Uefa has banned Fenerbahce midfielder Matteo Guendouzi for his team's opening two Champions League fixtures following a series of provocations and insults during a chaotic play-off victory away at Lyon last month.
The 27-year-old, previously a player for Lyon's major rivals Marseille, found himself at the centre of unrest before and after Fenerbahce's 2-1 win on 26 August, which included a mass brawl.
The victory secured the Turkish side a place in the Champions League for the first time in 18 years. Guendouzi, who previously made 82 appearances for ****** nal between 2018 and 2020, is set to sit out Fenerbahce's home encounter against Roma next Thursday alongside their trip to Aston Villa on 14 October.
He will be available for Fenerbahce's final six games in the league phase of the Champions League, starting with his side's match against Slavia Prague on 20 October.
Disciplinary verdicts released late on Friday detailed charges against Guendouzi for violating decent conduct rules, "insulting players or others present at the match" and provoking spectators.

ISTANBUL (AP) — Mattéo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood have been charged by UEFA over alleged provocations of Lyon fans at a Champions League qualifying playoff, their club Fenerbahce said Thursday.
Both players have played for Lyon's French rival Marseille and were seen making offensive gestures last week. Fenerbahce won 2-1 in the second leg at Lyon to advance to the Champions League main phase for the first time in 18 years.
Guendouzi raised his middle finger to Lyon fans during the warmup and after the game and shouted "Allez l'OM" ("Go Marseille"), also grabbing his crotch, in wild post-match scenes. He said Lyon fans insulted his family before and during the game.
It was unclear if UEFA's disciplinary judges will sanction the players before Fenerbahce opens the Champions League main phase next Thursday, hosting Roma. Fenerbahce's second game is at Aston Villa on Oct. 14.
Fenerbahce did not specify the charges against Guendouzi and Greenwood though it said it will "protect the rights and interests" of them and the club.

LAS VEGAS—All eyes were on the UNLV Rebels, who came out the other side of conference realignment in a position of menace for a College Football Playoff spot.
With the Mountain West no longer loaded with the traditional boogeymen for the Rebels such as Boise State, UNLV has an opportunity to make a statement of their own. With another high-profile transfer at quarterback in Jackson Arnold and a defense hoping for improvement in defensive coordinator Paul Guenther's second year, the Rebels clearly have such designs in mind for themselves.
However, to be the best in the new Group of Six with the addition of the revived Pac-12, the Rebels will need to beat the best the other conferences have to offer, and they got a tremendous opportunity to do exactly that against the Memphis Tigers.

It turns out San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey's injury was much ado about nothing. Instead, his prolonged absence was part of a plan.
McCaffrey missed the last couple of weeks and both preseason games with what the team labeled as "tightness." The vagueness and unwillingness to specify where the running back was having an issue led to some consternation that perhaps the problem was bigger than the team was letting on.
It turns out is was not a problem at all.
ESPN's Nick Wagoner on Sunday asked McCaffrey about the All-Pro's absence after McCaffrey returned to practice. McCaffrey said this was all part of the plan going into camp.
"Obviously when you don't practice, the way the media works now it's a firestorm," McCaffrey said via Wagoner. "But this was kind of part of the plan from the jump was to ramp up pretty big, get nine, 10 practices in, kind of come back down and then ramp back up so we're fresh for the duration. Our staff's done a great job of coming up with specific plans. And again, I feel great. I feel fresh, and it's good to be back out there."

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was in a car accident this summer that left him hospitalized. The incident became a major news story not just because it happened, but because of how it was covered.
While the initial accident took place on July 14, it wasn't reported on until more than a week later. Given the extent of the injuries Shanahan suffered — Chris Simms said there was a chance the coach would lose his right eye in addition to the concussion, broken hand, broken nose, three broken ribs and the 40 stitches in his face — the fact that the story was kept quiet for so long was shocking.
The response drew criticism of ESPN, with Dan Patrick arguing, "This isn't journalism," regarding how ESPN was treating the story, and Dan Le Batard noting that the vagueness surrounding the situation only lent itself to more conspiratorial thinking. It was, simply, a mess.
On Saturday, Shanahan spoke with reporters and offered more details and perspective on the accident, explaining that he was using the autopilot feature in his car and had been looking for his phone when the collision occurred.
"I think everyone's done, to a degree, what I've done — dropping a phone, falling all the way to my back seat to where I fully have to take my eyes off the road," Shanahan said. "That's something that I normally wouldn't do. I've had autopilot for nine years, so I'm pretty comfortable with it. Who knows what happened when I turned around, whether it malfunctioned or whether I knocked it off; that's something that I don't know yet. But regardless, it's always your fault, whether you're on autopilot or not. You can't take your eyes off the road. It's a partnership driving; you don't just turn it over to a computer."

