Steel and aluminum stocks surged and then retreated last week as the escalating trade war between the United States and Canada sent investors scrambling to reprice exposure to North American metals supply chains.
SLX gained 1.6% on Monday, Aug. 25, following the breakdown of U.S.-Canada trade talks, and the State Street Materials Select Sector SPDR (XLB) reached a new intraday record that session, topping the peak it had set in February. Shares of Nucor, Steel Dynamics, Cleveland-Cliffs, and Century Aluminum all climbed. The gains proved short-lived, however: by Friday's close, XLB had slipped into the red for the week and SLX was essentially unchanged, according to CNBC. Through Aug. 28, Morningstar data show SLX has gained more than 28% on the year and XLB more than 18%.
The swing reflects the complexity of a trade war between two countries whose metals industries are deeply intertwined. Dan Luttner, who serves as managing partner of the supply chain consulting firm NEOS by Argon & Company, characterized the initial stock move to CNBC as a repricing reflex rather than a durable signal. "The stock pop is a headline reflex, honestly — mills reprice to replacement cost the second a 50% wall goes up, so of course Nucor and Cleveland-Cliffs jumped," Luttner said. "But that's not the interesting question. The interesting question is who controls their feedstock inside the wall versus who's still exposed to it?"
Luttner noted that both Nucor and Cleveland-Cliffs use electric arc furnace technology whose inputs have no dependence on Canadian ore or slab, positioning them to capture tariff-driven pricing benefits without the same exposure. An investigation is ongoing after an Arizona State hockey player collapsed on the first day of workouts with the team this fall.
Sun Devils defenseman Matthew Mayich was participating in a workout on Aug. 20, the first day of Arizona State classes for the fall semester, when he collapsed. First responders arrived after calls of a heat-related illness, and Mayich was taken to a local hospital. He has since been transferred to the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix.
Temperature at the time was reportedly between 87 and 89 degrees. The workout was being run by an ex-Green Beret soldier, too, who was leading the team through "grueling" drills, his attorney Robert Carey told the Arizona Republic on Monday. Multiple players told Carey that the former soldier, Tim Ziesel, "yelled at them from the get-go … like a drill instructor," and that they were told not to complain. Water, he said, was only available for those who led exercises.
Mayich allegedly showed obvious signs of distress and was unable to complete tasks throughout the workout.
"He was disoriented and struggled well before he collapsed," Carey said.

Two former employees of the Golden State Warriors are suing the franchise, alleging gender and race-based discrimination, workplace harassment and retaliation in regards to their eventual termination. A lawyer for former Warriors **** ociate general counsel Lisa Shelley — professionally known as Lisa Meyer — and former Warriors vice president of diversity, equity and inclusion Jennifer Vasquez filed the lawsuit Aug. 25 in San Francisco County's Superior Court of California. The two are seeking damages on the grounds of emotional distress and lost wages, and ask for "permanent injunctive relief in the form of an order" prohibiting the Golden State franchise from further discriminating against employees.

DAYTONA BEACH — As an observer, Austin Cindric enjoyed watching Ryan Preece punch his own ticket into NASCAR's Cup Series playoffs. That doesn't mean it came without a little bit of stress, and a lot of communication, before the two-lap overtime period began.

West Florida transfer Marcus Stokes will start for Memphis against UNLV on Aug. 28 (9 p.m., CT FOX). Stokes beat out South Carolina transfer Air Noland for the Tigers' starting job.
The team has undergone massive change since last season ended. Coach Ryan Silverfield left for Arkansas and was replaced by Charles Huff. Huff put together a new roster made up mostly of transfers, and Stokes was one of the first marquee additions to the roster.

Colorado will unveil a nearly entirely refreshed starting lineup, which could include a new starter at every defensive position. Aside from the roster itself, Deion Sanders revamped his coaching staff with two new coordinators, highlighted by Go-Go offense inventor Brennan Marion, a former head coach at Sacramento State.

Even the happiest of couples can feel the strain of a big move, so Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are putting in the work to ensure their eight-year marriage "survives" after relocating their home base from California to England, says a source.

Bayern Munich star Harry Kane said he had good initial talks with the club about a contract extension, but the England captain stressed that a concrete agreement will still take a while.
"That won't happen in a week or two. There will still be a lot of discussion about the details," Kane said after the 5-1 win on Friday in the Bundesliga opener against VfB Stuttgart.
"The conversations have been positive. So far, so good. In the next weeks we will continue the talks."
His current contract expires at the end of the season, and he's aiming for a long-term extension. According to reports, besides salary adjustments, the new deal is to run to 2029 or 2030.
"I'm 33. It might not be my last contract, but it's a big one that I have to decide on," Kane said. "The important thing is that I'm happy with it. And the club wants to be happy, too."

As much as a stress-free night would be nice, the longtime Tigers coach understands his team won't win many games by four or five touchdowns. The alternative, a grind-it-out style, has proven fruitful lately. And that style may be exactly how Harris and the rest of the program drew it up.
Martin County relied on a hard-nosed running game and a punishing defense to outlast Santaluces 21-16 on Friday, Aug. 28, at Napoli Orthodontics Stadium. Two of the Tigers' three trips to the end zone came courtesy of the defense.
Dating to 2025, Martin County's last five regular-season victories have been by seven points or fewer.

On August 21, Insteel Industries Inc. (NYSE:IIIN) announced plans to close its Upper Sandusky, Ohio, welded wire reinforcement facility. Operations are expected to cease by the end of October 2026, with production requirements transferred to the company's remaining plants. Gene Deal claims he's being pressured to testify in Duane "Keffe D" Davis' murder trial over the 1996 killing of Tupac Shakur.
During a conversation with The Art of Dialogue, the former Bad Boy bodyguard explained why he believes his testimony is being sought, claiming there is interest in having him establish a connection between Keffe D and Sean "Diddy" Combs.
"They want me to show that Keffe D and Diddy had a relationship," Deal said. "They want me to establish what I know about Keffe D and Puff coercing with each other when they're around each other. Gambling, laughing, drinking, popping bottles, the whole nine yards. That's what they wanted me to do."
