While the sheer violence of the impact left the home crowd in stunned silence, former Formula 1 World Champion Nico Rosberg immediately took to the Sky Sports F1 broadcast to dissect exactly what went wrong. According to Rosberg's detailed ***** ysis, Verstappen's race-ending crash wasn't caused by a mechanical failure or contact, but rather a microscopic misjudgment of the circuit's drying racing line.
The opening lap of the Grand Prix was defined by incredibly tricky mixed conditions. While the track was dry enough for the entire grid to start on slick tyres, significant damp patches remained off the ideal line, particularly through the high-speed banking of the final corner.
Speaking alongside Karun Chandhok on the broadcast, Rosberg highlighted that Verstappen took an unusually tight trajectory through the sweeping right-hander. BERLIN (AP) — An 81-year-old man admitted to ****** ually ****** aulting and killing an American tourist in Germany more than 30 years ago at the opening of his trial on Tuesday, German news agency dpa reported.
The defendant, whose name was not given in line with German privacy rules, admitted to killing 24-year-old Amy Lopez in 1994 in the western German city of Koblenz, the news agency reported.
Prosecutors accused him of "killing a person in a treacherous manner and for base motives in order to satisfy his ****** ual urges."
The defense lawyer, Volker Klein, said during the session in the Koblenz district court that the defendant admitted fully to the crime. When the presiding judge, Rupert Stehlin, asked the defendant if that was true, the 81-year-old nodded and said "yes."
The crime took place Sept. 26, 1994, when Amy Lopez was visiting Koblenz as a tourist.

The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy is awarded annually to the college football player "who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement." It is named after former Florida Gator Heisman-winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel, not just for what he did on the field, but for what he also embodied off the field.
The Award was designed by well-known Florida sculptor W. Stanley Proctor and has been around since 2005. Ohio State has had one winner of the award, former defensive tackle Joel Penton, in just the second year the Wuerffel Trophy was handed out in 2006.
The Buckeyes have another chance with the release of the Wuerffel Trophy preseason watch list that was unveiled last week because safety Jaylen McClain was one of the names appearing. McClain is entering his junior season and is expected to be a big part of the defense as a starting safety in 2026. He was an All-Big Ten selection last year and should have a chance at an All-American-type season this fall.
Off the field, McClain has looked to serve others. He started the not-for-profit  Everyday Legends Foundation, dedicated to empowering youth and strengthening underserved communities. Additionally, this summer, McClain put on the inaugural  Jaylen McClain Youth Football Camp, which focused on leadership, skill-building, and confidence for young athletes.  He has also been an active volunteer in seasonal outreach efforts, including holiday toy drives and Thanksgiving turkey donation initiatives.
The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy will be presented and awarded along with a whole host of other awards during ESPN's Home Depot College Football Awards show on December 11.

The entry deadline for the 2026 Charleston Senior Men's City Championship is 5 p.m. Aug. 21. The tournament will be played Sept. 11-13 at Charleston Municipal Golf Course.

Oil industry executives and White House officials, rattled by President Donald Trump's growing criticisms of the sector, are making a renewed push to head off any move by the administration to curb U.S. petroleum exports, three people familiar with the effort said.
Industry representatives said the outreach extends to officials on the White House Domestic Policy Council, the National Energy Dominance Council, the Energy Department and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and comes as Trump has shown increasing frustration with stubbornly high fuel prices that could prove a drag on Republicans' chances to keep control of Congress in this November's elections.
"There's an all-hands-on-deck from industry and inside the administration to stave it off," said an energy industry executive who was granted anonymity to describe discussions. White House officials haven't formally pitched the idea, "but everyone knows Trump's gonna Trump," this person added.
The White House maintains that export restrictions are not under consideration.
"While the President and his entire energy team have taken several actions to mitigate temporary disruptions to the energy market, the Administration has been quite clear: there is no plan to implement restrictions on oil and gas exports," White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers said in a statement.

