Small modular reactors, or SMRs, are essentially miniature nuclear power plants. They can be built faster than larger conventional nuclear facilities. And while typically more expensive on a per-megawatt basis, upfront capital investment can also be much lower than that of traditional nuclear plants.
While the concept of SMRs has been around for decades, only two SMR systems have ever been commercialized -- one in Russia, the other in China. Both of those systems are relatively small in generating capacity.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
A new age for SMRs, however, is upon us. The AI industry needs more power quickly to support scaling trillions of dollars in data center infrastructure. Nuclear power can provide large amounts of stable baseload power with minimal refueling needs. And while SMRs are typically higher cost on a per-megawatt basis, the speed of construction of these smaller nuclear systems is highly attractive in today's environment.
The European Investment Bank -- the lending arm of the European Union -- is recognizing the potential of SMRs. On Sept. 4, the group announced a €40 million loan to Steady Energy, an SMR developer based in Finland. According to Reuters, "The loan is the first in a pipeline of SMR investments the EIB has planned."

HELSINKI, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Alphabet's Google will invest at least €13 billion ($15.1 billion) in artificial intelligence infrastructure in ‌Finland over the next two years, it said on ‌Wednesday, calling it the company's single largest investment in Europe.
Finland has become a magnet for data centres as companies including Microsoft and TikTok owner ByteDance seek to reduce energy costs and meet climate goals.
Its cold climate makes coping with the heat produced ‌by data centres cheaper and it also has large amounts of low-carbon electricity.
Alphabet this year increased its global investment to between $195 billion and $205 billion as it seeks to capture growing computing demand.
The investments in Finland will include data centres, electricity grid improvements and clean energy and battery projects driving services such ‌as Gemini, Search, Maps and YouTube, Google said in a statement.

BERLIN, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Finland's President Alexander Stubb said he did not believe Russia would risk an attack against a NATO country, telling Germany's ‌Bild newspaper it would "make no sense" to test the resolve of the alliance.
Western ‌officials have warned of a growing risk of Russian hybrid operations, including cyber attacks, against European countries potentially leading to a direct confrontation with the NATO alliance. German officials have said they ******* s Russia would be in a position to attack a NATO country by 2029.
"If anyone has a crystal ball like that – that's great. I simply see neither evidence nor ‌facts to support it," he told Bild in an interview published on Saturday, adding he did not believe that Russia "would ever want to attack NATO, the world's most powerful military alliance."
Stubb, whose country joined NATO in 2023, abandoning its previous policy of neutrality following Russia's invasion of Ukraine a year earlier, said the alliance had to be prepared for any scenario but he did not believe Moscow was in a position to go ‌to war with NATO.
He said NATO's strength in conventional weapons, missiles and nuclear weapons was too strong to attack, adding that he had intelligence information to back his ******* sment.

STOCKHOLM, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Sweden's military will participate in the surveillance and protection of Finland's territory with Gripen ‌fighter jets and corvette warship, at least until the ‌end of 2026, Finland's defence forces said on Friday.
"The Swedish equipment strengthens air surveillance in particular, releasing the Finnish Defence Forces' own resources for repelling violations and incidents, if need be," Finland's military said in a statement.
The neighbouring countries, NATO's two newest members, already have ‌a close bilateral defence cooperation. Finland has a 1,340-kilometre (833-mile) long eastern border with Russia.
"Sweden has responded to a request from Finland to strengthen its air defence due to the deteriorating security situation," Sweden's Defence Minister Pal Jonson told Reuters, adding that the Swedish armed forces may under the agreement, if necessary, help Finland repel ‌violations of Finnish territory.
Besides fighter jets and vessels with drone combat capabilities, Sweden may also contribute ground-based anti-drone systems, he said.

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Six Nordic national soccer **** ociations piled more pressure on embattled FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Sunday by saying they had "lost confidence" in his leadership.
The **** ociations from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland and the Faeroe Islands issued a joint statement to say they "view the organization's governance and decision-making at the highest level with great concern."
The **** ociations said they stand united with European soccer governing body UEFA and support the measures it has already proposed.
"We expect FIFA to provide binding guarantees that the organization's governance or competitions will never again be opened up to private ownership," the **** ociations said.

