The Los Angeles Rams closed out the 2026 preseason with a win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday and can now look ahead to the regular season. Problem is, they still don't know whether their eight-time All-Pro is coming out of retirement.
The Aaron Donald situation remains "up in the air" with less than two weeks until the Rams take on the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1, Sean McVay said Thursday, per Pro Football Talk.
"I think all of those things are up in the air," McVay said. "I wish I had a little bit better ability to give you some clarity, but it's really one of those deals that, what we're doing we're focusing on this football team. Aaron knows that if he wants to be able to do that, that's something that we absolutely want to be able to entertain and figure out, and that's really all there is to it right now."
Donald, now 35, hasn't played since the 2023 season, but has flirted with coming out of retirement in 2026. Donald went so far as to attend a "tryout" with the Rams. That, apparently, went very well, with McVay saying the former All-Pro "looked outstanding."
Since then, there have been no new updates on Donald's status. With time running out, Donald will need to make a decision soon on whether he'll put his pads on one more time in pursuit of another championship.

Ben Roethlisberger's arm ligaments turned al dente sometime around 2019. The Pittsburgh Steelers' defense behind him remained strong. That juxtaposition created the broken path that leads us to 2026. That's the year where the Steelers, in a league where most teams will have only two quarterbacks on their active roster, plan to keep four passers at the 53-man cutdown day.
That's what first-year head coach Mike McCarthy told ESPN's Brooke Pryor to expect when rosters as finalized August 30 at 6 p.m. ET. His QB1 will be a soon-to-be 43-year-old Aaron Rodgers, heavily diminished from his MVP peak. His veteran backup will be Mason Rudolph, exiled to Nashville in 2024 to bring his special brand of underwhelming football to the Tennessee ***** ans before reuniting with the team last year. Behind them, for now, is the duo of mid-round draft picks Pittsburgh picked up as lottery tickets in hopes they may have dug a diamond from a coal mine: Will Howard (sixth round, 2026) and Drew Allar (third round, 2026).
The need for four quarterbacks can be traced back to the end of the Roethlisberger era. This team was too competent to fall to a top 10 draft pick as the two-time Super Bowl champion's arm weakened and his average target distance dropped to league lows. Stopgap solutions followed; Mitchell Trubisky. Kenny Pickett. Rudolph. Russell Wilson. Justin Fields. Now, it's Rodgers.
When Pickett, the first quarterback selected in one of the worst quarterback drafts of all time, failed, the Steelers bought in to retread passers just good enough to keep the team at slightly above average. Playoff appearances followed. Playoff wins did not. Between weak draft position and the franchise's general distaste for big free agent splashes -- missing out on Kirk Cousins (good!) and Sam Darnold (not as good!) -- Pittsburgh went from renting to owning its place in contender's limbo.
2026 has marked the franchise's desire to stay there. Mike Tomlin, architect of zero losing seasons in 19 years at the helm, parted ways with the team. Rather than start fresh with a rising young head coach, the team hired Mike McCarthy, a man with a 126-80-2 record in the regular season since 2011 and a 6-9 playoff record. It brought back Rodgers, who can no longer use his legs to extend plays and has been forced into a diet of short, quick passes to avoid pressure even as his otherworldly arm talent remains in flashes of "remember when?" And, importantly, rather than casting his lot with Howard and Allar in case of injury and letting the chips fall where they may, McCarthy is keeping Rudolph as QB2.

Aaron Glenn wants his defense to play fast, physical, and aggressive. He also wants it to play smart. Through two preseason games, the New York Jets appear to be striking that balance.
The Jets have committed only two penalties as a team so far this preseason, a notable achievement for a roster filled with young players competing for jobs. Even more impressive is what has happened in the secondary. According to Michael Nania, New York is one of only two NFL teams whose defensive backs have yet to be flagged. The Minnesota Vikings are the only other team that can make that claim.
That's an encouraging development for a coaching staff led by defensive coordinator Brian Duker, defensive backs coach/pass game coordinator Chris Harris, and safeties coach Ryan Slowik. The clean play has accompanied productive results. The Jets' defense shut out the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2 of the preseason and recorded two interceptions.
After struggling to generate takeaways at times last season, the early ball production has been a welcome sight. Of course, preseason statistics come with the usual disclaimers. The games don't count, and the competition is often inconsistent.
Still, disciplined football travels. Glenn has consistently spoken about accountability and controlled chaos since arriving in New York. Through two preseason games, the Jets' secondary appears to be embracing both concepts. That's a positive sign with the regular season quickly approaching.

