True story, I was at a tailgate before the National Championship and members of the ‘91 National Championship team led the crowd in the Say Who, Say What chant. It was definitely an unforgettable moment!
It’s been a while, but I don’t think I’ve done this one yet. This season, the Huskies will play Eastern Washington as their third opponent. I grew up in Cheney so it’s always nice to see the Eagles and the Huskies play. Unlike in 2011 (where the Huskies escaped their opener with a 30-27 victory against the then defending FCS Champion Eagles) or 2014 (where the Huskies won a 59-52 shootout against an Eagles team ranked number 2 in FCS), the last time the Huskies played Eastern was pretty easy. Jacob Eason tossed 4 touchdowns and had 349 yards, including a throw that still ranks among my top 5 most beautiful throws by a Husky, and Rich Newton chipped in 91 yards and a touchdown as the Dawgs routed the Eagles 47-14.

NEOSHO, Mo. — About 130 area wrestlers converged on the Neosho square for the Square Off on the Square Takedown Tournament on Wednesday, sponsored by Neosho Youth Wrestling.
The event, in its second year, featured four mats of action with wrestlers from kindergarten through 12th grade in front of the Newton County Courthouse and before hundreds of fans.
Neosho Youth Wrestling head coach Carter Boatright said his group got the idea for the Square Off on the Square from watching a video on social media of a similar event in Nebraska a couple of years ago.
"It was on a square like this," Boatright said. "I was like, 'Man, we can do that. So we kind of threw it together last year, last minute. We had 110 kids wrestle last year, and this year, we are over 130. So we have grown a bit."
Dash Chester, 12, of Neosho, wrestled in last year's Square Off. He said he has been wrestling since he was 7 years old and got into wrestling to help with his growth as a football layer.

We are just 44 days from Texas taking the field against Texas State and it's SEC media days week! Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns will take centerstage in Tampa today, but Arch Manning is already a topic of discussion. Jordan Rodgers, former Vanderbilt QB and ESPN **** yst, shared his thoughts about Manning heading into the season. While some have stamped Manning as a "sure thing," Rodgers is not as convinced.
Now, Rodger's full comments are much more nuanced than just doubting Arch Manning. He acknowledges Arch's ability to improve and how he fully expects him to become a first round pick next spring. Regardless, many Longhorn fans took exception with the comments, calling it unfair. Once watching the full comments, I'm not sure Rodgers is incorrect about Manning heading into the season.
The one thing we have to clarify to start the conversation: the word "generational" is often overused in sports, especially college football. Cam Newton and Lamar Jackson are examples of generational athleticism. Arch Manning is not as athletic as those guys. Patrick Mahomes and Caleb Williams have generational arm talent. Arch Manning's doesn't match those guys. That's not to say Manning doesn't have great athleticism and great arm talent, but it's not "generational".
Rodger's biggest point for Manning was he needs to be more efficient if he wants to be a first-round pick in the NFL Draft. I'm not sure I share that sentiment. However, that is based on what I believe Manning will be, not what he has been. That's the difference Rodgers is seemingly trying to highlight. That being said, there is no argument against the idea that Manning has to be more efficient.
Arch Manning finished the season on a tear. From the Mississippi State game forward, he totalled 19 TDs, 2 INTs and led Texas to a 5-1 record. However, during that time he also had just one game where he completed more than 63% of his passes. On the season, he completed just 61.4% of his passes, ranking 81st in the country. In the past three seasons, the national championship QB has finished in the top 10 in completion percentage in the country. It's not a requirement, but he has to get closer to 66% this season for the Texas offense to find their rhythm.

