A man who suffered third-degree burns from hot sand after using a disposable barbecue on a beach has warned others to be aware of the dangers.
Sam Knight had been using it on Cefn Sidan Beach, Carmarthenshire, with his family and stepped on sand that was still hot.
The 27-year-old had to be carried off the beach after suffering badly blistered feet and needed weeks of treatment.
Experts at a burns centre say injuries such as this are becoming increasingly common and warned beachgoers to take precautions.

BANGKOK (AP) — China announced a series of economic measures Wednesday against the United States, including controls on exports of drones to the U.S. and a ban on dealings with six American entities, in response to recent restrictions imposed by Washington.
Tensions are simmering between the world's two biggest economies ahead of an expected visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to the U.S. in September, despite signs of warming ties during his meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump in Beijing in May.
The Commerce Ministry said the sanctions are in response to recent moves from the U.S., including a ban by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission on imports of Chinese drones, and the Department of Homeland Security's decision to add 43 Chinese companies to the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act entity list to prevent imports of goods made with forced labor.
The "measures seriously violate the important consensus reached by the two heads of state and severely damage China's legitimate rights and interests. China has no choice but to take necessary countermeasures in response," the ministry said in a statement.
It emphasized that China was acting with restraint and urged the U.S. to scrap its measures against Beijing and cease its "erroneous practices." It also warned of further sanctions if the U.S. rolls out new restrictive measures against China.

Palantir CEO Alex Karp on Monday once again warned that AI frontier labs are too untrustworthy for enterprises.
The CEO, who famously studied philosophy and earned a PhD in social theory, implied in Palantir's quarterly shareholder letter that these were the kinds of capitalists who gave rise to Marxist socialism.
"There are Marxist overtones and undertones to our business," he wrote in a letter to shareholders about Palantir's outstanding quarter. "Others, including many of those building large language models, intend, knowingly or otherwise, to capture the means of production of their purported partners."
To be clear, AI labs have hardly cornered Palantir out of the market. Quite the opposite. The skyrocketing use of AI helped Palantir achieve record-breaking results. For its second quarter, the company reported $1.9 billion in revenue, up 93% over the year-ago quarter, and $1.1 billion in profit, "more profit in a single quarter than we did in total revenue in the same period the year before," he wrote.
During the quarterly conference call with Wall Street **** ysts, he explained his **** ogy further, relying heavily on a sort of "tech bro patriot" jargon common among defense tech companies. (Palantir's senior leadership is entirely male.)

