opener, was swept Sunday by No. 1 Nebraska in Las Vegas and lost starting outside hitter Abby Vander Wal to a season-ending knee injury.
The Longhorns, who fell from No. 2 to No. 9 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches ***** ociation poll, hope to find their groove in Wednesday's home opener against No. 15 USC (1-1). Texas is 4-1 against USC under head coach Jerritt Elliott.
Elliott also has a history with the Trojans, serving as USC's interim head coach from 1999-2000. He led USC to the national semifinals in 2000 and was named Pac-10 coach of the year in both seasons, sharing the honor in 2000. He was also named the 1999 AVCA Pacific Region coach of the year.

The Florida State Seminoles will open their 2026 season Saturday night against New Mexico State, and the Aggies are receiving a seven-figure guarantee for making the trip to Tallahassee. According to a contract reported by the Tallahassee Democrat, Florida State agreed to pay New Mexico State $1.4 million for Saturday's game at Doak Campbell Stadium. The agreement called for the payment to be made by July 15.
The matchup is what is commonly referred to as a "buy game," with a larger program paying an opponent to play a one-off contest at its home stadium. Those guarantees can provide important revenue for Group of Six and FCS athletic departments while giving Power Four programs an additional home date.
Florida State's payment to New Mexico State exceeds the guarantees attached to two of its nonconference home games last season. The Seminoles paid Kent State $1.2 million for its trip to Tallahassee in 2025 and East Texas A&M $450,000 for its visit to Doak Campbell Stadium. FSU defeated those teams 66-10 and 77-3, respectively.
Saturday will mark only the second meeting between Florida State and New Mexico State. The programs first played on Oct. 3, 1964, when the Seminoles earned a 36-0 victory in Tallahassee. New Mexico State enters this season after finishing 4-8 in 2025, its second year under head coach Tony Sanchez.
The Aggies represent the first step in a schedule that becomes considerably more challenging for Florida State almost immediately. After Saturday's opener, the Seminoles host te No. 20 SMU Mustangs in their ACC opener before traveling to play the No. 11 Alabama Crimson Tide in Week 3.

Aug. 29—CHAMPAIGN — Brad Underwood's address to the crowd at Atkins Golf Club ahead of the 25th annual Illini Rebounders/Lou Henson Golf Outing included a mea culpa.
The Illinois men's basketball coach brought up the sting of this past April's Final Four loss to Connecticut and his insistence the Illini would get back to that stage during his 31/2 minute speech. He also thanked the fans in attendance for their consistent support of the program he's about to enter his 10th season leading.
Then Underwood discussed the recently released nonconference schedule for the 2026-27 season. A 12-game slate featuring multiple games against power-conference teams, but one that notably didn't have any of those teams coming to Champaign to play at State Farm Center.
"I will apologize," Underwood said. "I'll take the heat. It was very hard. Because we're expected to be OK, ****** ody wanted to come to Champaign and play us in a home-and-home."
Illinois, of course, is expected to be more than just "OK" this coming season. Five returning rotation players from a Final Four team with a high-level transfer addition and a six-man freshman class led by five-star guard Quentin Coleman has the Illini in the conversation among the best teams in the country.

ONTARIO — Ontario girls soccer coach Larry Atkinson is as old school as it gets.
At the end of each season, he breaks out his pen and notebook paper that has every single one of his 20 completed seasons and the overall records of those seasons with the championships won written in them and adds that year's numbers.
His son and ***** istant coach, Greg Atkinson, on the other hand has a sophisticated Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that he updates on a game-by-game basis with goals scored, ***** ists, saves and wins and losses. So, when it came down to the debate on what his father's career coaching record was heading into the Warriors' nonconference Richland County rivalry game against Madison on Tuesday, Aug. 25, it was Greg's numbers that were legit. LANCASTER – It was a tale of two halves for the Lancaster football team in their season opener against visiting Hilliard Darby.
The Golden Gales were impressive in the first half, especially on defense, shutting out the Panthers to take a 9-0 halftime lead. However, the Gales' inability to move the ball with consistency in the second half proved to be their downfall. As a result, Lancaster's defense was on the floor more than it should have been, and Darby took advantage.
The Panthers rattled off 20 unanswered points in the second half. The Gales kept fighting and scored with 3:40 remaining to cut the margin to a one-score game, but it wasn't enough as the Panthers hung on for a 20- 15 nonconference victory on Friday, Aug. 21 at Fulton Field.
More: Starving for success, Lancaster set to usher in the McKinney era
Lancaster certainly played well enough to win, and it was one of those games where they had to feel like they let slip away. The glaring stat was that Darby ran 59 offensive plays compared to just 41 for the Gales.