TAMPA, Fla. — During an Auburn football scrimmage this spring at Jordan-Hare Stadium, the program shared a snippet of one quarterback chatting with another. Those passers were Cam Newton and Byrum Brown, bridging generations of the program at one position.
The former doesn't need much introduction. He was a Heisman Trophy-winner and national champion on the Plains. The latter has yet to play a meaningful snap as a Tiger, but after helping South Florida turn around the past three seasons, he'll strive to do the same for his new home.
Stadium music drowned out all other noise in their 20-second introduction, but at SEC Media Days, Brown shared what the message was from one of Auburn's most-heralded former players.
"It was just go out there and be you," Brown said Tuesday, July 21. "Be a dog, and that's really it. Just go out there and be a dog and, like, you did at the past institution, will this team to victory."
Brown spent four seasons in total with the Bulls, but he was their starting quarterback for all three seasons of coach Alex Golesh's tenure.

“I can’t get no respect.” Perhaps Rodney Dangerfield was a fan of the Indianapolis Colts because that is exactly how it feels around here sometimes. We see a lot of the same with the Pacers. A small market kills a team’s chances at nationally televised games, regardless of how good they may be. It’s worse in the NBA, but the Colts are on the docket for only two primetime games. That is straight up disrespectful when compared to the rest of the league.
The Downs brothers, Josh and Caleb, have a podcast on which Cam Newton was a recent guest. Caleb was drafted by the Cowboys, so you know they are going to get a disproportionate number of games under the lights no matter how good they are. With six games set for primetime, Newton quipped, “Caleb … you’re walking into a Netflix special. Josh over there went to a team that’s barely on Tubi.” It may sound rude on the surface, but it’s a joke that rings true. Even the 4:25 slot is barren for the Colts this year. Unless you live in the area or have NFL Sunday Ticket, the chances of seeing a Colts game are low.
It’s hard to yell foul completely on this one for a few reasons. The Colts had a great start to the year, but a rough finish. They missed the playoffs. Should that type of team be rewarded? Additionally, the NFL cares about money and not much else. Wherever LeBron James goes, so goes the money. That is why Adam Silver can’t make the schedule. I have watched some horrible Christmas Day Lakers games while much better, small market teams sat at home. Exact same concept in the NFL. Just like a Thunder-Pacers Finals wasn’t as lucrative as a Knicks-Spurs Finals, the NFL prefers huge markets on its biggest stages. Indianapolis, as great as it is, just can’t compete in that arena.
There aren’t many teams with fewer primetime games than the Colts. You’d have to scrape the bottom of the barrel of teams to find some with less. Here is the good news. With success, games can be flexed, and what time the Colts play doesn’t matter much. Winning is all that matters. The Colts, just like the Pacers, have to force their respective leagues to have no choice but to put them in the national spotlight. It isn’t easy, but if the Colts win and continue that in future seasons, expect more big time games in big time spots. They have to earn it first.

Clark was among several notable names laid off from the company this week following the network’s finalized acquisition of NFL Network earlier this year.
Former NFL player-turned-analyst Ryan Clark was one of the biggest names let go by ESPN earlier this week as part of mass layoffs across Disney. Unlike some of his former co-workers at the Worldwide Leader in Sports, he learned of the decision to be laid off as he was on air for “NFL Live.”
On Wednesday, Clark responded to an article from TMZ Sports about his dismissal, suggesting that he wasn’t forced off the air during a commercial break. The report from TMZ suggested that the decision for Clark not to return on air was mutually agreed upon between him and ESPN executives. He appeared via Zoom for a segment and was not physically on set in Bristol, Connecticut. However, he no longer appeared on the show after what would be his final segment.
“I wasn’t forced?” Clark questioned on Wednesday afternoon. “I ask, ‘Should I be done now?’ The answer was ‘yes.'”
Clark was among several former NFL players to be let go from the network between Monday and Tuesday. Among the layoffs were former MVP Cam Newton and Bart Scott, along with NFL Network ****** yst Charles Davis. ESPN boss Jimmy Pitaro confirmed they had to make “difficult decisions” regarding the layoffs as the shedding of talent also came with the full integration of the NFL Network team going into the upcoming football season.

