NASCAR's 2027 Cup Series schedule is still months away from becoming official, but one new report suggests fans could see some of the biggest calendar changes in years.
According to The Athletic, NASCAR is putting the finishing touches on next season's schedule, with several notable adjustments still under consideration before the sanctioning body announces the finalized calendar. If those plans come together, the postseason could feature a significantly different look than fans have grown accustomed to over the past several years.
Among the reported changes are a reshuffled playoff lineup, continued momentum toward another race at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego, an uncertain future for the Chicago Street Race, and a new frontrunner to host the All-Star Race.
Perhaps the most significant takeaway from The Athletic's report centers on NASCAR's playoff schedule.
Rather than making only minor adjustments, the report says six races could effectively swap places on the calendar, creating a noticeably different Chase.

The market isn't hiding its feelings about Meta (META) as it heads to its earnings report after the close today.
Investors are selling first and asking questions later.
Meta stock has now declined for nine straight days, the longest losing streak in its history. The steady march lower has sent Meta shares below all key technical moving averages, per Yahoo Finance AlphaSpace data.
When Meta (META) reports its second quarter earnings, all eyes will be on its capital expenditures plan for the rest of the year and in 2027.
This area of Meta's cash flow statement garners the most attention — not just because Alphabet (GOOGL) spooked its investor base last week by warning it intends to spend way more than expected but also because Meta's stock price has been dead money for more than a year (as seen above).

Grant Thornton Advisors announced Wednesday it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire CBIZ, Inc. (NYSE: CBZ) in an all-cash deal with an enterprise value of $5 billion.
Under the terms of the agreement, each CBIZ shareholder stands to collect $55 per share — a figure the company said reflects roughly a 54% premium over CBIZ's 30-day volume-weighted average share price. Reuters added that the offer price also represents a 17.8% premium over CBIZ's most recent closing price.
Upon closing, Grant Thornton in the U.S. is expected to become the fifth-largest provider of professional services, tax and advisory services, with more than $5 billion in annual domestic revenue, the company said. The transaction represents the largest of its kind in more than 25 years. Together, the two firms would operate across more than 20 countries and territories, bring in close to $7.5 billion in annual revenue, and have a workforce of more than 34,500 professionals.
Reuters noted that Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PwC — collectively known as the Big Four — hold dominant positions in the U.S. accounting market.
New Mountain Capital, which led a May 2024 investment in Grant Thornton Advisors, will make an additional equity investment to support the transaction. After the deal closes, Grant Thornton Advisors plans to separate CBIZ's benefits and insurance services segment into a new stand-alone entity backed by New Mountain Capital.

Iowa State's cross country teams, under the direction of director of cross country Jeremy Sudbury and women's head coach Laura Harmon, have their fall planned out, with two home meets and the 2026 Midwest Regional being highlights for the Cyclone harriers.
"Home Sweet Home!" Sudbury said in a release. "There is nothing like competing on our own home turf and getting a chance to showcase our beautiful cross country course to the nation and for the community to see how great our teams are. Both squads will benefit immensely from getting to stay home three times this fall to minimize wear and tear and to really be ready for the postseason."
The men's team finished second at both the Big 12 Championships and Midwest Regional in 2025 and third at the NCAAs.
The women, under first year head coach Laura Harmon who is in her first year in Ames after four seasons at Washington State, also finished second at the Big 12 Championships and third at the Midwest regional.
"I'm excited about the opportunities this schedule provides in my first season leading the Iowa State women's cross country program," Harmon added in a release. "It strikes a great balance for our team, giving us opportunities early in the season to gain valuable racing experience and build confidence before competing against some of the nation's top NCAA Division I programs. Those high-level competitions will not only help prepare us for championship racing but also provide an exciting opportunity to showcase a women's team that is capable of competing on the national stage."

CHICAGO — Tristan Peters drew a walk-off bases-loaded walk in the 11th inning Thursday, giving the Chicago White Sox a 2-1 victory against the New York Yankees in front of 29,384 at Rate Field.
"It's an interesting way to walk it off," Peters said. "Any way does the job."
It was the second straight walk-off win in extra innings for the Sox, who earned a split of the four-game series. And with the victory, the first-place Sox (57-51) extended their lead in the American League to two games over the idle Cleveland Guardians (56-54).
Here are three takeaways from Thursday.
The teams played late into the night Wednesday, going 12 innings before Edgar Quero's walk-off single gave the Sox a 6-5 victory.

