Serie A side Juventus signed Nick Woltemade on loan from Newcastle United late in the summer transfer window. While the German is yet to make his debut for the Bianconeri, big praise has come from Juve legend Gianluigi Buffon.
The Germany international has a frustrating 2025/26 campaign with the Magpies. Ex-Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe often used him deeper on the pitch and this led to a fall in prominence.
A move to Juventus is now viewed as a shot at redemption. Buffon spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport about Juve's business in the summer and placed special emphasis on Woltemade.
The ex-keeper said: "I'm curious about Woltemade. I want to see if his physicality, his 198 centimeters (6'4") combined with excellent technique, will be as dominant as I expect."
Buffon also revealed belief that Woltemade can make the same impact as Zlatan Ibrahimovic during his younger days.

Juventus have announced the arrival of Pape Matar Sarr from Tottenham on an initial loan while also agreeing a season-long loan deal for Newcastle forward Nick Woltemade.
The Serie A club will pay Spurs about 2.5m euros (£2.1m) for the loan of Senegal midfielder Sarr.
The club confirmed the deal includes an obligation to buy the 23-year-old for 27.5m euros (£23.6m) if certain conditions are met during the 2026-27 season.
Sarr, who joined Spurs from Metz in 2021, made more than 100 Premier League appearances for the north London club and also helped them win the Europa League in 2025.
He has made 42 appearances for Senegal since his international debut in 2021 and won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022.

Germany forward Nick Woltemade is in line to complete a loan move from Newcastle United to Juventus.
Multiple reports on Monday evening suggested that a full agreement was in place, but Sky Germany insisted that the former Stuttgart forward was yet to make a final decision.
That has changed this morning, with the German broadcaster now calling the move a "done deal" after Woltemade gave the final green light.
The 24-year-old forward will fly to Turin this morning to undergo his medical, with the Serie A giants reportedly paying €4 million to sign him on a straight loan.

Newcastle United travel to North London on Saturday still searching for their first league win of the season, having twice led at home to Liverpool before a stoppage-time penalty earned the visitors a point. Matthias Jaissle's side backed that performance up with a 3-2 Carabao Cup win over West Bromwich Albion in midweek.
Newly-appointed captain Dan Burn remains out with ankle ligament damage, and Joelinton (groin) and Tino Livramento (calf) are also sidelined. William Osula is still nursing a foot injury and remains unavailable. New signing Bazoumana Toure scored against West Brom despite "feeling a bit of pain" during that match and is expected to be fit for Saturday.
Nico Gonzalez, unveiled to supporters as a £50 million signing from Manchester City before the West Brom win, could be handed his Newcastle debut, though that would likely mean either Lewis Miley or fellow new arrival Sean Steur making way.

Our Get German Football News 2026/27 Bundesliga Tactical Previews series continues with a look at VfB Stuttgart. Oh, Stuttgart. You adorable little red-striped menace. There was a time, not particularly long ago, when the author could approach the VfB section of these previews with a reassuringly familiar collection of questions. Who left? Who needs replacing? How much of Sebastian Hoeneß' latest carefully constructed football machine has the transfer market carried away in several large sacks? Last summer, amid approximately 546,789 Nick Woltemade stories and enough aborted transfer sagas to shorten one's life expectancy, the author eventually concluded that Stuttgart possessed a talented upper-table side but were "plainly NOT ***** le contenders". They responded by finishing fourth and qualifying for the Champions League again. So much for that.
Perhaps one should simply accept what Stuttgart have become. Hoeneß took over a relegation candidate in 2023 and somehow turned the whole operation into one of German football's most reliably entertaining success stories. The Pokal arrived. European football kept arriving. Champions League qualification has now arrived twice. At some point, the cute little comeback story stopped being cute because it kept happening. Unfortunately for everyone else, the club itself remains rather adorable. It helps that Stuttgart possess Deniz Undav, German football's resident clown prince and a man apparently determined to turn every mixed-zone interview into open-mic night. Keep him forever. Always give him a microphone afterward.
In previous summers, Hoeneß' principal task was figuring out how to replace what success had taken away. This time, most of the good stuff is still sitting right there in front of him. The largest tactical problem currently confronting the coach may simply be explaining to several very good professional footballers why eleven remains the maximum number permitted on the pitch. How terribly sad for him.
The author shall now inspect Hoeneß' overflowing toy box and attempt to work out how all the pieces fit.
The pleasant novelty here is that the personnel section does not begin with an autopsy. Stuttgart have retained the spine, secured Undav, and then spent aggressively to make an already strong squad even deeper. That does not mean the summer has been simple. Nübel's departure creates a goalkeeper succession, Pejcinovic and Sauer immediately alter attacking hierarchies, Prömel places pressure on the captain, and late interest in Demirovic and El Khannouss threatens to complicate what otherwise looks like unusually tidy work. Before Hoeneß can begin solving his luxury problems on the pitch, it is worth establishing exactly how many of them the transfer market has created.