NFL ******* yst Ryan Clark was among many employees to exit ESPN in the mass layoffs following the NFL Network acquisition. The details surrounding Clark's exit, specifically when he was notified, has been a hot topic, and Clark decided to share the truth Wednesday.
In a post quoting a TMZ report suggesting he wasn't forced off the NFL Live set upon his dismissal, Clark wrote, "I wasn't forced? 'I ask, should I be done now?' The answer was 'yes.'"
TMZ is reporting that Clark was going to be notified of his role in the mass layoffs Tuesday, but ESPN got word of a report announcing Clark's exit was coming out imminently, so the company decided to notify Clark immediately. ESPN and the rest of the sports media industry were left reeling Tuesday as the Mothership ejected approximately 10 on-air talents, while pink-slipping a large contingent of behind-the-scenes staffers at NFL Network.
After speaking with multiple sources, here are my five takeaways from the layoffs, which included ESPN dropping talents such as Ryan Clark, Karl Ravech, David Lloyd, Tom Pelissero, Cam Newton, and Bart Scott:
Chairman Jimmy Pitaro made it clear that ESPN's biggest round of layoffs in three years was tied directly to Disney's acquisition of NFL Network. Anytime two companies merge, the bean counters look at who's doing what. When they find two people doing the same job—or close to it—one goes out the door.

That's what's happening as ESPN absorbs a network it competed with for over 20 years. ESPN has made "significant progress" integrating NFLN, Pitaro wrote in an internal memo obtained by Front Office Sports. But as always with mergers, it "had to make some difficult decisions," added Pitaro.
ESPN will broadcast its first-ever Super Bowl from SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Feb. 14, 2027. Televising a Super Bowl has been a corporate dream of ESPN's since its founding as a scrappy wannabe in 1979. ESPN management and parent company Disney are laser-focused on creating the best, most thorough Super Bowl coverage ever. Anybody on-air during what ESPN is humbly calling its "Year of the Super Bowl" will go down in company history. The competition for those choice on-air slots will be brutal.
The game announce team of Troy Aikman, Joe Buck, Lisa Salters, and Laura Rutledge are locks. Ditto for Sunday NFL Countdown regulars Mike Greenberg, Rex Ryan, Randy Moss, Alex Smith, Tedy Bruschi and Adam Schefter. And look for legendary anchor Chris Berman to play a major role as the living embodiment of ESPN's 47-year history.

There's no bad blood between the worldwide leader and the Carolina Panthers' all-time leading passer.
On Tuesday, news broke that franchise legend Cam Newton was let go from his role as a panelist on ESPN's hit show First Take. The former quarterback, who spent two years at the debate desk, took to his own desk over on the set of 4th & 1 with Cam Newton to speak on the parting of ways.
"You can't make me hate ESPN," Newton stated on Wednesday's episode of his YouTube show. "What I learned, it was an internship, almost.
"The production value—they're the leading sports source for a reason. They have the leading talent not only in front of the camera, but behind the scenes . . . that make sure whether it's a live show or whether it's in studio, that they are always on the cutting edge of topics and information and also how it's rolled out. So, when the news came about, yes, I felt like anybody else would."

Hours after ESPN cut ties with him in the same round of layoffs that ended Ryan Clark's 11-year run at the network, the former Carolina Panthers quarterback framed his brief run at First Take as something closer to an internship than a second career.
"Working alongside some of the most talented journalists and sports individuals that cover sports was something that got me to realize I have a newfound respect for the skill," Newton said. I am a former athlete that did not study journalism, so now when you see how production actually works, you'll be a fool not to take your notes."

The 21st century has featured extreme highs and lows for Auburn football, but the highs have been something to behold.
The Tigers won a national championship in 2010 behind arguably the single greatest individual season in the sport's history from Cam Newton, played for another in 2013 and nearly cracked the four-team College Football Playoff in 2017. However, since the 2020s began, it's been a rough time on the Plains.
AU has only finished above .500 once in this decade, and it came amid a 6-5 pandemic-shortened 2020 season that culminated in coach Gus Malzahn's dismissal. The program is now on its third coach since then after it hired Alex Golesh this offseason.
Speaking at his first SEC media days on Tuesday, Golesh said the goal at Auburn is clear: return the program to national prominence.

