Stocks soared Wednesday as investors reacted to a clean sweep by Democrats in the midterm election.
Stocks were initially down when results started to roll in Tuesday night, in part due to fears of a data center crackdown, but futures turned green later in the evening, and all three major indexes soared on Wednesday.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
It wasn't immediately clear why stocks jumped on the results, though it appeared to be a combination of several factors. Investors were glad to see pushback on the Trump administration validated, including on inflation and the war in Iran. Investors tend to like a divided government, and with Democrats gaining solid control of both houses of Congress, they clearly have that. Finally, President Trump was surprisingly conciliatory, saying he would "absolutely accept the results of the election," and was willing to work with Democrats, which could pave the way to a productive Congressional term.
Among the winning sectors today was housing, which has languished over the last two years due to high mortgage rates and weak housing turnover. The State Street SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF (NYSEMKT:XHB) closed up 5.4%, reaching its highest point in more than two months, while Home Depot (NYSE:HD) and Lowe's (NYSE:LOW), the two leading home improvement retailers, were up as well. Home Depot finished up 6.5%, and Lowe's jumped 7.5%.

Where does Warren Buffett want most of the money his family receives as an inheritance to be invested? Perhaps surprisingly, it isn't Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA) (NYSE: BRKB). It isn't one of the top holdings in Berkshire's portfolio, either.
Instead, Buffett revealed years ago where he thought the inheritance should be invested. He recommended to his estate's trustee, "Put 10% of the cash in short-term government bonds and 90% in a very low-cost S&P 500 index fund. (I suggest Vanguard's.)"
Missed AI's "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 16x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our ******* ysts, we're only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »
One exchange-traded fund (ETF) satisfies Buffett's criteria to a T -- the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: VOO). Berkshire owned this fund from 2019 through 2024. History shows that regular investors should love the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF as much as Buffett does.
You might find this hard to believe, but investing $200 per month in the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF could grow to $1 million if history is any guide. The math is straightforward.

Generating $1,000 a month in dividends is a simple process but it usually requires a substantial capital outlay. The Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (NYSEMKT: SCHD) is perhaps the best dividend ETF for accomplishing this. Not only does it offer a much-above-average yield, but it's also backed by a portfolio of durable, high-quality companies.
That's exactly what you want in your portfolio, so let's run through the path for how to get there.

The Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF tracks the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index. It starts with a universe of U.S. equities that have paid dividends for at least 10 consecutive years. From there, it examines the stock's dividend growth rate, yield, and several fundamental metrics, including return on equity (ROE) and cash flow-to-debt ratio. The 100 stocks with the best combination of these factors make the cut for the portfolio.
It's the combination of dividend yield and dividend quality that makes this fund so effective. The screens act as cross-checks on each other, so investors can get the best of both worlds. Choosing stocks based solely on yield can leave investors vulnerable to yield traps or potential dividend cuts. The quality screen here helps steer clear of that and gives people a sustainable high yield along with the quality portfolio.

The 10-year Treasury yield recently hit its highest level in 24 years at 5.3%. That high yield has income-seeking investors wondering whether to load up on Treasuries while they're at a historically high level.
Here's a look at how much passive income you can generate over the next 10 years on Treasury bonds compared to another popular income-focused investment: the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (NYSEMKT:SCHD).

It's common for new investors to want to hit home runs in their first at-bats. That situation is arguably amplified at a time when major equity indexes are regularly hitting record highs.
With glamorous, high-octane growth stocks leading the charge, some market participants may be losing sight of the value of the singles-and-doubles approach to dividend investing. Those investors shouldn't ignore history. Though the percentage trended lower over the past decade due to the prominence of low-yield and non-dividend tech darlings, dividends accounted for about a third of the S&P 500's total returns over the past century.

Most investors don't think in 100-year increments, and that's understandable, but when it comes to dividend investing, history and long-term perspectives matter. And the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (NYSEMKT: SCHD) is a prime example of a dividend exchange-traded fund (ETF) with a compelling history for long-term investors.
Locked in a seemingly daily battle with the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF for the ******* le of the largest dividend ETF, the $108 billion Schwab fund has a nearly unmatched track record. Two weeks shy of its 15th birthday, this ETF, which tracks the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index, has returned 532% since its launch.

Under Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway stock returned 19.7% annually between 1965 and 2025, nearly doubling the 10.5% annual return in the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC). That makes Buffett a great source of inspiration, and he consistently recommended an S&P 500 index throughout his career.
"In my view, for most people, the best thing to do is to own the S&P 500 index fund," Buffett said at Berkshire Hathaway's shareholder meeting in 2021. Investors have several options, but Buffett himself selected the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT:VOO) when going head-to-head with a hedge fund in the early 2000s.

