The Oklahoma Sooners kick off their 2026 college football season on Friday against the University of Texas at El Paso Miners. This will mark the first step of Oklahoma's pursuit of a return to the College Football Playoff.
This season will feature some players who are expected to have an enhanced role compared to last year. One of those is second-year safety Omarion Robinson. The former four-star appeared in nine games last year, totaling just three tackles. He mainly played on special teams. This year, he's listed as the backup to Peyton Bowen and Michael Boganowski at both safety spots.
Head coach Brent Venables revealed at his game week press conference that he can already see Robinson playing with more confidence.
"I see him playing with a different level of confidence than he did a year ago," Venables said. "Just on a different planet from that standpoint. And again, the consistency thing is what jumps out the most. He's earned a lot of trust. The more he plays, the better he gets."
That trust could be especially important for Robinson as Oklahoma looks to maintain the strength of it secondary. The Sooners lost Robert Spears-Jennings to the NFL draft and Jaydan Hardy to the Colorado Buffaloes, creating opportunities for younger safeties behind Bowen and Boganowski.

In the end, it was not close. To be honest, that was to be expected.
Ty France was the overwhelming answer to the Gaslamp Ball Reacts Survey poll question this week. "Who has been more impressive so far this season?" Respondents had the choices of France, Luis Campusano, Walker Buehler or Bradgley Rodriguez. Looking back, it would have been appropriate to add Yuki Matsui to the list of candidates as well, but France would probably remain the top choice.
The right-handed slugger has been stellar defensively for the Padres this season, despite a bobble on a play on Saturday night. The fielders, Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts and Jake Cronenworth all seem to enjoy having a Gold Glove Award winner manning first base. It allows them to make throws without the pressure of having to make them perfect. France himself is not perfect, but more often than not, if he can get to a throw he does and that results in more outs and less traffic on the bases for San Diego pitchers.
France came into the 2026 season as a minor league invite, but he has taken full advantage of his second opportunity with the Padres. There is no reason to think he would not receive a multi-year contract offer that would start in 2027 if the season is not lost due to a lockout. France added to his season totals with a home run int the second game of the series against the Tampa Bay Rays. He is currently hitting .287 after 355 at-bats. He has 19 home runs with 59 RBI and 47 runs scored. France has also walked 30 times. He has been entrenched as the No. 4 hitter in the San Diego lineup and there have been calls from some fans the the Padres to slide him up to the No. 3 spot in front of Machado who has been struggling as of the late.

