When you're at a modern wedding, it's typically just the bride who wears a white dress. However, when Catherine Middleton, Princess of Wales, married William, Prince of Wales, in 2011, her sister Pippa Middleton also (in)famously wore a white gown. The fit of the dress proved to be one of Pippa's most scandalous outfits. Some thought that the look drew focus from Kate's wedding dress, even with all its details, since Pippa's was an ivory-colored gown. But there's been a long tradition, rooted in superstition, of having the bridesmaid and maid of honor dresses match the bride's dress. It crosses cultures, and it's been in place for centuries. It has to do with preventing the bride from being stolen from her wedding.
"A bride would have attendants to protect her from evil spirits," Dr. Angela Thompson, who teaches sociology at Texas Christian University, told The New York Times. "By having several women who are dressed alike, the spirits, or kidnappers, wouldn't know which person was the bride." She also noted that this was a superstition that you can find in places like Rome and China, dating back thousands of years. So since the bride's dress is white, the bridesmaid dresses should also be white.

As for why royal wedding gowns, and therefore royal bridesmaid dresses, have been white in recent years, it goes back in large part to Queen Victoria's wedding to Prince Albert in 1840. Her white wedding dress — one of the many royal wedding dresses that hid a secret message — also helped popularize the trend for all brides to choose white for their wedding. She donned a white satin, silk, and lace gown with a full skirt. Before that, wealthy women had worn white dresses for their weddings, but colors like red were also popular, and less well-to-do women often wore a brown or black dress that was less likely to show stains so it could be reworn frequently.

After months of withholding support and weeks of back and forth with lawmakers, the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference on Friday publicly backed a bipartisan Senate bill designed to stabilize college athlete compensation and provide antitrust protections to the NCAA and its most powerful conferences.
The final major sticking point for the conferences with the Protect College Sports Act was language in a provision regarding name, image and likeness deals athletes can strike with companies that work directly with schools. The conferences wanted more well-defined restrictions on deals between athletes and so-called ***** ociated entities to cut off the workarounds some schools have been using to blow past the current annual revenue-sharing limit of $20.5 million they can direct to athletes.
With the Big Ten and SEC now on board, the bill has a chance of getting to the Senate floor next week for a vote. Still, there is no guarantee Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) will be able to squeeze it in before Aug. 7, when the Senate breaks for a five-week recess.
The bill needs 60 votes to pass, and where that count stands in the Senate is unclear. Lawmakers are hoping for robust support that easily passes the threshold, believing that gives the bill a better chance of then passing a House vote in the fall. Reforming college sports has been a priority for President Donald Trump, and the White House has also pushed for Congress to act.
The bipartisan bill was introduced in May by Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.). It addresses a wide range of issues in college sports, including antitrust exemptions that would allow the NCAA and member conferences to make rules about athlete eligibility, transfers and NIL compensation, while shielding them from an onslaught of legal challenges.

The Clash is expected to have a new home in 2027. According to The Athletic's Jordan Bianchi, the Clash is expected to return to Daytona International Speedway after a six-year hiatus. After a two-year run at Bowman Gray Stadium, NASCAR will go back to Daytona for its opening exhibition event.
According to Bianchi, the Clash at Daytona is expected to be held on Saturday, February 13, 2027, which is one day before the Super Bowl and a week before the Daytona 500. The NASCAR insider also says a new sponsor is expected to partner with the Clash next season.
NASCAR should run the Clash at Daytona, as there is no better fit for the opening weekend of the season. While Bowman Gray and Los Angeles put on good shows, Daytona is where the Clash belongs. The 2027 NASCAR season isn't here yet, but excitement is already in the air about the possibility.

For three consecutive presidential campaigns, President Donald Trump regularly told the same lie when he spoke in the swing state of Michigan. Before he even entered politics, he claimed, he was named "Man of the Year" in the state.
The problem: CNN and other media outlets repeatedly noted that this award did not exist. But Trump revived the tale once more near the end of a falsehood-filled economic speech in Michigan on Monday — and added an additional lie claiming that an initially skeptical media had eventually discovered the award story was correct.
"I was here 25 years ago, I got Man of the Year. They — oh, by the way, the press questioned that, and then they found out it was true, actually," Trump said with a chuckle. "And I made a speech, and all I talked about was why are you letting them steal your auto industry?"
Nope. This is yet another example of the fake history that has littered various Trump addresses this month.
Approaching 10 full years after Trump debuted the "Man of the Year" lie, ***** ody has ever been able to find any evidence for it. The state of Michigan does not give out a "Man of the Year" award, Trump has never lived in the state, and he and his team have never specified who or what entity supposedly gave him this award and when.