For decades, no investment portfolio has been more closely watched by investors than Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE:BRKA)(NYSE:BRKB). Now-retired CEO Warren Buffett always had a knack for spotting amazing deals hiding in plain sight, leading to a greater-than-6,000,000% outperformance of the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) since the mid-1960s.
But investors might not realize that a "secret" Buffett portfolio exists within Berkshire Hathaway. In the June-ended quarter, this $863 million portfolio sent shares of artificial intelligence (AI) superstars Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL)(NASDAQ:GOOG) and Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) packing. Meanwhile, this under-the-radar fund has built up a significant position in two S&P 500 index funds: the State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEMKT:SPY) and the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT:VOO).

The State Street SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: SPYM) isn't too far behind. Each of these ETFs is a strong contender and gives Vanguard's fund a real run for its money.
These funds share much in common. They all seek to track the performance of the S&P 500 index and own the same large-cap stocks. Their returns are, unsurprisingly, nearly identical.

Warren Buffett stepped down from his role as the chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA)(NYSE: BRKB) at the end of 2025. During his 60-year tenure, he grew the company into a $1 trillion conglomerate with multiple wholly owned subsidiaries, a $350 billion stock portfolio, and over $350 billion in cash.
Had an investor purchased $500 worth of Berkshire shares when Buffett took the helm in 1965, thatr person would have been sitting on a whopping $24 million by the time Buffett stepped down. However, Buffett was a full-time professional investor, so he always knew the average person would struggle to replicate his results. That's why he regularly advocated for exchange-traded funds (ETF) that track a diversified index like the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC).
Continue »
In his 2013 annual letter to shareholders (published in February 2014), Buffett specifically recommended the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: VOO) because of its exceptionally low fees. While young investors in their 20s and 30s can afford to take more risks, those in their 40s who want to achieve financial security heading into retirement might want to heed Buffett's advice. Here's why I'd buy the Vanguard ETF if I were in that age group.
The S&P 500 is made up of 500 American companies from 11 different sectors of the economy. It has a very strict entry criteria, requiring its members to maintain a market capitalization of at least $22.7 billion, and they must also generate positive earnings. But even after meeting those conditions, a special committee still has the final say over which companies make the cut.

If you're trying to choose between the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: VOO) and the State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: SPY), it might seem they're essentially interchangeable. They're both huge and track the same index.
At a high level, that's probably true. But if you want to dive deep and get picky, a few factors set them apart.

The State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF has an expense ratio of 0.0945%. The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF charges just 0.03%. Given that the index has historically returned about 10% per year, this fee difference may seem immaterial. But I will take any advantage I can get.
Because of their sizes, trading spreads (the difference between the buying (ask) price and the selling (bid) price of a stock) are virtually nothing, so spreads aren't really a consideration here. But if you can own the exact same index for a third of the cost, why not?

Comparing iShares National Muni Bond ETF (NYSEMKT:MUB) and Vanguard Intermediate-Term Treasury ETF (NASDAQ:VGIT) reveals a choice between tax-advantaged municipal income and the federal credit safety of intermediate-term U.S. government securities.
Both funds serve as core fixed-income holdings. The iShares fund tracks high-quality municipal bonds, which may provide tax benefits for certain investors. The Vanguard fund targets Treasury notes with maturities between three and 10 years, offering a refuge from credit risk during periods of market uncertainty.

Experienced investors know the advantages of buying and holding S&P 500 index funds like the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: VOO) or the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEMKT: SPY). Not only are they super simple, but statistically speaking, you're likely to get better performance from them than you are by picking individual stocks or by owning an actively managed fund.
Nevertheless, given its long-term (and often market-beating) track record, even the most disciplined of investors might have the itch to step into a stake in Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA) (NYSE: BRKB). But is it actually the better buy?

Berkshire Hathaway is a conglomerate consisting of several dozen reliable cash-producing businesses as well as a portfolio of hand-picked stocks. Brought to prominence by Warren Buffett, the company's flexible structure has enabled its shares to consistently outperform the S&P 500 since Buffett first took the helm in 1965.
It hasn't beaten the market every year since then, to be clear. Some years it did. Other years it didn't. It typically achieved the feat in five-year time frames.