Ever since the great Claude Rains first uttered the immortal line "Round up the usual suspects!" in Casablanca, the phrase has been ingrained in the popular lexicon — so much so that it inspired the ****** le of an entirely different movie nearly 50 years later. You hear it everywhere, in any context where you can expect to see a predictable set of participants.
On Saturday, a struggling Juventus were buoyed by a pair of very unusual suspects — guys most fans figured would be gone, or at least on their way out the door, by this point in the transfer window. Unable to penetrate a deep-lying Parma defense, it was Nico González who gave a moribund attack an instant shot in the arm, forcing a magical save before scoring a deflected goal off his own rebound to open the scoring. Then, with two minutes left, the game was sealed by another unlikely goalscorer: Teun Koopmeiners, who had just come on after an injury to Andrea Cambiaso and finished off a quick attack with a beautiful finish.
The unlikely redemption arcs from players most ****** umed were out of the team's plans, or at least on the very fringes, were welcome developments for a team that learned this week that their talisman, Kenan Yildiz, would miss two to three months once he undergoes surgery on a broken metatarsal. After a first half that seemed to be crying out for his creativity, it was the transfer-listed González who gave the Bianconeri the necessary spark to take Parma down 2-0 as they began to look forward to next week's big match against AC Milan.
Apart from Yildiz, Luciano Spalletti was also missing Weston McKennie (muscle fatigue), Edon Zhegrova, and Khéphren Thuram, who suffered a setback in his knee recovery and could now require surgery. Jeff Ekhator came back to make his first Juve squad in a competitive game. Spalletti's 4-2-3-1 was therefore shuffled a bit. Guglielmo Vicario started in goal after getting over the cramp that forced him off late against Frosinone. Pierre Kalulu and Zeki Çelik played on the defensive flanks, while Bremer was partnered with new signing Jhon Lucumí in the middle of defense. Manuel Locatelli and Douglas Luiz played in the midfield, while Francisco Conceição, Jonathan David, and Jérémie Boga supported Randal Kolo Muani in attack.
Carlos Cuesta lost his first Parma match last week against Cagliari, and were looking for something better here. His only missing player was former Juve prospect Hans Nicolussi Caviglia, who had to have a surgery of his own this week. Edoardo Corvi started behind a 4-4-2. Enrico Delprato, Mariano Troilo, Dominik Drobnic, and Emanuele Valeri arrayed themselves in front of him. Sascha Britschgi and Mandela Keita bookended Christian Ordóñez and Adrían Bernabé in midfield. El Bilal Touré and Simone Lontani started up front. Drobnic and Lontani were both teenagers, and the former was making his debut.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Nick Gonzales led off the 12th inning with an RBI single and the Pittsburgh Pirates snapped their three-game skid with a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Monday night.
Esmerlyn Valdez homered and Rafael Flores Jr. had an RBI double in the sixth for the Pirates, who rebounded from getting swept at Dodger Stadium last weekend with just their 11th win in 31 games.
Jake Cronenworth tied it in the eighth with a two-out RBI single for the Padres, whose three-game winning streak ended with only their eighth loss in 29 games. San Diego's eight-game home winning streak also ended.
San Diego loaded the bases with one out in the 11th, but Kirby Yates (2-5) struck out Jackson Merrill and got Xander Bogaerts to line out. Merrill went 0 for 5 on his bobblehead night, striking out on three pitches with the bases loaded in both the eighth and 11th, and also failed to make a diving catch on Flores' RBI double.
After Jared Triolo scored on Gonzales' single off Jeremiah Estrada (2-3), Yohan Ramirez struck out the side in the 12th to earn his second save.

WASHINGTON, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Total U.S. debt has topped $40 trillion for the first time, the Treasury Department said on Wednesday, drawing fresh warnings that a fiscal crisis is brewing as ballooning costs for social safety-net programs and interest payments far outstrip revenues held back by tax cuts.
The Treasury's latest daily cash and debt balances statement showed total public debt outstanding at $40.047 trillion on ‌Tuesday, a total that includes Treasury securities held by the public of $32.266 trillion and intra-governmental debt holdings of $7.782 trillion.
The federal government's IOU has now more than doubled in less than a decade, from $19.95 trillion when President Donald ‌Trump was sworn in for the first time in January 2017. Roughly one-third of that increase occurred during two years of frantic government borrowing to fund the COVID-19 pandemic responses undertaken by Trump and former President Joe Biden, while the fiscal policy choices of both presidents combined with long-running tax-and-spending imbalances account for the rest.
Budget watchdog groups have anticipated crossing the threshold for weeks and issued stark warnings that a full-blown debt crisis could erupt unless lawmakers confront an unsustainable fiscal outlook and raise taxes, cut spending or both.