Management intentionally accelerated the shift toward a recurring membership model, prioritizing long-term predictable revenue over short-term reported profitability.
The Q2 reported loss was primarily driven by a strategic decision to double marketing spend to $4.6 million for member acquisition, which is expensed immediately while revenue is recognized ratably.
International conflicts created a temporary 'hesitancy' among travelers and advertisers in April and May, though management noted a recovery in sentiment starting in June.

Performance was driven by strong rate recovery from capital trackers and O&M efficiencies in vegetation management, offsetting milder weather impacts in Texas and Indiana.
The company identified 14 gigawatts of large load projects eligible for ERCOT's 'batch zero' process, representing a 65% increase over Houston Electric's current system peak demand.
Management increased the 10-year capital plan by $1.2 billion, primarily to support modest system upgrades for large load connections and the Downtown Houston revitalization project.

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) and Core Scientific, Inc. (NASDAQ:CORZ) announced an infrastructure partnership on July 28 that starts with more than 500 megawatts of U.S. data center capacity in 2027 and can expand to 2.5 gigawatts.
The commercial link is a deployment bottleneck. AI accelerators cannot generate revenue without energized land, cooling, networking, and buildings designed for high-density racks. Core Scientific supplies that infrastructure, while the companies will jointly design facilities around AMD Instinct GPUs, EPYC CPUs, and ROCm software. For AMD, reserving compatible capacity can turn customer interest into installable systems rather than stranded chip demand, although the agreement discloses no GPU-purchase commitment.
For illustration purposes only. Photo by Brett Sayles on Pexels
The full 2.5 GW is not firm capacity. Core Scientific said the partnership is anchored by 15-year agreements for approximately 530 MW across five sites and more than $14 billion of potential base contracted revenue. That company estimate is not recognized revenue, and no disclosed GPU-purchase commitment lets investors translate it into AMD chip sales.
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) will receive market-priced warrants to buy Core Scientific common stock, subject to commercial conditions. That feature aligns AMD with the infrastructure provider's execution and gives it potential equity upside. It may also dilute existing CORZ holders if warrants vest and are exercised, but the companies did not disclose enough terms to quantify that effect.

AI data centers are putting pressure on the US electrical grid in ways that did not seem possible just a few years ago, and that strain is a direct benefit to heavy equipment manufacturers, not just chipmakers. US data center power consumption is expected to increase by 22% in a single year, with total grid demand nearly tripling to 134.4 GW by 2030 as hyperscale buildouts gain speed.
Considering grid capacity cannot be increased quickly enough to meet that curve, on-site and backup power production has become a significant portion of AI infrastructure spending, with Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:CAT) alone accounting for an estimated 18% of the data center generator market. Notably, the company has come to be one of the Dow's best-performing stocks so far in 2026, with a year-to-date return of 47.81%.
The company's Q1 2026 revenue came in at $17.4 billion, up 22% year-over-year, with adjusted EPS of $5.54, above expectations. The backlog behind that expansion seems to be the real story, with Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:CAT) closing the quarter with a record $63 billion in order backlog, an increase of 79% year-over-year and $11.5 billion sequentially, owing to major project wins like Altus and Chevron, growing rental demand, and strong Mining segment order conversion.
CEO Joe Creed told ****** ysts that the company's massive engine backlog, which directly powers AI data centers, has grown by over 3.5x since Caterpillar first revealed capacity expansion plans back in January 2024.
This backlog progress led Oppenheimer to lift Caterpillar's price target to $1,105 from $980 on July 13, while keeping an Outperform rating, expecting high-margin Power & Energy deliveries to accelerate in the second half of the year. However, underlying margin trends indicate rising friction. Resource Industries segment margins fell by over 700 basis points year on year in Q1, to 10%, owing to roughly $600 million in quarterly tariff charges. With full-year tariff headwinds of $2.2 billion to $2.4 billion, Caterpillar's cost structure is under significant pressure even as top-line demand grows.