When Kat Friday, a revenue operations employee at financial technology firm Marqeta, first came across Pickle on TikTok in February 2025, she didn't think opening a storefront on the app would ever amount to much.
"I am not into fashion one bit. I wear all black everywhere," Friday tells Fortune. She initially opened the app to scan for a few outfits for an upcoming vacation. But as she scrolled through Pickle's more than 500,000 listings, Friday realized she also could use the platform to rent out an expensive camera sitting on a shelf collecting dust in her apartment.
In November 2025, she listed a Canon G7 X camera, which normally retails for around $1,000, for $150 a week, and waited for a response. The rentals came almost immediately.
"I never use this thing and people are dying for them," Friday says. "I immediately got a bunch of rentals for it, and I was like, 'Okay, I'm gonna list some other stuff.'"
The listing's success inspired Friday to add more items to her Pickle offerings, and she started uploading some shirts and dresses she barely wore. As her storefront grew, Friday even started purchasing "trendy" items in a variety of sizes, what she referred to as "investment pieces" to rent out on Pickle.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters Thursday the Protect College Sports Act is not likely to reach the floor for a vote before the session ends in two weeks.
The bipartisan bill introduced in May by Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) addresses a wide-range of issues in college sports, from eligibility and transfer rules to regulations for compensating players.
The bill, which advanced out of committee last month, has drawn support from the NCAA and many Division I conferences, but not the Big Ten and SEC, the wealthiest and most powerful leagues. Advancing through committee markup is the furthest a college sports bill has made it in Congress; a House bill called the SCORE Act advanced through committee last year but never got to the floor for a vote.
Big Ten and SEC officials have been working with Cruz, Cantwell and other co-sponsors in recent weeks to modify the bill. The two conferences have a variety of issues with the bill, including spending limits it would impose on player compensation and restrictions on conference expansion.
Lawmakers have said there has been some progress on those negotiations, but the bigger issue appears to be the legislative calendar. The senate has only two weeks left in the session before going on summer recess starting Aug. 8.

Mike Evans gives the San Francisco 49ers a legitimate No. 1 receiver for the first time in years, but Sports Illustrated's Conor Orr believes the move addresses two problems that go beyond the receiver room.
The first is Christian McCaffrey's rushing efficiency. San Francisco finished 30th in yards per carry last season — the first time a Kyle Shanahan-called offense has finished outside the top 10 in that stat since 2021. Orr connects that decline directly to how defenses have treated McCaffrey, who saw nearly 30% of his carries against eight-man boxes last year, one of the highest rates in the league.
Evans, Orr argues, should change that math. The 30-year-old drew double coverage on 35% of his routes last season, sixth-most among receivers league-wide. That kind of attention typically pulls a safety out of the box — and Orr believes teams have instead been shifting that extra defender toward stopping McCaffrey.
The idea is straightforward: if Evans forces a safety into coverage, the box in front of McCaffrey gets lighter, and the 49ers' rushing attack — long a staple of Shanahan's offense — gets back to functioning the way it has for most of his tenure.
The second point Orr raises is about time. The 49ers have the second-oldest roster in the NFL with the inclusion of Evans, so Orr suggested the signing means the 49ers think their championship window is closing at the same rate as the Los Angeles Rams', who went all-in this offseason with trades for Myles Garrett and Trent McDuffie.

Then, of course, there are the rules of the game, but the rules that we find most interesting are the fashion ones. For example, players at Wimbledon have to wear all-white outfits (except for women, who can wear dark undershorts beneath their skirts). While there aren't technically guidelines for guests' outfits other than a ban on bold logos and political slogans, it's well-known that you should look pulled together if you're attending a match.
Ah, but there is an exception, and that's for those sitting in the royal box, who need to adhere to the tennis club's rules of dresses or skirts for women and suits and ties for men. NB: Though it's not fashion protocol, there is also a rule that states children aren't allowed in the royal box on centre court. The exception? The royal offspring, naturally, back during the 2025 final, that meant that Prince George and Princess Charlotte sat alongside their parents, Prince William and Princess Catherine of Wales. Folks immediately noticed something interesting about Charlotte's look, though: her nail polish, which didn't seem to carry on one specific royal tradition.

