Liverpool have made a clear call on James McConnell, and it matters more than it might first appear. A loan to Preston North End was lined up, a deal was in place, regular football had effectively been mapped out, and then the club stopped it. That is not administrative drift. It is a football decision.
According to Lewis Steele for the Daily Mail, Liverpool have "pulled the plug" on the move after Andoni Iraola decided McConnell is part of his plans. The key detail here is simple, McConnell forced the issue on the pitch and in training. If a manager changes course late in the window, it usually means the player has done something tangible, not cosmetic.
This also comes at a moment when Liverpool's midfield is shifting. Curtis Jones is heading towards Inter Milan in a £30m move, ending a long ***** ociation with his boyhood club. That departure alters the internal arithmetic. Minutes open up, squad roles change, and players on the edge of the first-team picture suddenly move closer to the centre.
McConnell is 21, homegrown, tactically reliable and already familiar with senior demands at Liverpool. He featured in four pre-season matches and started the closed-doors game against Como, playing an hour. That is relevant because coaches do not hand those minutes out for sentiment. They use them to test trust, positioning and decision-making.

Liverpool have 'pulled the plug' on one player's proposed exit from Anfield despite a deal having been agreed with the club he was set to join.
The Reds are preparing to say goodbye to homegrown midfielder Curtis Jones after a 16-year **** ociation with his boyhood side, with the England international on the verge of completing a £30m transfer to Inter Milan.
Another LFC academy graduate in James McConnell had also been set to depart, albeit on loan for Championship outfit Preston, but those plans have now changed.
In a transfer Q&A for the Daily Mail, Lewis Steele explained that Liverpool have 'pulled the plug' on the 21-year-old's planned move to Deepdale, even though the Lilywhites had a 'deal agreed' for him to join and had promised him regular game-time.
The journalist wrote: 'The young midfielder, who spent time at Ajax last season, knocked on the door of boss Andoni Iraola last Friday and was told he is part of his plans after impressing in training and there will be minutes for him in the first team this year.

Another image showed Jayden, 19, posing with a girl in front of the Eiffel Tower, which Lynne ***** led, "JJ and his beautiful girlfriend in Paris!"

ARDMORE, Pa. — Andy Whaley couldn't believe his eyes. Standing at the back of Merion East's soaked 15th green, he smiled and laughed as his son, 22-year-old Jack Whaley, raised the Havemeyer Trophy after conquering the best amateur field in the world.
"Did I ever think he could win the U.S. Amateur? No. Did I ever think he'd win it this year? Absolutely not," Andy Whaley told GOLF with a laugh as his son did the post-win media car wash.
Andy and his wife, Kerry, were scheduled to fly home on Saturday night. "That tells you how confident we were," Andy Whaley said with a chuckle. Instead, Andy Whaley, carrying his son's bag for the first time in five or six years, changed his flight and set out to walk Merion for a final day with his son.
This week's U.S. Amateur at Merion was golf watching in its purest form. The famed golf course opened its doors to the world's best amateurs and local crowds flocked by the thousands to walk its fairways, raid the pro shop and watch the best amateur golf has to offer. It was a week for the true, die-in-the-wool golf fans who appreciate and understand what the game has always been about.
It was fitting that, during a week about Merion, the Hugh Wilson design outside Philadelphia remained the main star throughout the week. The world's best amateurs — Preston Stout, Miles Russell, Tyler Watts and others — all either failed to make it out of stroke play or made an early match play exit. This week was about getting to see Merion, one of the game's great cathedrals, without it being overrun by giant buildouts and throngs of fans. It was just the world's best ams and fans who wanted to soak in good golf at a place steeped in history. It was about the magic and mystique of a place we rarely see.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Scrumhalf Noah Hotham will join the All Blacks in South Africa ahead of Saturday's first test as cover for injured halves Cortez Ratima and Cam Roigard.
Ratima suffered a knee injury during New Zealand's most-recent match against the Bulls in Pretoria while Roigard has yet to play on tour because of a calf injury.
Hotham was a contentious omission from the All Blacks' original 44-man touring squad as the selectors opted instead for his Crusaders understudy Kyle Preston.
Prop Ollie Norris also has been ruled out of the tour with a knee cartilage injury. Norris will return to New Zealand, and a prop replacement is set to be named in due course.
The South Africa tour has exacted a heavy injury toll before the first of four test matches between the world champion Springboks and second-ranked All Blacks.

