Spanish World Cup-winner Juan Mata on Friday opted against playing another season with Australian side Melbourne Victory, but stopped short of calling time on his career.
The former Manchester United and Chelsea ace has enjoyed a late-career resurgence and was voted the domestic A-League player of the year in 2025-26.
But the 38-year-old has decided not to play on at the club as he mulls "the next steps in his career".
He will remain involved with the Australian side after taking an ownership stake.
"I loved every minute and so greatly enjoyed everything that we achieved last season, falling back in love with football at such a special place, in an amazing city that it was a privilege to call home," Mata said.

Alphabet Inc.'s (NASDAQ:GOOGL) business keeps growing fast as more companies sign up for its cloud infrastructure. In the second quarter, total revenue hit nearly $120 billion. Google Cloud was the main driver behind this growth, as its sales surged 82%, turning it into a major profit source along with core businesses like YouTube. Alphabet leads the global online media market and is steadily expanding Waymo's driverless taxi service. Despite these strengths, the stock trades at roughly 17 times earnings around Cramer's commentary. That multiple is unusually low and understates the valuation of the company's underlying operations.
At the same time, there is a reasonable case for caution due to massive spending. Capital expenditures reached nearly $45 billion in Q2 alone as Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) spends aggressively on data centers and AI hardware. If making money from AI takes longer than planned, this heavy investment could hurt short-term cash flow and profit margins. As one of the NFL's best defenders over the last decade or so, we didn't get to see much of Nick Bosa in 2025. The San Francisco 49ers star pass-rusher tore his ACL in the third game of last season. This injury obviously ended his campaign extremely early and what could've been a bid for his second career Defensive Player of the Year award.
It doesn't seem like that ACL tear will affect Bosa's availability in any meaningful way in 2026.
As 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris clarified earlier this week, Bosa will, in fact, play against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on Thursday. The best part for the 49ers? Bosa doesn't appear to have any meaningful limitations. Because Bosa tore his ACL in Week 3 of last year, he's basically had almost a calendar year to recover and train back to 100 percent. He will be full go as he tries to make Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford's life a living ****** .
That is, to put it lightly, amazing news for a San Francisco team that has been ravaged by injuries over the last couple of years:
Of course, Bosa's potential impact, at least from the outset, might be a different story. This is the second time in Bosa's career that he has torn an ACL (albeit not the same one twice). Bosa is still just 28 years old, but it's hard not to imagine him potentially taking some time to knock off some rust now that he's torn one of the most important athletic ligaments in both of his knees.

In the second quarter, Palantir delivered 93% revenue growth to $1.94 billion, while adjusted (non-GAAP) earnings per share grew 156% to $0.41. Both figures handily beat ****** yst expectations. This amazing growth marked a stunning acceleration from the 48% revenue growth in the year-ago quarter and the 85% growth in the first quarter of 2026. Another impressive metric was profitability, as adjusted free cash flow margins expanded to a massive 63% -- among the highest in the industry.

When the New York Giants declined to pick up the fifth-year option of cornerback Deonte Banks earlier this year, it seemed like the beginning of the end for the embattled 2023 first-round pick.
But these aren't the Giants we've become accustomed to over the past 12 years. Failure is no longer in their vocabulary and will no longer be acceptable under new head coach John Harbaugh.
The Giants didn't pick up Banks' option because he hadn't earned it. His declining performance over the past two seasons didn't warrant the $12.63 million extension, but they weren't giving up on him. Banks would get a chance to get back into the good graces of the team with a solid offseason and training camp.
That has happened. Banks has worked hard and taken the advice the new coaching staff has been giving him. He appears to be not only a different player, but the player the Giants hoped they were getting when they traded three draft picks to move up one spot in the order to select him three years ago.
"Tae has been amazing just in his press coverage, very strong, very physical, a cerebral player," teammate Greg Newsome II said last week.