CVS Health (CVS) stock has climbed 73% over the past year, from $60.38 to $104.43, against 18.7% for the S&P 500. The group did not move as one: UNH gained 60% and ELV 31%, while CI fell 4.2%. If you watched it run without owning it, the question is not what happened at the top, but what was sitting in the public record before the price responded.
The company puts its fiscal Q1 2026 improvement primarily on Health Care Benefits, the Aetna insurance business. Segment adjusted operating income was about $3 billion on a medical benefit ratio of 85%, against 87% in fiscal Q1 2025, and Aetna contributed over $1 billion of year-over-year improvement. Enterprise adjusted operating income of about $5.2 billion rose more than 12% and adjusted earnings of $2.57 a share rose over 14%, on revenue above $100 billion that grew over 6%. Its two non-insurance segments went the other way, with adjusted operating income down about 7% at Health Services and about 9% at Pharmacy and Consumer Wellness. Full-year 2026 adjusted earnings guidance moved to $7.30 to $7.50 from $7 to $7.20. So the shape of the recovery is clear enough: insurance margin coming back, with the other two segments giving some of it away.
That recovery was no discovery. At its fiscal Q3 2024 results, Health Care Benefits posted an adjusted operating loss of $924 million on a medical benefit ratio of 95%, and management warned the segment might show operating losses for full-year 2024 after earning over $5.5 billion of adjusted operating income in 2023. It then did the arithmetic out loud: restoring Aetna to 2023 profitability was worth well over $3 of embedded adjusted earnings per share. By the fiscal Q4 2024 report it had published the conversion rate too: roughly $0.75 of adjusted earnings per share for each point of Health Care Benefits margin, and about $800 million of segment adjusted operating income for each point of medical cost trend. Medicare Advantage margins had ended 2024 between negative 4.5% and negative 5%, against a 3% to 5% target. That was the promise, and only the promise.
The fiscal Q1 2025 report, the last one public before the run began, is where the swing actually landed: Health Care Benefits adjusted operating income of about $2 billion, up over $1.2 billion from a year earlier, on a medical benefit ratio of 87%, down 310 basis points. Full-year 2025 adjusted earnings guidance went up to $6 to $6.20 from $5.75 to $6, and the company committed to exiting the individual exchange business in 2026, a book then projected to lose $350 million to $400 million across 2025. The base was visibly depressed: revenue over the trailing twelve months was $378.96 billion, up 5.0% year over year, against a three-year average of 8.1%, with net margin at 1.4% against a three-year peak of 2.7%. Gianni Infantino has come under more pressure from within Fifa after the governing body's secretary general Mattias Grafstrom described the abandoned World Cup sell-off plans as a "sad and reproachable series of events" in an internal email to staff.
Swedish official Grafstrom, who is one of Fifa's top bosses, did not mention the embattled Fifa president by name but said in his email that while the turmoil surrounding Fifa is "difficult to comprehend and accept.... individuals, unstable moments and unfortunate episodes come and go". The world's shrinking spare capacity to produce gasoline and diesel is running up against the White House's desire to temper the rise in pump prices ahead of the midterms.
The chief executives of Exxon Mobil and Chevron warned Friday that refineries that produce gasoline and diesel are already running at full tilt and can't be turned up much more to make up for global shortages due to the war in Iran and other geopolitical hotspots. That could mean higher prices for consumers at the pump in the coming months, they said.
Exxon Mobil CEO Darren Woods said the company would "push as hard as we can" to increase fuel production given that higher energy prices have a "significant impact on consumers and people's pocketbooks."
"With all that supply out, we're well below available capacity, frankly, that I've ever seen," he said on the company's earnings call. "It's going to take a while for the industry to kind of climb its way out of that hole."
Their remarks come as the Trump administration is racing to blunt the impact of elevated gasoline prices with three months until Americans go to the polls. The American Automobile ***** ociation reported nationwide pump prices were averaging $4.10 per gallon — nearly a dollar more than the same period last year. Refineries in the United States, meanwhile, operated at roughly 97 percent of their operable capacity this month, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said this week, while Shell reported Friday that it was running its refineries at record rates actually above their official capacities during the second quarter.

Five months of mostly closed Strait of Hormuz have not sent oil prices spiking to $150 or $200 per barrel, as many ******* ysts had warned in March.
Even as more than 10% of global crude oil supply suddenly disappeared from the market, oil didn't hit record high levels. Crude oil prices haven't even stayed permanently above $100 per barrel.
Three key drivers have kept oil prices from surging to never-before-seen highs. First, governments started tapping strategic reserves, including as part of the IEA-coordinated 400-million-barrel stocks release, to offset the 1 billion barrels of crude that never made it out of the Gulf in the first three months of the conflict. Next, Asia slashed consumption with fuel-saving measures and reduced refinery throughput.

Arguably, the biggest cushion the market has had was China's crude oil import behavior. The world's largest crude oil importer had amassed an estimated up to 1.4 billion barrels of crude in commercial and strategic stockpiles before the Iran war. The huge cushion allowed it to slash imports when the Strait of Hormuz closed, and prices spiked.

The number of wealthy non-dom taxpayers shrank by 1,200 last year amid warnings that Labour's tax rises could push even more rich people offshore.
New figures from HMRC reveal that 9,000 non-doms – foreign investors living in Britain – left the country or changed their tax status in the financial year ending April 2025.
Meanwhile, the number of non-doms arriving in the country dropped 14pc to 8,600. A further 800 "deemed-domicile" taxpayers – former non-doms who have since become British tax residents – also quit the UK, for an overall net reduction of 1,200.
Leslie MacLeod-Miller, the chief executive of Foreign Investors for Britain, a pressure group, warned that government inaction could push more investors and entrepreneurs to leave, reducing their £13.6bn annual tax contribution to the public finances.
"Britain is losing internationally mobile wealth at an accelerating pace," he said. "The exodus of wealth will only get worse if the Government does not introduce a competitive tax regime to restore Britain's place in the world."

Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes newly-appointed Test coach Stephen Fleming should have taken charge immediately instead of delaying his arrival until England's tour of South Africa later this year.

Fleming was named England's new Test coach after Brendon McCullum was removed from the role earlier this month, though the New Zealander has retained his position as the team's white-ball coach. However, Fleming will not oversee England during the upcoming three-Test home series against Pakistan, which begins on August 19 at Headingley.

Questioning the decision, Vaughan said England would miss an opportunity to help Fleming settle into the role before bigger ***** ignments such as the Ashes.

"Stephen Fleming is a good appointment as England's Test coach, but he should be in position for the start of the Pakistan series, rather than taking over fully for the South Africa tour in December," Vaughan wrote in the Telegraph.

"It is about the small details, gaining experience of going to grounds such as Edgbaston – which hosts an Ashes Test – getting to know people involved in English cricket and fact-finding about our game by meeting the county coaches who can help him. These are the one-per-cent details England let slip during the Brendon McCullum years but are required to win major trophies."

Vaughan also suggested that England agreeing to Fleming's preferred timeline reflected a shift in the appeal of the coaching role.

"It also suggests the England job has lost a little of its allure because he does not feel he must start immediately. It also shows a little bit of desperation that England were willing to appoint a candidate on his terms, rather than their own," he added.

Fleming arrives in England after an extraordinary stint with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. During his 17-year ***** ociation with the franchise, he guided the team to five IPL ***** les and two Champions League trophies alongside captain MS Dhoni before stepping down earlier this month.

Vaughan, however, warned that the former New Zealand skipper would be walking into a very different environment, pointing out that England captain Joe Root does not offer the same dynamic that Dhoni did at Chennai.

The AI buildout has resulted in an unanticipated casualty distant from Silicon Valley: telecom equipment manufacturers, who now compete with hyperscalers for the same memory chips. Three major companies, SK Hynix, Samsung, and Micron, control more than 95% of worldwide DRAM production, and as AI data centers use an increasing share of that output, memory chips used in telecom base stations become scarcer and more expensive as a direct result. That is the mechanism behind Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC)'s worst single-day stock reaction in nearly three years.
The company's shares plunged about 12% on July 14, reaching their lowest level since February, after Ericsson warned that growing component costs, particularly memory chips, will affect margins in the future. Looking into Ericsson's Q2 2026 results, the market's harsh reaction was more about forward guidance rather than a breakdown in existing operational execution. Adjusted EPS was SEK 1.22 (~$0.13), which was in line with market expectations. Adjusted gross margin increased to 48.4%, a two-percentage-point year-over-year rise after normalizing for a prior-period IPR licensing settlement. Meanwhile, reported net sales declined 6% to SEK 52.7 billion ($5.62 billion), missing the SEK 53.71 billion forecast, while organic sales excluding currency and one-offs remained essentially flat.
What worried investors was guidance and cash flow, not the print itself. Free cash flow before M&A fell to SEK 0.4 billion from SEK 2.6 billion a year ago, owing to increased inventories being accumulated ahead of scheduled third-quarter deliveries. Jefferies, which rated the stock at a Hold with a target price of 98 Kronor, framed the sales miss as being centered primarily on delayed India deliveries within the Networks division as opposed to broad-based demand weakness, and noted Ericsson is forecasting a stronger-than-seasonal third quarter as those delayed deliveries arrive.
The sudden selloff has generated an attractive valuation gap for long-term investors. Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) is currently trading at a 14.45x forward P/E multiple, representing a significant discount to key infrastructure rivals such as Nokia, which trade on similar 5G-cycle and edge-connectivity theses. The market's knee-jerk reaction appears to regard temporary component inflation as a permanent weakening of Ericsson's earnings potential, resulting in a clear disparity between price and underlying value.

