College football is unpredictable and delightful, which is why we live for what happens on Saturdays. And Week 2 absolutely delivered, from a stunner in Stillwater to an instant classic in Austin.
Each Sunday, I'll publish my biggest takeaways from the college football weekend. I'll highlight the most interesting storylines, track College Football Playoff contenders and specifically shout out individual and team performances that deserve the spotlight.
He beat one of college football's bluest bluebloods. I know he took the Longhorns to the semifinals of the College Football Playoff in back-to-back seasons, but we live in a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately world. And lately, Texas had been overhyped and under-delivering — with three losses to Georgia since joining the SEC, and two losses to Ohio State (in the CFP and last year's season-opener). After starting last year as the preseason No. 1 team, Texas didn't even make the CFP.
But Saturday was different, even after a first half that felt all too familiar. Arch Manning delivered with the game on the line. Hollywood Smothers showed the value of adding the transfer portal's best available running back. And Sarkisian got the kind of win that helps a head coach sleep at night. The kind of win that gives a team a nice cushion heading into conference play, knowing that its CFP resume has a pretty shiny centerpiece.
One note: Sark might want to work on his postgame interview etiquette.

A week after inching past a much-less talented Group of Six opponent in Boise Stat, the No. 6 Oregon football team fell in a shocking upset to Oklahoma State Sept. 12 at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, 39-31.
It's Dan Lanning's first loss to an unranked opponent as the Ducks' head coach and the first time in college football history a team on a 10-plus-game losing streak broke such a streak with a win over a top-10 team.
It's also a humiliating defeat for a Ducks team that received widespread acclaim and praise as a national championship contender during the offseason.
"The score was closer than it really was, because it wasn't close in a lot of ways," Lanning said. "We got our ****** kicked in a lot of areas."
But what went wrong for the Ducks in Stillwater? What problems arose in Week 2 that weren't issues in Week 1, and what are new causes of concern? What's going on with the Oregon run game, and why haven't the Ducks been able to consistently get stops against, on paper, significantly less talented teams?

Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker officially introduced himself to the grander college football world as a budding superstar on Saturday in his team's upset home win over No. 6 Oregon.
Taking down the Ducks is no small feat, particularly for an unranked program like the Cowboys. However, Mestemaker's heroics and stellar stat line (317 passing yards, two touchdowns; 109 rushing yards, one touchdown) buffeted a Cowboys offense that scored 39 on Oregon's vaunted defense.
One touchdown saw Mestemaker quite literally take air and fly into the end zone, which feels like the defining moment of his college football career so far. It's a majestic play; no wonder the NFL may be keen on this guy.
This is the statement play every breakout game demands; what an afternoon in Stillwater for Mestemaker.

What's wrong with Oregon? Ducks' shocking loss to Oklahoma State raises questions about new coordinators originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
It's too early to hit the panic **** on for any college football team. But of any FBS team, Oregon may have the most reasons to be worried.
After a Week 1 scare against Boise State, the Ducks fell to unranked Oklahoma State on Saturday, with Drew Mestemaker's three total touchdowns helping the Cowboys down the country's No. 6-ranked team in Stillwater.
There's a growing list of problems for Oregon, which now faces even more pressure for matchups like USC, Michigan and Ohio State later in 2026.
Here's a breakdown of what's been going wrong for the Ducks through two games.

Oregon survived a scare against Boise State in Week 1, overcoming an upset to open the season with a win.
A week later at Oklahoma State, Oregon found itself in a similar position — only this time Dan Lanning's squad couldn't deliver the same ending: Oklahoma State defeated No. 6 Oregon 39-31 at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma on Saturday, Sept. 12.
REQUIRED READING: Oregon stunned by Oklahoma State by running and throwing of Drew Mestemaker
The Ducks fought all the way back and briefly took a 31-30 lead when Dante Moore connected with Evan Stewart for a 38-yard touchdown. But Oklahoma State answered right back, as quarterback Drew Mestemaker scored on a 10-yard rushing touchdown to permanently put the Cowboys back in front.
Oregon then made a bold decision with 6:48 remaining in the fourth quarter, going for it on fourth-and-8 from its own 33-yard line. The gamble did not pay off, as Moore's pass to Dierre Hill Jr. on the right side fell incomplete, resulting in a turnover on downs. The failed conversion gave Oklahoma State prime field position and put the Ducks' comeback hopes in serious jeopardy when the Cowboys tacked on a 31-yard field goal from Sam Keltner.

After squeaking out a win at home against Boise State in its season opener, the No. 6 Oregon football team will look for more consistently strong play in its first road test against Oklahoma State in Stillwater this weekend.
The Ducks (1-0) will likely deal with scorching temperatures and potential stormy weather as they hit the road for the first time this season to take on a Cowboys (0-1) side that hasn't lost a home opener since 1995.
The Register-Guard will have live updates and highlights from Oregon at Oklahoma State. Come back to follow along.