San Diego Padres starter Michael King deserved better than he got during a 4-2 loss to the New York Mets at Citi Field on Wednesday. The loss was the second of the series for the Padres who finished their two-city road trip with a 3-3 record against the Cleveland Guardians and the Mets.
King was still not the dominant ace the Friar Faithful have been waiting for him to be, but he was affective. The right-hander worked into the seventh inning, completing 6.2 innings. He allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. King gave up the two runs on one swing of the bat by Carson Benge in the bottom of the fourth inning. King had two outs and worked to a 3-2 count against Benge before the rookie hit a two-run home run to left field that gave New York a 2-0 lead over San Diego.
The Padres got on the board in the top of the fifth inning when Tatis ripped a line drive double into left-center field that allowed Xander Bogaerts to score from second base to make the score, 2-1. San Diego had opportunities throughout the game to add to its total but never seemed to come up with the big hit in run-scoring situations.
The Padres fought until their last out or outs in this case. San Diego was trailing New York 4-1 in the top of the ninth inning and put two runners on with one out and Gavin Sheets delivered a pinch-hit single to drive in a run and make the score, 4-2. The Padres had runners at the corners with one out and pinch hitter Austin Hays was called on to face Mets reliever Kodai Senga.
Hays hit a ground ball back through the middle of the infield that was fielded by Mets second baseman Marcus Semian. He was able to step on the second base bag to force out Sheets and threw to first in time to get Hays to end the inning and the game.

The Mets started a three game series against the Padres on Monday night. The Padres were sitting in a playoff spot, just a game ahead of the Diamondbacks for the final Wild Card spot. Walker Buehler was getting the start for the Padres, while Nolan McLean was taking the mound for the Mets, hoping to add another entry to what was shaping up to be a fantastic first full season for the rookie pitcher.
The first inning was a challenge for McLean. It looked like it might be an easy inning after Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a line out right into McLean's glove for a first out on the first pitch of the game. But back-to-back singles put two runners on with one out. Two more singles followed immediately after, but each one was hit to Carson Benge, and each resulted on an out at the plate with Benge throwing both Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado out at the plate on consecutive plays.
The Mets led off the bottom of the first with an A.J. Ewing single and a Francisco Lindor walk, putting two runners on for the Mets with no outs. Bo Bichette then hit a single to drive in Ewing as the first run of the game on his bobblehead night. Luis Robert Jr. drove in the Mets second run of the game two batters later, hitting a sacrifice fly to bring Lindor in to score.
The second was another difficult endeavor for McLean. Two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases with no outs, spelling trouble for New York. Luis Rengifo hit a comebacker to McLean, who threw home for a force out to keep the Padres scoreless, but also kept the bases loaded with just one out. The Padres finally cashed in when Tatis, up for the second time in the game, hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Gavin Sheets and cut the Mets lead down to one run. Conenworth hit a single, but this time Ewing came through for McLean, throwing Xander Bogaerts out at the plate to end the inning.
McLean and Buehler traded scoreless innings for the next few frames. McLean came out of the game after six innings, having allowed just the one run. Keeping it to one run was impressive given that he gave up six hits and four walks while only striking out three, which helped illustrate the full team effort on defense alongside McLean.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Guardians rookie outfielder Chase Delauter was taken out before the third inning of Sunday's game against the San Diego Padres due to mild left hamstring tightness.
Delauter started the game in right field. He popped out to shortstop Xander Bogaerts in the first inning but also made a catch on a ball hit near the warning track by Manny Machado in the first inning.
The 24-year old Delauter has been Cleveland's most consistent hitter throughout the season. He is second among AL rookies in RBIs (57), fifth in home runs (13) and eighth in batting average (.286),
Delauter is also batting .339 (19 for 56) with two home runs and six RBI's this month. He has recorded two hits or more in seven of Cleveland's 14 games in August and had a 13-game on-base streak snapped.