Not Australia, England, India or Pakistan. Spain have become the team with the longest winning streak in international cricket, breaking the record previously held by Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh's Australia.

Spain are currently playing in the Men's T20 World Cup Sub Regional Europe Qualifiers in Southern Finland and have won all their matches in the tournament so far. Their latest victory came against Bulgaria on August 18, when they chased down a target of 60 in just 29 deliveries, winning by nine wickets.

Spain moved past Australia's record when they beat Finland in their opening match on August 14. That victory was their 21st in a row in international cricket, taking them one win beyond Australia's previous record of 20.

They have since extended the streak to 24 consecutive victories after beating the Isle of Man, Luxembourg and Bulgaria.

Spain's 24-match winning run has included T20I series against the Isle of Man and Jersey, as well as two series against Croatia. The two Croatia series were separated by the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Sub Regional Europe Qualifier in 2024, where Spain finished second after one of their matches was abandoned.
Australia's previous record of 20 consecutive international wins came across Tests and ODIs under Waugh and Ponting.

The run began on January 11, 2003, when Australia beat England in Hobart. It continued until the third Test against the West Indies in Bridgetown in May 2003.

Australia's winning run finally ended when the Waugh-led side lost the fourth Test against the West Indies.

During that period, Australia went unbeaten in the 2003 ODI World Cup after winning all their matches in a tri-series involving England and Sri Lanka. They then switched to Test cricket and won three matches against the West Indies.

Ponting captained Australia in the ODI tri-series and the World Cup, while Waugh led the team in Tests.

Australia played 17 ODIs and three Tests during their 20-match winning streak.

Spain have now gone past that mark, extending their international winning run to 24 matches.

After finishing a disappointing ninth in the Women's Super League last season, Aston Villa have freshened things up by adding Scandinavian talent to their squad.
Players from Scandinavia are no novelty in the WSL, it is a well-sailed passage across the North Sea for players from the region.
But Villa signing four Scandinavian players this summer - three from Norway and one from Denmark - among eight senior arrivals, having previously had none, is notable.
The total number of senior players from Norway, Finland, Sweden and Denmark in the WSL is 42 across 14 clubs, and Villa now have the fourth largest contingent behind Tottenham (10), Manchester United (seven) and Liverpool (six).
Manager Natalie Arroyo and the Villa recruitment team have turned to Scandinavia to help plug senior squad gaps left by the departures of Kirsty Hanson to Spurs and Ebony Salmon to West Ham, and the retirement of Lucy Staniforth, among others.

Alfred Johansson really does take things one game at a time.
On Wednesday, he admitted he "didn't even know about the draw" in relation to potentially facing Freiburg in the Conference League play-offs, and on Thursday, he certainly wouldn't entertain any questions about reaching that stage by defeating HJK Helsinki next week.
For now, the Finnish side is not on his mind. His sole focus is Falkirk on Sunday.
It will be the Swede's first home game in the Scottish Premiership, and though he only joined over the summer, he's acutely aware of the hold the Bairns had over the Steelmen last season.
"They were the nemesis last year," Johansson said in Helsinki, shortly before he and his players hopped on a plane back home to prepare for the meeting with John McGlynn's side after a 1-1 first-leg draw in Finland.

Aug. 5—LAS VEGAS − Spokane's 22-year-old poker phenom, Lucas Jumalon, is set to go heads-up against Finland's Lauri Saaskilahti starting at 6 p.m. PST for a chance to take home $10 million at the final table of the World Series of Poker's Main Event. The Spokesman-Review is providing live updates from the scene.
Since the only people who are able to see who has what cards are the players, the dealer, and a production team stationed in a trailer outside of the venue, reporting will be focused on the number of chips each respective player has at different points throughout the night. Once pokernews.com posts what hands each player had, the Spokesman-Review will update accordingly.
5 p.m. — Six men in black suits with briefcases in both hands strolled into the Main Event's final table on Wednesday, accompanied by heavily armed guards. Inside the briefcases was $10 million. The money was then dumped in the middle of the poker table and arranged into a pyramid for Saaskilahti and Jumalon to stare at during the game.
5:30 p.m. — Jumalon and his crew have arrived.
6:12 p.m. — Jumalon's support team is chanting the song "We Ready," by Archie Eversole, "Lucas, Lucas, Lucas," while Saaskilahti's supporters are chanting "ole, ole, ole." Jumalon's friends and family are all wearing black shirts, while Saaskilahti's team stand in contrast with all white apparel.