USA Rare Earth, Inc. (NASDAQ:USAR) announced on September 4 that it completed the Serra Verde acquisition one day earlier, paying $300 million in cash and issuing approximately 126.8 million common shares. The transaction adds Brazil's Pela Ema mine to Less Common Metals in the United Kingdom, the Stillwater, Oklahoma, magnet facility, and the Round Top project in Texas.
Serra Verde began production in January 2024 but is still completing optimization and commissioning. Stage 1 is expected to reach an annual run rate of approximately 4,000 metric tons of total rare-earth oxide, or TREO, by year-end 2026. Stage 2 construction targets average annual production of 6,400 metric tons, with commissioning expected to begin within 12 months.
Serra Verde had $425 million of principal outstanding under its U.S. International Development Finance Corporation loan at June 30. At closing, a $100 million tranche was extinguished after related warrants were exercised, leaving approximately $325 million of principal. The unaudited pro forma combined balance sheet reported a $304.1 million debt carrying value after discounts and issuance costs.
Serra Verde gives USA Rare Earth, Inc. (NASDAQ:USAR) a producing source of dysprosium, terbium, and other rare earths used in permanent magnets. Combining mining, metals, alloys, and magnet manufacturing could capture more of the value chain outside Asia.
The Phase 1 offtake agreement supports revenue visibility. It covers 100% of Pela Ema's Phase 1 products, subject to limited carve-outs, and includes escalating price floors annually. The counterparty is a special-purpose vehicle capitalized by the U.S. government and private investors. The arrangement provides contractual price protection, subject to the counterparty's performance.

Saturday isn't just another game for the Oregon Ducks. A couple of milestones are attached as the boys in green and white travel down to Stillwater to face the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
For starters, Dan Lanning has something on the line this week against the Cowboys. With a victory, the Ducks' 40-year-old head coach will celebrate his 50th career win at Oregon, which would put him in an elite club in program history.
That milestone may not come with a banner or a trophy, but it puts him in rarefied air in Eugene; the last Oregon coach to cross 50 wins was Mike Bellotti, back in 2001, his seventh year at the helm.
Since Bellotti, coaches like Chip Kelly, Mark Helfrich, Willie Taggart, and Mario Cristobal have all fallen short of the mark that Lanning is about to hit in his fifth season. In Oregon history, only three other coaches have crossed the 50-win mark: Bellotti, Rich Brooks, and Len Casanova.
Chip Kelly notably had 46 wins in four seasons as the Ducks' head coach.

STILLWATER — Last Saturday, Seth Storey walked into the Stillwater Raising Cane's and ordered a 25-finger tailgate platter. It costs $41.99 and feeds 6-8 people, but Storey wasn't sharing.
At 9:02 p.m., Storey sat down at a booth with an aluminum pan full of chicken and couldn't leave the restaurant for 24 hours. For every tender he ate, one hour came off his clock.
The first 30 minutes went OK as Storey powered through 12 tenders. At the 15 tender mark, his consumption started to slow down. He gagged attempting to swallow tender 18 and nearly threw up. The bathroom would ultimately call three times — once to throw up.
Even the tasty Raising Cane's sauce didn't make things better.
"It didn't help with the flavor and it just kind of tasted like nothing," Storey said. "Like definitely toward the end, I was just sick of the taste."

Oregon Ducks football coach Dan Lanning wasn't all that pleased following his team's 34-27 win over Boise State in the 2026 season opener. The Ducks were sloppy much of the time, and while some mistakes are expected in first games, others were compounded by miscues that just can't happen, first game or not.
The Ducks were flagged 10 times for 90 yards, and some of those were costly, directly leading to Boise State scoring just a couple of plays later.
There was a lot of bad in that game, but there was a lot of good also. Oregon managed to play through the adversity, erase a 10-point deficit, and eventually hang on to win against a determined Broncos team that showed why they are favorites to win the new Pac-12 this year.
Now the Ducks will face a different kind of adversity as they go on the road for the first time this season, a trip to Stillwater, Okla., to face a brand new Oklahoma State team. This isn't the team Oregon played just a year ago and pounded 69-3. The Cowboys have 91 new scholarship players, so film is limited. They did play at Tulsa last week, but OSU fell 24-10.
Here's everything Lanning had to say in his weekly Monday night press conference before preparing to face the Big 12 team.

