Warren Buffett's 90/10 mix of an S&P 500 fund and Treasury bills gives a 65-year-old with $600,000 about $4,800 monthly alongside Social Security.
Senior deductions and Social Security's partial taxation shrink the federal bill to roughly $1,000 a year, under 2% of spending.
Required withdrawals at 73 will raise taxes, so Roth conversions in the years before then and protecting the bond cushion keep the plan working.
Building a portfolio and living off one are two completely different skills, and almost ****** ody teaches the second. This problem is what The Definitive Guide to Retirement Income helps, and it is free today. Read more here. (Sponsor)
Warren Buffett has told the world exactly how he wants his wife's money invested after he is gone. In his 2013 letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders he wrote that his advice to the trustee "could not be more simple": put 10% of the cash in short-term government bonds and 90% in a very low-cost S&P 500 index fund. No stock picking, no bond ladder, no annuity.

Roth conversions count as income, so retirees over 65 near $75,000 can lose the new $6,000 senior deduction without warning.
A $40,000 conversion for a single retiree costs about 23% rather than the quoted 22%, while $100,000 nearly erases the deduction.
Converting only up to the income threshold, waiting until 2029, or paying conversion tax from taxable savings can protect the deduction.

Congress handed people 65 and older a new tax break last year, and it comes with a tripwire that most of the articles celebrating it skipped. The deduction is worth up to $6,000 a person for tax years 2025 through 2028. It starts to shrink once your income passes $75,000 if you are single, or $150,000 if you file jointly, and it shrinks fast: 6 cents for every dollar over the line. At $175,000 single or $250,000 joint it is gone.

Converting your 401(k) to a Roth portfolio will allow you to entirely avoid RMDs. This is a legitimate form of tax planning. However, often there's a difference between whether you can do something and whether you should; whether it's allowed, and whether it's in your long-term best interest.
For example, say that you're 62 years old. You have $1.6 million in a 401(k). If you convert this portfolio to a Roth IRA 10% at a time, you can avoid required minimum distributions on your $1.6 million. However, particularly for households approaching retirement, a Roth conversion may result in a net-loss. There's a chance that the tax costs of making those conversions will outweigh the tax benefits of avoiding minimum distributions.
Here are some things to consider. Also consider matching with a fiduciary financial advisor who can help you weigh your options.
Starting at age 73 (or 75 starting in 2023), the IRS requires you to begin taking regular, minimum withdrawals from every pre-tax retirement account. This includes 401(k) and traditional IRA portfolios. These withdrawals are known as RMDs.
The exact amount you must take is based on the portfolio's total value on January 1 and your age. You have until the end of each year to make the withdrawal, so you can take your minimum distribution in any amount at any time by or before December 31. If you don't take your minimum distribution, the IRS charges a tax penalty typically worth 25% of the amount not withdrawn.

UW and Nebraska face off in Lincoln this weekend for the first time as conference foes. The long and storied history between the two teams stretches exactly 101 years and two weeks to the day between the very first match up in 1925 and this Saturday's game. That shared history primarily revolves around the four games played during the 1990s when both programs were at their peak. The 1991 game featured a furious second half comeback in Lincoln that built the momentum towards UW's eventual national championship. The Cornhuskers' return trip to Seattle in 1992 set the stage for the loudest recorded home crowd in college football history. Five years later, Nebraska returned to Montlake to get their revenge for the previous two games while on their way to their own national championship in 1997 in Tom Osborne's final season.
For these two programs, the current stakes of this weekend's game are much lower, although not entirely without significance. Both Washington and Nebraska enter Saturday night's matchup at a crossroads in their seasons. Nebraska sits at 5-2 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten play, but the Cornhuskers are coming off consecutive close losses to Indiana and Oregon. Despite those defeats, Matt Rhule's team has established itself as one of the league's most physical and statistically dominant defenses, keeping every game within reach through disciplined play, strong linebacker action, and excellent situational defense.
Washington, meanwhile, is 4-3 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The Huskies snapped a three-game losing streak with a 38-26 victory over Purdue before their bye week and arrive in Lincoln needing momentum to salvage their Big Ten campaign. Jedd Fisch's offense remains heavily dependent on its passing attack, ranking among the conference's better aerial units, but questions at quarterback and a struggling rushing offense persist.
Over Matt Rhule's four years at Nebraska, the Cornhuskers have embraced a physical and gritty, defensive-oriented identity as a program. Under first-year defensive coordinator, Rob Aurich, Nebraska has maintained the aggressive, fundamentally sound identity Nebraska built under Rhule. The Cornhuskers rank 14th nationally in scoring defense, 9th in total defense, and are holding opponents to just 171 passing yards and 99 rushing yards per game on average. Their suffocating rushing defense on early downs often position them in 3rd & long passing situations where they pressure packages and blanketing secondary can create plays. This formula is what has allowed Nebraska to lead the FBS in defensive 3rd down conversion percentage at just 19%. To put that statistic into perspective, Nebraska's defense has allowed just eight third down conversions in their four Big Ten conference games this season, including games with just one allowed against Maryland and Indiana.
Nebraska typically operates from a multiple-front structure, mixing even-front and odd-front looks while emphasizing gap discipline and disgui

