The fragment is from Book 12, when Zeus curses Odysseus' men for killing and eating Helios' sacred cattle.
A researcher was perusing a collection of old Egyptian texts in a Dutch library when he stumbled upon a torn piece of parchment containing a pivotal story: a section from Homer's "Odyssey." The fragment appears to be from a pocket edition of the epic produced in Egypt around A.D. 300.
The researcher, Mark de Kreij, a Greek literature expert and professor at Radboud University in the Netherlands, found the parchment while studying early Christian manuscripts that the Utrecht University library purchased in the mid-20th century, according to a Sept. 14 statement from Utrecht University. Among a collection of Egyptian and Greek texts, de Kreij found a tiny piece of parchment with words he recognized from Homer's epic.
"There are so many boring parts in the Odyssey," de Kreij told RTV Utrecht. "This happens to be a really fun passage."

Olympique de Marseille and Crystal Palace are reported to have reopened negotiations regarding a potential transfer of Quinten Timber (25), according to information from L'Équipe.
Believing that the depth and quality of their midfield is sufficient, OM's management – who continue to seek funds to meet the financial constraints imposed by the National Directorate for Financial Control (DNCG) – are said to have opened the door to the departure of the Dutchman.
Talks regarding a transfer worth over €18m are reportedly underway, alongside those being conducted by the Eagles in an attempt to finalise the deal for Malick Fofana (21).
Having joined OM from Feyenoord for €4.5m last winter, Timber has made 17 appearances in the white and blue since his arrival.
An international, the Utrecht-born player has earned 13 caps (one goal) for the Netherlands. Under contract with Marseille until 2030, he is valued at around €25m by the specialist website Transfermarkt.

Celtic are interested in signing Utrecht winger Adrian Blake this summer, according to Sky Sports. Celtic manager Martin O’Neill wants top attackers at the Parkhead club for next term’s Scottish Premiership **** le defence, and the Hoops have identified Blake. The former Watford star is also on the radar of Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers, but the opportunity to play in the Champions League could appeal to him. Celtic fans will remember Blake from their Europa League game against Utrecht in January.
The Bhoys ran out 4-2 winners but the 20-year-old bagged a spectacular goal in the game. Celtic appear to have been impressed with Blake’s performance, and a summer deal could now be on the cards.
He has one year left on his contract and the Dutch club value him at around £2.5 million. The Hoops could be willing to do a deal for the price and their attack for next season could start taking shape. They have signed Colombian striker Camilo Duran and have offered Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho a deal.
Blake will be a quality addition to the Celtic attack, but pipping English clubs to the Englishman could prove tricky.

PEC Zwolle have announced the signing of experienced defender Nick Viergever from Utrecht on a free transfer. The defender, who was captain of Utrecht at time, has signed a one year deal to remain in the Eredivisie and join up with PEC Zwolle. Viergever leaves Utrecht after four years and narrowly missed out on helping the side return to European football last season, with Utrecht losing out to Ajax in the play off final.
In Viergever, PEC Zwolle get an experienced defender that should help them next season. The 36-year-old has only spent one season away from Dutch football in his career, playing for the likes of Sparta Rotterdam, AZ Alkmaar, Ajax and PSV. That one year abroad was for Greuther Fürth during the 2021/2022 season when the side played in the Bundesliga. After just one year he returned to Dutch football to play for Utrecht. While advancing in years, Viergever still has plenty to offer his new club, having still managed to play 41 matches for Utrecht last season.
