The Blue Jays made several trades ahead of the MLB trade deadline, including trading away Kevin Gausman and acquiring Jose Soriano, among others.
However, while the team traded several players, they also kept George Springer, Max Scherzer, and Shane Bieber, despite all three players having expiring contracts.
Speaking to Blue Jays reporters following the team's deadline moves, Atkins revealed that the reason Springer was not moved at the deadline was that the veteran DH wanted to stay in Toronto.
"It was important for him to be here. We wanted him here as we continue to push forward," Atkins said.

CHICAGO — I've often imagined North Shore pals Chris Getz and Jed Hoyer meeting at the Starbucks in Winnetka to talk trade and maybe delve into some executive-level gossip over a cinnamon dolce latte.
Both of Chicago's top baseball executives were very active at the trade deadline, and made similar moves to bolster their rosters, adding veteran pitchers with postseason cred who are having off years, multiple relievers who can pitch in any situation, and even a spare outfielder who hits from the right side.
Neither made a blockbuster deal like the Los Angeles Dodgers did to acquire Tarik Skubal, but both probably did enough to convince their fan bases they do want to win in 2026 while also protecting most of their top prospects. Most importantly, they both filled their rotation holes, with the Cubs gaining two starters in Clay Holmes and Kevin Gausman, and the Sox getting Luis Castillo. And they did it without subtracting from their tight-knit clubhouses.
"I really feel like we were able to maintain this belief and magic that's going on right now," Getz said Monday on a videoconference call.

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs are poised to acquire pitcher Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor from the New York Mets for touted infield prospect Jefferson Rojas.
It's the latest effort by the busy Cubs to replenish an injury-depleted pitching staff as they attempt to chase down first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central and hang onto the National League's top wild-card spot.
Earlier in the day, Chicago obtained reliever Ryan Zeferjahn from the Los Angeles Angels for two minor leaguers: catcher Moisés Ballesteros and right-hander Mason McGwire — son of retired slugger Mark McGwire. The team also added left-hander Braxton Garrett from the Miami Marlins for a pair of minor leaguers: infielder Jonathon Long and right-hander Jace Beck.
Garrett was optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

From a fantasy baseball perspective, the value of many players shifted over the past two days, which means that managers who react quickly can make substantial roster improvements.
Here are the details that every manager should know.
Tarik Skubal, SP, Dodgers: Although the value of Skubal couldn't go much higher, the needle is pointed up slightly by virtue of his membership on baseball's deepest roster. The Dodgers have outscored the Tigers by 67 runs this season, and the added offensive support could help Skubal secure an extra win or two down the stretch.
Freddy Peralta, SP, Rays: Fantasy managers who stubbornly held onto Peralta through four unproductive months (4.99 ERA, 1.48 WHIP) got the news they wished for when the right-hander was traded to one of the top organizations in terms of handling hurlers. The Rays' front office is well-aware that the right-hander's skills have declined — especially a strikeout rate that is 6.1% lower than last year — and surely has a plan to get him back on track. The guess here is that Peralta will be serviceable — and possibly better than that — over the final two months.
Kevin Gausman, SP, Cubs: Although Gausman is not a winner to the same degree as Peralta, he should enjoy the backing of an elite defensive group, and he will definitely have greater win potential while supported by a top-five offense rather than one that ranks last in runs scored. Of course, the greatest variable for Gausman will be his own effectiveness, as he went 0-7 with a 6.32 ERA over June and July before tossing six innings of one-run ball in his initial August start.

The Boston Red Sox have reportedly pulled off a blockbuster with the Baltimore Orioles to acquire Adley Rutschman, but there is still time for them to make more moves.
Last week, CBS Sports' Julian McWilliams reported that George Springer was interested in joining the Red Sox via trade. However, McWilliams is now reporting that such a deal is unlikely. Springer will be a free agent after the seaosn, so trading him would make sense for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Even though the Blue Jays pulled off a big trade for José Soriano, they are still expected to be sellers. They already traded Kevin Gausman, and Springer is a few months away from free agency as well. He could be on the move, but his fit with the Red Sox never made much sense.
He is a designated hitter, and the Red Sox already have Masataka Yoshida in that spot. When Roman Anthony returns, he could also spend time as the team's designated hitter. Springer is not having a great year either, so trading for him would have been a puzzling move in the first place.

