The Columbus Blue Jackets are the latest team to eliminate separate radio and television broadcasts, moving to a unified broadcast across platforms for the 2026-27 National Hockey League season.
Blue Jackets television broadcasters Steve Mears and Jody Shelley will continue in their current roles for the simulcast broadcast. Radio play-by-play announcer Bob McElligott, who has been with the Blue Jackets for the past 17 years, did not have his contract renewed.
Dylan Tyrer, who has been a radio host for the past seven years, will remain in that role.
"Bob McElligott has made significant contributions to the Blue Jackets organization on the air and in the community over the past 17 years," said Blue Jackets Vice President of Business Intelligence and Broadcasting Marc Gregory. "Bob's voice was at the heart of many of our club's unforgettable moments and helped shape memories that will live on for years to come. We sincerely thank him and wish him nothing but success moving forward."
The Blue Jackets are one of seven NHL teams seeking a new television home following the shutdown of the FanDuel Sports Networks. The team has not yet announced where its television broadcasts will air during the 2026-27 season, though it has announced that the broadcasts will be produced by NHL Productions. Radio broadcasts will remain on 97.1 The Fan in Columbus.

The WNBA's momentum, which started gaining steam with Caitlin Clark's arrival in the 2024 draft, has been unstoppable. Heading into the 2026 season, ESPN's VP of women's sports programming and espnW, Susie Piotrkowski, spoke about the network's view of Clark as a "gateway drug" into women's sports.
"If that brought you in, I'm going to keep you here," Piotrkowski said.
Through the first half of the season, she, along with the WNBA's other media partners in its new 11-year, $2.2 billion media deal, have delivered. The league held its 2026 All-Star Weekend in Chicago over the weekend, and per a report from Austin Karp at Sports Business Journal, WNBA telecasts are up 12% compared to last season at the All-Star Break across its rights partners.
To Piotrkowski's credit, Clark has certainly been the biggest driver of that success, as the top seven broadcasts in the first half of the season all involved her Indiana Fever. Indiana's win over the New York Liberty on July 18, which averaged 2.58 million viewers, was the most-watched WNBA telecast ever on CBS, and the second-most-watched WNBA game this season, behind only Fever-Las Vegas Aces (2.64 million) on NBC and Peacock on July 12.
Unsurprisingly, Clark's ratings impact was also felt over All-Star Weekend.

After several years as one of ESPN's most visible personalities, hosting the 6 p.m. SportsCenter and anchoring WNBA Finals coverage, Elle Duncan departed the Worldwide Leader to become the face of Netflix's growing sports venture. She's also been tabbed to lead USA Network's studio coverage for its WNBA broadcasts.
On Monday, Duncan appeared on The Sports Gossip Show podcast and discussed the ever-prevalent and increasingly bizarre coverage surrounding Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark. Over the 2026 WNBA All-Star Weekend, Clark sat down with ESPN's Malika Andrews and discussed how "emotionally exhausting" the constant coverage surrounding her can be.
"I feel like media and journalism have a responsibility to tell the stories," Clark told Andrews, "and a lot of the time you guys are the ones controlling the narratives about what people read and what people talk about. And a lot of that is sometimes so far out of touch with what is reality."
Although Duncan doesn't believe Clark is at fault for how far out of control things have spun, she wants to see the three-time All-Star take more ownership of the situation.
"I would love for it to be very clear to the people who think they are her fans but are using her, if she would say, 'stop that sh*t, I don't want it, I'm tired of it.' As opposed to what we've seen, which is 'the media makes up these narratives, the media makes up this discourse.'

In a major development, London-based streaming platform DAZN will have a major hand in distributing local NBA broadcasts to fans next season.
According to a report by Austin Karp in Sports Business Journal, "DAZN is close to acquiring full exclusive local broadcast rights next season" for five NBA teams formerly under contract with Main Street Sports Group, owner of the now-defunct FanDuel Sports Networks. Those teams are the Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers, Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs, and Memphis Grizzlies. Additionally, DAZN is close to securing streaming-only arrangements with the Orlando Magic and "possibly" the Charlotte Hornets.
DAZN will also overtake what is now known as the Gotham Sports app, a joint streaming venture between YES Network and MSG Networks that sells access to local broadcasts for seven New York-area franchises — the Yankees, Knicks, Nets, Rangers, Islanders, Devils, and Sabres.
The news is a culmination of DAZN's nearly year-long effort to break into the local sports broadcast market in the United States. After initially considering a lifesaving merger or acquisition of Main Street, DAZN instead chose to allow the company to collapse and attempt to court local rights for franchises independently. The streamer initially struck out on every MLB team following Main Street's collapse, but is now set to own streaming rights for at least nine NBA clubs, with the possibility of adding the Washington Wizards as a tenth under a non-exclusive streaming deal, per Sports Business Journal.
With the NBA looking to launch a centralized local streaming hub ahead of the 2027-28 season, DAZN will reportedly sign deals that are either one season in length or have mutual opt-out clauses following the upcoming season as teams demand the flexibility to join the league's aggregated local rights solution when it launches. If DAZN or a team invokes an opt-out clause, it will reportedly pay a termination fee unless, in the team's case, DAZN fails to meet certain performance metrics.