RB Leipzig are reportedly closing in on the signing of Christopher Nkunku on loan, but the Frenchman may not be the only attacking player to arrive at the Bundesliga club before the transfer window closes.
According to Leipziger Volkszeitung, Leipzig could also make a move for Nick Woltemade.
The report claims that Woltemade is keen to leave Newcastle in search of more regular playing time and would be open to returning to the Bundesliga, where he has previously played for Werder Bremen and VfB Stuttgart.

Newcastle United are lining up a club-record bid for Borussia Dortmund's Felix Nmecha as the club seek a replacement for Bruno Guimaraes.
Guimaraes is closing in on a £75m transfer to ****** nal after the Newcastle captain requested to leave St James' Park for North London.

It's no secret how badly Bayern Munich wanted to sign Nick Woltemade, but there was a ceiling to what they were willing to pay in order to get him. Apparently, that ceiling was offensive to VfB Stuttgart chairman Alexander Wehrle.
According to a report from Goal, Wehrle took a "swipe" at Bayern Munich during the club's annual general meeting, addressing both transfer negotiations and fan support.
Speaking to club members, Wehrle revisited the high-profile transfer saga involving the striker. Despite rumors that Woltemade had previously settled on personal terms with the Bavarian giants, Bayern's valuation peaked at €60 million, considerably less than the selling price. Stuttgart held firm on their evaluation of at least €75 million for the attacker before eventually reaching an agreement with Newcastle United, who met, and exceeded, their asking price. Wehrle dismissed any notion that Stuttgart was acting out of spite towards Bayern, explaining that the financial proposal from Munich amounted to little more than "a ****** er pretzel."
The Stuttgart executive also took a direct jab at the atmosphere created by the traveling support from Munich. Reflecting on their DFB-Pokal final clash in May, Wehrle claimed that their supporters completely dominated the stadium, and that he couldn't hear any Bayern fans in attendance.
Stuttgart's firm negotiating stance ultimately secured a record fee from the Magpies. But on the other hand, Wehrle's cheeky comments regarding fan noise were clearly designed to rally the local faithful, after his statements were met with "thunderous applause."

Nicolò Tresoldi has been on the radar for several years now, rising through the youth ranks at Hannover 96, before a transfer to Club Brugge last season. After a monstrous season with the Belgian side, the German youth player is now on the list of several top clubs including Bundesliga sides, but now could be lured by another European league.
The Cagliari-born striker might not be able to resist the lure of the Italian capital, as the player has reportedly reached an agreement in principle with AS Roma for a contract which would last until 2031, as per Nicolò Schira. Reports indicate that he prefers a move to Roma over the bids received by Bundesliga sides.
Reports further indicate that Roma are now in talks to reach a deal with Club Brugge, asking 25 million euros. That price is seemingly a bargain for a 21-year-old striker who seems poised to breakout in a major way. Perhaps Tresoldi won’t continue his development but his performance last season was almost enough to earn a callup from Julian Nagelsmann for this summer’s World Cup.
Could a move to Italy cost Germany a young talented striker? With Nick Woltemade failing to reach expectations over the last year, could Tresoldi be the next German striker? Hopefully, Jürgen Klopp takes a strong look at Tresoldi as the time to earn his allegiance might be dwindling.

Germany’s 1-1 (3-4) loss on penalties to Paraguay shook Germany to its core. After a sluggish performance over 120 minutes against the massive underdogs, Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade missed their penalties to put Paraguay on the brink of progression. Manuel Neuer kept the last penalty and managed to just about keep Germany in the contest past the first five penalties, but it was clear the Germans had no idea who should take the next one. There was a round of discussion with multiple people refusing to take the pressure kick before center back Jonathan Tah shouldered responsibility and walked up to the penalty spot.
Unfortunately, the 30-year-old blazed the ball over the bar.
This tilted the shootout back in Paraguay’s favor and the next Paraguayan penalty taker, José Canales, did not let the opportunity go by, burying the ball in the top of the net to see Group D’s third placed team complete the miraculous upset.
After the match, Tah took full responsibility for the miss but also refused to stay down about it.
“To be honest, I felt good,” the Bayern Munich player told Sport1 (as captured by iMiaSanMia). “I wasn’t extremely nervous, which is what I actually thought I would be, but I didn’t hit it well. I would take one again next time. I think it’s important to take responsibility in difficult moments. That was something I specifically resolved to do for this tournament: to take responsibility – and that’s why I did it in that moment.”