NEW YORK, Aug 5 (Reuters) - JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon is urging corporate leaders to join a U.S.-focused industry group to address risks posed by AI, as corporate America rapidly adopts the developing technology, two sources familiar with ‌the matter said.
Dimon has personally reached out to CEOs of other large and major regional banks and IT companies to enlist them ‌in the initiative, which he is expanding from a group that JPM helped found called the Alliance for Critical Infrastructure, the sources said.
The ACI and Dimon have also communicated with other prospective members in an effort to schedule calls in August to discuss collaboration, the sources said.
The outreach, which started in July, includes over 40 companies spanning financial services, energy, water, utilities, telecommunications, airlines, railroads and other critical infrastructure industries that rely heavily on technology, the sources said. The ACI has not disclosed results of the effort so far.

Progressive groups celebrated a major victory when 29-year-old Democratic Socialist Melat Kiros ousted 15-term Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado's 1st Congressional District in June. But the Democratic primary upset heightened safety concerns among Denver's Jewish leaders, who warn her sharp rhetoric will fuel antisemitic hostility and violence in their city.
Local Jewish leaders told Fox News Digital that Kiros has left many in the community on edge because of her controversial comments — including describing the Oct. 7 attacks as "inevitable," refusing to label a local firebombing as antisemitic, and accusing Israel of genocide and apartheid.
In the hours after Kiros claimed victory, Rabbi Menachem Lehrfield, director of the Jewish Outreach Initiative in Denver, wrote on social media that he felt fearful knowing that many of his neighbors seemed to support the kind of anti-Israel rhetoric Kiros campaigned on. After his post was met with a barrage of antisemitic comments, Lehrfield published an op-ed explaining how for observant Jews like himself, just wearing a yarmulke down the streets in Denver now feels like a dangerous thing to do.

HETAUDA, Nepal (AP) — She paces the side of the darkened highway in central Nepal, just enough light from the trucks roaring past to illuminate her painted face to the men rolling in on rickshaws and motorbikes. She knows that every stranger who pays for her body could end her life. But she also knows their money is the only thing preventing her death.
This spot, littered in condom wrappers and fringed by jungle, is familiar to her. Rubi Lama once came here not as a **** worker, but as an aid worker who helped **** workers.
For nine years, Lama — who is transgender — had devoted her life to conducting HIV outreach in Nepal's marginalized communities, including the LGBTQ+ **** workers who wait by this highway each night. But after the United States slashed its foreign aid funding last year, Lama and more than 280,000 aid workers worldwide found themselves out of a job.
Much has been written about the devastating impacts the U.S. foreign aid cuts have had on the millions of people the funding once helped. Far less is known about the impacts on the helpers themselves.
In impoverished Nepal, where a conservative culture leaves openly transgender people with few legal job options, the impact on aid workers' lives was particularly crushing. Starving and scared, Lama and around 100 other LGBTQ+ aid workers left jobless by the funding cuts have turned to **** work to survive, walking the streets alongside the very people they once fought so hard to help.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Marcus L. Martin felt instant trepidation Sunday when he saw five adults wading thigh- and waist-deep in the Scioto River. A frequent boater on the Ohio waterway, the Baptist pastor knew the area where they were standing to be treacherous. He believes the people he captured in a photo to be the ill-fated group that drowned that day.
"I just remember being taught that area was kind of dangerous, in the sense of there being steep slopes" and a quick drop-off into the river, he told The ***** ociated Press. A few years earlier, Martin had warned a pair of young people playing in the water at that same spot to "be very careful."
He saw five adults in the water and two children playing on the grassy bank nearby, tracking the description of the group provided by Delaware County authorities after the drownings.
Martin and his family floated away to enjoy a beautiful summer evening. But when they returned past the spot about two hours later and saw the group still wading in the river, Martin thought to snap a photo.
"I don't know what it was. I said, I just need to capture this picture," he said.

