MADRID, Aug 15 (Reuters) - A magnitude 5 earthquake struck the southern Spanish city of Granada in the early hours of Saturday, with the regional government saying houses and cars were damaged but no injuries had been reported.
The quake hit the metropolitan area of Alhendin just after 1 a.m. (0000 GMT).
Spanish television channel TVE showed debris strewn on the street and some damage to cars in the popular tourist city. Andalusian emergency services rescued a number of people from damaged buildings.
Antonio Sanz, the Andalusia region's top emergencies official, said on Saturday there was no damage to the Alhambra palace, an important example of Andalusian Islamic architecture.
"There is no serious structural damage, no serious material damage and there are no casualties," he said, adding that the Alhambra had "not been affected in any way".

Rihanna got to share a full-circle moment with her children in her home country of Barbados recently.
The singer posted photos of her and her three kids with A$AP Rocky — RZA, 4, Riot Rose, 3, and Rocki Irish, 11 months — visiting a street named after her in her old neighborhood.
"One minute I feel like that kid from Westbury…the next minute I'm bringing my own kids back to 'Rihanna Drive,'" she wrote on X. "Trippy how life works! And the Glory STILL and WILL ALWAYS belong to the Almighty Creator!!!"
The street was officially named after Rihanna in 2017 and has since become a tourist attraction. The green and yellow house where Rihanna grew up is located there.
The Visit Barbados website says of the street, "This is the place where an icon was born; a backstreet located on the outskirts of Bridgetown. It's tucked away from the bustling traffic of the Mighty Gryner Highway and an earshot from the shoreline."

Ulster captain Iain Henderson will miss several months of the new season after hip surgery during the summer.
The 34-year-old, who won the last of his 86 Ireland caps against New Zealand in November, missed the end of the northern province's season through suspension.
A red card against the Stormers in the United Rugby Championship [URC] resulted in a three-game ban that included the Challenge Cup final defeat by Montpellier in Bilbao.
The second row made his Ulster debut in April 2012 and first appeared for Ireland against South Africa in November of the same year.
A two-time tourist with the British and Irish Lions, he was named captain of his province following the retirement of Rory Best in 2019.

The small town in Wales has become a global tourist destination since the launch of the Welcome to Wrexham documentary.
Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac bought the Red Dragons back in 2021 and have since guided the club from the National League (fifth tier) to the Championship (second tier of English football).
Amid their on-field success, Wrexham have gained popularity on the world stage thanks to their ongoing documentary.
Reynolds and Mac's involvement, coupled with the docuseries, has led to an increase in tourism in the town, while one American couple have even decided to relocate to Wales.

A California father says he simply wanted to spend an afternoon playing tennis with his children but instead found himself being questioned by park rangers who believed he was illegally teaching lessons without a permit.
Sam Dogen, a San Francisco father of two, told Fox News Digital he was practicing with his 6-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son at Golden Gate Heights Park after returning from a family trip to Hawaii.
"I took the kids out for what I thought would be a nice afternoon ... to get over the jet lag, be outside in the sun and go play some tennis like we've done many, many times," Dogen said.
About 20 minutes into their practice session, Dogen said two San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department rangers approached and asked whether he had a permit to teach tennis.

Even with an enlarged, permanent stadium in Dyersville, Iowa, and the presence of Netflix, both MLB and the streaming giant said they intend to still let the famed setting "do the work" for the upcoming third iteration of the Field of Dreams game.
The league and Netflix are now going through final preparations for next week's showcase Phillies-Twins game at the filming site of the 1989 Field of Dreams movie. The circumstances will be far different from the last such game there in 2022. Among the changes:
The site, still a popular tourist destination, now includes a newly completed permanent stadium—seating about 8,000 people—and a large-scale youth baseball complex under its current owner, the non-profit Dyersville Events Inc. That development work has led to a series of permanent features, such as player locker rooms and redesigned seating, that advance significantly beyond the many temporary elements used for the MLB games there in 2021 and 2022.
Netflix will now show the game exclusively. Over-the-air broadcaster Fox aired those first two contests,as part of a rights deal completed last fall. The coverage will be shown globally.
A team from Chicago, the closest MLB market to Dyersville, is not involved. The White Sox faced the Yankees in the first Field of Dreams game and the Cubs played the Reds in the second one.

