Smith was arrested on July 27 in his native Nebraska on three felony charges of first-degree domestic ****** ault, terroristic threats, and first-degree false imprisonment. He has since pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released after posting a $500,000 bond.

Aug. 31 (UPI) -- The legal team for singer D4vd withdrew from his murder case Monday as he sought the services of a public defender.
The switch came during the arraignment of D4vd, whose birth name is David Burke. He and his former attorneys Blair Berk and Regina Peters informed the court and Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo that he will be using a public defender moving forward.
Walid Fouad Kandeel, Burke's new attorney, was in the gallery before being called forward by the judge to introduce himself to the court. He asked for a continuation of Monday's arraignment so he could better familiarize himself with the case but was denied.
Kandeel said in a statement that his client is "entitled to a defense that takes his circumstances seriously and carefully examines the evidence."
Burke was accused of killing a 14-year-old girl after her remains were found in the trunk of his abandoned car in September. The prosecution alleged that Burke stabbed the girl at his home in Hollywood.

The TikToker (meganinthe.middle) announced the news in a video entitled "I went viral for living with my ex-husband and current husband in the same home… and now I'm divorced again". The woman decided to update new fans on her situation and her account.
"Okay, so for those of you who don't know who I am, I'm the girl that went viral, like, two years ago for living with her ex-husband and her current husband in the same townhome," she said. "This townhome that I'm currently still living in. And now I am since divorced again for the second time. And I thought I would just introduce myself to some of the new friends that we have on the page that are just now joining in and following along. That is where it all started two years ago. At this point more than two months before the midterm elections, Democrats retaking control of Congress and its subpoena power is far from certain. But President Donald Trump is already laying down legal markers for how he'll fight any attempt by lawmakers to investigate him.
In a Justice Department memo and legal filings, the Trump administration is arguing that the president can keep secret not just the conversations he has with his advisers within the White House, but that his dealings with individuals outside the government can be shielded as well. The White House is also saying in court that even disclosing the identities of the people who worked on significant policy efforts would infringe upon the presidential confidentiality to which Trump is entitled. And the administration has taken the stance that it can ignore a Watergate-era law prohibiting the destruction of White House documents.
The posturing comes as Trump, in his second term, has been notably reliant on a constellation of business moguls, non-government attorneys and old friends to help shape his agenda.
"There has been an unprecedented amount of interaction between the Executive Branch — particularly the White House — and the private sector that Congress has made clear is going to be the subject of oversight," said Jamie Bair, a partner and head of congressional investigations at the law firm Crowell & Moring.
Congressional Democrats are already probing the administration's interactions with FIFA, how Trump's ties to the crypto-industry are affecting federal policy, and other examples of Trump family business maneuverings that Democrats say can be tied to government policies.

Actress Blake Lively has been awarded $400,000 (£340,000) of the $8m (£6.9m) she tried to claim from her former co-star Justin Baldoni to cover her legal fees and costs to fight a defamation case he brought.
Lively initially sued Baldoni, her co-star and director of the 2004 film It Ends With Us for ******* ual harassment and retaliation, before he countersued for defamation.
A judge dismissed his defamation complaint in 2025, and she argued she was entitled to $7.5m (£6.4m) to cover her lawyers' fees and $540,000 (£460,000) for other costs.
But the judge said she should receive considerably less - a total of $407,451 - because she requested money for more people and time than were necessary to defend the defamation claim.
She should not have claimed money for other "intertwined" costs to do with the wider legal battle, and took a "blunderbuss approach" to calculating how many hours of lawyers' time she could claim for, the judge said.

"I've stayed quiet for close to a year and tried handling things privately but it just doesn't stop," he wrote. He admitted that he has made mistakes and said he does not expect anyone to forget them. He only wants to work, support causes he cares about and move forward, he added.

There are two ways this is likely to play out: Either, by Dec. 17 (a deciding City Council vote on the lease terms), the City of Portland and Dundon's Trail Blazers will have agreed on a new lease that will keep the beloved franchise in Portland for another two decades; or we will know that Dundon bought the team with the intention of moving it, a script the Pacific Northwest has seen before.
Notice that the Trail Blazers themselves are not on the list of groups contributing to the Moda Center refurbishment — Dundon said at a meeting in Portland he thought the team contributed enough by the taxes it pays in the state. That follows his pattern since buying the team.
Dundon has not made friends in Oregon since buying the Trail Blazers — and absolutely wasted the honeymoon period new owners usually get with fan bases. He has come off as entitled, a billionaire penny-pincher treating the team like a private equity **** et, not acting as a steward of a brand and franchise important to the community.

For a stock that has been rewarded for growth, seeing your share of the output fall in your star ****** et looks like a red flag, suggesting the growth story that powered the stock might be fading.
Management's response was to frame this as an unmitigated victory. The accelerated payback wasn't just due to high oil prices. The CFO pointed to a "2-year acceleration of our investment recovery" driven purely by stellar execution: building facilities at industry-leading cost and running them more reliably than planned. Geno Auriemma says the increasingly heated debate over transgender athletes in the WNBA is focused on an eligibility situation the league is not currently facing.
The UConn women's basketball coach addressed the controversy in an interview with TMZ Sports published Aug. 14, arguing that people are treating a hypothetical eligibility question as though it is already affecting WNBA competition.
"Why are we making a big issue over an issue that doesn't exist?" Auriemma asked. He noted that he was unaware of any transgender women currently playing in the league or an immediate case requiring the WNBA to decide whether a particular player is eligible.
An anti-hate task force of team presidents and general managers met Aug. 12 and discussed transgender athletes along with online abuse directed at players, but the meeting produced no new eligibility rules.
Auriemma acknowledged that people are entitled to different opinions about transgender participation in women's sports. His objection was to the amount of attention being devoted to a question he does not see as an immediate WNBA problem.

Brad Pitt claims that Angelina Jolie is refusing to turn over her movie contracts and financial documents.
In a July 31 filing obtained by USA Today, Pitt is asking a judge to force Jolie to produce records of her income. His team requested information on upfront acting fees, brand sponsorships, and profit participation statements from 2017 to 2021, according to TMZ.
Pitt is challenging Jolie's claims that she put her career on ice after their 2016 split. TMZ points out that Jolie starred in films like Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Marvel's Eternals, and Those Who Wish Me Dead following their split.
USA Today reported that while Jolie turned over records for 2020 and 2021, she refuses to provide documents from 2017 through 2019. Her team argues that Pitt has no right to see this information and is asking for more documents than he is entitled to.

At the outset, it's getting exhausting having to write about these things again, but alas, here we are.
In 1991, feminist journalist Susan Faludi wrote a book entitled Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women, where she contended that when women achieve social, political and cultural progress, a vicious backlash follows, usually manifesting from a sub-section of men who feel genuinely threatened by accomplished women.
This is by no means an unfamiliar phenomenon.
All four waves of feminism that brought major advances (the right to vote, reproductive rights, women ascending to leadership, #MeToo , etc.) were met with a full-throated effort to reverse them, whether through the political processes, acts of violence or online misogyny.
Now, that same dynamic has developed due to the soaring popularity of the WNBA in its 30th season.