Can Motherwell topple HJK Helsinki to set up a Conference League play-off against Freiburg?
Alfred Johnasson's reign has begun with three wins from three, with HB Torshavn dispatched 5-0 on aggregate before a 2-1 Premiership win at Hibs.
The Steelmen are in Helsinki for Thursday's first leg, and Scottish coach and ****** yst John Walker fully expects them to progress in the tie.
"I think probably in previous years Helsinki were a stronger team in Finland," he told the BBC's Scottish Football Podcast.
"I don't think they're quite as strong as they previously were. I think they're probably well matched in positioning. They are probably the fourth-best team in Finland just now and I think Motherwell have got too much for this side.

Kalle Rovanpera says he is open minded about his return to competitive motorsport next year as the two-time world rally champion plans to discuss his next steps with Toyota.
Rovanpera has received the green light to resume his motorsport career after recovering from a health issue that forced the Finn to abandon plans to make the leap from rallying to circuit racing in Super Formula this year.
But last weekend Rovanpera jumped back behind the wheel of a Toyota Corolla GT AE86 rally car when he joined his world ***** le winning co-driver Jonne Halttunen for demonstration runs on the Harju stage at Rally Finland.
The outing in a car owned by Halttunen was Rovanpera's first drive in rally machinery since stepping away from the World Rally Championship at the end of 2025.
"It was so much fun," the 25-year-old told Motorsport.com. "It has been nice to come see the service park and all the old friends and team-mates. It's nice to be spectating a bit.

New Celtic signing Kasper Hogh is unveiled to the mainstream media at Celtic Park. Photo Roddy Scott IMAGO / Shutterstock
With speculation also mounting over key players moving elsewhere, Martin O'Neill has quite the conundrum when it comes to selecting his first XI of the campaign. Here's how I think that Celtic will line-up this evening.
In goals it's an easy choice, with Viljami Sinisalo fully expected to start. Martin O'Neill is on the hunt for a new goalkeeper who will provide meaningful competition for the gloves but at the moment the Finland international keeper remains first pick for Celtic.
When it comes to the defence, Liam Scales is of course suspended for the first two games of the campaign after going through the booking threshold at the end of last season, and Auston Trusty has just recently arrived back at the club after his World Cup participation with the USA, so Dane Murray could well line up alongside the returning Cameron Carter-Vickers who will make his first competitive appearance in six months.
Or Martin may opt for Trusty if the American World Cup star declares himself ready to perform.

Elfyn Evans extended his lead at the top of the World Rally Championship standings to 30 points as Toyota team-mate Sami Pajari won his home event in Finland.
Evans and co-driver Scott Martin finished in third place for Toyota despite a roll on Saturday, which ended their chances of victory, and hold a healthy margin with four rounds remaining.
The 37-year-old, who has been a runner-up in the WRC five times, lost two minutes when he ran wide on a corner, rolled and got stuck in a ditch on the 14th stage of 20 in the rally.
With the help of spectators - including his dad, former rally driver Gwyndaf, who just happened to be spectating near where he crashed - Evans was able to return to service where Toyota mechanics repairs his GR Yaris.
"A surreal set of circumstances, but we owe the guys who fixed the car because without them the rally would have been over," Evans said after completing the rally.

Elfyn Evans holds third place at Rally Finland despite rolling his Toyota on Saturday, as Sebastien Ogier was taken to hospital after crashing out of the lead.
Nine-time champion Ogier and co-driver Julien Ingrassia had a big accident on stage 17 - Saturday's penultimate stage - after they ran wide on a fast, right-hand corner and their Toyota crashed into trees.
The stage was stopped and an update from Toyota said both Ogier and Ingrassia got out of the car "unassisted", and were taken to hospital for checks but were "conscious and generally OK".
Sami Pajari, who won his first rally at the previous round in Estonia, inherited first place from Ogier and leads his home event with two stages remaining on Sunday.
The Finnish driver holds an advantage of 46.4 seconds over Toyota team-mate Oliver Solberg, while Evans moved into third place ahead of Hyundai's Adrien Fourmaux after setting the fastest time on Saturday's final stage.