Aug. 21—Gonzaga hasn't released its final nonconference schedule, but anyone willing to do some digging can probably discover a few of the missing pieces.
For example, a quick internet search of Montana State's schedule would've led someone to the third known home game of Gonzaga's 2026-27 nonleague slate.
According to Montana State's athletics website, the Bobcats are scheduled to visit Gonzaga on Nov. 17, one week before Mark Few's program takes on the 16-team Players Era Festival in Las Vegas.
A tipoff time and television broadcast details will be announced at a later date.
SB Nation's Gonzaga website, Slipper Still Fits, identified the matchup with Montana State hours after The Spokesman-Review discovered another home game against NAIA Eastern Oregon, thanks to an updated schedule on the Mountaineers' site.

USC football has a 2026 schedule which will give the coaching staff a chance to give a lot of players some meaningful reps in September. The staff will likely need to rotate a lot of players in and out of the lineup, and it shouldn't be a point of considerable debate, either.
This is not a complicated conversation, or at least, it doesn't have to be. USC starts its season with San Jose State, Fresno State, Louisiana, and Rutgers. That's four games the Trojans should win with absolutely zero problems whatsoever. Rutgers is a Big Ten game, and it's on the road, so that game has to be taken seriously in a way the first three aren't, but still, it's a game USC should win handily.
The Rutgers game is on September 19 in New Jersey. After the San Jose-Fresno-Louisiana set of nonconference games, Rutgers should serve as the dress rehearsal for the big one, the game against Oregon in Los Angeles on September 26.
USC football essentially has three games in which to rotate players heavily and arrive at decisions on who should play where, and how much. Phrased differently, USC's depth chart for Game 1 is a lot less important than the depth chart going into Game 4 game against Rutgers. How USC's roster looks and feels going into the Rutgers game should offer the likely template for what we are going to see against Oregon in Game 5, the matchup which might define and shape the whole season.
The coaching staff does not have to figure everything out on August 29 against San Jose State. That should be the beginning, not the end, of an evaluation process and a journey in which the coaches ensure that the extended roster gets a look in live action. Three weeks of games against smaller-conference schools should give the coaches an idea of what to do for Rutgers, and the Rutgers game should provide either confirmation or clear refutation of those instincts going into the Oregon battle.

Aug. 17—PULLMAN — Chalk up another game on Washington State's nonconference hoops schedule.
The Cougars will meet Seattle University on Dec. 19 at the Seattle Holiday Classic, according to a Monday news release, set for Climate Pledge Arena. It's part of a doubleheader showcase, which will also pit University of Washington against Baylor.
"We're looking forward to getting back to Seattle and bringing Cougar basketball to the thousands of WSU alumni in western Washington," WSU coach David Riley said in the release. "I believe playing the other Division-I teams in the state is an important part of developing the game and honoring its history in the Pacific Northwest. We look forward to facing the Redhawks at Climate Pledge Arena and welcoming Coug fans to the Seattle Holiday Classic."
It'll be the third meeting in the last two seasons for WSU and Seattle U, which split last season's series, then a West Coast Conference matchup. The Redhawks earned a 69-55 win in Seattle, and the Cougars followed with a 70-58 victory about a month later in Pullman.
It also represents another chance for each head coach to match wits. Riley and Seattle U coach Chris Victor were both **** istant coaches at Eastern Washington from 2015-17. In fact, both head coaches ran the same first play during their first matchup last season in Seattle.

For the first time in eight years, the UConn women's basketball team had an undefeated regular season last year.
Matching that in 2026-27 could be a challenge for the Huskies, who announced their difficult nonconference schedule on Monday.
UConn will not only play South Carolina in a rematch of the 2026 Final Four, but will also face longtime rivals in Notre Dame and Tennessee and take on heavy hitters Michigan and LSU.
After playing in three preseason exhibitions throughout the month of October, the Huskies will open the 2026-27 season on Nov. 2 by hosting Cornell. Tip times, TV and home venue designations have yet to be announced.
Ten of UConn's 12 nonconference opponents played in the 2026 NCAA Tournament, including four of the Elite Eight participants (South Carolina, Duke, Notre Dame and Michigan). The Huskies will face Texas (which also reached the Elite Eight) in an exhibition on Oct. 19.

MINFORD — Over the last 10 years, the Minford Falcons' girls soccer program has turned into a program that has consistently reloaded year-in and year-out — instead of rebuilt.
If Saturday afternoon's effort was any indication, Shane Tieman's club is in good shape once again.
Down 2-0 after two goals by Lily Ferguson through 29 minutes of play, Minford rallied from that deficit by getting equalizing top-shelf goals from Marley Rhodes and Makenna Enz and playing lockdown defense the rest of the distance en route to drawing Lynchburg-Clay in a 2-2 tie.
The contest, which officially kicked off the 2026-27 soccer season for Scioto County programs, was moved to Minford late Friday evening after originally being scheduled at Lynchburg. The nonconference matchup was moved due to standing water on Lynchburg-Clay's playing surface.
Tieman was impressed with how his roster of 24 played, particularly considering that Minford wasn't even able to see the pitch last week as a team.

