Angelique S. Chengelis, Connor Earegood, John Niyo, and Bob Wojnowski of The Detroit News predict the outcome of Saturday's Michigan-Rutgers game at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey (12:30 p.m., Big Ten Network/94.7 FM).
▶ Angelique S. Chengelis: Rutgers coach Greg Schiano has always been tied to defense, but the Scarlet Knights have struggled defensively this season and ranks 128th in scoring. That could make this the "get-right" game for Michigan's offense, which is sorely in need of a confidence-building performance, especially from the run game and offensive line. Michigan's No. 3-ranked defense likely won't have the challenge it was expecting now that Rutgers QB Dylan Lonergan has been ruled out. He left last week's game at Northwestern in the first quarter because of a hit to the head and backup AJ Surace has struggled with six touchdowns against five interceptions this season. Michigan's defensive backs were expected to have their hands full facing 6-foot-6 receiver KJ Duff, but he is "doubtful" for the game, according to the Big Ten availability report. Pick: Michigan, 31-10
▶ Connor Earegood: Rejoice, Jason Beck. You're going to save your job this week. This Michigan offense may be wasting one of the nation's best defenses, but it will get an important tune-up against Rutgers. You know, the Rutgers team that lost to UMass, which is 1-3 in Mid-American Conference play. Oh, Rutgahs. Its availability report suggests some key starters will not play. Its starting QB is hurt, its star receiver is doubtful. A one-read quarterback could probably pick its defense apart at full strength. That's a good opponent for a true freshman in Tommy Carr to face in his second career start, after the **** er of the unknown wore off last week and showed you that maybe, just maybe, it isn't the guy under center who's the problem but rather the guy calling his plays. If Beck takes some inspiration from the Michigan Stadium videoboard and runs the ball between the tackles from time to time, Michigan should roll to an easy win. If it's another stinker, it will make for an interesting crowd in next week's rivalry game. Pick: Michigan, 34-7
▶ John Niyo: If Rutgers can't cure Michigan's offensive woes, nothing will. Greg Schiano's days appear numbered in Piscataway, and the statistical numbers make it obvious why: Rutgers ranks 128th nationally in scoring defense and has given up 161 points in four Big Ten games thus far. Of course, that's more points than the Wolverines have scored in seven games this season. But this defense should be the cure Michigan's inefficient run game needs, and no matter who's playing quarterback, there'll be opportunities to create explosive plays in the pass game. In four Big Ten games, Rutgers already has given up 15 plays of 30-plus yards. Pick: Michigan, 34-16
▶ Bob Wojnowski: There's no such thing as a breather for the Wolverines, with six of their seven games decided on the final possession. Last week's OT loss to Indiana wa

The 2026 season might have been a struggle for the North Hunterdon High School football team, but last weekend's victory over neighborhood rival Voorhees in the 51st annual Milk Can Game is a good way to go into the offseason on a supremely positive note.
Senior Matt Esposito led the way in the 21-18 victory, which increased the Lions all-time lead in the series to 36-14-1 and gave them their first victory of the season. Esposito rushed 27 times for 193 yards and the three touchdowns, including two in the second half. He also pitched in five tackles on defense, plus an interception.
The senior finishes with 916 yards and nine scores for the season, plus a receiving touchdown, while recording 36 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble in the Lions' defensive secondary.
"Matt had a tremendous year and was an instrumental piece to the team," North Hunterdon coach CJ Robinson said. "He brings the effort, attitude, and toughness on Friday nights. His performance last week is a great reflection of the work and commitment he's put in this year. To see him play at that level and help lead our team to a win was special. We were fortunate to have had him as part of our program."

The Tennessee **** ans are having one of the worst seasons in their history. At 1-6, they're off to their worst start to a season in nearly 20 years. Cam Ward's **** ans have struggled on both offense and defense, and they have been unfortunate with injuries.
Ward has also had a troubling start. He has been criticized for his efficiency and decision-making all season. In seven games, he has thrown for 1,179 passing yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions.
There have been rumors of the **** ans looking to go away from Ward, especially after defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons' trade to the Chicago Bears. But NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the **** ans will continue to back Ward despite a 1-6 start.
Fans reacted to Schefter's comments.
"It will be their ultimate downfall. They are not a QB developing team, or they make bad picks with high draft choices. Vince Young, Jake Locker, Will Levis, now it's Cam Ward!" one fan said.