The reigning Celebration Bowl champs may only be two games into their 2026 season but they've also done a great job at showing why last year's HBCU National Championship was no fluke. Chennis Berry has built a dominant program top-to-bottom over in Orangeburg; a team that doesn't take losing well and doesn't do a whole lot of it to begin with. South Carolina State, now 2-0, appears to be steamrolling towards another stellar season. Another MEAC ***** le and trip to Atlanta may be waiting down the road and, while of course the work to get there will be difficult, there can be no debating that the Bulldogs are the top of the mountain in HBCU football at this very moment.
SC State came out of the gates blazing hot with a 87-0 victory over Savannah State (Berry's alma mater). In that game they were about as finely tuned a machine as you can get in all three phases. They racked up 627 offensive yards and amazingly enough not one individual player had more than 100 on their own in any singular category. Josh Shaw ran for three scores in that game and it wasn't even half of the total rushing touchdowns they had that day. Keely Watson completed eight passes and nearly half of those went for TDs as well. On the other side 29 different defenders logged at least one stop and three of them were responsible for takeaways. Just to stamp it they got a blocked punt returned for a score as well.
Division II opponent or not, that's the type of performance that just can't be ignored and it was followed up by another smothering performance against Florida A&M on Sunday in the Orange Blossom Classic. Down in Miami the Bulldogs steamrolled again in their 31-13 victory. The defense in particular was lights out as they held the Rattlers to -1 rushing yards. Yes, negative rushing yards for the whole game as well as a mere 4-for-17 on third down. Had it not been for a flurry of penalties, SC State could have won by a heck of a lot more.
The roster is brimming with talent and it starts with running back Mason Pickett-Hicks who is averaging 156.5 yards per game. Pickett-Hicks ran for 210 yards against FAMU last weekend and was essentially unstoppable on his 17 rush attempts. He found the end zone twice and was named the MEAC Offensive Player of the Week. SC State also boasted the conference's Defensive Player of the Week with junior defensive lineman Jordan Dollard. Dollard was a game-wrecker on Sunday, posting 4.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He had six stops total.
Those two are just a few of the playmakers the Bulldogs have at their disposal. Front to back Berry's team is loaded and, although the sample size has been small, it certainly seems like they are again the team to beat. Who, if anyone, might be able to do it?

CHICAGO — The second volleyball match Sunday night at Wrigley Field in the SEC-Big Ten Challenge was suspended because of excessive moisture on the court.
The decision was made to prevent injuries after players slipped several times on the wet surface.
With a sellout crowd of 43,067 energized for the first volleyball event at the iconic home of the Chicago Cubs, third-ranked Kentucky beat No. 11 Penn State in four sets in the opening match — just an appetizer for fans of the top-ranked Huskers, who filled nearly all of the seats at Wrigley.
Ideal conditions — or so it seemed — awaited Nebraska and Missouri. But the first set was stopped for more than 15 minutes after 2 points. Players from both teams dried the TeraFlex floor with towels as the humidity levels of a 72-degree night pushed past 80 percent.
"This was amazing," Nebraska coach Dani Busboom Kelly said. "I applaud the effort. But there's a reason our sport's indoors."

The American men are making a real run at ending their lengthy Grand Slam drought.
The U.S. hasn't had a men's major champion since Andy Roddick won in Flushing Meadows in 2003, and there haven't even been many great opportunities in the more than two decades since.
But backed by the home crowd and in good form, the Americans had five players in the final 16 of a major for the first time since 1995 and will be a real threat in the second week of the final Grand Slam tournament of the season.
"We play so much outside of the States obviously, a lot of time in Europe," Tiafoe said. "This sport's so international, so to be able to play in front of friends, family, loved ones, is amazing. They don't get to see you much, so you want to put on a show."

In recent years, the Philadelphia Phillies' farm system has received some scathing remarks, as it's been called one of the weaker farm systems in baseball.
Routinely, the Phillies have one of MLB's lowest-ranked farm systems. It's not just because of the prospects they're trading away, but the ones they currently have in the system aren't viewed highly around baseball.
Dave Dombrowski, president of baseball operations, is pushing back against that narrative. USA Today's Bob Nightengale shared a comment from Dombrowski, who pushed back against the criticism levied against the Phillies' farm system.
"We could have traded for anybody at the deadline if we had given up more prospects," Dombrowski said. "Some guys, we chose not to trade. What's amazing is that people criticize our farm system, but we've had [Justin] Crawford come up. We've had [Andrew] Painter come up. We've had Alex [McFarlane] come up. We've always had prospects to make trades. The reality is that I've never been in a spot where I couldn't make a trade because of prospects."