A Carolina Panthers legend has joined the wave of layoffs over at the worldwide leader.
As first reported by Bobby Burack of OutKick, ESPN is set to part ways with Cam Newton. The former quarterback and franchise great had served as a debate partner on for ****** yst Stephen A. Smith on the network's hit program First Take during football season.
Newton is now one of a handful of names to pop up during ESPN's latest exodus. A few other reported departures include former safety Ryan Clark, former linebacker Bart Scott, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero and NFL Network ****** yst Charles Davis.

Roland-Story, the No. 12 team in Class 3A, advanced to the 3A Region 1 championship game with wins over Iowa Falls-Alden (2-0) and Pella Christian (13-1). Ames saw its season come to a close with an 8-0 setback against No. 10 Des Moines Roosevelt in the 5A Region 3 semifinals on July 11 in Des Moines.
Gilbert defeated Nevada in the 4A Region 2 quarterfinals, 2-1, before dropping an 11-9 slugfest to Newton in the semifinals. Ballard also reached the 4A Region 2 semifinals, earning a 6-1 win over Webster City in the quarterfinals before suffering a 12-4 setback to No. 2 Carlisle in the semifinals.
Collins-Maxwell saw its season come to a close with an 11-5 loss to No. 3 St. Edmond in the 1A Region 3 semifinals. The Spartans defeated North Mahaska in the quarterfinals, 9-5, on July 8.
Colo-NESCO fell to North Mahaska by a 12-0 score in the 1A Region 3 first round on July 6.

Quarterback Fernando Mendoza has moved on to the NFL. But he has earned one more accolade for his accomplishments at the college level.
Mendoza was named the 2025-2026 Big Ten Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Mendoza won the CFP national championship with Indiana to cap last season, also winning the Heisman Trophy for his performance for the Hoosiers.
He is the sixth student-athlete from Indiana to win the honor, the first since track and field’s Derek Drouin in 2013.
Mendoza became only the fourth player in the common draft era — and the first from the Big Ten — to win the Heisman, win a national championship, and then go No. 1 overall in the same season. He joined Joe Burrow, Jameis Winston, and Cam Newton in accomplishing that feat.

BUIES CREEK — Campbell will travel to Durham on Tuesday, Dec. 15 to take on Duke — just a few months before the 35th anniversary of the teams facing off in the 1992 NCAA tournament.

CU traveled to NC State in the ‘20-21 and ‘22-23 campaigns, played at Duke in ‘21-22, at Virginia Tech in ‘23-24, at North Carolina in ‘24-25, and last season traveled to Wake Forest.
The Blue Devils defeated the Camels 82-56 on Mar. 19, 1992 in the NCAA tournament first round at the Greensboro Coliseum on the way to a second-straight national ****** le. Christian Laettner led Duke with 22 points, while Mark Mocnik scored a game-high 29, including 7-of-13 threes, for the Camels. That 1992 Duke team included eight future NBA draft picks, including first round choices Laettner (‘92), Bobby Hurley (‘93), Grant Hill (‘94) and Cherokee Parks (‘95).
On Jan. 13, 1997, Duke defeated the Camels 84-59 at Durham. Jim Fitzpatrick (19) and Corey Best (14) hit double figures for the Camels, while Greg Newton led Duke with 14. The ‘96-97 Duke roster included Chris Carrawell, Steve Wojciechoski, Jeff Capel and Nate James.

It's been a rollercoaster ride over the last two weeks for former Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold.
Arnold was arrested and charged with eight felony counts of robbery and kidnapping, but was later released on a $1 million bond.
But he was released by the Lions the same day. Former NFL MVP Cam Newton says that although he doesn't agree with what Arnold did, he doesn't think that he's a bad guy, and he even understands why he may have committed this alleged crime.
“He went to Alabama. Obviously, having a letter of recommendation to the judge from Nick Saban. This does not match who he is,” Newton explained on his 4th&1 podcast. “But what I will do in this particular situation is use Terrion Arnold’s situation to not only speak to Terrion, but also to speak to athletes and people of influence around the world.
“You don’t think you’re a big deal, brother," Newton added further. "You don’t think you’re a big deal, sister, until something happens that will remind you that you can be on top of the world one day, next day the world could be on top of you. Terrion knows better, and at the end of the day, was he wrong? He was only wrong because he got caught. And when you unpack what happened, and the amount of money or the things that was stolen, it will leave anybody outraged.”