It's been busy in Chapel Hill this past week as students have been moving in on and off campus, and the First Day of Class is set for tomorrow. It looks like those classes will include a native of Mali who Michael Malone has high hopes for in terms of much-needed front court depth.
On Saturday, Inside Carolina's Sherrell McMillan had the major scoop that Sayon Keita had obtained his visa to come to the United States, and with that he should be on the ground in time to attend classes this week. That means he should be eligible to play when the 2026-27 basketball season tips off.
It will be interesting to see just how quickly Keita can get up to speed, as the rest of the the first team ***** embled by Malone — sans Cameron Fens — have been able to have informal practices together, allowing them to start to learn how to play together. Keita will be behind in that aspect, and fans will undoubtedly remember how much another late arrival in Luka Bogavac struggled. That Keita plays a different position and is younger might actually help him adjust quicker.
The news means that Malone will now have depth — albeit untested at a high-major college level — in the front court which was considered the major hole of the first ***** embled team. Another international transfer, Alex Samodurov, should also see minutes along with Fens — presuming Fens' ability to play isn't wiped out on appeal to higher courts.
With classes starting and the first public game for the Tar Heels less than two months away, the pressure will be on for Malone's inaugural Tar Heel squad to gel quickly and cohesively. The team is already staring at an announced non-conference schedule of Georgia, Marshall, West Virginia, Arkansas, Butler, Georgetown, Kentucky, and Illinois. Rumors are also out that another major non-conference game will be announced this week, also to be played in Greensboro.

West coast games have not agreed with the Brewers this season. For the sixth time this season, the Brewers gave up double-digit runs in a game, and three of those have happened on the west coast. This time, it was an 11-2 loss to the Padres on Wednesday night in San Diego.
The game started off well enough for Kyle Harrison, who needed just ten pitches to get through the first inning despite allowing a single. However, it all started falling apart in the second. The inning started with back-to-back singles by Jackson Merrill and Austin Hays. Then, with runners at first and second, catcher Luis Campusano hit a ground ball directly to David Hamilton at third base. It was a tailor-made double play at minimum, and potentially even a chance at a triple play. Hamilton stepped on third and threw to Jihwan Bae at second, but Bae missed the catch. It should have been a error, but is not counted as one since by rule, you can't ****** ume a double play will be turned.
That loomed large as the inning continued. Xander Bogaerts popped out for the second out, but then Jake Cronenworth hit a double to left to score a run. After that, Fernando Tatis Jr. worked a full count, and then drew a walk after a challenge on a called strikeout. That brought up former Brewer Luis Rengifo. On the second pitch he saw, Harrison threw a fastball right down the middle, and Rengifo sent it far out over the left field fence. The Padres had a 5-0 lead.
From there, it might as well have been an insurmountable lead as the Brewers flailed against Walker Buehler. In his six inning start, he threw just 58 of his 98 pitches for strikes, and that was with the Brewers' hitters taking some bad swings. They did get a run off him in the third on a Jackson Chourio groundout with runners at second and third base, but that was all. That was the only run Buehler allowed, finishing his day with just one run, three hits, and two walks allowed while striking out five.
Meanwhile, Harrison had to keep pitching to not use up the bullpen, but his struggles were not done. He allowed a solo home run to Tatis Jr. on the first pitch of the fourth inning. The next inning, he allowed a two-run home run to Campusano. His day came to an end at 4 2/3 innings pitched, allowing eight runs on ten hits and three walks with just three strikeouts. His fastball velocity was notably down throughout the start, averaging between 92 and 94 mph, and topped out at 94.5 mph.

Jackie Kennedy has done many notable things in her life, including attending some of the celebrations during Queen Elizabeth's coronation. Back in the '50s, when Kennedy was known as Jacqueline Bouvier, she was a young reporter working in London. If a recent transfer update from The Daily Record is believed to be true, Rangers are eyeing a move for Kosta Nedeljković. They would prefer a permanent deal for the Aston Villa right-back but are also open to a season-long loan with an option to buy contract.
The 20-year-old Serbia international progressed through Red Star Belgrade's academy ranks before being loaned out to Grafičar in the second division for first-team football. He made 20 senior appearances for Red Star during the 2023-24 season and was eventually roped in by the Villans for £8m.
After a sporadic start in the first six months, Nedeljković joined RB Leipzig on loan for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign. He rejoined the Bundesliga giants last summer, but was hardly involved, primarily due to injury concerns. He has now returned to Villa Park, only to find himself behind Matty Cash, with the latter being the preferred choice on the right.