Much has been made of Indiana football's less-than-impressive nonconference schedules — especially after the Hoosiers' two-game series with Notre Dame was canceled.
The programs were scheduled to play on their respective campuses in 2030 and 2031.
Notre Dame turned around and used those newly created open dates to restore its series with Southern Cal. But by taking the Irish off their future schedules, the Hoosiers don't have a Power conference opponent outside of the Big Ten scheduled over the next six seasons. IU still has open dates in 2030-2032 it could add to.

OXFORD — Football season officially arrived at Yager Stadium on Wednesday, Aug. 5 as Miami University opened fall camp with heightened expectations and just one month to prepare for a challenging season opener at Pittsburgh.
The first practice of August brought the energy that accompanies every new season, but Miami coach Chuck Martin said the excitement must quickly give way to preparation as the RedHawks begin their pursuit of another Mid-American Conference championship.
"It's great to be back out here," Martin said. "We've had a great offseason, great spring, great summer. The kids are well prepared, and we're excited to get out here and get going."
Miami opens the 2026 season Sept. 5 at Pittsburgh before returning home to face Holy Cross. The RedHawks also travel to TQL Stadium to face Cincinnati for the annual Victory Bell game and host Connecticut to complete a demanding nonconference schedule before beginning MAC play.
Martin wasted little time reminding his team that the opener against the Panthers leaves no room for a slow start to camp.

Aug. 6—Illinois football training camp is underway. But that isn't the only Illini team building up to the start of their seasons. Beat writer Scott Richey spotlights three other Illini programs before they get going in the 2026-27 school year:
Saturday evening's exhibition at Marquette will mark the only time between now and the end of the month Illinois will play away from Demirjian Park. Katie Hultin's second season as coach will officially begin with four straight home matches. None bigger, of course, than the Aug. 13 season opener against No. 19 Georgia, which will pit Illini junior forward Cayla Jackson against her old team in the Bulldogs' return of a 2024 match in Athens, Ga. Georgia won 2-0, with Jackson scoring her first career goal in her collegiate debut for the Bulldogs.
The Big Ten's move to a 17-match slate, where each team plays every other conference member once puts more emphasis on the nonconference portion of the schedule. League play will serve as its typical résumé booster, but 11 nonconference matches now have more weight. Illinois will play twice at home — Aug. 28 against Cincinnati and Aug. 30 against Syracuse at Huff Hall — to start the season, but key matches loom with a Big Ten/SEC Challenge showdown at Tennessee on Sept. 1 and a home-and-home with Marquette (Sept. 11, Sept. 13).
Both Illinois' men's and women's teams boast the same fall schedule, starting with the Fighting Illini Invitational on Sept. 4 at the Orange and Blue Golf Course in Savoy. Three weeks later, the Illini will head to Columbia, Mo., for the Gans Creek Classic and close out their regular season slate on Oct. 16 at Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind. Those three meets will serve as postseason preparation for coach Eric Johannigmeier's teams, with the Big Ten championship scheduled for Oct. 30 in Madison, Wis., at Thomas Zimmer Championship Course.

Aug. 5—A challenging year awaits Wayne in the eyes of head coach Roosevelt Mukes.
The Warriors nonconference schedule consists of a road game at Fairfield before hosting state powers Cincinnati St. Xavier and Lakewood St. Edward. The rigors of Greater Western Ohio Conference play follows.
"That's why you come to a place like Wayne High School to play a schedule like that and just compete," Mukes said.
Wayne competed well in 2025. The Warriors reached the Region 2 final for a second consecutive season. That has the team hungry to take the next step needed to get back to the state final for the first time since 2015.
"Just knowing what the seniors what they left off, we got to finish what they [started]," senior Aaden Curtis said.

USC football is dropping Texas Tech from future schedules. You know that the national media reaction will focus on Lincoln Riley being soft or weak. We aren't going to deal with that well-worn topic here. Let's simply pivot to what the Trojans should do to replace that game on their schedule before, it should be noted, Notre Dame comes back onto the slate in 2030. This is not a long-term plan, but a short-term deal.
The obvious answers: Stanford and Cal. USC regularly played the San Francisco Bay Area schools for a long time. Now that both the Trees and the Golden Bears are out of USC's conference, a nonconference meeting with those schools makes all the sense in the world. What makes even more sense is that since Stanford and Cal have to make cross-country trips to play ACC road games, they can surely use a nonconference game in which they don't have to travel a long distance. A home-and-home with USC is such a logical and obvious solution to a problem the Cardinal and Bears have in Palo Alto and Berkeley, respectively.
Stanford or Cal versus USC. This is the nonconference game which obviously needs to happen in the coming years. If people are upset about the Texas Tech series getting nixed, having Stanford or Cal step in as a replacement would be welcome and happy news for a lot of Trojan fans.
