WASHINGTON — The talks to end the Iran war had hit a snag.
Vice President JD Vance had flown to Pakistan for negotiations with the Iranians, a sign that the two sides had narrowed their differences and the White House might be poised to announce a breakthrough.
As the marathon April meeting unfolded, though, U.S. negotiators began to worry: It looked like the Iranians were changing the terms of a potential deal. So, during a pause, they phoned Secretary of State Marco Rubio to get a “steer” on what they should do next, an administration official with direct knowledge of the matter said in an interview.
Rubio agreed that they couldn’t accept Iran’s offer, the official said. There would be no deal.
Rubio isn’t the face of the Iran negotiations. He’s kept a discreet public distance as the unpopular war grinds on. Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and the president’s longtime friend and special envoy Steve Witkoff are the main protagonists in the push to end both the Iran and Russia-Ukraine conflicts.

On August 13, a federal appeals court ruled in favor of Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD), upholding a preliminary injunction that bars the defendants from importing or facilitating the sale of foreign-market Gilead-branded medications in the US. The US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit found that the differences between Gilead's HIV medication for the US market and the foreign versions being imported were "material, not theoretical." The controversy began in December 2024 when Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) filed suit against a number of companies, including third-party administrator Meritain Health, pharmacy benefit manager ProAct, and pharmacies Rx Valet and Advanced Pharmacy, alleging illegal imports of its best-selling HIV drug Biktarvy.
The dispute dates back to December 2024, when Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) sued a group of companies, including third-party administrator Meritain Health, pharmacy benefit manager ProAct, and pharmacies Rx Valet and Advanced Pharmacy, alleging illegal imports of its top-selling HIV drug Biktarvy. The lawsuit arose from a specific instance in which a patient in Maryland received the medicine in the mail from Turkey, with label instructions written in Turkish.
A federal district court in Baltimore ruled in Gilead's favor and ordered a preliminary injunction, determining that the company was likely to succeed on its Lanham Act trademark violation and unfair competition arguments. As the case continued, the injunction was increased to include new sellers like CanaRx, ElectRx, and ScriptSourcing. The defendants filed an appeal with the Fourth Circuit, and the district judge declined to suspend the injunction while the appeal was pending, thus the import restriction has been in effect the entire time. The recent ruling maintains the order rather than overturning it.
In court documents, Rx Valet stated that the Turkish-sourced Biktarvy was chemically identical to the US version, which was offered at a significantly higher price. Meritain, for its part, said that it has never supported getting non-FDA-approved pharmaceuticals from outside the US and denies the claims, despite being named as a defendant.
The Fourth Circuit rejected the defendants' main argument that the imported and domestic versions of Biktarvy are interchangeable. The court's judgment that the two versions differ materially, not just in packaging or labeling, but also in the quality-control protocols that each version goes through before reaching a patient, challenges the basic argument that these alternative funding programs have used to support their business model.

GREEN BAY – It appears all the Green Bay Packers and tight end Tucker Kraft needed was a deadline to close the gap on their differences.
With the season a little more than 24 hours away, Kraft and the Packers agreed to terms on a four-year extension worth $75 million, including a $26.5 million signing bonus, a source confirmed Sept. 12. The deal could go as high as $92 million based on incentives and escalators
Kraft's deal falls just short of the yearly average of San Francisco tight end George Kittle's $19.1 million-a-year deal and does not include the same amount of guaranteed money. But the signing bonus is the highest of any tight end in the NFL.

Pete Davidson marked the 25th anniversary of 9/11 by honoring the father he lost that day. The comedian joined 9/11 Day's UNIITE For Good campaign, turning grief into a call for kindness.
Davidson's father, Scott Davidson, died while responding to the attacks in New York City. This year, Pete encouraged Americans to remember the tragedy by reviving the spirit of unity that followed.
Davidson shared his story in a video for 9/11 Day. "He was a firefighter for Ladder 118, Engine 205 in Brooklyn Heights," he said. "My dad loved being a fireman, and he loved saving people," Davidson added. Scott died while responding to the attacks alongside fellow firefighters.
The Saturday Night Live alum explained why UNIITE For Good felt fitting this year. "9/11 is usually a tough day," Davidson said, according to the campaign. He explained that participants could perform a good deed and pass the idea along. The campaign then added those pledges to a nationwide map.
The goal was to cover the country with visible examples of people helping others. Davidson hoped the initiative could make an emotionally difficult anniversary feel slightly lighter. The campaign also focused on what happened after September 11. Communities came together and helped strangers despite their differences.

