A loaded 2028 class in the state of Arizona has national appeal with suitors for the top prospects spanning the country.
It is a defensive-heavy group, especially with the top three recruits in the state, but there is plenty of offensive firepower in the state.
Here is a look at some of the top recruits in the Grand Canyon State and how their recruitments are lining up.
–Goodyear (Ariz.) Desert Edge edge Jalanie George is the highest-rated defensive prospect in the 2028 class by Rivals. In May, George named a top six of, alphabetically, Auburn, Florida, Miami, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Washington. He plans to visit Auburn when they host Florida on September 19 and he's working on finalizing a visit to Ohio State. Two of his teammates are committed to Washington, 2027 quarterback Blake Roskopf and receiver Zerek Sidney and he said he wants to get to Husky Stadium this fall and Oklahoma is also likely to get him to visit with his committed teammate Mikyal Davis. In June, he camped at Miami and also made a multi-day visit to Florida and said he hit it off with head coach Jon Sumrall. He plans to trim his list once more this fall and hopes to have a decision in January at the Navy All-American Bowl.

With nearly 30 offers, Fields was able to visit Notre Dame, Penn State and Texas A&M and he's working on plans for game day visits, with a few games being considered but nothing locked in. Arizona State offered him in June as part of the Golden Ticket push, and his father played for the Sun Devils, and he said they were one of three schools recruiting him the hardest along with Texas A&M, which has had major success in the state the last two years, as well as USC, where his teammate, Roye Oliver is committed.

The Washington Huskies are among eight finalists for elite five-star Prolific Prep strong forward Malachi Jordan.
The 6-foot-7, 225-pound senior is originally from White House, Tennessee, but plays for Prolific Prep in Florida and sits as the No. 13 overall prospect in the 2027 recruiting class according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
The coveted forward has already made an official visit to UW last October when the football team hosted then-No. 24-ranked Illinois at Husky Stadium—a 42-25 victory over the Illini—a week after coach Danny Sprinkle and the Huskies formally offered him a scholarship.
Johnson is one of the most sought-after prospects in the country with roughly two dozen offers, of which he's cut his list down to Alabama, Connecticut, Kansas, Ohio State, Tennessee, USC, Vanderbilt and UW.

One of the more intriguing commitments in the Class of 2027 comes from a member of college football royalty. Ohio State head coach Ryan Day recently made some interesting recruiting visits—but they weren't for the Buckeyes.
Instead, Day was supporting his son, R.J. Day, a quarterback who recently committed to Northwestern, keeping his college career in the Big Ten. That decision could eventually set up a father-son showdown, and Ryan Day already knows his son may have a slight edge when it comes to reading defenses.

Nebraska football offered class of 2028 four-star offensive tackle Joseph Frierdich earlier this week. Frierdich made the announcement on social media.
Frierdich is the 41st overall player in the 2028 class, fifth overall player at his position, and the fourth overall player in this class from the state of Illinois per the Rivals Industry Rankings. He measures in at six-foot-seven, 260 pounds.
He has taken several visits to Big Ten schools throughout the recruiting process. He has visited Ohio State twice, Wisconsin once, Illinois once, and Indiana once. Most recently, he visited the Buckeyes on June 10.
Currently, Nebraska has no commitments in its 2028 class. However, they are beginning to identify prospects both on the offensive line and at the edge position.
Frierdich certainly falls into the offensive line category, and it's clear Geep Wade wants to make a move at the tackle position. Wade has done a good job of building the offensive line, and this is no exception.

The Florida State Seminoles extended a scholarship offer to four-star offensive tackle Tyrie Davis-Winn back in June, becoming the latest school to enter the race for the blue-chip talent.
They have quickly become a factor in his recruitment and are set to host him on his first visit later this month. He is set to attend FSU's game against the New Mexico State Aggies on Aug. 29 in Doak Campbell Stadium, he told Gavin Hart of 247Sports. It will be FSU's first game of the season and will be the first of several visits for the Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania native.
He is also set to watch the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Penn State Nittany Lions, Virginia Tech Hokies, and South Carolina Gamecocks play during the season. Davis-Winn made it clear to Hart that he is looking forward to his time in Tallahassee and meeting the coaching staff in person.
"Obviously, it's a great program," he said. "They've been recruiting me heavily to get down there, so I'd love to get down there, see the place and see the environment. They say they love my film and how I move. My parents want me to get down there to see the facilities, the environment and meet the coaching staff in person because I've never officially been down there yet. A big recruiting domino is now set to fall in the shape of Richmond Randle running back Landen Williams-Callis, who has announced that he will be making his college commitment on August 1st, and the finalists are the Houston Cougars, Missouri Tigers, SMU Mustangs, Texas Longhorns, and Texas A&M Aggies, all schools that received official visits from the big-time running back.
Williams-Callis will announce his decision on Dave Campbell's Texas Football at 6:45 p.m. Central.
The Longhorns got the final official visit with the dynamic running back during the official visit window in June, and they have since been trending positively in this recruitment, including numerous commits tweeting at the 5'7.5, 190-pounder in recent days.