World Rally Championship organisers have red flagged stage 17 at Rally Finland after Sebastien Ogier suffered a high-speed crash from the lead.
The reigning world champion and co-driver Julien Ingrassia were heading towards the end of stage 17 when their Toyota GR Yaris Rally 1 car fired off the road at speed. The car was pitched into a series of rolls heading towards the trees.
Toyota has confirmed that Ogier and Ingrassia exited the car unassisted and are conscious, but will be transported to hospital for further checks.
"Both driver and co-driver were able to get out of the car unassisted. They are both conscious and generally OK, and will be transported to hospital for further checks. The team will provide further updates in due course," read a statement from the Toyota Gazoo Racing.
A statement from the FIA added: "During SS17 'Västilä' at WRC Rally Finland, the crew of car #1 , Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia, were involved in a high-impact accident.

It's time for a first look at John Calipari's third team with Arkansas basketball.
The Razorbacks begin a four-game preseason tour in the Caribbean Friday, July 31, facing The Bahamas National Team. All of the exhibitions will be against international competition.
This will be an important week to build chemistry. The Hogs return one player who logged meaningful minutes from last year's team that reached the Sweet 16. Billy Richmond III turned down the NBA Draft and is back for his junior season.
Otherwise, Arkansas has a slew of newcomers competing for playing time this season. There are eight true freshmen on the roster, including four five-star recruits.
One of those five-star prospects is Finland's Miikka Muurinen, but the 7-foot forward has not yet received clearance from the NCAA and won't be available to play this week.

Greece have called up the brother of Australia batter Sam Konstas to their national cricket team as they prepare to make a surprise bid to qualify for the 2028 men's T20 World Cup.
It is understood Billy Konstas, four years older than Sam at 24, has been included in Greece's 14-man squad for a European qualifying event in Finland from 14 to 21 August.
Sam made his Test debut for Australia at the age of 19 against India in the Boxing Day Test in 2024, memorably ramping Jasprit ***** rah three times in one over.
Billy plays grade cricket in Sydney alongside his day job where he combines cricket coaching with physiotherapy.
The elder Konstas is joined in the squad by another Greek-Aussie in 21-year-old leg-spinning all-rounder Blake Faunce, who played representative age-group cricket for Australian Capital Territory.

West Ham United have confirmed that Oona Siren has signed a new two-year contract, with the Finland international committing her future to the Hammers until the summer of 2028.
The announcement is another positive step for the club as preparations continue for the 2026/27 Barclays Women's Super League season. While summer transfer windows are often defined by new signings, securing the futures of established players is equally important. West Ham have ensured one of their most dependable performers will remain in east London for years to come.
Since arriving from Norwegian side LSK Kvinner in September 2024, Siren has become one of the most influential players in the squad. Calm in possession, intelligent without the ball and relentless in her work rate, the midfielder has developed into a player her teammates can rely on every single week.
The new deal also comes at an exciting time for the club following the appointment of Rita Guarino as head coach. As the experienced Italian prepares for her first campaign in charge, keeping a player of Siren's quality provides an important foundation to build upon.
After signing her new contract, Siren spoke of her happiness at remaining with West Ham. She made it clear she believes there is still plenty to achieve in claret and blue.

Wrexham defender Zak Vyner is looking forward to see how popular the Welsh club are in the United States for himself.
The Championship club, who recently faced Wisla Krakow in Poland and Manchester United in Finland, have travelled to the US for three games.
Wrexham's previous two tours of America have attracted huge crowds due to their global profile under owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac and the success of the Welcome to Wrexham documentary series.
"It's going to be a lot of hard work, but it'll be a great experience for me to get a taste of it," Vyner said.
"I only sort of get a taste of the American fans through social media and when I signed and the amount of love that I have got from them.