July 29 (Reuters) - Medical device maker Boston Scientific on Wednesday lowered its annual profit forecast, citing pressure on its Watchman heart ‌device business.
The company, in May, warned of pressure on its ‌Watchman heart device, a small implant used to help prevent stroke-causing blood clots in patients with atrial fibrillation, due to softer-than-expected uptake.
Boston Scientific said growth was being weighed down by a decline in standalone Watchman procedures as physicians increasingly combine the implant with other cardiac treatments during a single visit.
As a result, ‌the company said it expects ⁠flat Watchman revenue growth in the second and likely third quarter, despite continued uptake in combined procedures.
On Monday, Boston ⁠Scientific's board approved a new company-wide restructuring plan aimed at cutting costs and better positioning the company for future growth.

July 29 (Reuters) - The top U.S. commander for the Middle East has warned troops that cellphone videos shared online can help Iran target American bases, and sources told Reuters some deployed personnel could soon be ordered to surrender their phones.
Any crackdown on mobile communications would add a new dimension to the conflict for the thousands of ‌U.S. troops in the region, many of whom still rely on phones to periodically message loved ones and **** ure them they are well.
Admiral Brad Cooper, in a previously unreported letter, said ‌Iran was benefiting from being able to see the success or failure of its strikes in near real-time by searching news reports or online posts by journalists referencing "reactions, photos, and footage from the cellphones of our troops."
"The direct, unavoidable cost of this open-source intelligence could be measured in the lives of American service members and civilian residents in targeted Gulf countries," Cooper, head of U.S. Central Command, wrote in his July 28 letter, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters.

July 28 (Reuters) - Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on Tuesday he called his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araqchi, following Iran's ‌denunciation of a Ukrainian drone attack on one of its ‌ships, warned him against escalation and told him to end all support for Russia.
"I emphasised the necessity to refrain from any escalatory steps, as well as to end any support for Russia's war against Ukraine. This war is illegal and it must end," Sybiha wrote on X of his ‌conversation with Araqchi.
Araqchi confirmed ⁠on X that he had been ***** ured by Sybiha that the attack on the Iranian ship was unintentional ⁠and that Kyiv did not seek escalation.
"Iran does not seek escalation either, but made clear any attack on our citizens or interests is unacceptable. There must be restitution for losses," Araqchi said.
Araqchi had said on Sunday ‌that the Ukrainian attack on the Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, which killed one sailor and injured another, could not go unanswered.

Crypto exchange BitMart said Sunday it will wind down its trading platform after nine years, sending its BMX token crashing and marking the second major crypto exchange to announce its closure in a week.
The exchange stopped taking new registrations, deposits, and orders from 01:30 UTC on Sunday. All spot and derivatives trading ends August 26, and the platform formally shuts on January 31, 2027.
The platform added that it "remains committed to managing this wind-down process in a responsible, orderly, and transparent manner." Withdrawals remain open, though BitMart warned that identity, device, sanctions, and source-of-funds checks could slow processing as users rush to exit.
BitMart blamed its "operating conditions, market environment, and future strategic direction," without saying which forced the decision. BMX, its exchange token, has crashed 81% over the past week to $0.057, cutting its market value to $19.6 million, according to CoinGecko data.
The platform lost $196 million to a hot-wallet breach in December 2021, one of the larger exchange hacks of that cycle, and covered customer losses.

A woman is going viral after posting a video in which she says she was fired from a new job after being late on her first and second day for what she insists were good reasons.
TikTok user bigisrayy shared a video from the driver's seat of her car on Tuesday, July 21, in which she explained in the caption that she lost her job on her second day due to "a patten [sic] of 'absence ' that they thought was unprofessional and disrespectful."
In the video, she explained that she wanted to be "transparent" with her followers and revealed that she told her new employers that she'd have to be late on her first day because she had to go to the DMV to take care of a suspended license. She claimed, in a follow-up video shared a day later, that her uncle worked at the DMV, so she'd hoped it would be a speedy process, but her uncle was on vacation.
As a result, she showed up 30 minutes late on her first day, but claims she warned her employers she would be late and communicated with them on the day.
Things got tense the following shift when she showed up five minutes late. Rather than call ahead and warn them that she'd be late, she hoped she could simply apologize in person.