Not the start that Paul Heckingbottom would have wanted or the terrific following down the M61 from the Preston faithful.
The damage was done long before the final whistle. Two goals conceded, three yellow cards collected, countless offside decisions and barely a meaningful save required from Bolton goalkeeper Jack Bonham painted a picture of a side completely out of sync.
A switch to a back four was perhaps forecast during the week, when Heckingbottom suggested that he wants this season's squad to have more flexibility. It's fair to say that a groundswell of fan opinion has been calling for it quite regularly in recent years.
But, on the evidence of the first half, the defensive unit looked uncertain, disconnected and vulnerable whenever Bolton turned possession over and drove forward.
Heckingbottom found the first-half display a difficult one to explain. He told me: "We gave ourselves a real mountain to climb. I felt it was just something as simple as their enthusiasm, their energy about being in this league and the crowd. It seemed to catch us cold."

Britney Spears' younger son, Jayden James, has made another move into the fashion world, stepping out at a MAC Cosmetics party less than two months after his surprise runway debut in Paris.
The 19-year-old attended MAC's House of Glass event in Los Angeles on Aug. 12 wearing a slouchy black leather jacket over a black top, loose gray jeans and black loafers. Photographers captured him posing solo inside the party.
The event celebrated the company's ****** reglass Sheer-Shine Lipsticks and StainGlass Lip Tints. Gabbriette, rapper JT, Ashtin Earle, Landon Barker, Charlotte Lawrence and Vinnie Hacker were among the other guests, while Just Jared reported that Quinn Blake and Between Friends performed during the evening.
Jayden largely avoided public events while growing up, but the MAC appearance was his third fashion-related outing since May. He first attended Dior's Cruise 2027 show in Los Angeles before joining his older brother, Sean Preston, on the Vetements runway during Paris Men's Fashion Week.
Jayden and Sean's runway debut was not the original plan. Vetements creative director Guram Gvasalia contacted the brothers after seeing photographs of them online, Sean told Vogue. They were initially expected to attend the Spring 2027 menswear show as guests before Gvasalia decided to cast them as models.

Preston North End manager Paul Heckingbottom spoke to BBC Radio Lancashire following his side's 2-1 defeat by Bolton:
"I said at half-time to the players I thought we could win the game. We were poor first-half in terms of the goals that we gave away," he said.
"Whether it was the first game or not but they were certainly not the goals that we want to give away.
"We gave ourselves a real mountain to climb and it was as simple as their enthusiasm, their energy about being in this league and the crowd - it seemed to catch us cold.
"One or two [players] won't play like that again. We need to be better but there were also some good moments and I'm pleased with some of the new boys."

Bolton Wanderers made their return to the Championship in style as Sam Dalby and Thierry Gale struck in the first half to secure an opening day victory over Preston.
Bolton Wanderers' return to the Championship after seven years in League One got off to a perfect start as Sam Dalby opened the scoring before Thierry Gale doubled the lead in the first half.
Preston scored late on through substitute Jusef Erabi, but the home side held on to secure a crucial opening weekend victory at home.
Bolton started the game as the brighter of the two sides and it was the home side who struck first. John McAtee raced onto a ball over the top and fired a shot on goal from range. Daniel Iversen in the Preston goal could only parry the ball into the path of Sam Dalby, who placed a low finish into the bottom corner to take an early lead on their return to the Championship.
The hosts continued to push forward and play on the front foot having a flurry of chances following short-corner routine.