Félix Bautista delivered a clean inning in his second rehab appearance (first at Triple-A). Bautista shook off the rust from his first outing and generated a ground out, strikeout, and fly out. His sinker topped out at 97 MPH.
Bautista entered after starter Trey Gibson threw four innings of two-run ball. Gibson allowed four hits, struck out four, and did not hand out a free pass.
Albert Suárez returned to Norfolk with a fresh minor league deal. Big Al tossed 2.1 innings of bulk relief. He allowed an unearned run and struck out three.
Norfolk trailed 3-2 before scoring in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings. Enrique Bradfield Jr. tied the game with a single in the seventh, José Barrero gave the Tides the lead with a solo homer in the eighth, and Jeremiah Jackson drove in a crucial insurance run with a base hit in the ninth. Bradfield Jr. finished 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot, and Jackson went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.
Heston Kjerstad doubled and took a walk. Aaron Noda walked twice and launched a solo home run in the top of the second. Creed Willems ended the day 0-for-5 with three strikeouts.

On-road diesel prices hit the high $5.60s this week, and the culprit is not crude oil — which has been hovering in the $80s — but a refining capacity crunch that has sent crack spreads above $100 per barrel, well beyond their typical $15–$25 range, said Aaron Decker, partner and chief executive officer of Multi-Service Fuel Card.
"It's not necessarily a crude issue or a crude crisis," Decker said. "We're not in a crude crisis, we're in a refining crisis." Ultra-low distillate inventories have fallen to levels not seen since the early 2000s, and even the late 1990s, he added — a signal he called "really troubling."
Several forces are compounding the supply squeeze. Ukrainian drone strikes have taken out Russian refineries that were previously helping backfill global shortfalls. U.S. Gulf Coast diesel exports are running elevated as domestic refiners supply shortage-stricken markets overseas, which simultaneously tightens American supply and consumes domestic refining capacity. Decker said a weekly government report tracking Hormuz tanker traffic, Russian refinery runs, and U.S. distillate inventories are the three indicators he watches most closely.
"I don't anticipate this getting better in the very near future. I anticipate, and I think the EIA agrees with that, they adjusted their forecast from where they were at the beginning of the year to how things stand now. The Rams still don't know whether Aaron Donald will be on their team this season.
Rams head coach Sean McVay said after Thursday night's preseason finale that he can't answer anything about whether adding Donald to the roster would be a quick process, whether there will be issues with his contract, or anything else, because he simply doesn't know what Donald's decision will be.
"I think all of those things are up in the air," McVay said. Over the summer, the basketball world sadly lost a legendary figure. Former NBA player, coach and Hall of Famer Don Nelson passed away at the age of 86-years-old in early August. The former Iowa Hawkeye went on to coach a total of 31 seasons in the NBA, including two stints with the Warriors over 11 seasons. Prior to joining the Warriors bench, Nelson coached 10 seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks.
Nelson then joined the Warriors in 1988, leading Golden State to the postseason behind Chris Mullin, Mitch Richmond and Tim Hardaway. The first episode will debut on ESPN's network on October 8 at 6 p.m. ET, with the remaining five episodes airing throughout October and early November.