On average, investors generally expect the market to provide roughly a 10% return each year. In fact, if you look at the long-term history of the S&P 500 index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC), that's about what you get, ******* uming you reinvest dividends. So what should an investor make of the fact that the first six months of 2026 saw the S&P 500 index advance 9.5% on a price-only basis and nearly 10.2% with dividends reinvested?
The first issue to address regarding market returns is that it includes bull and bear markets. A bull market is when the market goes up 20%, while a bear market is when it falls 20%. Bull and bear markets represent moves much larger than 10% and highlight that the market does not just go up at a steady, comfortable pace. The markets can be, and often are, quite volatile.

To be fair, if you bought and held the S&P 500 index over the long term, you would have seen the value of your portfolio rise dramatically. You can easily buy the index with a low-cost exchange-trade fund like Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: VOO). But you have had to hold on through some pretty trying periods. For example, since the turn of the century, SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: SPY), the oldest ETF tracking this index, is up roughly 400% on a price-only basis, with reinvested dividends bringing the total return up to just over 700%.

Bonds should be an essential part of a well-balanced portfolio. Factual differences between the Schwab Long-Term U.S. Treasury ETF (NYSEMKT:SCHQ) and the State Street SPDR Portfolio Long Term Corporate Bond ETF (NYSEMKT:SPLB) center on credit quality, as the Schwab fund tracks government debt while the State Street fund targets investment-grade corporate bonds.
Investors seeking exposure to long-dated fixed income typically choose between government-backed securities and corporate credit. While both funds focus on maturities exceeding 10 years, they offer significantly different risk-reward profiles based on their underlying debt issuers and the credit risk investors are willing to accept for higher income.

Wall Street pays a huge amount of attention to the price movements of the S&P 500 index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC). If stocks are in a bull market, everyone wants to know when the next bear market will arrive. If there's a bear market, everyone keeps an eye out for the sign that the next bull market has come along. History shows you should ignore Wall Street and focus on a long-term plan of saving and investing, no matter what the market is doing.
World-famous investor and Wall Street icon Warren Buffett has often said that most investors would be better off buying an S&P 500 index fund, such as SPDR S&P 500 Trust (NYSEMKT: SPY) or Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: VOO), than trying to buy individual stocks. The real purpose of this is to create a simple, diversified portfolio that allows the investor to focus their attention on saving money and, frankly, living a happy life.
Missed AI's "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our ****** ysts, we're only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »
That said, a key part of Buffett's investment advice is that you should keep buying the S&P 500 no matter what is happening with the market. That's called dollar-cost averaging. You should also reinvest your dividends, which allows the dividends to compound over time. Both are simple, but powerful wealth-building tools.

Invesco Aerospace & Defense ETF (NYSEMKT:PPA) offers a long track record and broad industrial exposure, while Global X Defense Tech ETF (NYSEMKT:SHLD) provides a lower-cost, technology-focused approach to the defense sector.
Defense spending often stays resilient throughout various economic cycles, making aerospace and defense exchange-traded funds a popular choice for investors seeking sector-specific growth. While both funds target the same broad industry, they differ in their approach to legacy hardware versus emerging technologies and software-defined systems. This comparison looks at how the veteran PPA stacks up against the newer SHLD.

There are plenty of reasons for investors to be nervous about stocks right now. Inflation remains stubbornly high. Treasury yields are climbing. And traders now see a 90% probability that the Federal Reserve raises interest rates at its September meeting this week.
Yet I'm still buying and holding the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (NYSEMKT: VTI).

The reason comes down to one thing. Corporate earnings are proving remarkably resilient and are projected to continue growing at a healthy rate through at least the end of 2027.
Stocks don't necessarily need falling interest rates to move higher. If corporate profits keep growing fast enough, earnings can push stock prices higher over the next six to 12 months.

The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) has risen by 13% thus far in 2026. The broad index is on track for another above-average performance; historically, its annual gains are around just 10%. However, with many stocks continuing to perform well, the index, which tracks the leading companies on U.S. markets, has thrived.
Gold, meanwhile, which investors typically turn to when they're worried about the stock market, has been going in the opposite direction. Its value has been diminishing, a sharp turnaround from earlier in the year, when gold was hitting record levels. The SPDR Gold Shares(NYSEMKT:GLD) fund, which tracks gold, is up only 3% this year.

With a total return of 57% over the last three years, the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (NYSEMKT: SCHD) has been a boon for income-focused investors who value stability and diversification. Those who already own the fund should probably hold on to it for those two reasons.
That said, no investment exists in a vacuum. And potential new investors have a lot of other options to choose from. Let's dig deeper into the pros and cons of SCHD to decide what the next five years might have in store.