It wasn't an easy day for the Oregon Ducks on Saturday, as they battled back from a 17-7 deficit to the Boise State Broncos to take the lead, only for the Broncos to respond and twice tie the game in the second half. But in the end, the Ducks mustered up a 34-27 victory, preserving a 1-0 record heading into next week.
Oregon's Week 2 opponent, the Oklahoma State Cowboys, didn't have an easy go of it either in Week 1 — but the difference is that while they fell behind early, they never found a way to come back, losing 24-10 to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on the road. Not only are the Golden Hurricane a Group of Six team in the American Athletic Conference (AAC), but they reside in Oklahoma and are considered the "little brother" to the Cowboys and Oklahoma Sooners.
Little brother no more, as Tulsa has now beaten Oklahoma State in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 1950's.
It was a stunning result, as Oklahoma State was favored by two touchdowns coming in and had received top-25 buzz after hiring North Texas head coach Eric Morris, who brought along quarterback Drew Mestemaker (the nation's leading passer in 2025), running back Caleb Hawkins and wide receiver Wyatt Young from the Mean Green — plus 63 other transfers, overhauling a roster that won just a single game last season.
With the trio of Mestemaker, Hawkins and Young that powered college football's top scoring offense at North Texas in 2025, their Week 2 matchup against Oregon in Stillwater was cooking up to be a highly-anticipated game between two explosive offenses. But the Cowboys were anything but explosive against the Golden Hurricane, producing just 10 points and four turnovers, with Mestemaker accounting for three (two interceptions, one lost fumble) himself.

Oklahoma State entered a new era on Saturday, as for the first time since 2004, the Cowboys opened the season with a head coach who wasn't Mike Gundy.
Unfortunately, the change in head coach didn't lead to better results on Saturday as Oklahoma State suffered an embarrassing loss to Tulsa.
OSU poached North Texas' Eric Morris to take over for the long-tenured head coach to try and bring the success he had with the Mean Green to Stillwater.
Morris helped North Texas to an 11-2 record last year, while Oklahoma State finished 1-11. The Cowboys had won a combined four games over the last two seasons, leading to the program moving on from Gundy.
Oklahoma State couldn't get anything going on Saturday. The Golden Hurricane got on the board first with a field goal, but OSU was able to tie it up with a field goal of their own in the second quarter. When Tulsa scored a one-yard touchdown right before halftime, the Golden Hurricane took the lead and never gave it back.

STILLWATER — On Sept. 19 last year, Oklahoma State players trudged off the Boone Pickens Stadium field after the final whistle blast. Tulsa players galloped.
Nine white Golden Hurricane uniforms crowded around to force OSU receiver Gavin Freeman out of bounds at the 10-yard line. OSU's desperation hook-and-ladder never had a realistic chance to tie the game. Freeman slapped his gloves together once, unleashing some frustration felt by everyone in the stadium wearing black and orange.
Tulsa beat OSU 19-12. It snapped OSU's 10-game winning streak in the Turnpike Classic rivalry and was the first time Tulsa beat OSU in Stillwater since 1951.
In the OSU locker room postgame, emotions were mixed.
"It was a lot of anger and stuff, people trying to be calm and stuff, telling us: 'We good, we good' and stuff like that." defensive end Jaleel Johnson said Tuesday. "I didn't think so, I mean, that was bad."

STILLWATER — An eyebrow-raising line sits at the top of the Y receiver position on Oklahoma State's depth chart.
"Miles Coleman or Wyatt Young."
Both junior receivers transferred from North Texas this offseason along with quarterback Drew Mestemaker. Last season, Young led UNT with 70 catches for 1,264 yards and 10 touchdowns. Coleman finished third on the team with 47 catches for 550 yards and two touchdowns. Young is the only Cowboy on The Biletnikoff Award preseason watch list. All that led some to ***** ume Young would be OSU's top receiver on the depth chart.
"Yeah, and you know, there's a whole story behind the story, I think," OSU coach Eric Morris said Tuesday.

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State football coach Eric Morris started his press conference Tuesday with a question.
"Excited?" Morris asked.
The obvious reason to be excited is because it's time to talk about a football game. OSU opens its season at 2:45 p.m. Saturday at Tulsa (ESPNU). It's been a long nine months since Morris took over as OSU's 25th head coach. It's been an even longer two years in Stillwater as the Cowboys have a 4-20 record in that span.
Here are three takeaways from Morris' press conference:

Eric Morris, the Oklahoma State coach, revealed this week that he recently shot and killed an armadillo after it caused damage to his property.
Speaking to reporters, the former North Texas coach, hired to rebuild the struggling Stillwater football program, described his overnight encounter with the armored mammal.
"My brain's going constantly and so ... I don't sleep very well," he said Tuesday. "I've had a couple of armadillo problems tearing up my lawn. Finally, a couple of days ago I just popped up at 2:30 a.m. because I couldn't sleep, and I thought it was a great opportunity for me to go outside, and luckily I found him."

The incident marked the first time Morris had confronted an armadillo, which he noted "was crushing my yard, my flower beds, digging everything up."