NEW DELHI (AP) — Supporters of India's youth-led ******* roach movement clashed with police Monday as thousands of them tried to march to Parliament to demand the education minister's resignation, while the government appeared to make its first outreach to the movement's leaders.
Police fired tear gas and charged at protesters with batons after demonstrators tried to breach security barricades surrounding the protest site in central New Delhi, marking one of the most serious confrontations yet in the movement's campaign against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.
Delhi Police said the march had not been authorized and that restrictions were needed to maintain law and order around Parliament during the monsoon session, which began Monday.
The crowd at Jantar Mantar, a designated site for protests just a few kilometers from Parliament, included students, professionals and families with young children. Many carried backpacks with water and food, expecting a long day, while others waved Indian flags. Police urged protesters to disperse over loudspeakers, as the crowd chanted slogans against the education minister and Modi.

While countries around the world are peacefully coming together and celebrating the global sport of soccer with the World Cup, one Palestinian professional soccer player who dreamed of one day playing in the World Cup lost his life before the birth of his first child while trying to care for his family.
According to multiple outlets, 32-year-old Palestinian professional goalkeeper Saleem al-Ashqar was killed by Israeli fire while trying to secure a cooking gas cylinder for his family in southern Gaza, leaving behind his wife, who was pregnant with their first child.
Al Jazeera reports that al-Ashqar set out on a motorcycle to search for a cooking gas cylinder, but he was shot and killed by Israeli forces in the town of al-Qarara, northeast of Khan Younis, southern Gaza. The Palestine Football ****** ociation shared that al-Ashqar was struck in the abdomen and rushed to the hospital, where he died of his injuries hours later.
"He went out like any other young man, just trying to provide a gas cylinder for his wife and family, but the treacherous bullets of the occupation struck him," his uncle, Captain Farid al-Ashqar, a member of the PFA referees committee who had helped raise Saleem, told Al Jazeera.

A ground-breaking adventurer has pulled off a remarkable 250 mile (403km) journey along the UK's south coast, gliding for hours at a time across open water on a foil board.
Guy Bridge, 26, from Exmouth, Devon, completed the three-day challenge, with a total of 19 hours 48 minutes on the water, by "downwind foiling", riding above the waves on a board attached to a hydrofoil.
He took on the trip from Exmouth to Folkestone in Kent, including notorious headlands like Portland Bill off Dorset where tides collide in treacherous seas.
And he was supported by wife Emma, 30, who also joined him for one leg of the journey in West Sussex.
Guy's endurance journey, which he completed at the start of June, now adds a different kind of challenge to the family's growing list.

The idea is that the people of Cape Verde are united behind the players at the World Cup — and that togetherness showed as the team held firm to seal an unlikely 0-0 draw with heavily favored Spain in their first match.

It's just a nod to the European nation's surrealist heritage — and notably the work of its master in this artistic movement from the early 20th century. Today in Boston Celtics history, John Mahnken was born in 1922 in West New York, New Jersey. Standing at 6-foot-8 and weighing 220 pounds, Mahnken, an alumnus of Georgetown University, was signed by the Rochester Royals (now known as the Sacramento Kings) of the National Basketball League (NBL), a competing league that would later be absorbed by the NBA, following his return from military service during World War II.
In 1946, the former Hoya signed with the Washington Capitals of the Basketball ******* ociation of America (BAA), a precursor league to the NBA, where he encountered a face that would become quite familiar in his later life. It just so happened to be coached by a one Red Auerbach, later to be his coach in Boston as well. Mahnken was traded a total of five times before landing with the Celtics in 1951 for the first multi-season stretch of his career since it began.
He spent four seasons total playing for Boston, recording 3.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.3 ******* ists per game.
It is also the day that former team minority owner Louis Pieri left us in 1967. Former owner of the (defunct) Providence Steamrollers franchise, Pieri helped Celtics founder Walter A. Brown navigate the treacherous waters of the early NBA after his own team went under, eventually becoming a minority owner.
After Brown passed, he and Brown's wife Marjorie split ownership of the team.At least, that is, until the pair could both sell the franchise to Ruppert Knickerbocker Brewing Company in 1965 – rest in peace.