KANSAS CITY, MO - OCTOBER 26: Karl Ravech of ESPN speaks on set the day before Game 1 of the 2015 World Series between the Royals and Mets at Kauffman Stadium on October 26, 2015 in Kansas City, Missouri. (Photo by Maxx Wolfson/Getty Images)
For more than three decades, Karl Ravech became one of the most recognizable voices in baseball broadcasting, anchoring “Baseball Tonight” and serving as ESPN's lead MLB play-by-play caller.
His broadcasts spanned virtually every high-profile baseball event at the network, making him synonymous with the sport for many viewers. But that iconic run came to a sudden end on Monday night, when Ravech called the nationally televised matchup between the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers. At the time, though, he and his colleagues were unaware that it would be their last time working for the broadcaster together.

The Portland Trail Blazers are still trying to find their footing under new team owner Tom Dundon.
Portland made headlines in May after the organization laid off about 70 people as part of a restructuring. The negative press kept coming on Wednesday, when The Oregonian's Joe Freeman reported that longtime broadcaster Kevin Calabro was parting ways with the organization.
Calabro wasn't the only one. He left under his own terms, but Forbes' Maury Brown also reported that "TV **** yst Michael Holton and statistician Tom Haberstroh, as well as TV hosts Neil Everett and Jamie Hudson have all been let go."
Portland released a statement about the cuts to its broadcast teams.
"We are deeply grateful to all the hard-working individuals who have contributed to our award-winning broadcasts over the years. I can't comment on individual personnel decisions, but I can confirm that we are making changes for the upcoming season as we continue to evolve with the changes in the broadcast industry and look to become more efficient in our business operations.

You might've noticed that this year's World Cup broadcasts have featured a heavy dose of on-screen cameos from celebrities, politicians, and the omnipresent FIFA president Gianni Infantino. And that's by design.
According to a recent report by Adam Crafton in The Athletic, FIFA mandate that its production partner, Host Broadcast Services, the company that produces the so-called "world feed" that every broadcaster across the globe uses for World Cup matches, air what's called a "dignitary shot" in each half of each match that showcases "the highest-ranking officials present at a game, as well as those described by FIFA in its accreditation system as "VVIPs" (Very, Very Important People)."
These VVIPs can include "heads of state, confederation officials, celebrities or members of soccer federations," Crafton reports.
The chief VVIP, it would appear, is Infantino, who reportedly made it a goal of catching two matches per day during the World Cup's group stage. Infantino reportedly used a private jet provided by Qatar Airways, a FIFA sponsor, to zip between multiple matches in a day.
The practice of showing Infantino on the broadcast apparently dates back to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, when emails were sent to television crews mandating the FIFA president be shown during the game. Later guidance would specify Infantino should not be shown while using his cellphone.

The race at Silverstone, which saw Ferrari's Charles Leclerc claim his first victory of the season ahead of Mercedes' George Russell and his own team-mate Lewis Hamilton, ended behind the safety car.
The safety car was deployed on lap 48 of 52 when Red Bull's Max Verstappen spun out and became beached in the gravel at Stowe corner. While it initially seemed as though racing would resume before the end of the race, with the notice that the safety car would come in being shown on the broadcasts, the race finished under safety car conditions.
The FIA later confirmed that the message had been shown in error and explained that there were not enough laps left to complete the unlapping process, which is why the safety car stayed out.
During an appearance on The Red Flags Podcast, Steiner did not hold back in his **** sment of the situation.

MIAMI (AP) — Ashleigh Hallam teaches English as a second language at her local library in Indiana. Soccer is now teaching her Spanish as a second language.
For her, this World Cup couldn't make more sense.
Hallam is among a sizable number of English-speaking people in the U.S. who are doing something these days that might be considered a bit surprising: They're watching broadcasts of World Cup matches in Spanish on Telemundo, even though they have little idea — or in some cases, no idea — what the announcers are saying.
“I can’t really understand everything they’re saying on Telemundo because they’re speaking in Spanish,” Hallam said. “But you understand what’s going on.”
The math is simple. Census figures show that about 20% of the U.S. is Hispanic, yet Telemundo points to Nielsen ratings to show that roughly half the World Cup viewers in the U.S. have watched at least some portion of some matches in Spanish. Every match of the tournament has been available for U.S. viewers in English on Fox or FS1, on Telemundo or Universo in Spanish, and there are streaming options such as Fox One or Peacock.