The Chicago Cubs had a clear focus ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline: starting pitching. One day after the team brought in veteran Kevin Gausman, the Cubs traded for Miami Marlins starter Braxton Garrett, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.
Garrett, 28, has spent the majority of the 2026 season in the minors. He has been excellent at Triple-A, with a 2.90 ERA over 77 2/3 innings.
Garrett, a lefty, was a top-100 prospect back in 2017. He eventually reached the majors in 2020 and — after a few middling years — turned in a promising 2022, posting a 3.58 ERA over 17 starts. He came back in 2023 with another strong year, posting a 3.66 ERA over 30 starts.
Injuries wrecked Garrett's 2024 season. He made just seven starts, posting a 5.35 ERA before going down with an elbow issue. He missed all of 2025 after undergoing elbow surgery.
Garrett returned to action in 2026 but — despite performing well in the minors — face-planted in two major-league starts with the Marlins in May. He lasted just 1 1/3 innings in his first start with Miami, giving up five runs. In his next outing, he gave up two runs over three innings.

1:50 PM EST: Perhaps take it with a grain of salt, but Bob Nightengale reports that the expectation is that Tigers starter Casey Mize will be moved before the deadline, and that the Diamondbacks are among the teams interested. Whether the Tigers would go into full sell mode after dealing Tarik Skubal has been a major topic of conversation in the last two days, and so far, they've yet to trade off anyone other than their ace.

In a deft bit of trade deadline buying and selling, the Toronto Blue Jays are acquiring right-hander Jose Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels for three prospects, less than a day after trading franchise stalwart Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs.
A baseball official with direct knowledge of the deal confirmed the Blue Jays are acquiring Soriano. The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because the deal, first reported by ESPN, has not yet been announced.
In snagging the coveted Soriano, who has two years of club control beyond this one, the Blue Jays ensure their championship window remains pried open for the next two seasons. He also provides them a boost should their hopes of contending - they enter play Monday, Aug. 3 4 1/2 games out of a wild card spot - greatly appreciate in the season's final two months.
The cost was not insignificant: Top 100 shortstop prospect Arjun Nimmala, outfielder Eddie Michelletti and right-hander Angel Rivero. It also signals the Angels are strongly pivoting to selling under new GM John Mozeliak.

The Jays have picked up 27-year-old José Soriano from the Angels.
José Soriano is a very good pitcher, and much younger than Kevin Gausman. He has a 3.29 ERA in 22 starts this year, with a 2.7 bWAR. Batters are hitting .217/.311/.321 against him. He's a ground ball pitcher, but has 127 strikeouts in 123 innings. He's also leading the league with 57 walks.
And he's under team control through the 2028 season.
It gives the Jays another top of the rotation starter to go with Dylan Cease (and Trey Yesavage) for the next couple of years at least.

The Toronto Blue Jays traded starting pitcher Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs last night for minor leaguers Brett Bateman and Ty Southisene. This morning, it is being announced that the Jays are acquiring starting pitcher Jose Soriano from the Anaheim Angels for minor leaguers Arjun Nimmala, Eddie Mitcheletti and Angel Rivero.
So we have got some of the rare buy-and-sell action from the Jays. At 4.5 games back of Wild Card 3 and 13.5 games back in the American League East, it makes sense that the Jays would deal Gausman, a 35 year old in the final year of a 5 year, $110 million deal. Gausman's 4.38 ERA in 2026 is the first 4+ ERA he's had in his time with the Jays, though his FIP of 3.51 and xERA of 3.95 are in line with what he put up last year, when he had a 3.59 ERA, 3.73 xERA and 3.41 FIP. Gausman was a stalwart in the Jays' playoff run in 2025, allowing ten runs in five starts and a relief appearance covering 30.2 innings in the 2025 postseason, and gives the Cubs a veteran arm to help them down the stretch and that can bolster their playoff rotation.
The return for Gausman is not as impressive as I would have expected. Southisene is #10 on the Baseball America Cubs top 30 list, and Bateman isn't on their top 30. Southisene is a 21 year old middle infielder who was a fourth round pick in 2024 and is slashing .306/.425/.372 between low-A and high-A this season. Bateman was an 8th round pick in 2023 out of the University of Minnesota, and has slashed .312/.430/.421 at AAA this season while playing primarily center field.
Having parted with a starting pitcher who was slated to be a free agent at the end of the season, the Jays are apparently replacing him with a starting pitcher who is under team control through 2028. Soriano, 27, is a righthander who had a dominating start to the season, allowing just one run in his first six starts. For the season he has a 3.29 ERA and 3.79 FIP in 123 innings over 22 starts. He's making just $2.9 million this season, and is likely looking at somewhere in the neighborhood of $6 million for 2027.
Soriano was reportedly generating a lot of interest, and the Angels were thought likely to deal him, though the expectation was that it would be a contender acquiring Soriano. Instead, the Jays were the top bidder, and while they are unlikely to be in the playoff mix this year, they do have someone they can pencil into their rotation for the following two years.