The Packers' defense delivered the answer Dallas needed to see originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Dallas Cowboys entered Sunday night hoping a players-only meeting and a new defensive voice would help turn the season around. Instead, Green Bay's defense delivered the most convincing response of the night.
The Packers intercepted Dak Prescott twice and held Dallas to 13 points in a 23-13 victory at Lambeau Field. The Cowboys entered the game averaging 27.6 points per game, but they went into halftime trailing 17-0 and could not make up the difference.
Green Bay improved to 4-2 with its third straight win. Dallas fell to 2-4, and the loss extended a frustrating stretch for a team that had hoped to find a spark after its Week 5 defeat.
Prescott's two interceptions halted promising Dallas possessions. Evan Williams picked him off in the second quarter, and rookie Brandon Cisse recorded the first interception of his career later in the half.

Maryland football made a coaching change ahead of its bye week, but not the one fans were expecting. Defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach Ted Monachino was fired Sunday, ending his time with the program.
Terrapins Make Change at Defensive Coordinator Positionhttps://t.co/269LMby1wm
Monachino's defense has conceded the eighth-most points (233) in the country this season, including nearly 44 per game during its five-game skid. The Terps gave up at least 40 points in three straight games and allowed Rutgers to score 24 second-half points Saturday.
"I appreciate Ted's hard work and dedication to our program during his time in College Park," head coach Michael Locksley said. "As I evaluate our program, I believe this change is necessary. We wish Ted all the best moving forward."
Maryland, who was tied for the Big Ten lead with 19 interceptions in 2025, has allowed 451.6 yards per game against power conference foes this season. UCLA, Nebraska and then-No. 5 Ohio State each rushed for over 200 yards during their blowout wins over the Terps.

The Cincinnati Bengals hit the bye at 3-2, and if you squint, you can see how this team could've been 5-0 or 1-4. A three-point loss in Pittsburgh.
A five-point loss to Jacksonville after Ja'Marr Chase left with a concussion in the first 18 minutes. Then a 31-24 win in Miami to stop the bleeding.
So who's been the one player this team can't do without? Here are the nominees.
Joe Burrow, QB: 135-of-189 (71.4%), 1,361 yards, 11 touchdowns, three interceptions, and a 104.4 passer rating. That completion percentage leads the NFL. He's done it while losing Colbie Young on the first play in Pittsburgh, Chase early against Jacksonville, and Tee Higgins late in that same game. Four touchdowns in Miami went to Mike Gesicki, Samaje Perine, Tanner Hudson and Chase. That's an MVP spreading the wealth.
Tee Higgins, WR: 27 catches for a team-high 423 yards (15.7 per catch). When Chase was out or limited, Higgins was the guy keeping defenses honest down the field.

The New York Giants lost to the New Orleans Saints, 34-27, on Sunday at MetLife Stadium and dropped to 3-2-1 after a late comeback fell short.
Jameis Winston started and went 14 of 26 for 152 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions before giving way to J.J. McCarthy. McCarthy went 11 of 21 for 243 yards and a touchdown as New York scored 17 points in the fourth quarter but could not erase a 34-10 deficit. Malik Nabers caught 12 passes for 165 yards.
Greg Newsome II (concussion) and Andrew Thomas (concussion evaluation) both exited in the second half.
Jermaine Eluemunor (calf), Colton Hood (concussion), Tyler Nubin (neck), and Theo Johnson (neck) were among the inactives.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer defended his team's effort but not the results after Sunday night's loss to the Packers.
On a night when Dak Prescott threw two interceptions, Schottenheimer pointed the finger at turnovers.
"The effort is right, the fight is right, but mistakes are killing us," Schottenheimer said. "We've got to protect the football."
At 2-4, the Cowboys are not a good team right now, but there are no good teams in the NFC East and the Cowboys are actually the betting favorites to win the division. Schottenheimer thinks there's still a future for his team.
"We're in a hole. We've put ourselves there. There's one way out of it. I told our guys we've got to work, we've got to find solutions, we can't repeat mistakes. And they understand that," Schottenheimer said.