Welcome back to Part 2 (Electric Boogaloo) of my journey to and through the Sydney Super Cup, talking through what the tournament and trip was like from a fan perspective… but also from having access a fan might not usually have. Part travel blog, part human-interest piece, part fan boy experience; here's what it felt like as a fan walking into the press box and seeing Spurs play for the first time. Hopefully you enjoy.
Check out Part 1 here, if you haven't already.
So there I was: in the press box ahead of Tottenham Hotspur kicking off against Sydney in what would be my first live Tottenham Hotspur experience. Worth It had taken a 17-11 lead into the second leg against Not Worth It. I admired the view and sneakily took the photo you saw in the previous piece; I felt like a total fish out of water, and taking photos like a tourist would have cemented that status. In front of me were sitting a number of journalists and club media staff.
I stood awkwardly behind all of them, as my understanding was that each spot (there are rows of desks in the press box, with plug points and cabling slots for individuals like myself to set up) was set aside for a specific person; but I also noted that there weren't any names on any of the chairs or desks, and so I just kind of milled around until I picked up the courage to ask a friendly Australian whether or not the seats were reserved. I probably looked like a stalker. They were not reserved, so I needn't have worried.
I took a seat and realized two things: one, I was seated behind a handful of very well-known Spurs and Chelsea football journalists from the likes of BBC, The Athletic, and Football London; and two, I was extremely hungry.

India will look to close out the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe when the two teams meet again in Harare on Saturday, having taken control of proceedings with a commanding performance in the opening fixture.
The tourists made light work of the target set in the series opener, comfortably chasing down Zimbabwe's total of 125 for 7 with as many as seven wickets and 40 ***** remaining. It was a result that left little doubt about which side had the upper hand throughout.
Much of the spotlight fell on teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who bounced back strongly from a disappointing tour of England by smashing a record-breaking half-century off just 18 ***** . The innings also handed new captain Shreyas Iyer his first win in charge of India's T20I side.
On the bowling front, Mayank Yadav marked his return from a lengthy injury layoff in style, finishing with impressive figures of 2 for 18, while Prince Yadav chipped in with two wickets of his own to round off a well-rounded bowling display.
With momentum firmly on their side, India will now look to build on that opening statement and push for an unassailable series lead heading into Saturday's second T20I in Harare.

Sri Lanka Women and Pakistan Women meet again in Hambantota on Saturday with the tourists holding a 1-0 lead after a comfortable five-wicket win in the Dafabet sponsored series opener.
Nashra Sandhu's three for 42 gave the Women in green early impetus in bowling before Gull Feroza's 78 and Sidra Amin's 57 barely broke their stride and chased down the the target.
Feroza in particular has become the story in Pakistan's success in last few matches. She has scored four successive half-centuries and her average is nudging 87, the kind of form that makes a top order feel settled rather than simply talented.
Sri Lanka, for their part, know exactly what went missing last time out.
Vishmi Gunaratne and Chamari Athapaththu gave them the fast start any captain would want, thirty-one runs inside the first five overs, only for the innings to quietly lose its shape once Pakistan's spinners took control.

After a thrilling 2026 World Cup tournament taking place over the past month across 16 different cities in Canada, the United States and Mexico, it's all come down to this: The final matchup between Argentina and Spain taking place at New York New Jersey Stadium. There will be heated rivalries. There will be a first-ever halftime show. And there will be a huge number of celebrities in the stands cheering on the final two teams.
The past few weeks have been packed with plenty of compelling narratives that have had fans hooked, whether it's been the viral run on ranch dressing after tourists discovered it in the U.S.A.; the super fans who sacrificed to get seats in the stadium; the players who made a major impact in their first time on the global stage (who could forget Vozinha?) or the general thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.
See which stars showed up to watch some soccer (and Shakira) for the final game World Cup 2026.

PHOENIX (AP) — Video footage of two Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents tackling a man at the airport in Las Vegas drew public outrage and criticism from elected officials.
One video posted on social media showed a man yelling and crying on the ground in Terminal 3 at Harry Reid International Airport on Monday when a man and a masked woman, both in plainclothes, tried to control, handcuff and detain him. When the pair realized they were being filmed, they walked away, leaving the man with a handcuff attached to one arm.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police found no outstanding warrants for the man, removed his handcuffs and notified ICE.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, ICE officers on Monday did not proceed with the arrest at the Las Vegas airport of Phu Nguyen, a 57-year-old citizen of Australia who overstayed his visa. ICE arrested him at his flight departing the Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security said.
"ICE is continuing to act with impunity — instilling fear in our communities and scaring tourists, which hurts our tourism economy," Democratic U.S. Senator for Nevada Jacky Rosen said in a statement. "Enough is enough. ICE must follow the same commonsense guardrails as other law enforcement agencies."