The Milwaukee Brewers — fresh off a solid 5-2 homestand to push them to 74-44 on the season — are headed back to the West Coast after visiting the Giants and Angels last week. This time, they'll face two slightly more formidable opponents in the Padres and Dodgers. First up is San Diego, currently in a fight for an NL Wild Card spot alongside the Phillies and D-backs (among several others). At 62-57, the Padres have turned things on in recent weeks to put themselves firmly into the playoff race.
The Brewers have lost several position players in recent days, as shortstop Cooper Pratt hit the IL on Sunday with a hamstring strain and Joey Ortiz is considered day-to-day with neck tightness. The team also lost prospect Jett Williams, who, in his first at-bat back from injury, re-injured his hand while swinging. Outfielder Sal Frelick is also out, though he's on his way back as he began a rehab ***** ignment over the weekend. The Men's First Team beat Chelsea 1-0 in their first friendly of the pre-season Summer Tour.
The victory was part of the Hong Kong Football Festival 2026. The decisive moment came courtesy of Edon Zhegrova, who scored a superb goal in the second half of what was a tightly contested match.
Juventus got off to a very good start, immediately posing a threat with a long-range shot from Manuel Locatelli, set up by Douglas Luiz, which went just wide. As the minutes ticked by, however, Chelsea stepped up a gear, taking control of possession without, however, managing to take the lead.
The English side came close to scoring first with a header from Danny Welbeck following a cross from Geovany Quenda, then with Quenda setting up Marco Palestra, who was denied by an excellent defensive intervention from Pierre Kalulu. In the 29th minute, it was Michele Di Gregorio who came to the Bianconeri's rescue to save a close-range effort from Jamie Gittens.
Juventus responded with character, particularly towards the end of the half. The big names for the San Diego Padres ambushed the Arizona Diamondbacks early, plating three runs in both the first and second innings, then powered through a late hiccup with a 9-4 win on Tuesday at Chase Field.
Manny Machado had a four-RBI night as he matched his season high as one of three Padres (59-55) with three hits, while Randy Vásquez had one of his strongest starts of the season. Despite allowing two or fewer runs in eight of his last nine starts, Diamondbacks (60-54) All-Star Eduardo Rodriguez got roughed up early.
San Diego's big bats combined for nine hits and five runs scored, as Jackson Merrill matched Machado with a trio of knocks while adding a pair of RBI. Merrill also joined Fernando Tatis Jr. and Luis Rengifo in coming across home to score twice as the Brown and Gold put up 16 hits — the Padres have notched all three of their 16 or more hit efforts since July 19.
It was backed up by Vásquez following up his 4 2/3 inning relief appearance on July 30 by pitching six complete for the sixth time and not surrendering a run for the third time when getting the nod. Geraldo Perdomo was the only D-back to touch him, getting singles in the first and fourth.
Tatis got to offense going right out of the gate with a lead off rocket-liner double down the third base line, then came home to score on Machado's one-out double. Then San Diego tacked on two more with two down, as Merrill singled to right and Machado beat out Corbin Carroll's throw to the plate. It allowed Merrill to take second, which was key when Xander Bogaerts cracked it back up the middle for an early 3-0 lead.

The Padres won for the ninth time in 11 games, moving one game behind the D-backs for the third and final National League wild-card playoff spot.
Jackson Merrill had three hits and two RBIs, while Jake Cronenworth also had a three-hit night. Vásquez (7-6) gave up just two hits and walked one while striking out one.
The Padres jumped all over All-Star Eduardo Rodríguez in the first inning with leadoff hitter Fernando Tatis Jr. starting the game with a double to left. Machado followed with an RBI double before Merrill and Xander Bogaerts added run-scoring singles for a 3-0 lead.
San Diego extended its advantage to 6-0 in the second, partly because of Arizona's sloppy defense. Jase Brown reached on a bunt single when there appeared to be confusion on who was covering first base and Ketel Marte's error on a grounder led to a pair of unearned runs.

