There is a rising star to watch out for at the upcoming Presidents Cup.
Jackson Koivun will be a part of the United States team for the tournament, which runs Sept. 22-27 at Medinah Country Club in Chicago. The 21-year-old is one of three rookies, and captain Brandt Snedeker's last of his six picks, of the 12-man team that was revealed on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Koivun, who only has five PGA Tour starts, broke records in his time at college and got his first professional win this summer.
According to the ****** ociated Press, Koivun is making history as the first golfer to start a year without a PGA Tour card and play in the Presidents Cup since Jordan Spieth did so in 2013.
"I'm just happy he took a chance on me," Koivun said, per the news outlet. "I'm going to give it my all."
"You have to have a feeling. For some reason, I just had a gut feeling," Snedeker commented. "We'll see how that turns out. But I have full confidence he's ready for the challenge."

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Jackson Koivun was added to the U.S. team for the Presidents Cup on Tuesday just three months after leaving Auburn, one of two newcomers to an American team that hasn't lost in 28 years.
Koivun, who won the 3M Open in his third start as a professional and qualified for the PGA Tour postseason in just five tournaments, is the first player since Jordan Spieth in 2013 to start a year without a tour card and play in the Presidents Cup.
U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker also took Jacob Bridgeman, who won at Riviera this year. Snedeker passed over Ryan Gerard, the No. 22 player in the world who contended at the Tour Championship and finished third.
International captain Geoff Ogilvy picked a pair of Canadians in Corey Conners and Nick Taylor. He also took Ryo Hisatsune. It will be the first time since 1998 the International team has two ***** anese players, with Hideki Matsuyama already earning one of the six automatic spots.
The Presidents Cup is Sept. 24-27 at Medinah, which has been entirely renovated by Ogilvy's Australia-based golf course design company.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Jordan Spieth set a target of 67 for the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, certain that would be enough for him to crack the top 50 in the FedEx Cup and advance to next week. Turns out he would have only needed a 69, and even that was out of his reach.
Spieth and Keith Mitchell, who was up to his knees in water on the 18th trying to salvage his postseason, narrowly missed out advancing in the PGA Tour postseason Sunday, losing a chance to be guaranteed to play in all the $20 million signature events in 2027.
One birdie over his last three holes would have done it for Spieth. Mitchell would have needed to shave two shots from his score. He made bogey from the water on the 18th.
"I just feel like I'm kind of getting back to playing really good golf, like it's close to kicking off, and I'm not going to play a tournament for a long time," Spieth said after closing with three straight pars for an even-par 70.
Spieth came into the first playoff event at No. 54 and was projected to need something around the top 15 — depending on others around him — to make it to the BMW Championship for the first time since 2023.

Jordan Spieth has insisted that he feels extremely close to playing incredibly well despite looking set to miss out on making it to the BMW Championship.
Spieth was one of the players who had all eyes on him heading into Sunday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
The three-time major champion was one of the names fighting to break into the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings.
Of course, that would have booked his ticket to the second playoff event. But more importantly, it would have ensured that Spieth was in all of the signature events next season.
As the final round approaches its conclusion, Jordan Spieth looks set to end the week in 52nd in the standings. That will create some uncertainty over his schedule in 2026.

Jordan Spieth knew he had work to do this week in Memphis to keep his PGA Tour season alive. And for a while at TPC Southwind, it looked like he was going to pull it off.
But then, Spieth fell apart.
Spieth made back-to-back bogeys shortly after making the turn in his final round at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, including one after a brutal break on the par-3 11th. He posted an even-par 70 and got to 4-under for the week.
By the time he hit the clubhouse, Spieth was sitting in a tie for 20th, well back of leader Scottie Scheffler. That had him projected to finish at No. 52 in the FedExCup standings.