The Green Bay Packers are 5-3 after beating the Carolina Panthers by a 27-19 final score on "Thursday Night Football" from Lambeau Field. There were **** ps along the way, especially early and late, but the Packers got three touchdown passes from Jordan Love and six sacks from Jonathan Gannon's defense to power what ended up being a winning performance.
Highlighting the good, the bad and the ugly coming out of Thursday night's win:
Jordan Love during the first three quarters, the adversity defense, and the pass-rush: Love was on fire for the first 45 minutes, completing 26 of his first 33 passes for 262 yards and three scores. He threw a pick early in the fourth quarter, starting a disappointing finish for the offense overall, but the Packers quarterback was terrific for most of the contest, playing on time from the pocket and consistently finding completions. Jonathan Gannon's defense was dominant at times, allowing only three points off three Packers turnovers, and the only three points came after the fumbled opening kickoff that gave the Panthers the ball in field goal range. It took a few crazy conversions for the Panthers to score a touchdown in the second half. The Packers were dominant up front, sacking Bryce Young six times and consistently disrupting the pocket.
The start, and most of the finish: How did the Packers open the game? By fumbling away the opening kickoff, dropping three first-quarter passes and committing a pre-snap penalty. The turnover spotted the Panthers three early points. To Green Bay's credit, the first quarter ended with the Packers leading. During most of the second and third quarters, the Packers were in complete control, leading 20-10 at the half and 27-13 with a chance to dagger the Panthers to start the fourth quarter. But Jordan Love threw a pick on the second play of the fourth, turning the game sharply, and the Panthers eventually scored on a 70-yard drive and had the ball down one score with a chance to tie the game. What should have been a comfortable, two- or three-score win ended up being a nail biter because the Packers made costly mistakes and couldn't run the ball. One more bad: Trey Smack missed an extra point, so the kicking worries continue to linger. The lost point mattered because it kept the Panthers within one score in the fourth quarter.
The run game. The Packers returned Aaron Banks to the lineup at left guard, and Josh Jacobs got a full workload against the NFL's worst run defense entering Week 8, but it wasn't nearly enough to awaken Green Bay's dormant run game. Jacobs turned 21 rushes into only 39 yards, and 18 of the Packers' 66 rushing yards came on a well-executed Savion Williams gadget play. The 25 designed runs to running backs gained all of 48 yards. Jacobs didn't have a run longer than six yards. It's possible the Packers run game just isn't going to happen in 2026. This is a historically bad start -- the Packers are just the 14th team since 1935 to rush for fewer than 500 yards

The Green Bay Packers and Carolina Panthers are trading touchdowns on Thursday Night Football. Carolina currently has a 10-6 lead after scoring a field goal on their first drive and a touchdown on their second, while the Packers scored on their second offensive drive.
Green Bay's touchdown was on an eight-play, 56-yard drive that ended in a 12-yard touchdown to tight end Tucker Kraft. However, the extra point was no good as kicker Tyler Smack doinked it on the left upright.
Here is a look at Kraft's touchdown, courtesy of the NFL's official social media:
On the ensuing drive, Carolina responded with a 13-play drive that went 65 yards and lasted over five minutes. They do third-down conversions and a fourth-down conversion to keep the drive going. It ended in a six-yard touchdown run from running back Chuba Hubbard, which giave the Panthers he 10-6 lead.
Here is a look at Hubbard's touchdown, courtesy of the NFL's official social media:

I reached out to the folks at Black Shoe Diaries to talk about this weekend's game between their Nittany Lions and our Purdue Boilermakers. They were kind enough to respond with some informative answers to my questions. Make sure to go check them out.
Penn State has not won a Big Ten game yet this year. The schedule to start the year has turned out to be a lot tougher than most people probably thought going in. Given the turnover at the top, what was expected of Penn State by fans coming into this season?
I predicted a 9-3 season. Some others on our site were at least mentioning the word playoff in the offseason. Personally, I thought Penn State would have enough experience with Matt Campbell's system considering that there would be so much continuity with so many players making the move from Iowa State. A lot of that optimism was tied to the schedule. Unlike 2025 where Penn State jumped right into the deep end with a showdown against Oregon in conference play, this year seemed like it would give some runway for the Lions to work things out before a Whiteout matchup against USC. That seemed to be the plan until halftime of the Wisconsin game. From that 17-0 lead against the Badgers, the Lions have struggled mightily.
Three of the four Big Ten losses have come by 8 or fewer points. Is this a situation where Penn State may be 0-4 but they could very easily be 3-1? I guess the crux of my question is, is Penn State better than their record reflects?
I think it should be at least 1-3. The Wisconsin loss was egregious. Penn State led from the start. They could never quite put away the Badgers, had to settle for field goals, committed a brutal turnover, and then allowed a couple of long conversions in the loss. This team isn't as talented as last year's Penn State team, but there are some similarities. They've had second half leads in three of the four losses, just as last year's Penn State team lost fourth quarter/overtime leads to Oregon, Indiana, Iowa, and Northwestern.

A Medicaid divorce lets the at-home spouse keep the house and up to $162,660 while Medicaid covers the nursing home's $9,277 monthly bill.
The strategy requires a real court-ordered divorce, since Medicaid's five-year look-back treats uneven transfers as gifts and penalizes them.
Before filing, families should exhaust spousal refusal, Medicaid-compliant annuities, and exempt-asset conversions, since a divorce strips survivor benefits and medical decision rights.

A Medicaid divorce, involves a long-married couple legally ending their marriage as part of a long-term care strategy. He enters a nursing home that Medicaid may cover, while she keeps the house and a larger share of their savings to protect her retirement. It's a real but uncommon strategy. State laws may vary, and many attorneys consider it a last resort.

Medicare's two-year income lookback makes age 63 the last year a Roth conversion won't directly raise your Medicare premiums at 65.
Married couples can convert roughly $133,000 annually within the 22% bracket, but crossing the $218,000 IRMAA threshold triggers surcharges for both spouses.
Delaying Social Security to 70 preserves low-income years for conversions, since every dollar of benefits claimed adds an invisible marginal rate on top of conversion income.

A 63-year-old with $1.4 million in a traditional 401(k) has a narrower Roth conversion window than the calendar suggests. Medicare enrollment at 65 uses a two-year lookback on modified adjusted gross income, which means the conversion executed at 63 is the one that sets Medicare premiums at 65. The real deadline arrives earlier than most people expect.

Exodus Movement, Inc. (NYSEAMERICAN:EXOD) reported on September 11 that August payment-processing gross transaction volume reached $356.8 million, up from $338.0 million in July. Monthly active cards declined to 757,900 from 783,600.
Separately, Web3 exchange-provider processed volume increased to $376.8 million from $314.8 million, while reported monthly active users remained at 1.4 million. The figures show stronger transaction activity alongside fewer active cards and a stable reported user count.
The question is whether that activity produces enough revenue to improve profitability while Exodus Movement, Inc. (NYSEAMERICAN:EXOD) integrates Monavate and reduces costs.
Payment growth persists after adjusting for currency translation. Exodus Movement, Inc. (NYSEAMERICAN:EXOD) converted sterling payment volumes into dollars using average rates of $1.35 per pound for August and $1.34 for July. Reversing those conversions implies approximately 4.8% growth in underlying sterling volume, compared with 5.6% in reported dollars. Both calculations use rounded disclosed figures.
Web3 exchange-provider volume increased approximately 19.7%. XO Swap partners contributed 23% of volume in both months. The unchanged reported share suggests both the partner channel and the remaining business contributed to growth.