The German media reacted with shock and condemnation after the four-time World champions were knocked out of the 2026 edition by Paraguay.
Germany have failed to reach the last-16 in any of the past three tournaments, haven't won a World Cup knockout game since the final in Rio de Janeiro in 2014.
Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, who at the age of 38 became the youngest coach in a World Cup knockout ⁠stage in 40 years, opted for an offensive line-up, giving his ⁠team's top scorer in the tournament, Deniz Undav, his first start.

Then three came in a flurry: Kai Havertz with a tame attempt, Nick Woltemade with a still tamer one and Jonathan Tah with his wild, skied effort the most crucial of the three before Jose Canale confirmed their fate.
The old stereotypes of Germany football, the Turniermannschaft with their menacing inexorableness, are being destroyed. An exit to Paraguay did not feel very German; but now a staple of the business end of tournaments have failed to make the last 16 of a third successive World Cup. Germany's last victory in a knockout tie remains the 2014 final.
Since then, they have lost, either over 90 minutes or on penalties, to Mexico, South Korea, ******* an, Ecuador and Paraguay, each a result that would have seemed unGerman. There had been pessimism about this week from some in the German footballing world: but in anticipation of a last-16 defeat to France in Philadelphia. Instead, it is Paraguay who head to Pennsylvania. German are off home.
For Julian Nagelsmann, while he said he would "love" to continue in the job, it is presumably to face unemployment. He has been stalked by Jurgen Klopp at this tournament, the spectre of a possible successor coming from the charismatic former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool manager, following his country on punditry duties.
The eventual verdict may be that Nagelsmann has flattered to deceive as the Bundestrainer. Germany have made spectacular starts to two tournaments under him, walloping Scotland 5-1 and Curacao 7-1 but then tailed off. A quarter-final appearance in Euro 2024 could have been a platform for progress. Now Nagelsmann, like Joachim Low and Hansi Flick before him, has become a manager with serious feats on his CV to struggle in a World Cup.

It marks another low point for a Germany side who have not won a World Cup knockout tie since winning the final in 2014. And though Nagelsmann ticked one box by getting his side out of the group stages for the first time since then, the 38-year-old will be under pressure as the internal investigation into this summer's performance begins.

Nick Woltemade was supposed to represent ambition. Newcastle paid £85 million for him last season, making him the most expensive signing in the club’s history. That sort of fee does not buy patience. It buys expectation, scrutiny and, fairly or not, a demand for immediate proof.
According to AS, Woltemade is now “on the market” after a difficult first campaign in England. The German striker, still only 24, has a contract until 2031, but Newcastle are reportedly prepared to consider his departure, with a €65 million asking price being discussed.
His numbers tell part of the story. Woltemade scored eight goals and provided three ****** ists in 33 Premier League matches. In the Champions League, he added one goal and one ****** ist across ten games. There were also contributions in the FA Cup and EFL Cup, yet not enough to transform perception.
AS report that Atlético Madrid are among the clubs monitoring the situation. That is significant because they wanted Woltemade before his rise at Werder Bremen, when his profile felt more like promise than pressure.
At 1.98m, Woltemade is an unusual forward. He has presence, reach and technical quality, but his Newcastle spell has shown how hard it can be for a striker to adjust when the price tag arrives before the rhythm does.

Despite having slipped down the pecking order in the German national team, Nick Woltemade remains optimistic about getting his special World Cup moment during the tournament.

Woltemade has been on the bench for Germany’s last two games – a 2-1 friendly win over the USA and a 7-1 World Cup opening victory over Curacao – but remains positive.
“This doesn’t unsettle me, I can deal with it. Overall, the past year has been crazy for me; it has changed my life,” said the Newcastle United forward.
“When I stood on the pitch with the whole team before the match against Curacao and we sang the anthem, I was smiling from ear to ear because it is so big and beautiful to be part of the biggest stage in football.”

Getting as much as possible out of Nick Woltemade has been debated on BBC Radio Newcastle, with the Germany international having been used as both a striker and an attacking midfielder in his debut Premier League season.
Magpies supporter Martin told Total Sport's Simon Pryde: "If I was in Eddie Howe's shoes, I would be looking at the fact that I've got a player there who is not particularly happy with the way I'm playing him and asking him where do you want to play.
"I'd be talking to Julian Nagelsmann, his Germany manager and his previous manager [Stuttgart boss Sebastian Hoeness]."