According to research from S&P Global, dividends accounted for a whopping 31% of the S&P 500's total return since 1926, making them a vital part of any long-term investment strategy. This might sound surprising considering blue chip stock yields tend to be relatively small. But these payouts benefit from compounding as they are reinvested into more shares that continue growing and paying more dividends.
And while returning cash directly to investors creates more tax exposure than other strategies like stock buybacks, investors can mitigate the impact by using a tax-advantaged account (such as a Roth IRA). Furthermore, the new cash can be invested in different ****** ets to boost portfolio diversification.

The stock market has been so good for so long, that it's making some investors suspicious. The S&P 500 index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) has delivered a total return of 593% in the past 15 years. The tech-heavy Nasdaq-100 index has done even better with a total return of 1,150% during that time.

Can the good times on Wall Street really keep going? What if the artificial intelligence (AI) boom that has powered hundreds of billions of dollars of capital expenditure and investor excitement turns out to be overvalued and overhyped? What if we're overdue for a bear market?
During any given day, month, or year, the stock market can lose value. This is why day trading and short-term speculation can be so risky and unlikely to succeed. But I'm not focused on what happens in the stock market tomorrow or this year.
Any money I invest today is going to be left invested for the next 10 years or more. And as a long-term investor, I believe that no matter what happens next, as a long-term investor, it's a good decision to keep investing in the Vanguard Morningstar Total Stock Market ETF (NYSEMKT: VTI).

Winnie the Pooh probably isn't the investment guru that first comes to mind when you think about Wall Street. And yet he has offered some pretty sage investing advice: "Doing nothing often leads to the very best of something." The history of investing over the past 50 years very clearly shows that this fictional, honey-loving bear could be on to something. Here's why.
Turning to a real person, iconic investor Warren Buffett, the former CEO of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA)(NYSE: BRKB), has said that "Investing is not a game where the guy with the 160 IQ beats the guy with the 130 IQ. Once you have ordinary intelligence, what you need is the temperament to control the urges that get other people into trouble in investing."

The issue of temperament is where Buffett and Pooh intersect. That's because the S&P 500 index's (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) history shows that Wall Street switches between bull and bear markets in a zigzag fashion, while generally moving higher over time. The chart below shows that simply buying and holding the S&P 500 index would have yielded a positive long-term outcome if you had the temperament to do nothing while it gyrated in the short term.
In fact, Warren Buffett has actually suggested that most investors would be better off just buying the S&P 500 index and... doing nothing. That's not entirely true; Buffett would likely recommend continuing to regularly buy an S&P 500 index ETF, such as SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: SPY) or Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: VOO), regardless of market conditions.

For the first time in recent memory, the market doesn't have much of an idea of what the Federal Reserve will do with interest rates at its September meeting. We're less than two weeks away from the Fed's decision, and investors aren't sure whether to expect a rate hike for the first time since 2023 or if the Fed will hold rates steady.
According to the CME FedWatch tool, which monitors how the market is pricing future interest rate movements, there's roughly a 40% chance that rates won't move and a 60% chance of a rate hike. Roughly half of the voting committee favors a hike, and Chair Kevin Warsh didn't offer any forward guidance at Jackson Hole last week. In short, there is considerable uncertainty.

Because of this uncertainty, many investors feel it's time to pump the brakes on investing or do something different with new money. One of them is the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT:VOO).

If you want to invest in stocks, one of the best strategies is to just "buy all the stocks" with low-cost index funds. Among all the exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that let you invest in the entire U.S. stock market, the Vanguard Morningstar Total Stock Market ETF (NYSEMKT: VTI) is one of the best.
The U.S. stock market has been on a strong run for the past 10 years, and because VTI owns 3,515 stocks representing publicly traded American companies of all sizes, it has captured those broader gains. Over the past 10 years, the Vanguard Morningstar Total Stock Market ETF has delivered an average annual return of 14.53%, using recent prices.

The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) has had a good year, up nearly 13% through Aug. 27. That's above its long-term average, and if it continues through the year, it'll be its fourth consecutive year of double-digit returns.
Although much attention is given to the S&P 500, the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSEMKT: IWM), which mirrors the Russell 2000 index, has slipped under the radar while returning 21.5% this year. It's off to its best start since 2021, but that doesn't mean the momentum is stopping. Investors still have time to add it to their portfolios.