NEW YORK, July 29 (Reuters) - After years of failed attempts to resolve thousands of lawsuits alleging that its talc products caused cancer, Johnson & Johnson says it has reached a settlement, worth at least $5.5 billion, that could finally help bring an end to litigation that has dogged the company for over a decade.
WHAT IS THE TALC LITIGATION ABOUT?
Tens of thousands of people have sued J&J in federal and state courts, alleging that its talc-based baby powder and other products caused ovarian cancer.
J&J has long denied the allegations, arguing that decades of scientific testing show its talc products are safe and do not cause cancer.

According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Indianapolis Colts worked out veteran free agent wideout Chase Claypool, who hasn't appeared in an NFL game since 2023:
The #colts worked out veteran WR Chase Claypool today.
The 28-year-old former 2020 2nd round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers also spent time with the Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, and Buffalo Bills organization during his initial 4-year NFL career.
His best season came as a rookie for the Steelers back in 2020, when he recorded 62 receptions for 873 receiving yards (14.1 ypr. avg.) and 9 touchdown receptions during 16 games (6 starts)—earning PWFA All-Rookie Team honors that same season.

PROVIDENCE — The on-court summer work is done. A three-day team retreat with a select group of Navy SEALs awaits next week.
Providence will scatter from there before the start of first semester, the last real extended break before its 100th men's basketball season. The Friars have answered a few questions and hope to address a few more before two exhibition games in October and the opener in November.
Dink Pate's eligibility, Leonardo Marangon's arrival from Italy, another possible roster addition and minor injuries that sidelined Ryan Mela and Samson Aletan for Thursday's session at the Ruane Friar Development Center all linger. Providence still has time to sort out any challenges before Bryan Hodgson makes his formal coaching debut against Maine at Amica Mutual Pavilion.
"I feel like we got better," Hodgson said. "We've got a great group of young men. We were able to install not only things on the floor, but our culture — how we want things to look."
Pate was a headline commitment for the program after three seasons in the G League, the last with the Westchester Knicks. The rangy shooting guard declined both two-way and 10-day contracts offered by parent club New York with the intention of preserving his college eligibility. The Friars expect a favorable ruling from the NCAA while nearing the end of the process to add Pate for 2026-27.

'Disappointing': Baker Mayfield angrily blasts Buccaneers for lack of contract update originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Uncertainty is the biggest nemesis of NFL front offices. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are learning that the hard way. Vita Vea had already requested a trade out of their franchise. Now, it has become apparent that Baker Mayfield is also livid about how the front office is treating his contract situation.
Baker Mayfield is currently entering the last year of his $100 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Projections from pundits have him making at least $50 million after what he has shown in the past three years.

By now, the Buccaneers front office should be figuring out how to keep Mayfield, as he is still in his prime years. However, it looks like they are not that interested in having him as their quarterback for long. Contract negotiations have stalled, and Mayfield seems fed up about the situation. He blasted the front office and declared that his output with the Buccaneers begets a long-term deal that's prioritized, via Nick Shook of NFL.com.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight Robert Valentin returns to action this weekend against hometown fighter Dusko Todorovic on the UFC Belgrade main card, which goes down Sat., Aug. 1, 2026, inside Belgrade Arena in Belgrade, Serbia.
And for the first time in a while, Valentin sounds like himself again.
It has been a brutal two years for the Swiss fighter, who entered UFC with plenty of eyeballs on him after a strong run on season 32 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). Unfortunately, his official Octagon career got off to a nightmare start.
Valentin was stopped by eventual TUF winner Ryan Loder in the finale (watch highlights). He then was one half of one of the most boring fights you will ever watch when Torrez Finney wrestled him for 15 minutes. After that, Valentin got crushed by super prospect Ateba Gautier in one minute at UFC 319 (watch highlights).