ARDMORE, Pa. – The world's top-ranked amateur won't make it to Wednesday at the 126th U.S. Amateur.
Oklahoma State senior Preston Stout, who was also the reigning U.S. Amateur medalist, backed up a 5-over 75 Monday at Merion Golf Club with a 1-over 71 Tuesday at nearby Philadelphia Country Club. He didn't card a birdie until his 28th hole, making three coming in, though it was too late to mount any sort of comeback.
At 6 over and well off the projected cut line of 1 over, Stout will become the first player to start the championship at No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and go on to miss match play since Keita Nakajima at Oakmont in 2021.
Since WAGR was introduced in 2007, world Nos. 1 are now 11 for 18 in making the cut. Just six of those 11 have advanced past the Round of 32 while Peter Uihlein remains the only one to win, when he did so at Chambers Bay in 2010.
The other two players in Stout's featured group this week, Tyler Watts and Miles Russell, ranked Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, combined to shoot 9 under in 36 holes of stroke play. Watts fired a second-round 65 and was the clubhouse leader at 6 under when he finished his round.

It was an afternoon when much of the focus was on the location, but it ended in celebration.
Preston North End booked their place in round two of the Carabao Cup after showing character and composure in a memorable match on Merseyside for two new signings.
A red card for Lewis Gibson midway through the first half had Paul Heckingbottom's men on the ropes but they cleared their heads and found a way to hit back.
Goodison Park became home for a day just under 60 years after Howard Kendall famously made the 35-mile journey from Preston to sign for the Toffees.
'The Grand Old Lady' has played temporary host to visitors before, including Pele's Brazil in 1966, Sir Matt Busby's Manchester United and the FA Cup final in 1894 and 1910.

English defender Charlie Cresswell has joined Stade Rennes on a five-year contract.
The former England youth international left Leeds United for Toulouse in the summer of 2023 after having come through the academy at the West Yorkshire side.
The Preston-born player spent two seasons with Toulouse, featuring 66 times in total scoring eight goals and making five ****** ists. He has now made the swap to Rennes where he has signed until 2031.
"There's been a lot of talk about my signing with Rennes these past few weeks," Cresswell said on joining Les Rouge et Noirs.
"Finally arriving here and making this project a reality is fantastic. I'm really very happy. I had two wonderful years in Toulouse, I couldn't have hoped for better, but football is cyclical and the prospect of playing in European competition was a very good reason. The club has an interesting project and I think it will be an excellent team this year. I hope we'll achieve great things."

Preston North End skipper Ben Whiteman has told boss Paul Heckingbottom he "has played his last game" for the club amid attention from fellow Championship side Wrexham.
The midfielder only missed three Championship games for Preston last season but Heckingbottom does not seem likely to welcome him back with open arms should a move over the Welsh border not materialise.
"Ben knew there was a line I didn't want him to cross and unfortunately he has," Heckingbottom told BBC Radio Lancashire.
"There's a valuation on him, I just hope for Ben's sake that Wrexham are willing to pay it otherwise he's put himself in a sticky situation.
"He's made his bed. I'm not bothered as long as I get another player."

FC Barcelona will not play the final friendly of their British tour following the cancellation of the scheduled match against Preston North End.
The match, which was due to be played behind closed doors this Monday, has been called off by the English club because they did not have enough players available.
According to radio network SER, Preston proposed completing the squad with reserve-team players, but Barça refused to play under those new conditions.
The only match played on the tour was last Friday's 2-2 draw against Birmingham City, settled by a brace from Hamza Abdelkarim. Hansi Flick's side will return to Barcelona several hours earlier than planned.
The next fixture will come on Saturday, August 8, with a triangular tournament against Nottingham Forest (9:00pm) and Udinese (10:00pm). Before their league opener, the Blaugrana will also play the Joan Gamper Trophy against Al Ahly on August 19.