Former Auburn baseball star Casey Mize was the center of several discussions ahead of the MLB trade deadline. On Monday, he was finally dealt just before the cut-off time.
ESPN's Jeff Passan reported Monday that Mize is heading to the San Diego Padres after spending time in the Detroit Tigers organization since he was drafted No. 1 overall in the 2018 MLB Draft. The trade is a four-player deal, as Mize and infielder Gage Workman are heading to the Padres in exchange for a pair of left-handers: Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf.
Mize departs the Detroit Tigers, a team sitting in fourth place in the American League Central Division, and heads to the San Diego Padres to join a starting rotation for a team just one game out of a National League Wild Card spot as of Monday.
Dealing for Mize was one of several pitching moves the Padres made ahead of the trade deadline. The Padres also traded for San Francisco Giants left-hander Robbie Ray and right-hander Hunter Stratton from the Pittsburgh Pirates to join a talented offensive roster that features stars Fernando Tatis Jr, Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, and star closer Mason Miller.
Mize joins his new club with a 4-6 record, but boasts a 2.70 ERA with 85 strikeouts in 16 starts with the Tigers. The Padres remained a game back of the third NL wild-card spot.
The Padres had to rally after Osleivis Basabe, a late replacement for MLB batting leader Luis Arraez, hit a two-run double off All-Star Mason Miller with two outs in the eighth to tie it at 5.
Xander Bogaerts hit a leadoff double off Dylan Smith (0-3) and was sacrificed by Freddy Fermin. With two outs, Fernando Tatis Jr. was intentionally walked before Cronenworth singled to center.
Miller (4-1) got the win as well as his first blown save.

Fernando Tatis Jr. set a new career high with five hits while driving in a pair of RBI, as the Padres (54-53) cracked a home-season-best 16 hits to extend their win streak to four games. Encinitas-born Mickey Moniak hit a two-run home run, the eighth of his career against San Diego, part of his three-RBI night for the Rockies (42-56), who saw four costly errors all come back to hurt.
Jackson Merrill led off the ninth with a single, his third of the game, then stole second and advanced to third when Hunter Goodman's throw went into center field. Back-to-back walks to Luis Rengifo and pinch-hitter Sung-Mun Song cued up Bogaerts' decisive RBI, which made for the seventh walk-off win of the season by San Diego and their third time against Colorado.
The Padres rallied to tie in three consecutive innings, with Manny Machado lacing a single to the right-center alley that Hunter McCarthy bobbled and allowed Jake Cronenworth to score in the eighth. Mason Miller then came on to set the Rockies down in order, whiffing all three he faced to set the stage and ultimately earn his third win.
Reliever Adrian Morejon was able to limit the damage in the top, as after a Bogaerts error loaded the bases and a walk to Ezequiel Tovar pushed across a run, the lefty got a ground out to end the inning.

Michael King deserved better than what he got. The San Diego Padres starter completed six innings and scattered five hits while allowing just one run to the Atlanta Braves. The Padres did nothing to support him on offense and his night ended with Atlanta holding onto a 1-0 lead. Jackson Merrill helped out in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run to tie the game, but that was all the offense could muster in support of King.
San Diego and Atlanta entered the eighth inning with the teams still tied at 1-1. The Padres went down in order in the top of the eighth inning. Wandy Peralta took the mound in the bottom half of the frame and had a complete meltdown that saw the Braves score four runs on three hits with a walk in just 1/3 of an inning pitched. He was replaced on the mound by Randy Vasquez who had his own struggles over 2/3 of an inning as he allowed two more runs on four hits with a strikeout.
The six-run inning by the Braves set the stage for the Padres in the top of the ninth. The game appeared all but over before the San Diego offense suddenly came to life. Pinch-hitter Sung-Mun Song flied out to start the frame, but Xander Bogarts walked and Jake Cronenworth doubled to put runners at second and third. Gavin Sheets followed with an RBI-single to make the score, 7-2. Sheets advanced to second base on a wild-pitch and the Padres had runners at second and third with one out. Fernando Tatis Jr. stepped to the plate and hit a triple that got under the glove of Atlanta center fielder Michael Harris II and rolled all the way to the wall. The hit by Tatis made the score, 7-4.
San Diego tacked on its final two runs when Luis Rengifo connected on a two-run home run off Atlanta closer Raisel Iglesias to make the score 7-6 before he struck out Manny Machado and Ty France to end the game. Based on the recent success and only being down a run, those were the two batters the Padres would have wanted at the plate, neither of them were able to come through in a big moment.
San Diego will try to win Game 4 in Atlanta to force a split this morning at 9:15 a.m.