Reddit, Inc. (NYSE:RDDT) may be willing to walk away from roughly $60 million a year to stop Google from turning its discussions into answers that users never leave Google to read. The companies are negotiating a renewal of their 2024 data-licensing agreement, and Reddit has discussed ending Google's access to its content for AI use, the Wall Street Journal reported on July 22. Reddit, Inc. (NYSE:RDDT) fell 8.7% after the report, its worst session since March, according to Barron's.
Google can find generic product descriptions and technical explanations all over the web. Reddit is useful because its users argue about whether a product is actually good, describe unusual problems and update old advice. Those conversations answer queries for which polished corporate pages are nearly useless. Reddit can reasonably demand more money or limits on how that material appears in Google's AI products.

Walking away would carry a cost beyond the licensing check. Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL), through Google Search, also sends people to Reddit, where their visits can be turned into advertising revenue. If an AI answer already quotes the useful part of a discussion, however, that referral relationship becomes less valuable. Reddit is effectively being asked to keep supplying an input that may reduce the traffic Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) sends back.
The $60 million payment is not large enough to make the decision on its own. Reddit generated $663 million of revenue in the first quarter, of which $625 million came from advertising and $39 million from other sources, including data licensing. Google would lose a frequently updated source of human answers. Reddit would find out how many users seek it out and how many arrive only because Google placed a link in front of them.

Clemson added another talented quarterback to its future on Thursday.
Four-star signal caller Trace Hawkins announced his commitment to the Tigers, choosing Clemson over LSU, Duke, Virginia Tech and Vanderbilt. The Calhoun, Georgia native gives Dabo Swinney and his staff another highly regarded passer to develop as they continue building for the future.
Hawkins has been a familiar face in Clemson over the past year. His first visit came during the 2024 season, and he returned several times in 2026, including trips for the Tigers' spring game, Elite Day and Swinney's high school camp. Those visits gave Clemson's staff multiple opportunities to evaluate the talented quarterback while allowing Hawkins to get a closer look at the program.

Jul. 30—Gonzaga's home opener against New Mexico State doesn't project to be one of the most compelling games on the team's nonconference calendar, but it just became significantly more important.
The Zags are set to host one of the top guard prospects in the recruiting class of 2027, Bremerton High's Jalen Davis, when they welcome the Aggies for the Nov. 7 game at McCarthey Athletic Center.
A 6-foot-3, 165-pound combo guard, Davis is taking four other official visits before closing his recruiting tour with a stop in Spokane, according to Brandon Jenkins of 247Sports.com.
Davis doesn't have dates scheduled for visits to Stanford and Ole Miss, but plans to see both schools in September, according to 247Sports. The top-rated prospect in Washington then will visit Iowa on Oct. 3 and UCLA on Oct. 16 before making the cross-state trip to Gonzaga for his only visit in November. Davis has already taken one official visit, making the short drive to Seattle to tour Washington's campus during a home football weekend.
Each of the three major recruiting services — On3/Rivals, 247Sports and ESPN — consider Davis the top-rated prospect in Washington and one of the nation's top five combo guards. According to 247Sports, he's the third-rated combo guard in the class of 2027 and the 16th-rated player in the country.

The Tigers picked up their first commitment in the class on Thursday when four-star quarterback Trace Hawkins announced he will continue his career at Clemson. The Calhoun, Georgia native selected the Tigers over a group of finalists that included LSU, Duke, Virginia Tech and Vanderbilt after building a strong relationship with the coaching staff throughout the recruiting process.
Landing Hawkins gives Clemson an early foundation for the class, with the talented passer becoming the first player to publicly pledge to the Tigers for 2028. Quarterback has been a priority position for the staff, and Hawkins emerged as one of the top prospects on Clemson's board after several visits to campus over the last year.
His first trip came during the 2024 season, and he made multiple return visits this spring. Hawkins attended Clemson's spring game, participated in the program's Elite Day event and later returned for Dabo Swinney's high school camp in June. We're just praying that I'm on the good side of that coin flip."