The classic postcard images of the Chilean capital of Santiago surrounded by the snow-covered Andes in winter now seem like pictures from the past.
A yearslong drought that has plagued the country has led to a shortage of snow so severe that the main ski resorts in the metropolitan area have had to suspend the use of up to 90% of their slopes, according to the Chilean Ski Resorts **** ociation (ACESKI).
And with climate change thought to be at least partially to blame, authorities warn that in the long term the region may need to find other ways to entice tourists to spend their money.
This country in the southern hemisphere, where June through August are the winter months, has long been a favorite for tourists from the US who are looking for somewhere to ski during the North American summer. And that has proved profitable. In 2025 the region's ski resorts welcomed more than 1,240,000 skiers, with a direct economic impact of US$283 million, of which US$228 million came from foreign tourists, according to ACESKI.
But with a lack of snow, its reputation is at risk of melting away.

The cause of death of an American woman found dead in a scenic Irish town earlier this week has been revealed, according to a report.
Jamey Carney, 43, a New York native who moved to Ireland in 2021, died from suffocation after suffering head injuries, according to a report by The Irish Times, which cited the Irish state pathologist Dr. Linda Mulligan.
Initial reports suggested she had been beaten to death, but the newspaper reported the post-mortem found that suffocation — not her head injuries — caused her death. Police are investigating her death as a murder.

Thessaloniki, Greece — A man was nearly sucked out the window of a Ryanair flight when it "detached" midair en route to Germany, with other passengers pulling him back inside, a witness told Greek media on Friday.
The passenger, described as a tourist from Serbia on a flight from Thessaloniki in Greece to Memmingen in Germany, was hospitalized with friction burns but was otherwise in good condition, authorities said. The ****** ociated Press quoted an unnamed Greek hospital official as saying the 61-year-old man was treated for neck and shoulder injuries and friction burns.
"Most of us had fallen asleep, we had closed our eyes. There was a noise, like a tire bursting," a fellow passenger told Radio Thessaloniki.
"We immediately realized there had been a decompression. There were screams ... for a moment I thought someone had accidentally opened the emergency door," the woman said. "The masks dropped and there was a strong smell. The head and shoulders of one passenger were outside the window. Fortunately, he hadn't taken off his seat belt."
Other passengers near the man helped to pull him in, she said.

Jamie ****** , a managing partner at Harris Financial Group in Richmond, Virginia (with $1.3 billion in ****** ets under management), had a visceral reaction to the June jobs number from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics: "These data are misleading and should be disregarded," he said in an email to Fortune. "There is zero chance leisure and hospitality posts a negative print in the midst of the World Cup. Revisions higher in the next few months are coming."
He's not alone.
Increasingly, ****** ysts and economists at major banks and financial institutions are saying they don't believe the numbers. Partly, this is a routine function of the way in which the U.S. government collects economic stats. It takes time to gather all the survey data needed to describe hiring (nonfarm payrolls, in the official lingo), and the BLS publishes a series of revisions to its numbers as the months go by.
So not believing the initial figure is par for the course. The numbers will always be revised later as straggling data sets and survey responses trickle in. This chart from Pantheon Macroeconomics shows the scale of the revisions over time—usually downward:
But this time, there was a number in the jobs data that, on its face, stands out as being implausible: The leisure and hospitality sector lost 61,000 jobs in June, the BLS reported, even though the U.S. is hosting the single largest sporting event on the planet—the World Cup.
Is it really likely that dozens of soccer matches, followed by hundreds of thousands of domestic fans and foreign tourists, somehow resulted in fewer people being employed in hotels, bars, and restaurants?
Pimco economist Tiffany Wilding said the sector "was actually expected to benefit from World Cup hiring."
RSM Chief Economist Joe Brusuelas said in an email that the report should be taken "with a grain of salt." "Expect an upward revision to the top-line June estimate when the July data is released," he said.
There is good evidence that the World Cup has juiced economic activity recently. This chart from Bank of America shows card spending was up 5.4% year-on-year over the group stage of the cup. "The boost is being particularly driven by 'non-locals' coming into the cities for the matches, whose spending was up 17.4%," BofA Institute's Liz Everett Krisberg and David Tinsley said in an email.