"When they last met" is an ongoing series during the NFL season that recalls the previous game between Washington and the Commanders' next opponent.
San Francisco nearly doubled Washington in yards and time of possession as it easily defeated the Commanders 27-10 on Sunday at Northwest Stadium in Landover.
The 49ers ran the ball down the Commanders' throats all day, totaling 184 rushing yards while Washington managed just 62.
The Commanders' defense offered little resistance to 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, who completed 22 of 28 passes for 230 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. Purdy's two-yard touchdown pass to Deebo Samuel put San Francisco ahead 10-0 in the first quarter. In the final quarter, with over nine minutes remaining, Purdy connected on a 17-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Aiyuk for the game's final score and a 27-10 lead.
Sam Howell connected with Terry McLaurin on a 3-yard touchdown pass with 4:33 remaining in the first half, tying the game at 10-10. However, the 49ers took control, scoring on Jake Moody's 22-yard field goal with 19 seconds left in the half, and the Commanders never threatened again.

The Green Bay Packers' defense hasn't had Micah Parsons on the field this season. However, it found another way to shut the door on Sunday night. The Packers beat the Dallas Cowboys 23-13 at Lambeau Field, holding Dak Prescott to 34-of-54 passing for 258 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
Notably, it was the third straight game Green Bay has held an opponent to 14 points or fewer, a feat that prompted former Packers QB Kurt Benkert to highlight Green Bay's defense on X.
Benkert focused on how the Packers were doing great teamwork on defense.
He wrote that seeing the defense "schematically causing problems for high-powered offenses" has him "really excited for what December and January football can look like for them."
The Packers' defense streak started with a 17-14 win at Tampa Bay on Oct. 4 against Jalon Daniels. Next came a 31-7 win over Chicago and quarterbacks Case Keenum and Tyson Bagent on Oct. 11, when Green Bay forced five turnovers and Xavier McKinney picked off two passes. On Sunday, Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens came to town.

In a way, the Dallas Cowboys' loss to the Buccaneers on Thursday night at home was not quite as bad a loss as what we saw on Sunday in Green Bay, at least from coach brian Schottenheimer's perspective. Sounds absurd, sure, given that the Cowboys lost to a previously winless team that was starting an undrafted rookie, Jalon Daniels, on their home field last week. But there was a chance that could be viewed as a one-off. There was a chance that could be rock bottom, and that the Cowboys could rebuild this season from there. Starting against the Packers at Lambeau Field.
Instead, what we saw on Sunday was confirmation of the worst fears that lingered from the Buccaneers game: That this team and its NFL Super Bowl aspirations had been broken in that loss, that something snapped and might not be able to be repaired. Because, though the defense played better on Sunday–after the first half, at least–the offense appeared beyond repair, a steep three-week drop that has seen Dak Prescott throw four interceptions in two games, after having thrown just four in nine games before that.
Around Cowboys media and fans, the finger of blame is increasingly turning to Schottenheimer, and calls for the team to take action are mounting.
From Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram: "Believe it or not, this roster is good enough. Is it elite? No. Is it great? No. But it should be good enough, and it's nowhere close to even average. The Cowboys are on a train to nowhere, and the blame falls on the coaches leading it."

The Dallas Cowboys dropped a 23-13 road game to the Green Bay Packers which led to coach Brian Schottenheimer talking about what is "killing" his team afterward. Cameras showed Dak Prescott's team walking to the locker room in stunned silence after their dud on prime time TV.
Afterward, Prescott spoke candidly about the defense's performance in a game that wasn't what fans hoped it would be at Lambeau Field, in comments to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News.
"I mean defense to me played a good enough game for us to go out there and win this and we just didn't hold our own on offense," Prescott, who threw two interceptions, said.