On August 6, PureCycle Technologies (NASDAQ:PCT) reported second-quarter results for the period ended June 30, and buried in the numbers was something the plastics recycler has chased for years: an actual branded product on store shelves. Select Downy detergent caps made with PureCycle's PureFive resin entered commercial production for Procter & Gamble during the quarter, the first tangible sign the company's purification technology can clear a major consumer brand's supply chain. Revenue came in at $4.5 million, up roughly 173% from a year earlier and the sixth straight quarter of sequential growth.
The Downy win was not an isolated event. PureCycle said select Tide caps are scheduled for retail production in the third quarter, with Vicks ZzzQuil PURE Zzzs child-resistant lids targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026. Seven customer conversions took place during the quarter, alongside six new commercial partnerships spanning closures, automotive, film, and food packaging, including Amcor, Motherson, and Innovia Films. Regulation is doing real work here too. New Jersey's Department of Environmental Protection approved PureFive as post-consumer recycled content, a decision that arrives as the state's food contact exemption expires in January 2027 and its recycled content requirement climbs to 20%, while California's SB54 is already in effect.
Operationally, the Ironton facility's planned turnaround finished ahead of schedule and under budget, with more than 170 reliability and rate projects completed and inspections showing no corrosion on major equipment. On-site compounding, commissioned in April, is now running 24 hours a day, five days a week, with plans to expand to seven by the fourth quarter. PureCycle also picked up ISO 9001:2015 certification in May and closed the quarter with $236.9 million in total liquidity after a June capital raise.
The other side of the ledger is harder to ignore. PureCycle posted a net loss of $142.2 million for the quarter, and adjusted EBITDA actually widened to a loss of $31.7 million from a loss of $27.8 million a year earlier, a shift the company attributes to smaller non-cash addbacks rather than weaker operations. PureFive production fell to 4.5 million pounds for the quarter, a direct result of the planned turnaround, even though output was still up about 32% from a year ago. Growth is not coming cheap either. Full-year 2026 project spending guidance was raised to a range of $45 million to $50 million, up from the prior $39 million to $45 million.

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Freshman Tait Reynolds replaced an injured Christopher Vizzina at quarterback and threw for 178 yards and led five scoring drives as Clemson defeated Georgia Southern 22-7 on Saturday night following a two-hour lightning delay.
T.J. Moore had seven catches for 103 yards and a touchdown and Nolan Hauser was 5 for 5 on field goal attempts for Clemson (1-1), which rebounded from a 51-10 thrashing at the hands of No. 11 LSU last week.
That loss, combined with a seventh place finish in the ACC last year, left fans and former players frustrated with the Tigers' sharp falloff under longtime head coach Dabo Swinney. Clemson's win likely did little to inspire much confidence in new coordinator Chad Morris' offense.
The Tigers (1-1), who were outgained by nearly 500 yards by LSU, finished with 345 yards but were 2 of 13 on third down conversions and managed just one touchdown on five trips inside the red zone against the Sun Belt Conference foe.
Max Johnson, a North Carolina transfer, finished 27-of-47 passing for 244 yards and a touchdown for Georgia Southern (1-1).

Bloomberg reported on August 25, 2026, that BlackRock, Inc. (NYSE:BLK) cut the minimum size for converting large Bitcoin holdings directly into shares of its iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF to $1 million in July, down from $25 million when the in-kind conversion process first became available. The fund has facilitated more than $5 billion of these conversions, up from more than $3 billion when Bloomberg first reported on the trend in October, according to Robbie Mitchnick, BlackRock's head of digital ******* ets. The process, which can take more than a week, lets holders move Bitcoin from private wallets into a regulated fund structure while retaining price exposure. Mitchnick said "kidnappings, ransom demands, and custody failures" motivate some holders to make the switch. Rival issuer Bitwise has cut its own minimum even further, from $100 million to $3 million, Bloomberg reported.
This is a fast-scaling new source of fee-generating ******* ets for BlackRock, Inc. (NYSE:BLK). The $5 billion processed through IBIT is up from $3 billion just months earlier. It shows accelerating adoption of a service that pulls previously self-custodied Bitcoin wealth directly into BlackRock's ******* et base rather than competing for ******* ets already inside the traditional financial system.
Cutting the minimum by 96% meaningfully widens who can use the service. Dropping the threshold from $25 million to $1 million brings the option within reach of family offices and wealthy individual holders, rather than limiting it to the largest Bitcoin holders. That gives BlackRock access to a substantially larger pool of potential conversions as the practice becomes more common.
IBIT's scale gives it a head start in capturing this migration. The fund already holds roughly 3.645% of Bitcoin's total supply and lists net ******* ets of $60.65 billion. It is scale advantage that likely makes it the default destination for holders deciding where to move their coins, reinforcing BlackRock's position as conversions boost industry-wide.
The process remains manual and slow despite the lower headline minimum. Bitwise chief investment officer Matt Hougan said the conversion process industry-wide is "still bespoke, from introducing a client to a market maker to working with the adviser, but it's becoming more standardized," and Mitchnick himself said conversions can take more than a week. That means BlackRock, Inc. (NYSE:BLK) has not yet turned this into a fully automated, scalable pipeline even as it markets lower minimums to a broader audience.