World number one Scottie Scheffler matched the course record with a nine-under par 61 to grab a three-stroke lead after Friday's second round of the PGA St. Jude Championship.
The 30-year-old American sank 11 birdies against two bogeys to stand on 11-under 129 after 36 holes in the PGA FedEx Cup playoff opener at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee.
"I felt like I did a lot of stuff well," Scheffler said. "I gave myself a lot of looks, hit some nice iron shots and was able to make some birdies."
Four others have also fired 61s at the layout, the most recent being England's Justin Rose in 2023.
South Korean Im Sung-jae fired a 66 to stand second on 132 with Norway's Viktor Hovland. Sweden's Ludvig Aberg was another stroke adrift and Colombian Nico Echavarria, Americans Brian Harman and Jordan Spieth and England's Tommy Fleetwood, the reigning playoff champion, on 134.

Pressure from the FedExCup standings yields a variety of results.
Friday's second round in Memphis was no exemption, with its crossover of green and red arrows on the projected top 50 list of players set to be in the field at Bellerive Country Club for next week's BMW Championship.
While some battling to extend their season to St. Louis have begun to wilt in the Tennessee heat (Eric Cole, Matt McCarty), there have been others who are rising to meet the moment and are projected to be on the inside of that aforementioned list. Keith Mitchell and Jordan Spieth are a pair of players who have significantly helped their cause early this week.
Same could be said for Sunjae Im — who is the current FedEx St. Jude Championship clubhouse leader and sits two shots off Scottie Scheffler's current lead at 10 under.
To remain off the bubble for the BMW Championship, Mitchell, Im and Spieth must remain consistent over the next 36 holes. They've put themselves in great position thanks to strong opening performances at TPC Southwind.

Jordan Spieth reached the PGA Tour postseason for the 14th consecutive year, this time with a most curious achievement. He finished the regular season at No. 54 in the FedEx Cup despite not finishing in the top 10 in any of his 21 tournaments.
How was that possible?
For starters, top 10 really doesn't have as much relevance since 2008 when the Ryder Cup (thanks to U.S. captain Paul Azinger) went away from awarding points only to top-10 finishes.
Spieth had four finishes in the top 12, including the Masters and two signature events. Those four top 12s — the other was a tie for 11th in the Valspar Championship — accounted for 52% of his FedEx Cup points.
He played in all eight signature events this year, but he received only two exemptions — Bay Hill (tie for 11th worth 125 points) and the Travelers Championship (tie for 66th worth seven points). Take out those two sponsor exemptions and Spieth would have finished at No. 64 and still qualified for the FedEx Cup playoffs.

New week, new cut-off to advance in the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Seventy players made it to Memphis (but only 69 are playing after Daniel Berger opted out) and the first of three legs at TPC Southwind in pursuit of the FedEx Cup and the gigantic payday that awaits the overall champion. Only 50 will move on from the St. Jude to the BMW Championship, which will be staged in St. Louis at Bellerive Country Club this year.
That makes Maverick McNealy the new "Bubble Boy" at No. 50 with Jordan Spieth, Max Homa and Jackson Koivun among the pros on the outside looking in who have work to do if they are going to advance.
This is arguably the biggest week of the playoffs because of what is at stake — the top 50 not only make their way to the next playoff event and another guaranteed payday but they lock up spots in all of the signature events for 2027. Being in those eight events offers a big head start for the 2027 season.
Here's a closer look at the cutline entering this week's no-cut, 72-hole event and what the minimum required finish for those players on the outside looking in of the top 50 to mathematically pass McNealy.

Jordan Spieth will surely wish that he had taken advice from Sir Nick Faldo way back in 2015.
Spieth made a huge splash on the professional golf scene when he won the John Deere classic when he was just 19 in 2013.
He then went on to win three major championships from 2015 to 2017 and by the time he was 28 in April 2022, he had 13 PGA Tour victories to his name.
However, Jordan Spieth has not recorded a win since then.

Jordan Spieth's last win on the PGA Tour came way back in April 2022 at the RBC Heritage.
Spieth's game has regressed badly since then, and the harder he works on his game, the more he seems to struggle.
There have been encouraging signs this season at times, but he always seems to scupper his chances of contending with one really poor round.
Remarkably, Jordan Spieth is still yet to record a top-10 finish in 19 starts on the PGA Tour in 2026.
This season, the 33-year-old from Dallas has been let down by a different part of his game each week.

