A runner-up last year in the Sydney Marathon, Ethiopian Addisu Gobena won the event on Saturday, emerging from a field that featured the 2025 winner, fellow Ethiopian Hailemaryam Kiros, and the reigning world champion, Tanzania's Alphonce Simbu.
Gobena smashed Kiros' course record of 2:06:06 with a time of 2:04:42.
Although Simbu was taken down, the 2025 world champion on the women's side, Kenya's Peres Jepchirchir, wasn't defeated in Australia. Jepchirchir, a 2021 Olympic gold medalist, finished just nine seconds shy of the course record, clocking in at 2:18:31.
In its second year as a World Marathon major — there are currently seven (the others are Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City) — the Sydney Marathon hosted around 40,000 expected runners who raced from North Sydney, across the Sydney Harbor Bridge and to the finish line, which was located in front of the city's iconic Opera House.
The Sydney Marathon marked the fourth event on this year's Marathon Major calendar. With a more demanding course than some of the majors, there was once again plenty of intrigue in Sydney. Last year, Kiros finished first among the men, while Sifan Hassan, a three-time Olympic gold medalist representing the Netherlands, took home the women's in 2:18:22. She didn't take part in Saturday's race, however.

The 2026 high school cross country season has arrived, and the boys' division is loaded with talent and potential.
Top teams to keep an eye on include Chiles, Leon, Lincoln, and Maclay.
The Timberwolves feature plenty of quality and depth after they placed third in the FHSAA State Finals. Florida State signee Joshua Hicks (14:49) and returnee Jonathan Kiros (15:21) placed third and fourth respectively.
The Lions should be super motivated after missing out on state last year and picking up some of the top incoming freshmen in the area.
The Trojans have a strong core group, but will need to stay healthy and focused. And Maclay's top runners expect to help motivate a solid group.

Progressive groups celebrated a major victory when 29-year-old Democratic Socialist Melat Kiros ousted 15-term Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado's 1st Congressional District in June. But the Democratic primary upset heightened safety concerns among Denver's Jewish leaders, who warn her sharp rhetoric will fuel antisemitic hostility and violence in their city.
Local Jewish leaders told Fox News Digital that Kiros has left many in the community on edge because of her controversial comments — including describing the Oct. 7 attacks as "inevitable," refusing to label a local firebombing as antisemitic, and accusing Israel of genocide and apartheid.
In the hours after Kiros claimed victory, Rabbi Menachem Lehrfield, director of the Jewish Outreach Initiative in Denver, wrote on social media that he felt fearful knowing that many of his neighbors seemed to support the kind of anti-Israel rhetoric Kiros campaigned on. After his post was met with a barrage of antisemitic comments, Lehrfield published an op-ed explaining how for observant Jews like himself, just wearing a yarmulke down the streets in Denver now feels like a dangerous thing to do.
Just 24 hours after publishing his op-ed, those fears became a reality.

Colorado Democratic Socialist candidate Melat Kiros recently argued how the 9/11 and 10/7 terror attacks were "inevitable" after U.S. and Israeli military actions in the Middle East.
In an interview with Colorado's Next 9News on June 22, Kiros was asked about comments she made while appearing on far-left Twitch streamer Hasan Piker's show where she labeled the Hamas terror attack against Israel as "an inevitable consequence of apartheid, of occupation, decades of occupation."
Kiros pushed back on the idea that Israel "had it coming" but insisted that, from the context of the video, it was important to understand the "conditions" that led to the terror attack.