Highly-recruited 2027 prospect Giaunni Rogers has narrowed to five finalists, she announced. Rogers will be considering Houston, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Arizona and Texas Tech for her landing spot.
"The biggest thing that is important to me would probably be believing in your freshman," she said. "The transfer portal has really hurt a lot of people in a lot of systems in the way that coaches now have to coach. Unlike other blue bloods, Michigan doesn't often reel in high five-star prospects. For every Rashan Gary and Bryce Underwood, there are classes without a single five-star in it that are developed into powerhouse football teams. The class of 2026 is the former, as Michigan brought in two five-stars this offseason in Savion Hiter and Carter Meadows. Meadows has the makings of a star, but will need some time to get ready for Big Ten action.
Meadows hails from Gonzaga High School in Washington D.C., one of the more well-known powerhouse high school programs. In fact, he was high school teammates with fellow Wolverine Kainoa Winston, and Evan Link also attended Gonzaga. In high school, Meadows was 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds. He possesses a frame that NFL scouts tend to drool over out of an edge rusher.
Naturally, a high schooler with elite athleticism and an NFL frame coming from a national powerhouse of a school was bound to get attention nationally. Meadows received offers from just about every major program, with 247Sports listing 29 offers. Carter made four official visits — South Carolina, Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan, in that order.

2028 four-star running Xander Edwards is in high demand with around 40 scholarship offers. One of them is from the Florida State Seminoles, which came back in October of last year.
Edwards visited FSU at the end of March, and the star runner had an amazing time while he was on campus. He has plans to take several visits during the season, and Florida State is a program that's on his itinerary.
"I'm going to Ohio State at Indiana. That's a for sure one. For sure going to Miami, Georgia, I'm going to try to get up to Florida State and Ohio State -- those are the definites," Edwards told 247Sports.
Edwards is coming off an incredible sophomore year. He rushed for 2,629 yards on 265 carries and scored 44 touchdowns, plus he gained 211 receiving yards on 17 receptions. He helped the Bolles School go 14-2 and finish as the Class 2A state runner-up. This earned him the All-News4JAX Offensive Player of the Year award, and he finished as the runner-up for Florida's Mr. Football award.

A former Husker announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday night. Tight end Travis Vokolek made the announcement on Instagram that he is medically retiring.
Vokolek suffered a neck injury last season while playing for the Arizona Cardinals. He was the third-string tight end for the Cardinals and played a part on special teams. In his final season for the Huskers, he played in 10 games and set career highs with 20 catches, 240 receiving yards and two touchdowns. In his Nebraska career, Vokolek tallied 458 receiving yards and two touchdowns off 40 catches.

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — King Charles III took his time before officially opening the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after emerging Thursday from the TARDIS of intergalactic adventurer "Doctor Who."
More than 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories will compete across 10 sports and six Para sports in the 11-day event. Charles formally opened the Games in his role as head of the Commonwealth.
The opening ceremony show began with a clip of what organizers called "the world's most famous police box" from the iconic sci-fi TV series going on a journey around Scotland. After visits to Loch Ness, the Kelpies, and Edinburgh Castle, it stopped to pick up Charles and Queen Camilla at Balmoral Castle.
It then materialized inside the Hydro arena — appearing on an onstage garden — and Charles and Camilla emerged, making their way down a ramp before taking up seats in the royal box.

Four-star defensive lineman Brayden Parks announced his commitment on Thursday to Notre Dame, choosing the Irish over the Ducks. Parks was one of the top defensive linemen left on the board in the 2027 recruiting class, and the Ducks made a strong push late for the Chicago star.
Notre Dame was long rumored to be a favorite, but after Parks decided to make the trip to Eugene for his official visit, there was some confidence that the Ducks had made up ground. Parks spoke highly of his visits to Oregon, but his connection to the Irish and the ability to stay close to home was too much to pass up.

With the whirlwind of June official visits, camps, and commitment flips behind us, things have started to slow down on the recruiting trail for Penn State. Still, Matt Campbell’s crew has been working behind the scenes enough over the last few weeks to generate some buzz.
Penn State went out of its comfort zone and scooped up three-star offensive lineman Oscar Webersink last week. He’ll fully make the switch to American football and attend high school in Connecticut, where 247Sports already considered him the state’s No. 3 prospect, this fall.