The overall performance certainly wasn't perfect, but the Green Bay Packers still rolled to a two-score win over the visiting Dallas Cowboys on "Sunday Night Football" from Lambeau Field in Week 6. Brian Schottenheimer's team was well-rested after playing on Thursday night in Week 5 and not lacking motivation after a humbling home defeat in primetime, but the Packers still raced out to a 17-0 lead and ended up leading the game by two scores for most of the night. Matt LaFleur's team has won three straight games and is 4-2 overall, an acceptable record given the ups and downs of the early season.
Three big things from the Packers' win over the Cowboys:
Facing Dak Prescott, Javonte Williams, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens without Micah Parsons, Edgerrin Cooper and Javon Hargrave provided a big test for Jonathan Gannon's defense, and the group passed it with flying colors. The Cowboys managed only 13 points, of which seven came in garbage time, and Gannon continually had Prescott under pressure and making rushed and confused decisions against the blitz or the pre-snap appearance of a blitz. Prescott averaged only 4.8 yards per attempt, and the Packers got a pair of interceptions inside their own 30-yard line and a pair of fourth down stops on pass attempts in the fourth quarter. More and more, the home opener disaster against the Atlanta Falcons is looking like a blip on the radar. The Packers have allowed fewer than 14 points in three straight games since.
The Packers offensive line took several steps forward in games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears, largely due to the settling of performances at both guard spots. But Sunday night represented a step in the wrong direction and provided evidence that the problems along the offensive line aren't solved quite yet. Jordan Love was under pressure on 45.5 percent of his pass attempts, his highest percentage since Week 1. And the run game accomplished next to nothing, averaging only 2.2 yards per attempt overall and 1.8 yards on runs by Pierre Strong Jr., MarShawn Lloyd and Kaleb Johnson. The Packers got by because Love was excellent under pressure early, and the defense made enough stops so that the struggles moving the ball in the second half didn't matter. The inconsistency of the offensive line, drops in big spots and untimely penalties still look like the Packers' biggest hurdles.
Rookie kicker Trey Smack calmed fears of any prolonged struggles by making all five of his kicks, including all three field goals. Even on a breezy night inside Lambeau Field, Smack enjoyed a bounce-back performance -- even if only one of his five kicks was from over 40 yards (a 44-yard field goal). More importantly, Smack didn't let last week's issues bleed into a new opportunity. Against the Bears, his three misses cost the Packers seven points. On Sunday night, Smack's five converted kicks created 11 points in a 10-point win.

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott completed 34 of 54 passes for 258 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in a Week 6 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Prescott also ran twice for seven yards.
SOURCE: USA TODAY
Why It Matters: Dallas' high-powered offense has sputtered the last two weeks, and Prescott has now gone four straight games with just one touchdown pass. It was also his second straight outing with multiple INTs. As bad as it was, you could argue it should've been worse -- a third interception was wiped away on a dubious roughing-the-passer penalty, and his only TD pass on the night came in the closing minute down 16 points (following another skaky roughing call). A matchup with the sputtering Eagles is on deck. We'll see if Prescott can rebound against a division rival. While he remains a QB1 based on talent, his production has reached a point where you should be looking at your other quarterback's matchups before plugging Prescott in.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — On a night when the Dallas Cowboys' beleaguered defense finally showed signs of life, their star-studded offense let them down.
Dak Prescott threw two interceptions in the Cowboys' 23-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night. The Cowboys were scoreless in a first half for the first time since Nov. 7, 2021, when they trailed 16-0 at the half of a 30-16 loss to the Denver Broncos.
The Cowboys trailed 7-0 and faced second-and-8 from Green Bay's 17 when Prescott took a big hit from Zaire Franklin. On the next play, Evan Williams intercepted Prescott's pass that was intended for CeeDee Lamb.
Dallas trailed 10-0 on its next possession and had first-and-15 from Green Bay's 28 when Lamb fell on a route, enabling Packers rookie Brandon Cisse to make his first career interception.
Prescott went 34 of 54 for 258 yards. His only touchdown pass – a 6-yarder to Ryan Flournoy – came in the final minute of the game.