It's been roughly three months since the New York Knicks became champions of the basketball world. For the first time in 53 years, and after long stretches of misery, the franchise finally reached the pinnacle of success, but the journey was not easy.
In fact, throughout the playoffs, the Knicks found themselves down big on several occasions, only to mount amazing comebacks that defined their run. Recently, Knicks swingman Mikal Bridges spoke about the comebacks and the conditions that made it possible to survive overwhelming odds.
"The Cavs series, that Game 1, being down 22 in the 4th. Last year in the playoffs, being down a lot," said Bridges in a chat with Men's Health. "We had opportunities where we had been in the same situations and succeeded. It's having that faith of being here before. Obviously, it's different being in the Finals than any other playoff series, but it's still just another game. It's just having that belief and taking it one possession at a time; we've been here before, we've done it before. Ain't gonna get it back in one possession, still a lot of time left. A lot of us have been in the league for a long time, and we know in this day and age, with the fast pace and a lot of threes, that even down 27 points at halftime, you still have a lot of time. And being at home, having the crowd behind your back, it's gonna put pressure on them."
The Knicks went 53-29 in the 2025-26 season, and most critics had them a tier below the Cavaliers, Celtics, and Pistons in the East. In the playoffs, however, the Knicks dominated the field, going 16-3 in an impressive performance. Along the way, they faced fierce resistance, overcoming a 22-point deficit in the opening game against the Cavaliers.
Their unlikeliest win, however, was in the Finals. In Game 4 of the series, the Knicks went down by as much as 29 points, but somehow came back and won (107-106) off a buzzer-beater from OG Anunoby. It seemed impossible at the time, but the Knicks always felt that victory was within reach.

Zac Thornton entered today's game with a 2.93 ERA in 11 starts. It's been quite the surprising season for the rookie lefty, who has managed those impressive topline numbers despite boasting less than flashy stuff and underlying peripherals. Alas, those topline numbers look a little bit worse after today's game, as Thornton underwent his worst start as a major leaguer, and the Mets were not able to work themselves out of the hole he put them in, resulting in a 9-5 loss to the Giants.
San Francisco struck within minutes of the game's start, as Rafael Devers socked Thornton's fourth pitch of the afternoon over the right field wall for a one-out solo homer. The Mets answered back in the bottom of the second when A.J. Ewing—who has been struggling mightily in the second-half—socked a two-out, two-run homer off Giants starter Anthony Molina. That gave the Amazins a 2-1 lead, but unfortunately they would not hold it for long. Thornton surrendered a lead-off single in the third inning, followed by a two-run blast to Christian Koss to put the Giants back in front.
Thornton went on to retire his next eight batters, right up until Koss—who entered today's game with just one homer this season—came to the plate again in the top of the fifth, and he hit his second home run of the afternoon. Not to be outdone, Devers came up two batters later following a single and socked his second home run of the day. Thornton surrendered one hit—a double from Bryce Eldridge, the fourth straight two-out hit of the inning—before finally retiring the Giants, but it was now a 6-2 ballgame.
Meanwhile, the Mets's bats did little against Molina after Ewing's homer (that hit in fact remained the only one surrendered by the Giants through six innings). Both teams went to their bullpens in the sixth inning—albeit with Molina's final line looking a lot better than Thornton's ugly one (5 innings, 7 hits, 1 walk, 6 strikeouts, 6 runs). Chris Devenski was the first reliever up for the Mets, and he did his job by tossing two scoreless innings. The bats finally got something going in the bottom of the seventh, when two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out. Francisco Alvarez struck out swinging for the second out, but the Mets then finally got another run on the board when Brett Baty walked to bring in a run and make it 6-3. Alas, the potential tying run was stranded, as Francisco Lindor grounded out to first to end the threat.
And the Giants quickly acted to make sure the Mets would not continue to claw their way back into the game. Jefry Yan took the mound in the top of the eighth and issued a one-out walk to Eldridge, followed by a two-run homer from Osleivis Basabe. That made it 8-3, but San Francisco still wasn't quite done. Justin Hagenman pitched the ninth, and just like every non-Devenski Mets pitcher of the day, he surrendered a homer—this one a one-out solo shot for Grant McCray. That made it six dingers for the Giants, in case you weren't keeping count.

