One position at Manchester City that did seem uncertain was the goalkeeping position. The safe bet when the 2025-26 season ended was that Gianluigi Donnarumma would remain City's first-choice keeper under Enzo Maresca. His outstanding display in the 2-0 Carabao Cup final win over **** nal was perhaps Trafford's highlight during his return and his final game coincided with Pep Guardiola's farewell against Aston Villa last May.
Trafford previously spent eight years with the Blues having joined our Academy in 2015.

Port Vale face "no sterner test" for an opening competitive game of the new season than Friday's Carabao Cup tie against Wolves, says boss Jon Brady.
Relegated from the Premier League last season, Wolves are expected to be strong candidates to go straight back up from the Championship this term.
Vale have their own promotion ambitions in League Two after dropping out of the third tier in 2025-26, and Brady is keen to see where his side is at in the game at Molineux after their pre-season.
"It certainly means something. If you don't win you're out, if you win you're through. There's no sterner test," he told BBC Radio Stoke.
"I'm excited. I spoke to the boys about the excitement to see them at probably one of the best tests they'll get.

Josh Windass and Ben Sheaf are unavailable for Wrexham's Carabao Cup first round encounter with Middlesbrough at Riverside Stadium on Friday night (20:00 BST).
Forward Windass - who netted 17 goals across all competitions in his debut campaign with the Red Dragons last term - did not feature in any of Wrexham's pre-season friendlies due to a calf issue.
Midfielder Sheaf was also a notable absentee for his side's summer fixtures against Wisla Krakow, Manchester United, Leeds United, Liverpool and Sunderland.

Max Alleyne returned to Manchester City in January of last season in City's hour of need after Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol both went down with serious injuries. Alleyne had shone for Watford in the Championship when he was recalled by City. He was immediately thrown into the starting lineup by Pep Guardiola when City took on Brighton at the Etihad and went on to make seven appearances for Manchester City last season. Alleyne showed enough last season that there is a future for him at the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders.
Enzo Maresca's side has now played friendlies against Inter Milan and the K-League All-Stars. Max Alleyne has come on at halftime of both matches. In those two games, Alleyne has looked to be a more mature player and it does seem that his time with Pep Guardiola's squad last season, on top of his time at Watford, has done him the world of good.
Vitor Reis has been impressive playing at centre-back in each of the past two friendlies that Manchester City have played. At the same time, Max Alleyne has quietly gone about his work alongside Vitor Reis. Enzo Maresca's system, much like Pep Guardiola's, employs a high defensive line which means that Manchester City's defenders have to guard for the ball over the top and any counterattacks from Inter Milan and the K-League All-Stars. In this regard, Max Alleyne has been elite. He has closed down danger well and his ability to anticipate the game and any danger from City's past two opponents has also stood out.
In possession, Max Alleyne has also played his role well. He isn't yet a game-breaking centre-back in possession. However, he knows where to play the ball and how to keep Manchester City's possession play ticking over. That has been pleasing to see from Alleyne.

Of the 34 first round ties, 33 of them will be played between Friday and Monday of this weekend.
The competition, known as the Carabao Cup due to the tournament's sponsors, is traditionally played as a midweek fixture. The only usual exception to this is the final, which is played at Wembley on a Sunday.
The competition normally begins on a midweek date following the opening round of Championship, League One and League Two fixtures.
But this season, the competition will instead start on the weekend prior to the start of the EFL league seasons.

Rotherham United have signed experienced striker Tom Bradshaw on a one-year deal.
The 34-year-old was a free agent after leaving Oxford United at the end of last season.
The former Wales international has scored 115 goals in 473 career league appearances.
Bradshaw, who becomes Rotherham's ninth summer signing, could make his debut for the League Two side in Saturday's Carabao Cup first-round tie against West Bromwich Albion.
His deal includes an option for another year, although the club have not disclosed whether that is in their favour or the player's.

One final 'Summer Series' outing, one final pre -season run out in the States before a return to Europe and another encouraging display for Regis Le bris before attention turns to Lens and Stade Rennes in our final pre-season tests.
The team news provided the first talking point of the evening, with Robin Roefs replacing Melker Ellborg for his first appearance after returning from the World Cup, as well as Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki coming in for Alan Browne and Enzo Le Fée with Le Fée missing out with a knock — hopefully just a precaution.
Wrexham, meanwhile, made seven changes to their side that narrowly lost to Liverpool, with commentators suggesting that the team was expected to be close to that which will start against Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup next weekend.
From the first whistle Sunderland looked sharper, quicker and a far more cohesive unit.
The first chance arrived inside the first couple of minutes, when Trai Hume clipped a lovely ball down the line for Diarra, whose cut back found the oncoming Romaine Mundle. However, good pressure from the defender meant Mundle sliced his effort wide on his weaker foot.

Leicester City have made their fourth signing of the summer by bringing in attacking midfielder Liam Cullen from Swansea City.
Wales international Cullen, 27, has signed a three-year deal with the League One outfit for an undisclosed fee.
Cullen joined the Swans' youth academy as an eight-year-old and has gone on to make more than 200 appearances for the club since his debut against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup in August 2018.
He scored in the South Wales derby for the Swans in their 3-2 victory over Cardiff City in April 2023 before repeating the feat in a 2-0 win a year later and in a 1-1 draw in August 2024.

Walsall have made their 10th signing of the summer transfer window with the arrival of Harrogate Town winger Reece Smith on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.
The 24-year-old featured in all but one of Harrogate's League Two games last term, having joined from non-league Maidenhead United where he came through the academy and spent four and a half seasons in the first team.
Smith, who played in Harrogate's 2-0 win at the Pallet-Track Stadium in the penultimate game of last season, said his move to Walsall felt like "a big step up" and added boss Lee Grant's plan to use him on the left or as a number 10 was "music to my ears".
Grant, who is putting the finishing touches to his first pre-season at the club having taken charge in May, described the deal for Smith as "another coup" for the Saddlers having been keen to sign him for "a very long time".