No withdrawal order eliminates RMDs from a traditional IRA. Only Roth conversions, qualified charitable distributions, or never owning one in the first place can genuinely shrink them.
IRMAA surcharges hit Medicare premiums two years after the income that triggers them, jumping joint filers from $203 to $284 monthly by crossing $218,000 MAGI.
Letting an IRA compound untouched through your 60s forces larger RMDs at 73, often pushing retirees into higher brackets and through IRMAA cliffs simultaneously.

A $2.1 million nest egg split evenly between a taxable brokerage account and a traditional IRA can throw off a six-figure income. What most retirees miss is that where each holding sits and when each dollar comes out determine whether Medicare surcharges and a swollen required minimum distribution eat that income a decade later.

If Carolina Panthers fans are being honest with themselves, they know that their team was not as good as their 8-9 record last season might have indicated.
We know this based on several trends that are going to be difficult to replicate in 2026—especially the number of one-score games that the Panthers wound up winning. Another area that'll be tough to keep going is their success on fourth down.
According to ESPN research, the Panthers led the league in scoring on drives with a fourth-down conversation last season.
The Panthers led the NFL in fourth-down conversions with 27 last season. They also scored a league-high 129 points on drives with a fourth-down conversion, 26 more than any other team (Rams, 103).
Some may credit head coach Dave Canales and his playcalling, but we're more inclined to believe that starting quarterback Bryce Young is the biggest reason for their success in this area. Young's game-winning drives get the most attention, but his clutch factor manifests in more than just one way—and this is one of them.

A $500,000 pre-tax 401(k) overstates real value because withdrawals face ordinary income tax at rates up to 37%, plus state taxes on top.
After divorce, the Section 121 home-sale exclusion drops from $500,000 to $250,000, exposing any appreciation above that cap to capital gains tax.
Unlike a home in a soft 4-million-sale market, a 401(k) lets its owner time withdrawals and Roth conversions to minimize taxes in low-income years.

Divorce settlements often treat ***** ets as equal, but they are not. A $500,000 house and a $500,000 pre-tax 401(k) might look identical on a worksheet, and courts often treat them that way, but the two numbers could not be more different. One is roughly what you see. The other is a gross figure that shrinks the moment you touch it. The hidden rule inside every traditional 401(k) is that the IRS is a silent co-owner, and no divorce decree can change that.

One problem in the artificial intelligence industry that just doesn't seem to be going away: Companies still aren't saying new AI tools are making them more profitable.
"While it's easy to find anecdotal examples of AI-driven margin gains or cost-cuts, economically meaningful implementation seems uneven at best," Barclays strategist Venu Krishna wrote in a note on Thursday.
"While nearly half of all companies talked about AI [on recent earnings calls], only 12% were willing to quantify AI-related value capture," Krishna added. "Of those, tech, financials, and healthcare companies were over-indexed at 68% of the total. The average reported gain in operational efficiencies seems impressive at first blush at 56%, but these ******* sments have not meaningfully changed over the last three years of LLM advances, calling their precision into question."
Krishna noted that Meta's (META) AI tools delivered an 8.3% increase in Facebook ad clicks and a 15.7% uplift in conversions.
Online pet care retailer Chewy (CHWY) is targeting $50 million in cost savings in fiscal year 2027 through AI deployed across fulfillment and customer service.

When it comes to earnings growth rates, it's possible to have too much of a good thing.
That's because soaring growth rates — such as those seen in recent quarters — are more often than not followed by below-average growth rates, and vice versa. We therefore should resist the temptation to extrapolate the blazingly fast earnings growth of recent quarters into the indefinite future.
Am I too old for Roth conversions? I'm 84 and my wife is 77. We have $8 million saved.
My mother, 91, has dementia. Every bank says I need her signature to unlock her $100,000 stock certificate. What can I do?
As the late British economist John Maynard Keynes reminded us, trees do not grow to the sky.