Adam Schefter has spent much of the offseason predicting Aaron Donald will return to the Los Angeles Rams. But on Wednesday's Pat McAfee Show, he sounded less certain — and more focused on the clock running out.
With the Rams set to open the season in two and a half weeks against the San Francisco 49ers in Australia, Schefter said the timeline for Donald to make a call is closing fast.
"These people know it's go time. Like two and a half weeks, time to start getting ready, which, again, makes me wonder what's going through the mind of one Aaron Donald right now as we get closer to the regular season," Schefter said. "I would think that he's probably getting close to making a decision at some point here. 'Cause either you're gonna do it or you're not gonna do it. We're at the point now where, like, you're coming back or you're not coming back. Does your body feel like it can handle it, or does your body feel like it can't handle it? What are we doing here? One way or the other, right?"
The comments mark a shift in tone from Schefter's earlier reporting. In June, he called a Donald return "more likely than not," and by early July he was noting momentum building around the idea after the Rams acquired Myles Garrett from Cleveland. Donald was later seen working out at the team's facility, and has had multiple workouts with the Rams during training camp.
Donald hasn't played since the Rams' 2024 playoff loss to Detroit. He made first-team All-Pro in that final season, logging eight sacks while playing more than 80% of Los Angeles' defensive snaps — hardly the profile of a player in decline. He's now 35 and would be more than two years removed from live game action if he suits up in Week 1.

Seven weeks ago, Victor Wembanyama did his franchise a favor. The 22-year-old center and the Spurs agreed to a massive five-year contract extension, albeit one that will pay him about $50 million less than he might have received if he sought the largest contract allowed by the NBA.
The significance of that discount can be hard to process. After all, to a hard-working stiff, the gap between making $252 million and $303 million is a lot like the gap between taking a rocket ship to the moon and one to Mars. Most of us recognize there's a difference, but we'll never come close to experiencing it firsthand.
In the realm of NBA team-building, though, salary-cap savings of $10 million per year can turn losses into victories. Theoretically, signing Wembanyama at that lower price point could enable the Spurs to add an extra veteran once extensions for Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper kick in. It might allow them to keep De'Aaron Fox an extra year.
And if the Spurs play their cards right? Playoff trips that might otherwise have ended in the conference semifinals in 2028, 2029 or 2030 might turn into league championships, all because they had a little more flexibility to operate under the NBA's punitive luxury-tax aprons.
So it's possible to see how Wembanyama's sacrifice might pay off. In fact, they just lost in the NBA Finals to a New York Knicks team that benefited from a similar contract discount by their star player, Jalen Brunson.

Aaron Judge has missed most of the season, but the New York Yankees are close to getting him back in the lineup.
Judge has been recovering from a fractured rib and has not played since May 31. He has started taking swings, but has yet to face velocity. However, he hopes to avoid a rehab ****** ignment before returning.
"I didn't rehab in '23 when I missed probably the same amount of time," Judge told MLB.com's Bryan Hoch on Thursday. "Why waste at-bats? Why waste anything down in a Minor League game? I've been doing this for a while now, and I've got a sense of what I need to do on the field and how to manage it."
Judge is a three-time MVP, and he should not need much time to get his timing back. Live batting practice and the Trajekt machine should provide him with enough at-bats against velocity for him to get back in the lineup without needing a rehab ****** ignment.

The Yankees announced a handful of roster moves prior to Wednesday night's game against the Houston Astros, highlighted by placing reliever Fernando Cruz on the 15-day IL.

The San Francisco 49ers are adding reinforcements on their defensive line before their preseason finale vs. the Las Vegas Raiders.
According to KPRC2's Aaron Wilson, the 49ers and edge rusher Jah Joyner agreed to a deal that will bring Joyner to the Bay Area for the final few days of the 49ers' preseason. Joyner tried out for the 49ers on Wednesday. There's no word yet on a corresponding move which the 49ers will have to make to keep their roster at the 90-player limit.
San Francisco is thin at defensive end with Nick Bosa sidelined by knee tendinitis and rookie Romello Height working through an ankle issue. If the 49ers are going to rest players that figure to be key contributors on their 90-man roster, they may be even thinner Thursday night when they take on the Las Vegas Raiders. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if both Keion White and Sam Okuayinonu were among the players not suiting up for the 49ers.
This marks the second defensive end the 49ers have added in the final week of the preseason. They also signed former Dallas Cowboys fourth-round pick Viliami Fehoko. Joyner will get Thursday's game, and then as many as three practices to make his case to stick around as a practice squad candidate.
Joyner is with the UFL's Houston Gamblers after being released by the Dallas Renegades in March. His only NFL experience came last offseason with the Las Vegas Raiders where he landed as an undrafted free agent following the 2025 draft. He was let go at final cuts and never signed to another NFL club.