Life comes at you fast in Formula 1, and no team is feeling the whiplash of the 2026 regulations quite like McLaren. Just months after celebrating Lando Norris's maiden World Championship victory, the papaya garage has found itself completely on the back foot.
As McLaren desperately tries to claw back performance against the likes of Mercedes and Ferrari, the paddock rumor mill is already spinning. According to former Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner, if McLaren cannot fix their underlying issues, their star driver won't hesitate to trigger an exit strategy.
But to understand why Norris might be looking for the door, you have to look at the massive technical overhaul introduced for the 2026 season.
The new regulations fundamentally changed how F1 cars generate power, removing the complex MGU-H and demanding a 50:50 power delivery split between the internal combustion engine and the electric MGU-K. This aggressive shift to electrification has heavily favored factory works teams.

Crystal Palace are reported to have made Stade Brestois 29's Raphaël Le Guen (19) one of their targets for the summer transfer window, according to the BBC.
At just 19 years of age, the Breton defender is seen as a potential successor to Maxence Lacroix (26), whose future looks set to be with Chelsea, where he is expected to sign a contract in the coming hours.
A product of the Brest youth academy, Le Guen made his professional debut last August, coming on as a substitute during his side's 3-1 defeat away to RC Lens. Selected again against AJ Auxerre (a 3-0 defeat) in March, the defender finally earned his first start against Paris FC (a 4-0 defeat) on matchday 32.
He put in a convincing performance and went on to finish the season as a regular starter, notably starting the matches against Paris Saint-Germain and RC Strasbourg-Alsace.
Under contract with Les Pirates until 2029, Le Guen could therefore soon make the leap to the Premier League, where he would have the opportunity to play under his compatriot Pierre Sage.

Former Haas Formula 1 team principal Guenther Steiner believes Esteban Ocon is likely in his final year with the American outfit, predicting a Ferrari junior will be drafted in to replace the Frenchman in 2027.
Steiner offered a blunt ****** sment of Ocon's current campaign at Haas during an appearance on The Red Flags Podcast ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix. The 29-year-old has been consistently outperformed by his team-mate Oliver Bearman, who is in his second season in the championship, sparking speculation about Ocon's future with Haas.
"I think Ollie is doing a very good job, and Esteban is just like, that’s the max we can do," Steiner said. "The difference is so big. I think it’s the biggest difference between team-mates now in the championship. Especially in qualifying.
"If you also take the time gap between the two, it's always huge. So I don’t think he has got a future there. I think that’s his last year there."
With Ocon's future under scrutiny, attention has inevitably turned to who might fill the potentially vacant seat. Several candidates have been floated, including McLaren reserve driver Leonardo Fornaroli and Formula 2 driver Rafael Camara, as well as Yuki Tsunoda.

Between the NBA Summer League and free agency, the NBA offseason has been nothing short of hectic. Multiple superstars have switched teams, with some being traded while others chose new destinations in free agency. The offseason isn’t over just yet, with a few notable players still left to decide where they’ll sign.
Every NBA team’s roster and/or front office changed in some way this offseason, though some far more than others. For the most part, rosters are nearly finalized, so here’s each team’s offseason grade.

Atlanta Hawks: B+
The Hawks’ roster didn’t change much this offseason. They acquired both Aaron Wiggins and Luguentz Dort from the Thunder, giving them an elite defensive backcourt and a young, promising guard.

The Celtics undoubtedly got worse this offseason, losing Jaylen Brown and essentially replacing him with an aging Paul George. They finally found a reliable center by bringing in Mitchell Robinson, but he’s not much better than Nikola Vučević.

Whenever a player who could've helped the Los Angeles Lakers ends up with another team, some fans simply ******* ume that the Lakers didn't go after him. But the team has been aggressive this summer in remodeling its roster after LeBron James left, and that aggression extends to players it struck out on.
On Sunday, Luguentz Dort, who was a key starter for the Oklahoma City Thunder over the last several years, was sent to the Atlanta Hawks in a three-team trade. Before that trade went down, the Lakers were reportedly one team that had interest in him, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
"Several teams expressed trade interest in acquiring Dort before he was traded to Atlanta, including the Los Angeles Lakers, Brooklyn Nets, Toronto Raptors, and Miami Heat, league sources told HoopsHype."
Los Angeles has lacked defensive-minded wings, especially those who can also hit open 3-pointers, for a number of years. While Dort shot just 38.5% from the field and 34.4% from 3-point range last season, he could've served as a nice piece for L.A.
About a month ago, NBA insider Jake Fischer wrote that the team had called the Thunder about Dort. Instead, it eventually added two-way wing Quentin Grimes and forwards Ziaire Williams and Matisse Thybulle in free agency. It is also hoping that 6-foot-5 rookie guard Cameron Carr will make it into its rotation and display some legitimate two-way ability.

