One area Liverpool will need to address over the coming months and potentially years is midfield, with the position largely overlooked during the latest transfer window.
The emergence of Trey Nyoni certainly played a part in that decision. Even after Curtis Jones' departure, Liverpool chose against bringing in another midfielder because of their belief that Nyoni can develop into a top-level player.

The dismissal of chief operating officer Kevin Lamour by Fifa sends a "deeply troubling message to all of us seeking change", according to Uefa vice-president Laura McAllister.
On Monday evening, world football's governing body confirmed Lamour's exit, coming just over two weeks after he told the ******* ociated Press that the Fifa administration was "deceived" by president Gianni Infantino regarding a proposal to sell shares in a World Cup entity to private investors.
Lamour's public statement on 31 July, alongside the resignation of senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro earlier that day, placed Infantino under severe pressure, with Lamour labelling the private investment initiative as "the project of one person".
McAllister, a former Wales captain and current Uefa executive committee member who previously worked alongside Lamour when he served as deputy general secretary at the European governing body, has now voiced strong criticism of his sacking.
"I know Kevin Lamour to be an honourable and exemplary sports leader who was a trusted colleague of mine when I was first elected to Uefa Ex Co," McAllister said in a statement.

After plenty of speculation, Dancing With the Stars pro Witney Carson finally revealed that she is indeed pregnant with baby number three.

Andoni Iraola and his training staff were all present on the touchline which was wonderful to see knowing that the main event at Anfield was soon approaching. There were even a handful of senior players watching from the balcony and I'll note that only Milos Kerkez and Dominik Szoboszlai stayed until the end.
I'm going to start by mentioning new signing Victor Munoz, this kid has pace to burn and is almost brutally direct. There are no Rio Ngumoha step overs but raw power and determination as well some nice switches of direction to throw the shadowing defenders off balance. Munoz also showed his ability with both feet in delivering good crosses and was Liverpool's best attacking outlet.
The other starting winger was Harvey Elliott, a term that should be loosely used in describing his wide play because despite Iraola's vocal instructions for Elliott to stay out wide he ignored him and continued to drift infield seeking the ball. This caused center forward Chiesa to have to go out wide on the right and leaving us with no focal point of attack. I really feel for Elliott after the way his past two seasons have gone but he needed to shake that all off yet it seems he is either vastly shot of confidence or he is trying too hard to be involved to the point he lacks discipline and broke the structure Iraola wanted.
The only other player I really feel is worth mentioning is Trey Nyoni who played the full 70 minutes and was vocally commanding at times during the second half as well positionally disciplined with good breaking up of play and forward passing. Very impressive for a young player who seems to have decided this is going to be his season to prove his worth and has given everything.
Beyond these observations Alexis Mac Allister played around sixty minutes and Wataru Endo played the full match as a center back with none of the senior center backs involved so we should see both new signings Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo get some playing time in the real friendly later.

Pallister was under world-record pace for much of the race and touched in 8 minutes, 6.10 seconds to erase Ledecky's championship record from 2018. Ledecky, the four-time Olympic champion in her signature event, took silver in a season-best 8:07.26.
The American's lone previous defeat in an 800m free final since 2010 came in a small domestic meet in February 2024 against rising star Summer McIntosh of Canada.
"I was just so locked in and I've been really focused on what I want," Pallister said. "The 800 is my favorite event. Katie's such a dominant force."
Responding to defeat, Ledecky said: "That was definitely my best swim of the week, so I'm actually pretty happy with it. If I was going to get second tonight, I wanted to make it a good one. Just wanted to make it hard for Lani."

In one of the biggest shocks of the meet through three days, world record holder Summer McIntosh missed the championship final of the women's 400 freestyle Friday morning, finishing ninth in prelims in 4:08.56.
McIntosh posted a time more than 14 seconds slower than her own world record. It's a stunning result in an event she's dominated internationally over the past year, and it continues a disappointing week in freestyle events for the Canadian superstar.
McIntosh came into the 400 off after losing the 200 freestyle by 0.19 seconds to Australia's Lani Pallister on day one after scratching the 200 ******* erfly. That result already raised eyebrows given her status as one of the most dominant swimmers in the sport. However, missing a final outright is a different level of surprise.
McIntosh is never shy about racing a heavy program, and the ******* ulative toll of that schedule may be part of the story. She was able to win gold last night in the 400 IM, making the freestyle stumbles specifically notable rather than a sign of an across-the-board slump.

A physiotherapist who was part of the Team England backroom staff at the Commonwealth Games has described the "incredible experience" of being part of the games in Glasgow.
Laura Scarlett-McAllister, from Bicester, worked with the English wheelchair basketball teams during the games which ended on 2 August.
The men's team won the silver medal, whilst the women's team claimed gold.
Scarlett-McAllister had a more roundabout way of making it to the games than most, only retraining to become a physio in her 40s.
"I did a lot of sport myself, had a few injuries, and saw the physio quite a lot - so I was interested in physio, but didn't really get into it until later in life," the 55-year-old said.

We're on Day 42 in our countdown to the New Orleans Saints' season opener with the Detroit Lions, which means we had to make a difficult choice for the Saints Play of the Day. 42 yards is how far the first throw traveled in the infamous "River City Relay," getting the desperate New Orleans offense out of their own territory and putting the Jacksonville Jaguars defense on its heels as time ran out in Week 16. You can watch it for yourself right here.
But it wasn't the only pass completed that afternoon. After Aaron Brooks went deep to Donte Stallworth, the wide receiver lateraled to his teammate Michael Lewis, who picked up 7 yards; by that time, running back Deuce McAllister had worked his way downfield to take the pitch. McAllister gained another 5 yards and found Jerome Pathon wide open with a clean path to the end zone. Pathon ran the last 21 yards to score a touchdown, stunning everyone in the stadium and watching from home.
Of course we know what happened next. John Carney trotted out to kick what should've been the tying extra point to send the game to overtime. But he shanked it, Jacksonville won the day, and New Orleans left with an embarrassing loss.
That wasn't the end of anyone's story. Carney spent the three years with the Saints and even appeared in eight games with the Jaguars later in his career, only to return to New Orleans in time for their Super Bowl run in 2009. He did a solid job filling in for Garrett Hartley early that season until the young pro got back on the field in December, at which point he stuck around as a "kicking consultant." At the time, Carney was just the sixth player in NFL history to appear in 300 regular season games. He made a lot of great memories with New Orleans, even if this afternoon in Jacksonville wasn't one of them.