The Packers have stabilized their offensive front, and their defense is taking significant strides. Now the team is on a bona fide winning streak.
Green Bay controlled the ball and the clock on Sunday night, defeating Dallas, 23-13.
The game didn't feel as close as the final score, as Green Bay took a 17-0 lead into halftime and allowed just one Dallas scoring drive until late in the fourth quarter.
While a second-half possession got aided by penalty and moved the Cowboys all the way down to the Green Bay 14, eventually the Packers still managed to get a turnover on downs when Dak Prescott's pass went high and incomplete out of the end zone.
Prescott ended up throwing 54 times, finishing the night with 258 yards on 34 completions. He a touchdown and two interceptions, both of which led to points in the first half — a field goal and a 1-yard touchdown run by Jordan Love at the end of the second quarter. He would've had at least one more had it not been negated by a roughing the passer penalty.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen completed 23 of 33 passes for 255 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 6 against the Las Vegas Raiders, while adding five runs for one yard.
He tied former quarterback Jim Kelly for the most passing touchdowns in team history with 258, including the postseason.

Why it Matters: Allen failed to score a rushing touchdown in Sunday's game, which is about the only thing that went wrong. Allen continues to provide fantasy managers with outstanding stat lines. He remains a strong QB1 across the board.

Packers' Evan Williams denies Cowboys TD with huge Dak Prescott INT appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Green Bay Packers got on the board first in their much-hyped Week 6 clash against the Dallas Cowboys. Jordan Love connected with Matthew Golden for a nine-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
The Cowboys looked poised to answer as they got an interception from inside Packers territory on their next possession. They thought they had scored a pick six, but it was overturned. The Packers then hit back immediately as Evan Williams picked off Dak Prescott on the very next possession.
Williams likely saved a touchdown or at least a field goal with his interception as the Cowboys were already in the red zone. Prescott's pass was intended for CeeDee Lamb, but the Cowboys wideout likely wouldn't have gotten to the ball as it seemed to be thrown behind him. The resulting Packers possession resulted in a field goal after a marathon 15-play drive that lasted over eight minutes.
The Packers defense has been on quite a roll with the interceptions this season. Heading into Week 6, they were tied for the lead league with seven interceptions. And with their pick of Prescott, they have now recorded an INT in five of their first six games. Curiously, the only quarterback they failed to pick off was the Jets' Geno Smith.

Deshaun Watson played poor football for all four quarters on Sunday, playing a key part in a 34-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was out of rhythm with his playmakers, lacked confidence in his throws, and made a handful of reckless decisions. However, if you asked Watson, it's just par for the course in being an NFL quarterback.
While speaking to the media after Sunday's loss, Watson downplayed his struggles, chalking it up to routine bad plays:
"Bad plays are going to happen all the time. Look all around the league, everyone throws interceptions, everyone makes bad plays. You got to give the defense credit."
It's getting to be beyond noticeable: Watson's lack of self-awareness. Instead of owning up to his mistakes- poor reads, bad timing, and irresponsible decision-making- he says that bad plays are going to happen? It leaves you wondering how long he can keep up this blatant disrespect, and how long he will keep the job in the first place.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons' opening loss at Pittsburgh only added more uncertainty to the quarterback question that has persisted since the start of training camp.
Cooper Rush's performance in the Falcons' 20-13 loss to the Steelers on Sunday had some fans wondering why undrafted rookie Jack Strand wasn't given an opportunity and more fans asking when Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa will be ready to play. Rush threw two interceptions, including T.J. Watt's pick-6 in the fourth quarter. He completed 12 of 22 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown.
Rush was named the starter on Friday after Tagovailoa was ruled out with an oblique injury. Rush started despite having back spasms on Saturday. Coach Kevin Stefanski said Rush was close to full health, but the conservative game plan with an emphasis on short passes placed too much of a burden on running back Bijan Robinson.
Stefanski said Monday he had no update on Tagovailoa or on Penix, who did not play in the preseason as he continues his recovery from a torn ligament in his left knee that ended his 2025 season. Penix was cleared for full team drills late in training camp.
Both Tagovailoa and Penix were inactive against the Steelers, and it is not known if either will return for next Sunday's home opener against Carolina.