Lilly has one huge drug that we know is going to be a franchise for many, many years. I do like a diversifying pattern more. And Pfizer's starting to creep up and is playing catch-up, but I need a reason to recommend it. So I'm going to say J&J and Lilly and then Pfizer.

Second-quarter revenue jumped 48% to $23 billion, while reported EPS increased 26% to $7.94 and non-GAAP EPS rose 33% to $8.38. A versatile and highley rated performer, on paper it seemed to some as if Calvin Palmer's big money move in February 1968 was exactly what Sunderland's struggling squad needed, and yet when he departed two years the later his release felt inevitable – and the man that had brought him was certainly happy to see him go.
Bought by the recently reinstalled Alan Brown, Palmer's issues rarely came down to ability. Although fans felt they never got to see the same all action displays he produced at previous club Stoke City they still recognised his versatility and commitment to winning, particularly during one early appearance when against Stoke he took over from the injured Jimmy Montgomery in goal. It was an example of the type of self-sacrifice Brown would usually appreciate and yet the pair were unable to ever strike up a working relationship, a clash of personalities meaning that the notoriously formidable manager and his unconventional recruit often ***** ed heads.
Palmer would invariably take his football seriously but as a character struggled to acquiesce to Brown's rigid structure and expectations. A squad trip to a cinema the month after signing, during which Palmer decided to leave early, led to Brown disciplining him for a breach of club rules for instance, and once the tone was set a number of other battles followed. By January 1970 Palmer was on the transfer list at his own request, and there was clearly no way back for him.
A court case and subsequent driving ban that month served to emphasise the differences between the player and manager; Palmer had found himself on the wrong side of the law whilst Brown had previously served as a police officer and maintained a strict zero tolerance attitude towards any sort of infringements thereafter. In more modern times it might be sensed that Palmer's nature simply warranted a different approach, but the 'Bomber's' management style never relied on subtlety and in the May he confirmed his decision to cut his losses on the £70,000 fee that had been paid and gave his player a free transfer.
It was presumed that this would be the end of the matter, but Palmer, often accused of being 'outspoken' in those more deferential times, did still intend of having the final word. In August he joined Cape Town City and the following month there was to be a rude awakening for Brown when on this day a national Sunday paper launched a 'warts and all' series detailing from South Africa the views and stories of the now ex Rokerman. Whereas Palmer's seemingly divergent traits would be better understood now it was easy then to tag him as a controversial figure, but even still the new column was quite the exposé, with the account being labelled as an 'explosive' chat with 'football's stormiest rebel'.

The Sussexes' return to the UK has brought attention back to the family tensions. Kay claims the situation cannot stay unresolved forever.
In a Daily Mail Voices video, Richard Kay suggested that Prince William cannot continue avoiding his younger brother forever. The royal commentator believes the family will eventually need to address the estrangement, particularly if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle remain in Britain for an extended period. "At some stage they are going to have to engage, because they can't not engage forever," Kay said.
According to Kay, the first step could involve holding a private family meeting instead of staging a highly public reconciliation. "I would have thought that in the first instance there would need to be a private meeting between Harry and William and presumably Catherine and Meghan, too," Kay said.
He suggested that the meeting could help them agree on an "official line" and end uncertainty about the family's position. However, that would not mean the brothers would immediately repair their personal relationship. Instead, Kay believes they could establish a workable public approach.
Kay also warned that keeping the family separated for months could make things even harder for the Royal Family. "The public won't stand for it," he said. Kay believes William must think beyond his personal relationship with Harry. "William knows that, above all, his responsibility to the monarchy, to the institution, has to take first place, so he'll have to put whatever personal differences he has to one side."

Sep. 2—BEMIDJI — When looking at the singles side of the Bemidji High School tennis courts, the home fans would be forgiven if they thought Wednesday's match against Staples-Motley took place in 2025.
For much of this season, the Lumberjacks' singles lineup has carried over from last fall. Liz Peterson occupies the top spot, while Lilly Caron and Bailey Rupp typically play Nos. 2 and 3 singles, save for their occasional doubles appearances. When Sophia Wootten was two years old, her parents were told that she might never speak clearly.

Wootten was born cleft-affected and with other craniofacial differences and started undergoing surgeries to correct those differences at just four months old. "[My parents were told] I might as well be put in a school for the deaf because that is where I would belong the best at that point," she tells PEOPLE.

At a young age, Wootten started speech therapy. Admittedly, she recalls being a "little bored" with the process. So her parents put her in voice lessons instead.
"Through it all, I fell in love with musical theater. I learned how to tell stories, but not necessarily my own," she says.