An 11-hit offensive attack — led by Briar Goda's homer, three hits and two RBIs — helped Terre Haute's Wayne Newton Post 346 beat the host Post 218 team 11-5 in Sunday's championship game of the Washington, Missouri American Legion baseball tournament.
Goda also scored twice, as did teammates Ian Samm, Linden Jenkins and Parker Higham.
Terre Haute wasted no time in building a decisive lead. Post 346 scored six runs in the top of the first inning, more than enough to secure the win.
Post 346 now carries an 18-0 record into the Danville, Illinois tournament, which runs Friday through Sunday.
In Sunday's Missouri finale, Terre Haute also got a home run and a single from Noah Fields. Jenkins drove in two runs with a double and a single. Derek Morrison tripled.

The Cincinnati Bengals didn’t have many surprises during the stretch of OTAs and minicamp.
Joe Burrow was in town doing the expected stuff with his cast of weapons and a fully returning offensive line. With its new faces, the defense had a positive, quiet stretch.
Maybe one of the most notable exceptions, though, was cornerback Josh Newton, who just got a spotlight from ESPN’s Ben Baby as the biggest surprise player of the stretch.
“The third-year cornerback filled in as an outside corner and had an interception in a 7-on-7 period, Joe Burrow's lone offseason blemish,” Baby wrote. “Newton hasn't really been considered a viable option at that spot, but he might have put himself in the discussion as a depth player at outside cornerback behind Dax Hill and DJ Turner.”
We’ll see if Newton can turn the corner and secure a spot on the depth chart for himself.

Like many Americans last week, former NFL MVP was stunned by comments from UFC fighter Josh Hokit about former First Lady Michelle Obama at last week's America 250 celebration.
Newton made it clear which side he was on, and it wasn't Hokit's.
"In our culture, we don't play about certain individuals. Certain people are untouchable," Newton said. "If you utter anything disrespectful about an Obama, it doesn't matter if it's the daughters, it doesn't matter if it's the wife… They are some good people, they served this country well," he said on his 4th and 1 podcast.
"See, that was an innocent bystander," he continued. "But Mr. Josh, you're going to stay away from that one. We don't play about that one."
"Who knows whether he was in his right or wrong mind," Newton said. "But at the end of the day… be very careful and be very mindful, the people who you ain't cool with or who you don't like."

The Washington Commanders wrapped up the offseason program on Thursday, completing their three-day mandatory minicamp. The next step for the Commanders is training camp, which begins in around five weeks from Ashburn.
After Thursday's practice, head coach Dan Quinn met with the media to discuss the offseason and what lies ahead until training camp. Quinn specifically mentioned eight players who stood out this offseason.
"The team’s worked incredibly hard, you know, strength and conditioning-wise, they've made significant gains," Quinn said. "But just a few people I thought jumped out, defensively, [DE] T.J. [Maguranyanga], so I thought he's one that's improved. Jay-Z [DT Jer’Zhan Newton] I thought had great camp linebackers, [LB] Kain [Medrano] and [LB] Jordan [Magee], through this time was big."
Some of those names are interesting. Maguranyanga is a member of the NFL's International Player Pathway program and was with the Commanders last season. He's a former rugby player and hails from Zimbabwe. While he faces long odds of making the team, Washington does get a roster exemption if he is back on the practice squad in 2026.
Could this be the year for Newton? A second-round pick in 2024, Newton wasn't healthy in his first two offseasons. He's been healthy this offseason, and the Commanders remain high on him. His performance against the Cowboys on Christmas Day gave a glimpse into his potential. Quinn believes new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones can help unlock Newton.