ONE Fight Night 46 on Prime Video just received a double dose of MMA intrigue.
Two compelling mixed martial arts contests have been added to the August 14 card. Jhanlo Mark "The Machine" Sangiao meets Marcos Aurelio in a bantamweight showdown, while Natalie Salcedo welcomes undefeated Polish newcomer Magdalena Czaban in an atomweight clash.
The event broadcasts live in U.S. primetime from Bangkok's historic Lumpinee Stadium and is headlined by Stella "Always Hungry" Hemetsberger's ONE Women's Strawweight Muay Thai World **** le defense against Natalia "Karelian Lynx" Diachkova.
For Sangiao, the matchup represents a chance to build serious momentum in one of ONE Championship's most stacked MMA divisions.
The Team Lakay prince returned to action in style last year, submitting hard-charging Mongolian Shinechagtga Zoltsetseg with just 18 seconds remaining in their dramatic three-round battle. That victory erased the sting of his first professional defeat and reminded fans why the 24-year-old Filipino remains one of the most exciting talents in the bantamweight MMA ranks.

Lionel Messi is scoring at will in the 2026 World Cup. FIFA will be scoring at will in advance of the 2030 World Cup.
Alex Sherman of CNBC reports that Disney, Netflix, and YouTube are interested in bidding on the rights for the next iteration of the tournament, in four years. Per the report, Amazon could also get involved.
Sherman adds that executives at various media companies are budgeting between $1.5 billion and $2 billion for the package. Fox is paying a paltry $485 million for the current World Cup.
FIFA reportedly hopes to bundle the English- and Spanish-language broadcasts for 2030. Telemundo has the Spanish-language rights in the U.S.
The 2030 World Cup will be played on three continents and in six countries, with games in Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

Tickets to the 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup may be scarce and very expensive, but there are several ways soccer fans can watch all 104 matches scheduled across the United States, Mexico and Canada in the tournament now underway.
"Imagine, with this World Cup, a Super Bowl every single day for five weeks," U.S. team captain Tim Ream told CBS News, adding, "It's not an accident that 5 billion people will be watching."
FOX and NBCUniversal have the broadcasting rights for the 78 games being played in the U.S., as well as the 13 apiece in Canada and Mexico. A record of 40 matches, or more than a third of the World Cup, will air during primetime on FOX, according to the broadcaster.
For Spanish-language broadcasts, every single match will air on NBC-owned Telemundo and Universo.
All matches will also be available for on-demand streaming on several platforms. Here's what to know.

As the stakes increase, so will the ratings.
Wednesday night's 2-0 win by the U.S. men's team over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 2026 World Cup's Round of 32 generated a record American audience of 33.5 million for the English and Spanish broadcasts.
On Fox and related properties, 24.4 million watched the match. For NBC, the telecast primarily on Telemundo and Peacock drew an average of 9.1 million viewers.
That's the kind of audience a great NFL regular-season game draws. On Monday night, with the Round of 16 game between the U.S. and Belgium starting at 8:00 p.m. ET from Lumen Field in Seattle, the new record could already fall — and the U.S. games could begin to approach NFL postseason numbers.
Regardless, as long as the U.S. keeps winning, the audience will get larger and larger.

Fox’s broadcast of the USMNT’s Round of 32 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina on Wednesday became the most-watched soccer telecast in English-language U.S. history, with a preliminary average of 24.429 million viewers and a peak audience of 31.883 million.
The number blows past the record the USMNT itself had set earlier in the tournament. The team’s group-stage opener against Paraguay initially drew 15.986 million viewers before Fox’s final numbers pushed that figure to 18.037 million, a mark that stood as the most-watched Men’s World Cup telecast in English-language U.S. history for the rest of group play. The USMNT’s win over Australia came in close behind at 16.22 million in final numbers — up from 14.78 million in preliminary viewership — driven in part by a Friday afternoon kickoff that still managed to outdraw every non-USMNT match in the tournament.
Fox saw this coming, as President of insights and **** ytics Michael Mulvihill told Colin Cowherd before the knockout rounds began that a Round of 32 game in primetime could clear 30 million viewers on its own, with the Round of 16 potentially matching it. He pegged a hypothetical USMNT run to the final at an average of 50 million, which would dwarf the 26 million viewers who watched the 2022 final in the U.S. across English and Spanish broadcasts.
The USMNT’s run continues into the Round of 16 against Belgium, a matchup that, per Mulvihill’s own projections, carries an even higher ceiling than the record set by Wednesday’s game.