A century or more ago, Englishmen travelled to South Africa hunting big game.
Steve Borthwick's modern-day tourists came with the same aim. England were looking for a contest that gave a true measure of where they stand against the world's best.
About five minutes into their 45-21 defeat by South Africa in Johannesburg they found it and found out.
Thomas du Toit had already steamrollered over for one try by then. Jasper Wiese had swept past Alex Coles with a run bristling with evil intent.
But it was the sight of loosehead prop Ox Nche stampeding through Ollie Chessum and Jamie George, with the England defence desperately, vainly backpedalling, that summed up a brutally chastening opening salvo.

MILAN (AP) — Venice's new mayor is proposing a dynamic pricing system for the city's three-year-old day-tripper access fee, seeking government approval to raise the charge to as much as 50 euros ($59) on the busiest days to ease overcrowding in the UNESCO world heritage city.
Mayor Simone Venturini told The ***** ociated Press in an interview Friday that the current 10-euro fee for last-minute reservations has not done enough to discourage visitors on peak days. Instead of imposing a fixed higher fee, the city wants to enact a form of surge-pricing, allowing the charge to rise with demand on the busiest days.
Venturini said the system would both discourage overcrowding and help cover the costs of maintaining the city.
"We spend 100 million euros a year just to maintain Venice physically, and ***** ody gives us that money. Not Europe. Not the Italian state. International critics don't pay it either. It's paid by the people of Venice, and in part through tourism taxes," said Venturini, who was elected mayor last month after serving as the city's top tourism official when the day-tripper tax was launched in 2024.
The access fee itself has been widely criticized by activists, housing advocates and opposition politicians for not doing enough to ease crowding in the city, while reducing Venice to a tourist attraction by charging admission. They also say the focus is too much on managing tourist flows, and not enough on bringing more residents back to the historic part of the city.

Bournemouth President of Business Jim Frevola, says expanding the Vitality Stadium to 20,000 capacity is "all about" the community.
"I've been consistent in my time here that my biggest frustration is when people say they can't come to matches," Frevola told BBC Radio Solent.
"They can't bring their parent, spouse, partner or friends or especially their kids – we want to get that next generation of Bournemouth supporters here. It's not about bringing in folks from London or tourists, it's about bringing in the community that loves this football club and has loved it but can't always crack that 11,286 capacity.
"To get it to 20,000 is going to be a remarkable achievement for us and it's all about this town."
The expansion starts on the eve of a season where the Cherries will play European football for the first time in the club's history and when asked whether that makes it the right time, Frevola backed the decision by owner Bill Foley.

With the first wave of nations now headed back home, who's your favorite World Cup Character so far? The Norse rowers who "paddled" their way up Boston escalators? The Scottish Tartan Army who drank planes and bars dry and even made Mets and Marlins games tolerable? The German tourist astounded by college football stadiums and Buc-ees? The **** anese visitors delighted by free chips and salsa? The awestruck visitors running afoul of TSA for trying to bring home bottles of ranch dressing?
Me, I'm going with a write-in vote: The Americans who are surprised, delighted and grateful to see their own country through the world's eyes. Yes, plenty of grifters are trying their best to stain the World Cup, but this game is too big to be contained by greed and corruption.
America is getting a look at just how much fun it can be when cultures mix. We'll see how long that feeling lasts.
This culture shock is, in a way, understandable. Americans are so inundated with criticism of their own nation and fellow countrypeople — with most of the calls coming from inside the house — that it's been a genuine shock to see so many visitors viewing our glories with wide-eyed wonder. Texas barbecue, white-sand beaches and quaint small towns, ranch dressing and salsa, gas stations the size of aircraft carriers, stadiums large enough to stage a Godzilla vs. Kong fight — the things we take for granted are amazing and delighting our World Cup visitors from all over the globe.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine said Tuesday its forces struck a railway bridge, a power plant and other key infrastructure targets in Crimea as Kyiv's military seeks to isolate the vital Russian-held peninsula in the latest stage of the 4-year-old war.
The drone attacks added to the woes on the Black Sea peninsula, where Russian authorities have had to suspend gasoline sales to civilians as Ukraine has intensified its recent campaign to disrupt supply lines and the electrical grid at the height of the summer tourist season.
The peninsula was seized by force and illegally annexed by Moscow in 2014. Ukraine's increasing use of long-range strikes has highlighted its ability to inflict painful damage on Russia and put added pressure on the Kremlin while Moscow's advances recently have ground to a near halt, Western ****** ysts and officials say.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said last week that his forces are "isolating Crimea with drones."
"It looks like in the nearest time, Crimea will become an island. This could lead to some very unexpected consequences for Russians," Fedorov said on a blogger's YouTube channel.