Quarterback Rocco Becht is intent on setting things right in 2026. Becht's transfer to Penn State after a rough 2025 season, along with several of his teammates, gives him a unique opportunity to start anew. Along with pass catchers Chase Sowell, Brett Eskildsen, and Benjamin Brahmer, Becht is looking to elevate the production of the offense. However, during Big Ten media day, Becht highlighted the role that a returner could play in the offense.
"That guy is really special," Becht said of sophomore wideout Koby Howard. "He did a lot of good things in spring ball and he's probably going to do a lot of great things in fall camp [and] in the season for us. So, hopefully I can get him over 1,000 yards receiving, but something I'm looking forward to is just playing with him." While that is a lofty goal to set for a receiver you have never worked with, it is one that should intrigue Penn State fans.
Howard is the youngest member of Penn State's new-look receiving corps and is also the only player who got meaningful snaps at the position. Still, being a true freshman meant that he didn't receive many targets either. He only caught seven passes for 133 yards. This year, with Becht now at the helm, Howard will almost certainly see more snaps.
Whether or not he breaks 1,000 yards remains to be seen. After all, Penn State receivers have not covered themselves in glory in that regard over the past several years. Still, both Becht and Howard have apparently built a nice rapport with each other during fall camp, with Howard serving as a potential touchstone to Becht during his transition to life in Happy Valley. That connection may not result in a breakout season for Howard, but it could definitely be better than last season for Howard as well.

Alan Jouban has trained several times with Daniel Rodriguez in the past, so he knows the danger he brings as an underdog vs. Uros Medic in Saturday's UFC Fight Night 283 headliner.
Longtime UFC desk ****** yst and veteran welterweight Jouban is quite compelled by Medic (13-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) vs. Rodriguez (20-5 MMA, 10-4 UFC), who meet in their first octagon main event at Belgrade Arena in Serbia (Paramount+).
Both men bring three-fight winning streaks into the bout, where Medic is a sizeable betting favorite. "The Doctor" has a home-field advantage in Serbia and heavy hands that have proven capable of knocking out high-level fighters. Jouban understands why Medic is favored, but his history with Rodriguez, as well as studying his many fights, affords respect to the potential path to victory.
"D-Rod's got this thing, man – I was training with him when he was young, before he got into the UFC," Jouban told MMA Junkie. "I used to bring him in to spar with me, and I just always remember he has this follow-up left hand that buzzes you. You see it in his fights. He'll be losing a fight, he'll get knocked down and people get a little overzealous and go for the finish. He always had a natural ability – he's a southpaw, so a lot of people don't like to throw their power hand because it makes you put yourself more in danger and commit to the punch, whereas a check hook or something is a lot easier to stay away. Daniel has this natural ability to always finish a combination with his left hand, which is his power punch and his best punch, as well. It's natural. I've felt it. It buzzes you. He seems to get guys.
"That's what I'm going to be looking for in this fight with Uros Medic. He's a finisher, he smells blood, and he gets you out of there very quickly. Three-fight win streak, three knockouts for Uros Medic. If he hurts D-Rod, I expect to see this in the first round. I expect to see him hurt D-Rod. D-Rod's kind of got a history of getting hurt, and then hurting you after. What happens in that exchange? Did Uros do the film study? Is he able to control the emotions of not going for that finish that he's so good at? If D-Rod can find that left hand and change the course of the momentum of this matchup. That's going to be what I'm really looking at closely in this fight."

NASCAR's first-ever In-Season Challenge appears to have accomplished exactly what the sport and its newest broadcast partner hoped it would.
TNT Sports released new audience data this week highlighting strong growth throughout its five-race stretch of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season, pointing to gains across television, streaming and younger audiences during the inaugural tournament.
The numbers offer an early indication that NASCAR's newest midseason competition resonated with fans while helping TNT build momentum during its first year back as a Cup Series broadcaster.
According to TNT Sports, coverage across TNT, truTV and HBO Max reached 16.6 million total viewers over the five-race In-Season Challenge, marking a 43% increase compared to 2025.
The network also reported its five Cup Series broadcasts averaged 2.0 million viewers. Excluding the weather-affected EchoPark Speedway race in Atlanta, which aired after a three-hour, nine-minute delay and produced the latest Cup Series finish in seven years, average viewership climbed to 2.2 million, an increase of more than 2.1 million viewers over the comparable races last season.