Cathy Engelbert is stepping down as WNBA commissioner, ending a polarizing tenure that saw the league grow exponentially under her watch but also raised questions about her ability to lead it through its era of increased scrutiny and attention.
Engelbert has informed the league of her decision to retire, effective at the end of this year, it was announced today by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
"Cathy has presided over the WNBA through the most significant period of growth in the league's 30-year history," said Silver. "We are grateful for Cathy's leadership and unwavering commitment to the advancement of women's basketball."
Engelbert, 61, has served as WNBA commissioner since May 2019. Previously, she worked at Deloitte for more than 30 years and was elevated to CEO of the company in 2015.
"After more than seven years at the WNBA and more than 40 total years in business, I have made the decision to retire as WNBA Commissioner," said Engelbert. Moritz Seider has had an amazing start to his career while wearing the winged wheel for Detroit. He has captivated fans with his elite defensive play, and he has become more involved on the offensive side of the puck every year. He just recorded his best season yet in Detroit, posting career marks in goals, ***** ists, and plus/minus rating: 10 goals, 50 ***** ists, 60 points and a plus-15 rating in all 82 games. He hasn't even reached his full potential yet, and he is already one of the franchise's centerpieces.
During his time in Detroit, he has also learned how to quarterback our power play and be a shutdown force during penalty-killing situations. He put up a career-high 28 power-play points last season and led Red Wings defensemen with 180 blocked shots. He is also one of the defensemen Detroit turns to in overtime. Over the last five seasons in Detroit, he has averaged 23:51 of ice time, and last season's career-best 25:40 a night was the heaviest workload he has carried yet. Not to mention that he has never missed a game in the entirety of his NHL career so far, a streak that now sits at 410 straight.
Seider will look to continue his dominance on the blue line this season, which carries major significance as the Wings look to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2015-16, after a 10th straight miss last spring. If Seider can maintain his superb career trajectory and the season he posted last year, Detroit's blue line and team will only get better. One statistic that really stands out is Seider's plus/minus rating. As Detroit's number one defenseman, Seider is regularly on the ice defending against the opposing team's top stars. Posting a plus-15 last season, his first positive rating in five NHL seasons, shows that he is one of the most valuable defensemen in today's NHL.
This is not hype or exaggeration of Seider's play; he is well respected by his peers and was just ranked as the ninth-best defenseman in the NHL right now by NHL Network, one spot behind Ottawa's Jake Sanderson, after finishing fifth in Norris Trophy voting. The USC Trojans got a lot of great news from their second official depth chart release of the season. Many stars will be returning and potentially making their season debut. The Trojans' defense and offense should get a big boost with key players coming back. Many freshmen will still be in position to have another big game against Fresno State.
Here is what we learned about the Trojans' depth chart release prior to Game 2:
Tanook Hines was the first receiver listed on the depth chart, and that bodes well for his availability for Game 2. Tanook Hines already has a great connection with Jayden Maiava, and I expect that to show up vs Fresno State. I would not be surprised if Lincoln Riley and Maiava look to him early and often in this game to ramp him up. The Trojans' offense will have some fireworks with Hines' season debut.
Sophomore Corey Sims showed great flashes of being a big weapon for Jayden Maiava in Game 1. He was amazing all camp and offseason, and in Game 1 everything came to fruition for him. English club cricketer and endurance athlete Sam Bodoano has completed an extraordinary 62-mile (100km) run from Lord's Cricket Ground in London to Valley End Cricket Club in Woking, Surrey, in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the longest run-up before bowling a cricket ball.

Bodoano, 22, from Worplesdon near Guildford, Surrey, began his run at Lord's on Saturday and completed the gruelling journey around 14 hours later at Valley End Cricket Club on Sunday. His challenge culminated in him bowling the opening delivery of an 11-a-side match to his father.
To meet the requirements for the record attempt, Bodoano had to complete the entire 100km journey in full cricket whites while carrying a cricket ball. He then had to take part in a cricket match and deliver the opening ball. While Bodoano has completed the challenge and believes he has surpassed the existing mark, Guinness World Records has not yet officially recognised the achievement. The organisation's evidence review and verification process is still under way.