MCDERMOTT — Holding a sizeable lead in terms of possession and shot opportunities is certainly a big deal in the sport of soccer. After all, executing in those areas only increases one's chances for multiple conversions on the scoreboard.
But at the end of the day, the only score that matters is the final score that's displayed on the home and away side.
Not a stranger to competitive contests when they've met up themselves, the Northwest Mohawks' and Valley Indians' boys soccer programs again battled in a competitive match Wednesday evening.
For much of the game, Valley held serve in terms of shots and time of possession, claiming a 28-2 shot advantage in the 80-minute affair with 17 shots on goal.
But a gritty Northwest defensive effort, led by 16 saves from junior goalkeeper Chase Kingrey and an early second minute goal from standout forward Luke Lewis, allowed the Mohawks to defend home and post a 1-1 tie Wednesday evening at Roy Rogers Field in McDermott.

Late-in-life Roth conversions can take some tricky math.
As you approach retirement, one of the most important questions will be how to manage the taxes on your retirement income. For households that rely on pre-tax portfolios, like a 401(k) or a traditional IRA, this means anticipating ordinary income taxes on all of your withdrawals. It also means anticipating the necessary withdrawals **** ociated with the IRS' Required Minimum Distributions (RMD) rule.
As a result, it's common for people in their 60s to at least consider converting their money to a Roth IRA. This can have significant upsides. It will eliminate your taxes in retirement, along with your RMD requirements, and will even improve the after-tax value of your estate.
The problem is that, as you close in on retirement, a Roth conversion can get very expensive. You will pay quite a lot of up-front conversion taxes in exchange for those long-term income tax savings.

St. George retirement at 65 demands a $525,000 paid-off home plus $450,000 in invested ******* ets, ******* uming a 4% withdrawal rate and full Social Security.
Retiring at 62 instead of 67 shrinks Social Security by 30% and tightens the safe withdrawal rate, pushing the required liquid portfolio to $1.1 million.
Utah's flat tax on all retirement income can combine with Medicare IRMAA surcharges to push large Roth conversions toward a 40% effective marginal rate.

St. George, Utah, keeps surfacing whenever readers who are planning to retire in five or ten years ask about fast-growing retirement destinations outside Florida and Arizona. Tucked into the red rock country of the state's southwest corner, it has mild winters, nearby national parks, and has climbed the fastest-growing metro rankings for years while drawing a large share of retirees. What follows walks through the actual cost picture in current dollars, the portfolio target that budget implies, and the tax mechanic most buyers overlook until they file that first return.

The New Orleans Saints had very little to celebrate in their second preseason game of the 2026 season, suffering a 34-0 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Still, even in a game where the offense struggled to find any rhythm, one player made the most of his limited opportunity.
This week's breakout player capitalized on his opportunity amid an uphill climb in a crowded position group: TE Moliki Matavao.
The second-year tight end out of UCLA entered this past matchup with plenty to prove, and he delivered almost immediately. Matavao finished with three receptions for 34 yards, including first down conversions and a contested catch.
What makes his performance even more impressive is how little time he actually spent on the field. The 23-year-old played just eight total snaps, yet he finished with a team-high 93.8 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, along with a 93.1 receiving grade.
For a player competing for a roster spot in a tight end room featuring Juwan Johnson, Noah Fant and Oscar Delp, this was exactly the kind of performance Matavao needed. The Saints have plenty of experience and talent ahead of him, making opportunities difficult to come by.

The Dallas Cowboys started their game against the Seattle Seahawks allowing a 13-play drive for 80 yards that lasted over seven minutes. It felt like watching the 2025 defense, but from then on they didn't allow a single point, forced two three-and-outs, and conjured up a goal-line stand on a four-and-out to seal the victory.
The defense was terrific overall, going from 19 missed tackles in last season's first preseason game to zero against Seattle.
They held the Seahawks offense to 14 first downs, only two yards per pass, under four yards per rush attempt, and one touchdown in four red-zone trips. Seattle managed only 29 passing yards after the opening drive and went under 50% on third- and fourth-down conversions. The incredible play leaves plenty of options for players to see their stock rise on the Dallas defense, but here are the top three.
The post-game signing of Von Miller makes every snap more important for every edge not named Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezieruaku, and Malachi Lawrence. James Houston could be in a battle for one spot with Sam Williams, Tyrus Wheat, Isaiah Land, and Marist Liufau, and he stepped up against the Seahawks once again.
He had three tackles, a sack, a tackle for a loss, and a QB hit. Houston was the highest-rated defensive player by Pro Football Focus (PFF) with an 86.5 overall grade. He was already a tough cut after how he produced last season, but his first game of 2026 was another step to the 53-man roster.