It seemed inevitable whether Comcast opted to spin out NBCUniversal or not, but it appears as if the NBC Sports-branded regional sports networks are destined to unwind from the media company currently operating them.
As was initially reported by Matt Gelb in The Athletic on Monday, the remaining NBC Sports Regional Networks are in flux as NBCUniversal looks to continue its divestment in the regional sports network business. The news comes as Comcast announced it plans to separate NBCUniversal from its telecom business in about a year’s time.
NBC has moved to exit the regional sports network industry for some time now, shuttering or otherwise offloading a handful of its networks over the last decade and change as the headwinds of the cable business and ever-increasing rights fees for live sports have put the squeeze on such operations. Fewer and fewer traditional regional sports networks continue to exist, and many teams are looking elsewhere — to streaming, over-the-air networks, or yet-launched consolidated hubs — for the future of their local media rights revenues.
For NBC, unwinding the rest of its regional sports network operations might be a bit tedious as many of the franchises that remain tied to the networks also own stakes in their respective network. That has long been common practice in the regional sports network business, but certainly complicates a sale process, particularly when these networks are paying rights fees that are now likely seen as above market-rate.
According to a report by Austin Karp in Sports Business Journal, “team ownership” will be a “complicating factor” as NBC likely looks to sell its regional sports networks. The San Francisco Giants, Boston Celtics, and Philadelphia Flyers all have ownership stakes in the networks airing their local broadcasts.

Las Vegas Aces guard Chelsea Gray will join Prime Video’s WNBA coverage as a player contributor, making select in-studio appearances on the pregame show for the remainder of the 2026 season, Front Office Sports reported Monday.
The only active four-time WNBA champion, Gray is a six-time All-Star who has built a legitimate broadcast résumé between WNBA seasons. She worked as an ACC Network ******* yst on two separate occasions, calling regular-season and NCAA Tournament games as part of the network’s Nothing But Net studio coverage, and contributed to the Sacramento Kings’ pre- and postgame broadcasts during the 2023-24 NBA season.
The move follows the same template Kelsey Plum has been operating under since May, when Prime Video announced the Los Angeles Sparks guard as a player contributor for select appearances throughout the season. On the NBA side, Kyle Lowry joined Amazon’s inaugural NBA coverage in September 2025 with what the streamer described as “increased responsibilities in the future,” responsibilities that materialized when Lowry stepped into the studio for select shows during the NBA playoffs.
The active-player contributor model has taken hold across the W this season, with Sophie Cunningham landing a comparable role at USA Sports.
Gray joins a studio team anchored by host Allie Clifton alongside Hall of Famers Cynthia Cooper, Swin Cash, and Teresa Weatherspoon, with Candace Parker, Lindsey Harding, and Tamera “Ty” Young also contributing. Michael Grady and Parker lead the top game broadcast team, flanked by play-by-play announcers Lisa Byington and Mike Watts and ******* ysts Kara Lawson and LaChina Robinson. Prime Video is in the first year of an 11-year WNBA deal covering 31 regular-season games annually, one first-round playoff series each season, seven conference finals series, and three WNBA Finals.

NBC is less than two weeks away from its most ambitious MLB production yet, and the network’s VP of production, Rob Hyland, laid out exactly how Star-Spangled Sunday is going to work.
The July 5 event — announced as part of NBC’s full 2026 MLB schedule back in January — will see all 15 MLB games air on Peacock, making it the first time in the sport’s history that every game on a single day will be available in one place. NBC will handle two games directly — Mets-Braves and Padres-Dodgers — while 10 others will be produced by local broadcast teams, three of which will air simultaneously in their home markets on Peacock.
Peacock will serve as the central hub for the entire day, offering a four-game tile viewing experience that lets subscribers watch multiple games simultaneously. There will be no home base studio show anchoring the day, but Hyland said NBC is building in as much consistency as possible across all 15 productions.
“There will be a lot of carry-over on this day as you are flipping from game to game,” Hyland said during a recent conference call with reporters.
The upper-left score bug that appears on NBC’s baseball coverage will appear on 14 of the 15 games, with the lone exception being NESN’s broadcast of Red Sox-Angels, which will use its own graphics package. Theme music will be consistent across all broadcasts, and NBC is designing the day to reward channel-flipping with a coherent, unified feel throughout.