DETROIT — The final field for the final Rocket Classic is set.
The PGA Tour announced Friday night the 141 players who are committed to teeing it up at Detroit Golf Club next week, when the eighth and final Rocket Classic will be played from July 30-Aug. 2.
There were no major changes with the final list of PGA Tour player commitments, from previous announcements, as the field continues to be highlighted by four players inside the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking, eight in the top 20, 21 in the top 50, and more than half of the top 100. There are 10 major champions. The field is arguably the best in the history of the Rocket Classic, and certainly the best since rival LIV Golf began playing and poaching in 2022.
Headliners include Jordan Spieth, Xander Schauffele and Brooks Koepka, all playing the Rocket for the first time, as well as world No. 3 Cameron Young, No. 5 Russell Henley, No. 7 Chris Gotterup and No. 9 Wyndham Clark, who won this year's U.S. Open. Michael Kim, world No. 57 who shot golf's magic number, 59, at the 3M Open on Friday, also is in.
World No. 24 Ryan Gerard was the lone notable new name on Friday's entry list, while Matt Kuchar was the lone notable absence from the previous commitments.

Detroit — Rocket Classic officials were crossing their fingers for one more big splash with the field for next week's tournament. And on Wednesday night, they sure got one.
Jordan Spieth will play in Detroit's PGA Tour tournament for the first time, tournament officials confirmed to The News.
Spieth, a three-time major champion who has won on the PGA Tour 13 times, pulled out of this week's 3M Open in Minnesota, leading to speculation he could make the Rocket Classic a late addition to his schedule with the PGA Tour playoffs looming. Spieth is 55th in the FedEx Cup standings, and while he's in good shape to make the first playoff event (top 70), the top 50 make the second playoff event and the top 30 make the huge-money Tour Championship.
The Rocket Classic, set for July 30-Aug. 2 at Detroit Golf Club, is the second-to-last regular-season tournament before the start of the PGA Tour playoffs.
Spieth, 32, hasn't won on the PGA Tour since 2022, but he remains a star and a big draw for fans. He joins headliners like Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele and Brooks Koepka among the 145-player field for the eighth and final Rocket Classic. Like Spieth, Schauffele and Koepka are playing in the Rocket Classic for the first time.

SOUTHPORT, England – Matt Kuchar was five holes away from immortality.
Five holes away at the 2017 British Open here at Royal Birkdale from having his name permanently inscribed on the Claret Jug, golf's oldest trophy, and a spot in the British Open field until he turns 60. Instead, he got steamrolled by Jordan Spieth and one of the great final-round flourishes in major championship history and failed to qualify for the 154th Open this week. From nearly being the Champion Golfer of the Year to not in the field since 2021 and never really sniffing the ******* le again.
"It felt like it was in my hands and all of a sudden Jordan Spieth put on a show and claimed it for himself," Kuchar tells Golfweek in a recent phone interview. "Listen, I got beat but it's tough when at some point you feel like you got that close. I think that makes it even tougher."
More: Golfweek's Father of the Year is Matt Kuchar, who found 'magic' in emotional golf victory
Birkdale was the site of Kuchar's first British Open in 1998 as the reigning U.S. Amateur champion, where he missed the cut as he did in 2008 but in 2017 he shot 65 out of the gate to make his presence felt in the battle for the Claret Jug.

Jordan Spieth has admitted that it has been unusual to return to Royal Birkdale and see some of the changes from when he won The Open Championship in Southport back in 2017.
Few would have ever imagined that Spieth would head back to Birkdale still awaiting his fourth major victory. But unfortunately, the last few years have not been particularly kind to the Texan on the course.
It is more than four years since his most recent PGA Tour victory of any kind.
Perhaps more worryingly, Jordan Spieth has not finished a major inside the top 10 since The Masters in 2023.
He will hope that returning to the scene of one of his greatest triumphs will inspire Spieth to roll back the years over the coming days.

Royal Birkdale boasts two notable superlatives for Jordan Spieth.
Spieth's greatest shot and putt in a career full of great ones? Both came on these storied Southport links nearly a decade ago, in 2017, when Spieth captured the Claret Jug, his third and most recent major trophy, with an iconic closing stretch.
While Spieth's adventurous bogey on Birkdale's 13th hole, where he took a pair of drops that left him hitting his third shot from the practice range, gets talked about often, what Spieth did after that to eventually beat Matt Kuchar by three strokes on that Sunday afternoon is stuff of legends.
First, there was the stuffed 6-iron at the 199-yard, par-3 14th hole that lipped out before setting up a 5-foot birdie.
Then came the 48-foot eagle at the par-5 15th, where Spieth famously yelled at caddie Michael Greller to, "Go get that!"

