Under IRC Section 77, farmers can elect to report CCC loan proceeds as Schedule F income, triggering Social Security earnings even without selling a crop.
In 2026, net farm profit above $24,480 costs pre-retirement-age farmers $1 in Social Security benefits for every $2 earned over the limit.
The Section 77 election binds future years too, so farmers should compare tax outcomes and review their earnings history before committing.

Picture a Midwestern grain farmer with bins full of corn and prices too weak to tempt him into selling. Storage is already paid for, so he pledges the crop as collateral for a USDA Commodity Credit Corporation loan and keeps the grain in the bin. Cash arrives, but no customer has bought a bushel.

US stocks moderated their slide on Tuesday morning as uncertainty around the war in Iran, a bond market sell-off, and speculation about the Fed's next interest rate move kept buyers on the sidelines.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) recovered to a loss of roughly 0.1% after initially falling by 0.7%, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) lost 0.3%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) was down by roughly 0.7% after initially dropping 1.3% after stocks closed August with solid gains.
Stocks entered September with double-digit year-to-date returns and earnings expectations that continue to rise. However, volatile oil prices and the potential return of Fed rate hikes have given investors reason to worry heading into the historically weakest month for stocks.
US bond yields continued their march higher on Tuesday, with the 10-year yield (^TNX) rising to 4.75%, its highest intraday level since January 2025, before ticking down to 4.76%. The 30-year (^TYX) climbed to 5.27%, hovering near multi-decade highs, before also pulling back to 5.24%.
Crude oil prices also remained elevated after the US and Iran returned to a hot war, with Brent futures (BZ=F), the global benchmark, trading above $92 per barrel. According to Bloomberg, two oil tankers were struck while attempting to exit the Strait of Hormuz in the latest sign that the conflict could reescalate.

Microsoft's $678 billion commercial backlog and Azure's explosive growth underpin a $590 price target implying 22% upside.
MSFT's $332 billion in recurring revenue tops NVDA's total, while GOOGL trades cheaper at a forward P/E of 17 versus MSFT's 24.
Act now: the **** yst who called NVIDIA in 2010 just named his top 10 AI stocks — and Microsoft didn't make the cut. Grab the names FREE today.
Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) has spent the last year alongside NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) as the two poster children of the AI trade. But Microsoft has one thing Nvidia does not: a $678 billion contracted commercial backlog that turns AI demand into recurring, subscription-grade revenue.
Our 24/7 Wall St. price target for Microsoft is $590.43, and that backlog is a big reason the model sees room to run.

The second-quarter 13F from Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKA)(NYSE:BRKB) reached the SEC on Aug. 14, and it shows what CEO Greg Abel did with the conglomerate's $299 billion U.S. stock portfolio during his second full quarter running the company. Much of the portfolio sat still: Apple, American Express, and Coca-Cola -- three of the four biggest positions -- didn't move by a share. And the filing's largest addition, about $17 billion of Alphabet, extended a purchase Alphabet had already disclosed back in June.
The new information sat in two smaller lines. Berkshire cut its Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) stake by about 30.2 million shares, a reduction of 5.9% worth about $1.7 billion at quarter-end prices. That was the largest dollar amount Berkshire subtracted from any position.

And it added about 17.5 million shares of Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL), growing that stake 44% to 57.3 million shares, worth about $5.4 billion at the end of June.

Management attributed the return to 3% organic sales growth to the 'Beauty Reimagined' strategy, which shifted the company toward a faster, more agile, and consumer-centric operating model.
Operating margin expansion of 320 basis points was driven by the Profit Recovery and Growth Plan (PRGP), which successfully streamlined fixed costs and reduced organizational layers to increase accountability.
Growth was highly diversified across the portfolio, with Jo Malone London and TOM FORD joining the billion-dollar brand club alongside established leaders like La Mer and Clinique.
The company successfully stabilized its Makeup segment, improving organic sales trends by 500 basis points through targeted innovation in lip franchises and expansion into high-growth social commerce channels.

Perhaps the most important stock in the entire market, given its importance to the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, Nvidia's (NVDA) results are a quarterly thing to behold.
That's not because there's really any chance Nvidia misses its numbers. This is a company investors have become pretty darn comfortable in projecting a beat and raise every time.

On August 11, QumulusAI (NASDAQ:QMLS), a neocloud infrastructure provider, signed a GPU-as-a-Service agreement with DRW, a diversified global trading firm, to supply a dedicated Nvidia Blackwell B300 cluster. The capacity will be served from QumulusAI's U.S. data center footprint, carrying an initial one-year term and three one-year renewal options that could run up to four years in total.
The agreement follows a string of major AI infrastructure deals, pushing QMLS's total announced customer agreements past $246 million since early June. Previously on August 7, QumulusAI signed an agreement with an agentic hedge fund to provide Nvidia Blackwell GPU capacity. It also signed a $71.9 million, three-year agreement with an AI Inference platform provider to supply NVIDIA Blackwell B300 and B200 capacity.
These agreements signify a growing pipeline for QMLS that is supportive of management's fiscal 2026 targets. The company expects forward ARR of $300 million for fiscal year 2026 and approximately 30x growth in fiscal 2026 over fiscal 2025. This outlook is backed by executed contract revenue to date, expected renewals, deposit-backed compute capacity reservations and projected contract signings.
The particular DRW agreement in discussion expands QumulusAI's addressable markets beyond the current AI inference platforms that have driven much of its recent contract growth. DRW is the company's second financial-markets customer after the unnamed agentic hedge fund. Moreover, the deal signifies how QMLS is demonstrating that the demand for its GPU infrastructure spans across multiple customer categories.
The bear case here is that QMLS is yet to prove that it can execute on growth despite the strong flow of customer announcements. Particularly for the DRW agreement, the contract has an initial one-year term while the rest of the three years depend on annual renewals.

For the past decade, Brian and Rose Armstrong have been full-time caregivers for their grandson, now 11.
The financial toll on their retirement savings is a grim reality for the 66-year-old Mount Laurel, N.J., residents, who retired two years ago.
Folks like the Armstrongs, who are caregiving for an aging parent, spouse, or other family member, face greater financial strain, lower retirement confidence, and more worry about the future — and millions of people are in that boat.
A staggering 63 million Americans — nearly 1 in 4 adults — provide unpaid care to an adult with health or functional needs or to a child with a serious medical condition or disability, according to AARP. That's up from 53 million in 2020.
People often have little choice, but there are financial repercussions for retirement — especially one that can span three decades or more.