A Guinness World Records spokesperson said the application would need to go through the formal evidence review process before the record could be officially confirmed. The review can take around two weeks, depending on the evidence submitted.

If confirmed, Bodoano's run-up would comfortably surpass the previous men's record of 15 miles. The current holder of the record for the longest bowling run-up (male) is Tom Dunn, who ran 15 miles (24km) from Bethnal Green, in east London, to Wandsworth Common, in south London, in August 2024.
Despite the physical demands of the challenge, Bodoano completed the run for a charitable cause, raising almost £6,000 (Rs 7,64,513) for The Ruth Strauss Foundation, a cancer charity founded by former England captain Sir Andrew Strauss.

"I'm very tired, I lost a lot of sleep, but it was all for an amazing cause," Bodoano said.

An experienced endurance athlete, Bodoano has previously competed in the England Hockey Men's Premier League, completed the London Marathon and Ironman Wales, and finished third in a 112-mile backyard ultra-marathon. He also works as a running coach and content creator.

After the Hercules: The Legendary Journeys actor, 67, traded Hollywood for the Sunshine State seven years ago, the MAGA supporter told Fox News in an interview Sunday that part of the reason he left California was that he was "canceled" due to his political beliefs as a conservative Christian — but he had other complaints too.
Sorbo told the right-wing outlet that although he misses the weather, his old house and his local golf course, three factors keep him from returning to the Golden State.
"I mean, here in Florida, yeah, we get five months of pretty high humidity," the Andromeda star acknowledged. "It's pretty hot, but the winters here are really quite amazing. But yeah, there are things I miss, but they can keep their taxes, they can keep their traffic, and they can keep their negativity, I'm done."
He went on to say that Florida has given him more "acceptance" since he relocated with his family.

In an Entertainment Weekly interview, the star of The Uprising spoke about his resurfaced comments from 2013 calling for a queer spin on Peter Parker, when he famously asked, "Why can't he be gay? Why can't he be into boys?"
"It was an exercise in rebellion that I felt passionate about," Garfield doubled down in his latest chat with the outlet. "I just still believe that anyone can be in that suit."
Garfield's first comments on Peter Parker's ****** uality came in the lead-up to his film The Amazing Spider-Man 2 landing in cinemas.
He reportedly ran the idea by director Marc Webb at the time, suggesting Michael B Jordan for the role of MJ and opining, "He's so charismatic and talented."
While Garfield was - and is - keen on this idea, Marvel reportedly was not. A leaked document found on WikiLeaks and reported by Gawker revealed a list of "character integrity obligations" shared by Marvel with Sony.

Sandra Bullock has revealed that her two children both made appearances in her latest film, Practical Magic 2.
The Oscar winner, who is typically guarded about her personal life, shared her pride with Access Hollywood.
"They're in the movie but not in an obvious way to you, not in an obvious way," Bullock told the outlet. "And so I can't wait to show them where it is. They don't know where it is."
The Ocean's 8 star said Louis, 16, and Laila, 12, were at the Hollywood premiere of the film with their friends, and that she was "unbelievably proud" of her children.

After an acclaimed All Out pay-per-view, AEW Dynamite returned on Wednesday, Sept. 2 with the fallout from the show in Allen, Texas. He says All In was amazing, thanks everyone who has been with him on his journey from the beginning and thanks everyone else for their support.

Ospreay says Kenny Omega has been the best wrestler in the world for the last 10 years and still is. Ospreay says Omega is better than him 364 days of the year, except for that one day. Ospreay says they're now tied at 2-2 as the crowd chants for one more match. He says he's satisfied with that record, but if Omega isn't, he can name a time and place to settle the score.

Ospreay starts naming past AEW World Champions, some of whom he says were his heroes. He says the reality is that he's now among all of them, and all of his idols are his rivals.

Ospreay questions his confidence but realizes he's now the standard in AEW.

Ospreay shouts out the United Empire and thanks them for helping him succeed. He says while there's a United Empire in ****** an, he's going to bring the United Empire to AEW.