A senior member of Pakistan's selection committee has questioned the seriousness of Imam-ul-Haq's calf injury and called for an inquiry after the opener did not bat in either innings during Pakistan's 194-run defeat to England in the second Test at Lord's.

Aaqib Javed, who is part of Pakistan's four-member selection panel, said the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will investigate how Imam was managed after suffering the injury during the match.

"An inquiry will be conducted into this matter," Aaqib Javed told Pakistan's private news channel Geo TV during an interview aired on Tuesday night, as quoted by news agency AP.

Javed questioned how a player could miss both innings because of a muscle injury.

"How is it possible that you failed to come out to bat in both innings after pulling up a muscle?" Javed said.
He added that players have batted through injuries in the past and described Imam's case as a matter of concern.

"Injuries do occur and we have seen instances in the past where players -- even with casts -- have gone out and made an effort. This situation is different. It is a matter of great concern, and action will be taken regarding it."

Imam injured his calf while fielding on the opening day of the Lord's Test and took no further part in the match.

After former chief selector Mohammad Wasim questioned Imam's absence, the opener appeared on the outfield before play on the fourth day. He was seen shadow batting with his left calf heavily strapped but was visibly limping.

Imam was one of seven players recalled from England after Pakistan lost the first two Tests at Headingley and Lord's. Head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul were also sent back by the PCB.

Pakistan have appointed white-ball head coach Mike Hesson and bowling coach Ashley Noffke to take charge of the team for the third Test, which starts in Birmingham on September 9.

The selectors have picked five uncapped players for the final Test, along with openers Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal, who have played a combined 10 Tests.

Javed also addressed reports of differences between the selectors and the team management over the playing XI for the Lord's Test.

According to Javed, he wanted the team to include fast-bowling all-rounder Ubaid Shah, wicketkeeper-batter Ghazi Ghori and another pace option instead of Mohammad Rizwan. Instead, only Salman Ali Agha was dropped after leading Pakistan in the first Test in Babar Azam's absence.

"We can't just keep waiting," Javed said. "I had actually spoken to both the captain and the coach after the first Test, suggesting they include Ubaid, who bowls at 140 kph. Agha was rightly rested, Ghazi Ghori was available on the tour and should have played instead of Rizwan."

Facing a flagging pitcher on a bullpen day, Montes took a studied, disciplined at-bat, getting ahead 2-0, whiffing at a changeup on the plate, and then declining to chase two more changeups to earn his way on base. J.P. Crawford put the Mariners ahead on a sacrifice fly, and then Brock Rodden checked in with an infield hit of his own, hustling down the line to allow Cole Young to score. That also turned the lineup over for Randy Arozarena, who continued his audition to Get Real Paid by the Red Sox next season by crushing a sinker middle-middle that would have wound up on Lansdowne Street if not for an inconveniently located billboard.

JPMorgan remains constructive on equities heading towards the end of the year, although the bank expects further gains to be driven by shifts between market segments rather than a broad-based surge in stocks.
"In equities, we stay constructive into year-end, expecting a grind higher with rotation rather than a broad melt-up move," strategist Fabio Bassi wrote in a note to clients.
The bank pointed to the recovery in semiconductor stocks as evidence of a tactical improvement in risk appetite. With Federal Reserve patience helping to keep volatility contained, JPMorgan expects investor positioning and differences in performance across market segments to shape the next phase of the equity rally.
JPMorgan continues to favour Quality Growth stocks and hyperscalers, while also seeing opportunities in semiconductors following their recent repricing.
The bank said a Goldilocks environment, in which genuine disinflation allows the Fed to remain on hold, could create conditions for equity gains to broaden beyond current market leaders.

The Texas Rangers scored three runs but the Milwaukee Brewers scored five runs.
Remember last night's game? Well tonight's game was pretty much the same game except everyone watched it on FOX instead of no one watching it on BZZR.
Just like last night the Rangers trailed 2-0 after an inning, made no headway with producing run-scoring rallies, hit a solo home run to briefly give the illusion of competitiveness, and then saw a leaky bullpen erase all doubts in the late innings.
The main differences tonight is the Rangers actually had more than two baserunners (out-hitting the Brewers 8 to 7) and showed more fight in the late innings with Brandon Nimmo bringing Texas to within a couple of runs with a two-run home run in the eighth.
Unfortunately also like last night, the Rangers lost. They have now lost four in a row and are four games under .500 for the first time since they were 38-42 back on June 24.