Hoffman in. Xander Bogaerts, leading off, ground one softly (63.4 mph) up the middle, but between second and short. Ernie Clement got to it too deep to make a play. Bogaerts stole second. Manny Machado lined a single to center, scoring the run. Gavin Sheets ground one at Andrés Giménez, but Clements was slow getting to second so they couldn't get the lead runner. The out at first wasn't enough. I didn't understand why Clements couldn't get to the bag before the base runner. They had a shot at a double play. After that, a steal of third and a sac fly brought in the go ahead run. That was the game.
Barker talked about it after and watching it, again, I still don't get what Ernie was doing.
And the bottom of the ninth went too quick. Ground out, pop out, strikeout.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Manny Machado singled in the tying run in the eighth inning and Ty France's sacrifice brought in the go-ahead run for the San Diego Padres, who beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 on Sunday to take two of three.
The Padres won for just the fifth time in 16 games and pulled back to .500 at 48-48.
The defending American League champion Blue Jays head into the All-Star break at 45-51.

The San Diego Padres brought the winning run to the plate with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Toronto Blue Jays. Xander Bogaerts stepped into the batter's box with Jackson Merrill and Fernando Tatis Jr. on first and second base after the Padres recorded three consecutive two-out hits off Padres closer Louis Varland. Bogaerts worked the count full, but on the final pitch of the at-bat he hit a routine ground ball to third base, which resulted in the final out of the game to give San Diego a 5-3 loss at the hands of Toronto in their series opener at Petco Park on Friday night.
The Padres came into the bottom of the ninth trailing, 5-2. Jake Cronenworth pinch hit and struck out to open the inning and Luis Rengifo hit a deep fly ball into left field for the second out of the inning. Luis Campusano lined a ball back through the middle of the infield and Tatis followed with a line drive single through the right side of the infield. Merrill stepped in and connected on another base hit, which scored Campusano to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Bogaerts represented the winning run and Petco Park was waiting to erupt with a big hit from the San Diego shortstop. Bogaerts started the scoring in the game in the bottom of the first inning when he connected on a two-run home run off starter Shane Bieber to put the Padres up 2-0. Considering the speed of Tatis and Merrill and the fact that they were on the move on a 3-2 pitch, a base hit by Bogaerts might have tied the game, but it would have likely brought San Diego within a run with Manny Machado set to come to the plate. However, that was not how the 3-2 pitch played out. Instead, Bogaerts bounced a ground ball to Toronto third baseman Kazuma Okamoto who threw across the diamond in time to get Bogaerts to end the inning and the game.
Okamoto proved to have the game-winning hit for the Blue Jays in the top of the fifth inning. Padres starter JP Sears allowed two of the first three batters of the inning to reach base on singles and Jhony Brito came in to face Vladamir Guerrero Jr. Brito allowed an RBI-single and Toronto tied the game at 2-2. Brito then faced Okamoto who won a seven-pitch at-bat with a 377-foot three-run home run into the left field bleachers to give the Blue Jays a 5-2 lead.
San Diego will try to stop a two-game losing streak in the second game of the series against Toronto today at 5:40 p.m.