As Ospreay readies to leave, Ricochet, Toa Liona and Bishop Kaun interrupt. Ricochet says Ospreay knows they have unfinished business and that they're forever intertwined. He also congratulates Ospreay and Omega on their match.

Ricochet understands the fans don't give him credit, but says Ospreay knows him better than they do. Ricochet says Ospreay would not have been in the All In main event without him, and he demands the first shot at the ****** le.

Gabe Kidd and Clark Connors interrupt, and Kidd says Ospreay took away his chances to become the first British IWGP Heavyweight Champion and AEW World Champion. Ricochet and Kidd trade words until they align and head to the ring to target Ospreay, but United Empire runs down to make the save. Ospreay says they can meet in the main event in a tag team match.

The Mets (63-77) took the rubber match of their three-game road series against the Tampa Bay Rays (83-56), 10-4 the final score.
-- The Amazins wasted no time taking an early lead over Rays right-handed starter Griffin Jax. Juan Soto reached base on a single up the middle, but was retired on a fielder's choice groundout by Bo Bichette. Carson Benge walked to put runners on first and second with two outs, and Jared Young capitalized with an RBI single. Tampa catcher Liam Hicks couldn't hold onto the ball when applying the late tag on Bichette, and the ball skittered away, the error allowing Benge to score and Young to move up to second base on the play as well. Marcus Semien added to the damage with a double down the left field line to bring Young across home plate, and the Mets were up 3-0.
-- The Mets engineered another two-out rally in the third inning. They loaded the bases after A.J. Ewing hustled out an infield single, and Brett Baty capitalized with a big opposite-field swing which ricocheted off the very top of the wall in left-center field, clearing the bases and knocking Jax out of the game.
-- 29-year-old righty Justin Hagenman was called on to make the start for the Mets on Wednesday, marking his first MLB appearance of the season. He threw 46 pitches, allowed two hits, walked one batter, and allowed one earned run while striking out two over three full innings.
-- Right-handed reliever Chris Devenski came in for Hagenman, and had a nightmare outing. After recording two outs in the fourth inning, Devenski unraveled, allowing three earned runs on three hits, including a two-run homer off the bat of Richie Palacios. Taylor Walls extended the inning with a double to force Mets interim skipper Andy Green to call on Dedniel Núñez to strand the runner in scoring position and hold the Mets' 6-4 lead.

LAS VEGAS – Silvestre Sanchez had the opportunity to show off his complete game on Dana White's Contender Series, but a UFC contract may have not come his way without a late finish.
Sanchez (10-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) earned a UFC contract by finishing Liam McCracken in the third round. A vicious left hook floored McCracken (8-2), making his entry into the promotion a sure thing. Without that punctuation mark in the closing round, UFC CEO Dana White said he may not have awarded a contract, despite Sanchez showing off stellar skills everywhere the fight went.
Luckily, the Mexico-born lightweight got the job done and will now have the opportunity to show more of what he can do under the bright lights of the UFC, and he hopes it means more fighters from his country will have an opportunity in the future.
"That was always a goal, to be here in the UFC since I started in mixed martial arts," Sanchez told MMA Junkie and other reporters through an interpreter during a post-fight news conference. "It's a dream come true, but also the start of hard work – and not just for myself, but also for Nayarit, because this opens the door for all the talent that's there. Maybe I've opened the door for more people from there to make a splash as well.
"... I think the UFC PI in Mexico is one of the most important hotbeds of talent in the world right now. The work that they're doing there is amazing because the level of sparring that I've had, the people on my team, the people that have worked with me, they've given me a tough challenge. You know if someone comes through Contender Series into the UFC, coming from the PI in Mexico City, you know it's someone who's ready for wars."

In a year with so many amazing fantasy QB options, Bo Nix is a punt option that builds great teams. First off, he was the QB7 in ADP last season, and going into Year 3 with the a similar situation, but adding a true WR1 in Jaylen Waddle, he's going as the QB15. Why? He's back strong from the injury he sustained last playoffs, and although he underperformed last season, he didn't play poorly. Every time I mock draft and wait until the very end and grab Nix, my team build makes me happy. He has the combination of incredible passing volume and a rushing floor that makes him extremely safe, while still providing high potential.