Medicare uses a two-year lookback, so income recorded on your 2026 tax return will determine your 2028 Part B and Part D surcharges.
Joint filers crossing the first IRMAA threshold by just $1 face roughly $2,300 in annual surcharges, with the top tier costing nearly $13,900.
Sizing Roth conversions carefully, using QCDs after age 70½, and harvesting capital losses can all reduce 2026 MAGI before December 31 cuts off your options.

A couple in their late sixties opened a January Medicare statement and watched their combined Part B premiums double. Nothing in their 2026 budget explained it. The trigger was a Roth conversion they completed in December 2024, back when a market dip made the move look cheap. Medicare calls this a two-year lookback because 2026 premiums generally use 2024 tax information. On the actual calendar, barely 13 months separated the conversion from the first higher premium.

A $1,000 IRA withdrawal in the 22% bracket can trigger $407 in federal tax because it also makes $850 of Social Security newly taxable.
Middle-income retirees are most exposed to the torpedo, as frozen 1980s thresholds drag more households into the zone every year with each COLA increase.
Roth conversions before claiming Social Security, qualified charitable distributions, and delaying benefits to 70 can each reduce or eliminate torpedo zone exposure.

A band of retirement income exists in which each additional dollar withdrawn from a traditional IRA is subject to an effective federal tax rate above 40%, even when the household is nominally in the 12% or 22% bracket. Financial planners call it the Social Security "tax torpedo." A $1,000 IRA withdrawal that should cost $220 in tax can actually cost $407. That extra $187 stems from a rule most retirees never see on a tax table.

Fourth-down aggression has gotten more common in the NFL among offensive playcallers in recent seasons.
Still, some playcallers are more aggressive than others. It appears new Las Vegas Raiders head coach and offensive playcaller Klint Kubiak has been among the least aggresssie play callers on fourth down in recent years.
Pro Football focus conducted a study of the most and the least aggressive teams on fourth down spanning the 2021-25 NFL seasons. The Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers went for it on fourth down the least amount of times in that time period. Also, the New Orleans Saints had the second fewest fourth-down conversions in that time span.
Kubiak was with those three teams in the past three seasons. So, these stats are not all on Kubiak, but he is part of a trend. It's not necessarily good or bad if a playcaller is overly aggressive or not. But it will be interesting to see Kubiak's approach on fourth down as a head coach

Couples aged 65+ can withdraw $46,700 from a traditional IRA in 2026 and owe $0 in federal income tax, thanks to stacked deductions.
Most retirees leave this ***** e unused by waiting for RMDs at 73, risking larger future distributions that push them into higher tax brackets.
The same $46,700 ceiling applies to tax-free Roth conversions, but the senior bonus deduction enabling it expires after 2028, making each year count.

A married couple in which both spouses are 65 or older can withdraw roughly $46,700 from a traditional IRA in 2026 and owe nothing in federal income tax on the withdrawal. The figure is the sum of deductions the IRS already allows this year, stacked in a way that most retirees never fully use. The tax-free ***** e exists whether it is claimed or not, and unclaimed ***** e in a low-bracket year does not roll forward. It simply expires.

Social Security calculates benefits from your 35 highest-earning years, so a lower-wage job can't reduce a benefit already built on decades of tech salaries.
Claiming at 62 instead of 67 permanently cuts a $3,200 monthly benefit by roughly $960, while waiting until 70 pushes it to nearly $3,970.
Mark's pharmacy-tech paycheck serves as a bridge to delay claiming, while lower taxable income creates room for Roth conversions at reduced tax brackets.

Seattle's job market is silently rewriting itself. Over the past month, truck-driver postings in the region spiked 231% and security-guard openings jumped 146%, while software-engineer openings suffered the steepest drop, down 56%, according to KUOW reporting on data from the Workforce Development Council of Seattle-King County. Nearly three-quarters of the 7,453 workers laid off in H1 2026 were in the information sector, and Washington state's tech layoffs now rank second highest in the country.