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Tuesday that federal officials have brought the multistate cyclospora outbreak "under control," saying investigators have identified the source of the illnesses and implemented recalls, even as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues investigating the precise source of the contamination.
"We do have the outbreak under control," Kennedy said during a healthcare fraud briefing Tuesday. "We have done extensive forensics, epidemiological forensics and we have identified the source of the outbreak. We, and the companies that are involved, have implemented a recall."
Kennedy's comments came two days after the FDA said an earlier laboratory result indicating a Taylor Farms lettuce sample tested positive for cyclospora should be considered a false positive following an additional laboratory review.
The FDA said it continues investigating the outbreak and collecting product samples. While traceback investigators identified Taylor Farms de Mexico as the supplier of shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell restaurants linked to the outbreak, the agency said no product samples connected to the investigation have produced a confirmed positive result for the parasite.

1622 GMT – The failure of Wainua, a heart disease drug developed by AstraZeneca and Ionis, to meet a primary endpoint in a phase 3 trial is a positive for both BridgeBio Pharma and Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, according to Jefferies **** ysts. For BridgeBio, the news is a potential clearing event for its Attruby drug, an oral stabilizer that addresses the same rare heart disease known as transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy. It’s also a headwind for Alnylam, whose Amvuttra treatment will remain the only gene silencer for ATTR-CM, the **** ysts write, although long-term questions remain for the company’s next-generation silencer. Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla is known for being candid when it comes to answering questions. That did not change in his first public appearance since the trade went down.
Of course, team president Brad Stevens already gave the reasoning behind the trade, which was perfectly understandable based on the team's payroll. However, many people were interested in hearing from the person who actually had to coach him on the court.
Being the Celtics' head coach is not an easy job because they have to meet expectations. Mazzulla has done a great job in the past few years, but the 2025-26 regular season was one of the most impressive campaigns they have had.
With Jayson Tatum missing most of the season due to his ruptured Achilles tendon, Mazzulla had to rely on Brown to be his star player. They worked well together, as they finished the regular season as the second seed despite the low expectations.

Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern today submitted the first portion of information requested by the Surface Transportation Board when it conditionally accepted their revised merger application May 28.
The STB set a deadline of July 27 for the partners to submit the additional data. UP (NYSE: UNP) and NS (NYSE: NSC) earlier said that the data would come in two filings. The start of the formal evaluation and environmental review of the proposed $85 billion merger was delayed pending the new submissions. But, the STB spent months gathering data prior to the railroads' initial merger application in December 2025.
The second filing is expected to cover the enhanced competition aspects of the merger stipulated by the STB.
Tuesday's filing addresses the STB's questions regarding control of local railroads Terminal Railroad ******* ociation of St. Louis (TRRA) and Kansas City Terminal Railway (KCT), and freight car equipment cooperative TTX. TRRA is jointly owned by UP, BNSF (NYSE: BRK-B), CSX (NASDAQ: CSX), CN (NYSE: CNI), and NS, with UP having the largest share. BNSF, UP, NS and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (NYSE: CP) share ownership of KCT.
Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern reiterated in their filing that they do not control TRRA and KCT, which handle interchange traffic between Class I carriers. They offered to divest their stakes in order to preserve that neutrality.

A former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher has seen his time in Major League Baseball come to an end, or at least take a significant pause, after he made just one big-league appearance this season.
In a single outing for the Cincinnati Reds, two-year Phillies reliever Yunior Marte posted a nightmarish 108.00 ERA and was designated for ***** ignment shortly afterward. He briefly joined the Pittsburgh Pirates organization after that, but without a clear path to a major league return, he requested a release and will be looking to bounce back elsewhere.

You've got to hand it to whichever lawyers wrote the NDAs for guests of Taylor Swift's wedding. It's been five days since she took over Madison Square Garden and blocked off a sizable slice of midtown Manhattan for her July 3 nuptials, and no major details have yet emerged about the pop superstar's dress.
But we do know who designed it. Jonathan Anderson got the commission, a major score for a creative director who was brought to Dior a little over a year ago with the task of amping up the brand's global profile. The newly wedded couple must have gotten a bundle deal: Travis Kelce opted for bespoke Christian Dior, too, and both stars wore custom Christian Louboutin shoes.
In her wardrobe and her music, Swift tends to slot herself into a variety of classic feminine roles: the fairy-tale princess, the high school lover girl, America's sweetheart. Before her wedding, fashion writers predicted a slew of designers whose wedding gowns might fit those archetypes. Ralph Lauren, one of whose dresses Swift wore for her enchanted-garden engagement shoot, would have been a solid choice for a "Miss Americana" getting hitched on Independence Day weekend.