The John Harbaugh era got off to a rousing start last night with the New York Giants defeating the division rival Dallas Cowboys 28-20 at a raucous MetLife Stadium. (When was the last time "raucous" and "MetLife" appeared in the same sentence about a Giants game?) Let's see what the **** ysts at Pro Football Focus thought of the individual player performances.
Focusing first on the passing, Jaxson Dart's 23 of 29, 230-yard, 3 TD, 0 INT performance was given a grade of…65.8, smack in the middle of their "average" range. I'm sure fans will take Dart's highly efficient game, as evidenced by his excellent 134.2 NFL passer rating last night, every week. PFF, though, grades on degree of difficulty and taking care of the ball. Dart didn't have any interceptions, but in PFF's eyes he had two turnover-worthy plays, which they see as being just as bad. He also did not have any "big-time," throws, i.e., **** placed accurately into tight windows and especially those that go deep downfield for explosive plays. Dart only threw three **** beyond 20 yards and only completed one. To quote Seinfeld, "Not that there's anything wrong with that," but that's what PFF values. Dart did what he had to do to win the game. In the long run, he'll have to show that he can hurt opposing defenses deep on a consistent basis, but for one game the short-range passing game was just fine.
Let's look at the effect of pressure:
Dart was an amazing 19 of 22 when kept clean, including all three of his TD passes. When pressured he was 4 of 7 for 57 yards, but both of his TWPs came under pressure.
Moving on to the pass blocking:

The Kentucky Wildcats seemed very likely to cover the spread as they took a 17-13 lead into the break against the Alabama Crimson Tide in Week 2 action. The second half didn't bode well for the Cats, or those who put a few bucks on them to cover the double-digit spread. Kentucky was outscored 18-0 in the third quarter and then 14-0 in the fourth quarter. The final score was 45-17 Alabama.
Despite the final total, the Cats should've still held their head high, having limited Keelon Russell to 188 yards and one touchdown and forcing him into two interceptions. Kentucky defensive tackle Tavion Gadson had one of the best games of his career as well. Ultimately, the Cats failed to cover as they closed as an 8.5-point home underdog, with the Over (46.5) cashing as well. They did cover in their Week 1 45-13 throttling of Youngstown State.
Now, the spread is live for the Cats' Week 3 foe, as they take the trip to College Station to face the top-ten Texas A&M Aggies. Kentucky has opened as a 14.5-point underdog, which could be seen as a surprise given how Week 2 concluded. Here are the opening spreads for all the SEC games this upcoming weekend.
The Aggies crushed Missouri State 50-0 in Week 1 and then edged Arizona State 48-20 in Week 2, forcing former Kentucky starting quarterback Cutter Boley into two interceptions. Boley ended with 254 yards and 2 touchdowns.
For Kentucky, slowing down Aggies' quarterback Marcel Reed is going to be a challenge, as will be covering the spread. The Aggies come into this one 2-0 against the spread (ATS), having closed as a favorite of at each two touchdowns in each contest.

No. 8 LSU beat Louisiana Tech 45-14 on Sept. 12, but the Tigers led just 10-7 at halftime. LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt threw three interceptions in the game a week after the 51-10 rout of Clemson.
LSU coach Lane Kiffin said because the No. 8 Tigers (2-0) face No. 11 Ole Miss (2-0) on the road next on Sept. 19 (6:30 p.m., ABC), it might not have been such a bad thing that they struggled some vs Louisiana Tech.
"It was good because of that," Kiffin said of facing Ole Miss next. "We're getting ready to go on the road in the SEC vs a really good team that has played really well for years at that place.
"It was good because it's hard to get their (LSU's) attention after last week ... I'm glad it happened."
Ole Miss coach Pete Golding and the Rebels will go up against Kiffin less than one year after Kiffin left before the College Football Playoff.