Truck manufacturer PACCAR reported higher second-quarter profit on essentially flat revenue on Tuesday, noting build rates climbed during the period as orders strengthened and freight rates improved.
PACCAR (NASDAQ: PCAR) reported second-quarter earnings of $1.43 per diluted share, 6 cents higher from a year earlier. Net income of $752 million was up 4 percent from a year earlier and 24 percent better than the first quarter.
Revenue of $7.55 billion was essentially flat year over year, up less than 1 percent from $7.51 billion.
The profit came on lower volume. It's a split that captures where Class 8 truck demand sits. PACCAR delivered 38,700 trucks globally in the quarter, down about 2 percent year over year. U.S. and Canada deliveries fell to 22,000 from 23,000 units. Record parts revenue and a nearly 17 percent year-over-year increase in truck segment pretax profit carried the result.
"PACCAR achieved very good revenues and increased net income by 24% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the preceding quarter," said Preston Feight, PACCAR chief executive officer, in a news release. "Build rates increased during the quarter due to strong orders as customers benefited from PACCAR's industry-leading trucks and improved freight rates."

Anchor Ryan Clark was fired from ESPN during a live broadcast of his NFL Live show.
Recently, anchor Ryan Clark, 46, was fired from ESPN during a live broadcast of his NFL Live show. Many critiqued ESPN's decision to fire Clark mid-show, but the network defended its decision, citing fears that Clark would find out the news through the grapevine. In an episode of The Pivot Podcast post-firing, Clark claims he adjusted who he was to keep his job at ESPN, specifically stating that he felt he couldn't be "too Black."
ESPN declined an official comment regarding these claims, directing Forbes to a memo Chairman Jimmy Pitaro sent to employees on July 21 that stated the following: "Over the past several months, we've made significant progress integrating the NFL ***** ets that we acquired into ESPN. Throughout this process, we have taken the time to carefully evaluate our collective teams, resources and organizational structure to best position us for the future. As a result, we had to make some difficult decisions about job impacts that we will be communicating today. While most of the job impacts are tied to the acquisition, we will also notify colleagues in other parts of the company today that their positions have been impacted. We are committed to treating employees with compassion and respect and to providing support as they navigate this transition. Even in moments like these, the strength of ESPN comes from our people, our teamwork and our shared mission to serve sports fans."
In 2019, actor Gabrielle Union, who was a judge on the TV show America's Got Talent was told her hair was "too Black."
Clark is not unique in his experiences. Workplaces that make Black employees feel like they must tone down their Blackness are a persistent experience across different fields and industries. In 2019, it was reported that actor Gabrielle Union, who was a judge on the TV show America's Got Talent: The Champions, was told her hair was "too Black." That same year, actor Reagan Gomez-Preston alleged in a series of tweets that while filming for That 70s Show, she had to tone down her Blackness and was humiliated by a white male director who critiqued every scene, making remarks asking her for "less sass."

Luis Suarez scored twice and Preston Plambeck grabbed a late winner as Inter Miami, without Lionel Messi, beat Chicago Fire 3-2 on Wednesday to spoil Robert Lewandowski's Major League Soccer debut.
Uruguayan veteran Suarez captained Miami with Messi and fellow Argentine Rodrigo de Paul missing four days after Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in the World Cup final.
The 37-year-old Poland striker Lewandowski was making his MLS debut having signed from Barcelona after they were crowned Spanish champions.
Prolific goalscorer Lewandowski, who also starred for Bayern Munich from 2014-2022 and has more than 700 goals for club and country, started for Chicago and played 63 minutes.
But it was 20-year-old Plambeck, a product of Miami's youth system, who emerged as the unlikely hero, coming off the bench to score the 87th-minute winner.

MIAMI (AP) — Preston Plambeck scored his first career goal in MLS in the 87th minute, Luis Suárez scored two goals, and Inter Miami beat Chicago 3-2 on Wednesday night to spoil Robert Lewandowski's debut for the Fire.
Miami (10-2-4) has won five straight.
Suárez scored three goals, his first hat trick in MLS since 2024, in Miami's last game before the World Cup break, a 6-4 win over Philadelphia.
Suárez had his shot from the center of the area parried by goalkeeper Chris Brady but Plambeck slammed home the rebound.
The Fire took a 1-0 lead on an own goal by goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo in the 18th minute. Miami defender Ian Fray played slow, rolling ball to Ríos Novo, but the ball slipped through the goalkeeper's legs as he whiffed on an attempted first-touch pass.