Guenther Steiner has urged the FIA to introduce permanent, full-time stewards and increase the use of artificial intelligence to prevent a repeat of the anticlimactic end to the British Grand Prix.
The race at Silverstone, which saw Ferrari's Charles Leclerc claim his first victory of the season ahead of Mercedes' George Russell and his own team-mate Lewis Hamilton, ended behind the safety car.
The safety car was deployed on lap 48 of 52 when Red Bull's Max Verstappen spun out and became beached in the gravel at Stowe corner. While it initially seemed as though racing would resume before the end of the race, with the notice that the safety car would come in being shown on the broadcasts, the race finished under safety car conditions.
The FIA later confirmed that the message had been shown in error and explained that there were not enough laps left to complete the unlapping process, which is why the safety car stayed out.
During an appearance on The Red Flags Podcast, Steiner did not hold back in his **** sment of the situation.

Fast forward forty years, and Belgium and Spain will once again meet in a World Cup quarter-final. Rather than Mexico, this game will be played further north, in Los Angeles. Belgium will be hoping to channel the spirit of 1986 as they look to overcome a Spain side that remain one of the contenders for the World Cup.
Back in 1986, under Guy Thys, Belgium had not a golden generation, but an underrated generation. Some of the greatest players in the history of the country starred in that team, such as Enzo Scifo, Jean-Marie Pfaff and Jan Ceulemans. Like in 2026, Belgium had been involved in a dramatic game already in the knock out stages. Rather than the Round of 32, in the Round of 16 Belgium had faced the Soviet Union in León. Twice the Soviet's took the lead, only for Scifo and Ceulemans to equalise. The goals continued to flow in extra-time, but thankfully for Belgium they scored twice while the Soviets could only muster one. That 4-3 victory saw them into the quarter-finals for the first time in their history.
Like in 2026, Spain now stood in their way. Unlike Belgium, Spain had made easy work of their previous game. Coming up gainst Denmark, the side went 1-0 down on the half-hour mark thanks to a Jesper Olsen penalty, only for Emilio Butragueno to score four, with Andoni Goikoetxea adding another to make it 5-1. Unlike Belgium, Spain had reached the quarter-finals before, in 1934 and in 1950 when they finished fourth.
In Peubla , it was Ceulemans who, just after the half hour mark, had given the Red Devils the lead. This came after a prolonged period of Spanish pressure, although they only really created half chances that barely troubled Pfaff. Ceulemans, Belgium's captain was a prolific goal scorer during his Club Brugge career, scoring just shy of 200 goals in over 400 games. It was a wonderful cross from Franky Vercauteren, and Ceulemans ghosted in between the Spanish defence to finish well.

INDIANAPOLIS -- NBA free agency officially opens at 6 p.m. on Tuesday with the flipping over of the league calendar which formally allows teams to begin negotiating with free agents who are not their own. Players can't formally sign until July 6 so this is sometimes considered a "legal tampering period" but there will be news about players agreeing to change teams starting not long after the clock hits 6 p.m. in the Eastern time zone.
That being said, teams have been able to negotiate with their own free agents since the day after the NBA Finals and in the same stretch teams have been able to engage with other on trades so some of the biggest personnel stories of the summer have already come to pass. Former MVP James Harden declined his player option but is apparently working on a multi-year deal with Cleveland. Golden State's Draymond Green declined his player option, but the point of that was apparently to open up room under the first luxury tax apron to allow the Warriors to try to make plays for the Lakers' LeBron James and the Wizards' Anthony Davis to try to pair the two Olympians with Green and Stephen Curry. Atlanta's Jonathan **** inga had his club option declined as did the Clippers' Bogdan Bogdanovic and Nicolas Batum and Oklahoma City's Kenrich Williams. The Clippers' Bradley Beal and the Lakers' Marcus Smart both declined player options to opt for free agency.
The Pacers for their part have been fairly quiet and there isn't much smoke going around about their potential involvement in any player movement. They picked up the $2.8 million club option for Micah Potter, which gives them the bird-in-hand advantage of having three centers under contract heading into free agency. However, his contract is not fully guaranteed until July 10, so they can continue to monitor the free agent market to see if they can find a better center and waive Potter if they do.