ATLANTA − Tennessee football quarterback Faizon Brandon faced some adversity while playing on the road for the first time in his very young college career.
Furman offered little resistance in his first career start but Brandon was challenged in Week 2 at Georgia Tech. His first road start didn't look pretty in the final box score but it was more than enough to get the No. 18 Vols (2-0) to a 45-24 win over the Yellow Jackets (0-2) on Sept. 12 at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
"The stat sheet's not going to be elite. I actually really like how he played the game," UT coach Josh Heupel said. "I thought he was composed, he handled himself in situational football pretty well. First game on the road, 18 years old, handled himself well."

Tennessee football's pass defense distinguished itself with crucial first-half interceptions, and its running game too often was too much for Georgia Tech on Sept. 12 at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta.
That combination proved decisive as the No. 18 Vols improved to 2-0 with a 45-24 victory over upset-minded Georgia Tech (0-2). But that one-two punch wasn't enough to produce a runaway comparable to the Vols' 56-9 victory over Furman in the season opener.
If you were familiar with Georgia Tech's history under fourth-year coach Brent Key, you might have thought the Vols were catching the Yellow Jackets at the wrong time. His teams have been at their best as underdogs and have upended at least one nationally ranked opponent in each of the past four seasons.
Georgia Tech showed its resolve just when the Vols seemed blowout bound after taking a 31-10 lead early in the third quarter.
The Yellow Jackets sprung to life behind the passing of quarterback Alberto Mendoza, who led them 75 yards for a touchdown and had them on the brink of another score when UT defensive back Dejuan Lane broke up a fourth-down pass in the end zone.

ATLANTA — Freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon had an understated but effective performance in his first Tennessee road game, beating Georgia Tech 45-24 on Sept. 12.
Brandon tossed two touchdown passes, avoided catastrophic mistakes, leaned on a ground game that rushed for almost 300 yards and let his defense make game-changing plays. That was enough for the 18th-ranked Vols (2-0) to hold off the Yellow Jackets (0-2).
Tennessee plays Kennesaw State on Sept. 19 (7:45 p.m. ET, SEC Network) at Neyland Stadium.
Here's a quick rundown of Brandon's performance against Georgia Tech for the first road win of his young career.
Brandon was 10-of-21 passing for 148 yards, two TDs and no interceptions against Georgia Tech. And he also rushed for 22 yards.

Quarterback Jayden Maiava and the USC Trojans host the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns at the LA Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, Sept. 12.
The Trojans will have a chance to improve to 3-0 while Louisiana is looking to secure back-to-back wins to start the season.
It will be the final nonconference game for the Trojans before starting their Big Ten Conference schedule, with a game on the road against Rutgers next week.
Maiava is back for his fourth season of college football, his third with the Trojans. He's already completed 48-of-54 pass attempts for 635 yards and five touchdowns. He's only been sacked once this season and has yet to throw an interception.
Lunch Winfield saw the most time at quarterback for Louisiana in the blowout win over the Lamar Cardinals last week. Winfield completed 16 of 22 passes for 189 yards and two interceptions. Sep. 12—The Washington State offense couldn't get out of its own way and the Cougar defense was ultimately powerless to slow Kansas State's march as the Wildcats rolled to a 34-7 nonconference football victory Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kan.
After going 0-for-11 on third down during the Apple Cup, the Cougars' opening script was encouraging.
Quarterback Caden Pinnick rocketed the rock to junior wide receiver Branden Ganashamoorthy and sophomore running back Maxwell Woods for a pair of first downs on WSU's opening drive, but it would be for naught as Cougar kicker Jack Stevens missed his third field goal of the season — matching the total number of misses from last year.
K-State completely snuffed out the Cougs after that, forcing a turnover on downs, nine punts and a forced fumble over the remainder of the game.
The lone bright spot for Wazzu on Saturday were the heroics of WSU safety Jaylen Thomas, who registered the first two interceptions of his college career.