A year ago, the Oregon Ducks came out in Week 2 of the season and won a college football game by about as many points as you'll see in the modern era, destroying the Oklahoma State Cowboys by a score of 69-3. It was a bludgeoning that eventually played a role in legendary OSU coach Mike Gundy getting fired, and contributed to the Cowboys' 1-11 season.
So now, a year later, how are we saying that the Ducks' Week 2 game in Stillwater, Oklahoma, is one of the more intriguing matchups of the non-conference slate?
It may seem like a crazy notion, but we can thank new head coach Eric Morris and quarterback Drew Mestemaker for that.
The Cowboys have become one of the more intriguing teams to watch this year in the Big 12, and this early-season game against Oregon has picked up some major buzz recently, particularly after FOX Sports' ****** yst Joel Klatt ranked Oklahoma State inside his top 25 to start the season.
"How often do you see a team that went 1-11 start out in the top 25?" Klatt said. "Welcome to the new modern age of college football."

OSU women's basketball was fresh off its first NCAA Tournament win in five seasons, yet all the Cowgirls who contributed to that run were gone. All but one. All but Heard, the senior from Sapulpa.
Micah Gray and Haleigh Timmer had graduated. Achol Akot (North Carolina) and Jadyn Wooten (TCU) had transferred. So had Amari Whiting (Iowa) and Lena Girardi (Utah).
Even Heard's little sister, Tyla, had transferred (Akron).

Jul. 22—STILLWATER, Minn. — Isaac Ahn steadily got better as the 123rd Minnesota Golf ****** ociation State Amateur Championship went along this week at StoneBridge Golf Club.
And Ahn's improvements were nearly enough to land him the top spot.
After opening the tournament with an even-par 72 on Monday, the former Rochester Mayo star shot a 1-under 71 on Tuesday to jump from 15th place to fifth.
That's where Ahn finished the championship, after shooting a 2-under-par 70 in Wednesday's final round, good for a 54-hole total of 3-under-par 213 and a tie for fifth place with second-round leader and former Cretin-Derham Hall star Sam Udovich.
Udovich, who'll be a sophomore at Texas Christian University in the fall, opened the tournament with back-to-back rounds of 69 to sit at 6-under through 36 holes. He shot 3-over on the front on Wednesday and couldn't find the birdies he needed down the stretch to climb back into ****** le contention.

We are less than two months away from the start of the 2026 college football season, and it's shaping up to be quite a doozy for Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks. With Dante Moore and a long list of returning starters back for one last ride in Eugene, there are legitimate aspirations for a national championship this year.
Of course, it's not going to be easy by any means. The Ducks will play some of the top teams in the Big Ten this year, and they also have a couple of sneaky-challenging non-conference games. Looking at the schedule, it's arguably one of the most exciting and loaded we've seen for Oregon in quite some time, if not only for its difficulty but also for its intrigue and storylines.
A trip to the Horseshoe in Columbus, a battle in Stillwater, an early-season test in Los Angeles, and the ever-entertaining rivalry against Washington, among others.
So, which games have us the most intrigued as we get closer to the season? Let's take a look, ranking them from last to first.
Another year, another scrimmage-esque game against Portland State. If we don't see the 3rd and 4th string players by the third quarter, we've got a problem.

New Oklahoma State football coach Eric Morris is no stranger to Big 12 football, having playing receiver for Texas Tech two decades ago.
However, Tuesday was Morris' first time at Big 12 Media Days as a coach since his arrival from North Texas last December.
Here's what the first-year Cowboy coach had to say July 7 at The Star in Frisco, Texas:
More: Eric Morris knew Oklahoma State football needed 'hard reset' for 2026 season
ERIC MORRIS: Yeah, I appreciate you guys being here. Such a unique time for me and being in my first year, but such an amazing past seven or eight months for me. It's been a whirlwind, obviously. There's a ton of storylines going into the season for our ball club. But first and foremost, I just want to talk a little bit about the leadership at Oklahoma State. Just super blessed, thankful for our president, Jim Hess, and our athletic director, Chad Weiberg, with them trusting me in the job that they have given me, and to be able to take over a program that's had a history of a ton of success the last 20 years. Super excited for Stillwater. It was a big draw for me and my family to come to Stillwater. I have a 10-year-old and a 5-year-old right now, and I'm from a small town in west Texas, and that's how I wanted raise my family. So Stillwater has been nothing short of amazing. Super genuine people, hard-working, blue-collar organization. The guys that I brought with me today, obviously there's a couple headliners that everybody knows their story by now in Drew Mestemaker, our quarterback; Caleb Hawkins, our running back; Ethan Wesloski, linebacker; and Jaleel Johnson, lineman.

An ex parte order is a temporary court order issued by a judge at the request of one party without notifying or hearing from the opposing side first.
Natt, a transfer from Sam Houston State, requested on Monday, June 29, that a judge in Payne County grant an injunction so he can play in the upcoming season after his eligibility waivers were canceled by the NCAA.