Turns out, the team's decision is less a tear down, and more a re-tooling, especially after it acquired starter José Soriano in a deal with the Los Angels Angels on Monday.
Soriano, 27, has a 3.29 ERA over 123 innings. In exchange for Soriano, the Blue Jays gave up shortstop prospect Arjun Nimmala, outfielder Eddie MIcheletti Jr. and pitcher Angel Rivero.
While the decision to acquire a major-league caliber pitcher a day after shipping another one out might seem confusing on the surface, there are a few factors that make it a reasonable exchange for the Blue Jays.
Gausman — while an incredibly important part of the franchise's resurgence — is old, declining and in the final year of his contract. He has his highest ERA since the 2019 season and may not have been in the Blue Jays' plans beyond 2026.
Soriano, on the other hand, is still very much in his prime and showed signs of growth earlier in the season. In 42 2/3 innings in April, he had a minuscule 0.84 ERA. That figure ballooned in both May and June, when he posted a 5.34 ERA over those two months, before Soriano settled back down in July to a far better 2.74 ERA.

Gausman, 35, gives the Cubs a proven big-league starter, even amid a slightly down year in Toronto. In 23 starts this season, Gausman owns a 4.38 ERA and 102 ERA+ over 127 1/3 innings. He's in the final year of the five-year, $110 million deal he signed with the Blue Jays. In his last start with the Blue Jays on Saturday, Gausman held the St. Louis Cardinals to one run on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

There might not be a team in baseball that has been hit as hard by injury as the Chicago Cubs this year. And most of that has come in their starting rotation. Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman is heading to the Cubs, a source confirmed to the Tribune, in exchange for two minor leaguers, outfielder Brett Bateman and infielder Ty Southisene.
Gausman, 35, gives the Cubs a proven big-league starter, even amid a slightly down year in Toronto. In 23 starts this season, Gausman owns a 4.38 ERA and 102 ERA+ over 127 1/3 innings. He's in the final year of the five-year, $110 million deal he signed with the Blue Jays. In his last start with the Blue Jays on Saturday, Gausman held the St. Louis Cardinals to one run on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.
If Gausman pitches on normal rest, he would be lined up to face his former team Thursday in the Blue Jays' makeup game at Wrigley Field. That game was postponed due to weather on June 21.
The Cubs are banking on Gausman's track record as a two-time All-Star with a 3.34 ERA and 124 ERA+ in his previous five seasons. They're also getting a veteran with postseason experience as they look to make a deeper October run. He's pitched in the playoffs in four of the last five years and made six postseason appearances last year for the Blue Jays (10 earned runs in 30 2/3 innings).

The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because the trade wasn't yet official.
Gausman, 35, is 5-10 with a 4.38 ERA in 23 starts this season but has been one of the most consistent starters in baseball for the past half-decade, posting a 3.36 from 2020-2025. A two-time All-Star, Gausman finished third in AL Cy Young voting in 2023.

Per Josh's pre-deadline ranking of Cubs prospects, those are the No. 13 (Ty Southisene) and No. 19 (Brett Bateman) prospects in the Cubs organization. MLB Pipeline ranks them 13th and 21st, respectively.
This is, I believe, a fair deal for a 35-year-old pitcher who is a pending free agent, so this is a rental. The Cubs would be on the hook for slightly more than $7 million of Gausman's $23 million deal for this year. (This might also account for some of the "cash considerations" in the Jameson Taillon deal with the Jays announced earlier today.)
Gausman has a 4.38 ERA and 1.288 WHIP in 23 starts this year and 127.1 innings. His K rate and walk rate are about the same as they've been the last couple of years, and with 50 games remaining, that means likely 10 starts in a Cubs uniform for him.
His last start was Friday against the Cardinals and he allowed nine hits and one run in 5.2 innings. Interestingly enough, his first start for the Cubs could wind up being against his old team, as the Blue Jays will be playing a makeup game Thursday at Wrigley Field — and it's possible his opponent could be Taillon.