Barak Bachar and Lior Refaelov say Maccabi Haifa has learned from last season and rebuilt its squad, staff and training structure for the new campaign.
Maccabi Haifa had a rough season last year as they finished in fifth place in league play and missed out on competing in European qualifiers. Along with the disappointing results, the supporters were unhappy, to say the least, with how the campaign had been managed from top to bottom.
The Greens have already endured an 0-2 start to the new 2026/27 season, losing their first two Toto Cup games, 3-2 in the Haifa derby and then 3-0 to Kiryat Shmona. However, despite the losses, Haifa believes it has plenty to build on after holding its season-opening press conference at the Kfar Galim Training Center. Head coach Barak Bachar and sports director Lior Refaelov spoke about how they view the upcoming campaign after experiencing a season well below the club's lofty standards.
"It's great to begin anew," Bachar began. "We had a couple of very tough seasons, and we needed to learn from what went wrong. We also had to make some serious changes, both at our training center in Kfar Galim and with our staff. We know that we will be judged by our results. We wanted to bring in players with a specific profile for the club, and we feel that we found the right players, but of course we will only know for sure once we are on the pitch."
"There are times when you need to know how to make changes, and that's what we did. We brought in some new coaches who can raise the standards of our training sessions, and being able to work with Lior Refaelov off the pitch now after he played under me a number of years ago means we can really help build this club back up. We both know what it means to be a part of Maccabi Haifa, and we will do our best to create the right system and procedures. We put all of our failures on the table after last season, and we knew what we needed to do together to begin making the necessary changes."

The Miami Dolphins are two days into training camp, and following Thursday's practice, the team's longest-tenured wide receiver, Malik Washington, spoke with South Florida reporters. Although entering just his third NFL season, Washington has been the most senior receiver for the Dolphins in snaps on Miami and time with the team.
This is among a group of receivers that includes a seldom-used 2024 draft classmate of Washington's, two 2025 undrafted free agents, four rookies (three drafted and a UDFA) and several veteran free agent fliers.
Washington doubles as a return man and has shown sparks of being a multifaceted weapon in his two seasons. He has made 72 receptions for 540 yards, with three receiving touchdowns, along with 110 yards on seven rushing attempts with two ground scores. He also has returned 38 punts for 394 yards, which includes a Week 2 touchdown from last season against the New England Patriots. He is also the Dolphins' all-time leader in average yards per kick-off return (among those with 50 attempts) with 27.9.
On Thursday, he fielded questions from the media and discussed new quarterback Malik Willis, a summer practice season up in Jacksonville, as well as the elimination of 7-on-7 drills under the new coaching of Jeff Hafley.
When asked about Willis and the chemistry they developed over the summer, Washington said, "I think it's huge for him just to ask some of the guys to come out there and be with him, and we get some of that time to bond. Whether we're on the field or not, we're getting a chance to just get to know each other a little bit better, get to know each other's families and learn about each other."

England's netballers reached the Commonwealth Games semi-finals after producing a pulsating comeback to beat South Africa 58-54.
With both sides tied on six points but the Roses ahead of the Proteas on goal average in pool A's second spot going into the game, England had to avoid defeat to progress.
Elmere van der Berg was in fine form early on to fire South Africa into a six-goal lead at the end of the first quarter with 16 of her nation's 17 goals to leave England facing an uphill task.
But some excellent and aggressive defensive work by second-quarter substitute Halimat Adio helped England spring multiple counter-attacks to claw their way back to just 29-28 down at the halfway stage.
The Roses started to take control in the third quarter, opening up a seven-goal lead at one stage before the Proteas netted three times in quick succession to go into the final 15 minutes 43-39 behind.

NEW YORK, July 29 (Reuters) - Options traders expect a roughly $190 billion swing in Microsoft's market value after it reports earnings on Wednesday, an unusually large move that underscores investors' growing eagerness to see if billions of dollars in AI spending are beginning to pay off.
The tech company's options imply a move of about 6.6% in either direction after the company reports fourth-quarter results. By comparison, over the last 12 earnings cycles, Microsoft has averaged a 4.8% implied move and a 4.4% actual move, Option Research & Technology Services (ORATS) data showed.
The significantly higher pricing this quarter suggests that investors view Microsoft — one of the hyperscalers whose massive AI capital spending is at the heart of this year's AI rally and the broader bull market — as central to the AI earnings story.
With the AI trade now faltering, investors who flocked to technology stocks are growing wary of ever-rising costs.

History suggests that a shift in monetary policy will drag the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite into correction territory. Here are the important details.
CME Group's FedWatch tool uses futures prices (tied to the federal funds rate) to calculate the odds of future monetary policy decisions. In other words, it translates what traders are willing to pay for futures contracts into percentage probabilities that the Federal Reserve will raise, lower, or keep interest rates steady at future meetings.