Harry and Meghan are preparing for a major change in their family routine after six years in California. However, their move across the Atlantic does not mean they are cutting ties with the US. Their Montecito mansion will remain, along with the chicken coop that became an unexpected symbol of Meghan's post-royal life.
"There has been plenty of joking about 'Eggxit' because the chickens became such a recognizable part of Meghan's California life," the source claimed to RadarOnline. "They featured prominently in the image she created after leaving Britain, so there is an obvious irony that the family is heading back to the UK while the chickens stay behind."
Meghan reportedly remains very attached to the chickens, but moving them across the Atlantic was never a realistic option. Another insider said the birds will stay at the Montecito home and continue to receive proper care.
Harry and Meghan originally rescued 10 hens from a commercial farm in California. Their neighbor, Ellen DeGeneres, later gave them another chicken. The birds also appeared during the couple's famous interview with Oprah Winfrey and later featured in one of Meghan's Netflix projects. The family even gave their chicken coop a personal name, "Archie's Chick Inn," after their son, Prince Archie.

The Mariners brought a dumper to a duel.
George Kirby outpitched Aaron Nola on Tuesday in the Mariners electric 4-1 win over the Phillies. Kirby struck out nine over 7 2/3 innings and turned in his best outing of the year. Cal Raleigh smacked another homer, giving him four on the series. And the rest of the lineup scratched and clawed a few more runs late to give the Mariners an impressive, all around, and fun win. That's back-to-back series victories over the top two Wild Card teams in the National League.
It's been a weird season for Kirby, something I feel I've written a dozen times in the last five months. He's walked a lot of batters (relative to himself) and struck out very few (relative to everyone). He survived the early part of the season by keeping the ball on the ground, but that's no longer the case and he's since been getting crushed. He's often seemed to nibble at the edges of the zone, unable to get chase out of it, and unable to get whiffs in it. He gave up 11 runs in his last two starts, making early exits in both.
But Kirby on Tuesday looked like the near-ace level pitcher of the past. He attacked the zone relentlessly with his four-seamer, ripping upper-90s fastballs with his best velocity of the season (97.9 mph). When he did expand the zone with the slow and bendy stuff, he got chase 49% of the time. Kirby generated 21 whiffs on Tuesday — the second most in a game for his career. He was aggressive, sharp, and borderline unhittable.
It was obvious right from the jump that something was special for Kirby. He led off the game throwing three pretty much middle-middle fastballs to Kyle Schwarber, each greater than 98 mph, and Schwarber swung through them all. "I knew I had it today," Kirby said of the four-seamer after the game. He then got ahead of Trea Turner with a few more fastballs registering 99 mph, before finishing him off with devastating sweeper away.

SEATTLE (AP) — Cal Raleigh tied a team record with homers in four straight at-bats, George Kirby pitched one-run ball into the eighth inning and Seattle Mariners beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 on Tuesday night.
Raleigh led off the second inning against Philadelphia's Aaron Nola with a 362-foot shot to right field for his 18th homer of the season. It was his first time up after also homering in all three of his at-bats in a 9-2 win against the Phillies on Monday, matching the Seattle record of homers in four consecutive at-bats set by Mike Cameron on May 2, 2002.
Kirby (9-10) gave up one run on four hits and struck out nine in 7 2/3 innings. Jose Ferrer got the last out in the eighth and Andrés Muñoz pitched the ninth for his 24 save in 32 chances.
Nola (5-10) got the loss, allowing two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts over six innings.
Kirby was coming off a couple of tough outings, including giving up six first-inning runs in his last start against the Brewers. It looked as if he might be in trouble again when he allowed three straight singles in the second inning, including an RBI hit by Justin Crawford. Instead, Kirby got out of the jam and cruised the rest of the way.