It is officially Open Championship week and time for the 154th edition of golf’s oldest major, which is being held at Royal Birkdale for the 11th time.
But first, American pros headed over early for some links prep and went about getting on some of the U.K.’s many gems. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler had some extra time on his hands after missing the cut at the Genesis Scottish Open and took in North Berwick Golf Club, one of several great courses in East Lothian, and with son Bennett in tow.
Over in England, Akshay Bhatia and Rickie Fowler explored one of the neighboring Southport courses, where Tommy Fleetwood cut his teeth in the game at West Lancs Golf Club. Very cool of them to bring junior member George Crompton along for the ride. Imagine he won't soon forget that experience.
Jordan Spieth, the 2017 British Open champion here at Royal Birkdale the last time it hosted the Open, was out and about getting familiar with links golf and took in a round at Formby Golf Club. "Always a privilege to see one of the game's great champions enjoying our links," the club posted on its social media accounts.
But the pros weren't the only ones squeezing in some golf while overseas. Jamie Kennedy of Golf Digest had the shot of his life, a hole-in-one at the par-4 18th at North Berwick and the bartender happened to be taking a time-lapse of the sunset at the time.

SOUTHPORT, England – There won’t be another Jordan Spieth miracle bogey at Royal Birkdale this time around at the 154th British Open.
That’s because the area right of right at the par-4 13th hole will be considered out of bounds. Instead of the range as it was in 2017 when Spieth was the Champion Golfer of the Year, that ****** e will be utilized as the site of the fan village with OB beginning at the cart path to the right of the dunes.
Spieth’s opening comment in his press conference after winning in 2017 was, “We’re going to skip the first twelve holes, right?”, referring to his adventurous bogey-five on the 13th, followed by a finish of birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie, par to win by three strokes.
Who can forget Spieth fanning his tee shot so far right at 13 that it struck the noggin of a fan and ricocheted into an unplayable lie on the side of a dune. Then it took about a half an hour to determine his relief. Spieth ended up hitting his third shot from the club’s driving range.
That’s not the only change to the hole since the last Open was here. There is a new left tee box that alters the angle to a fairway pinched in by new bunkering to the right and an expanded dune dividing the 13th from the fan village and a ditch that runs the length of the hole to the left. The greenside bunker that Spieth had to pitch over for his fourth shot also has been pushed back nearer to the green. Spieth pitched to 10 feet and canned the putt for an improbable bogey to fall only one stroke back of Matt Kuchar. Then he rifled a 6-iron that lipped out to 5 feet at the par-3 14th. That hole had been dropped from the layout, the green saved as part of a short-game practice area. The new 14th is what used to be the par-5 15th, remodeled into a 602-yard par 5 with the green moved back some 30 yards from its previous location. The 241-yard, par-3 15th is a new short hole created to diversify the directions and lengths of the course’s par 3s.

It's considered one of the most famous bogeys in major championship history – Jordan Spieth's chaotic, 29-minute scene on Royal Birkdale's 13th hole during the 2017 Open that included Spieth taking an unplayable from the side of a massive dune and hitting his third shot from the club's driving range.
But such a '5' will never be emulated again – at least not this week.
As golf's oldest major returns to the Southport links, the lay of the land at No. 13 looks markedly different following a significant renovation in 2024 that altered at least portions of every hole on the property.
Jordan Spieth of the US tees off on the 13th, during a practise round a few days before the start of the 2026 Open Golf Championship at Royal Birkdale golf course near Southport in north-west England on July 12, 2026. (Photo by ANDY BUCHANAN / AFP via Getty Images) / RESTRICTED TO EDITORIAL USE
The differences start immediately on the 13th tee box, where that Sunday afternoon in 2017 saw Spieth, tied with playing competitor Matt Kuchar at the time, blow his drive nearly 100 yards right of the fairway. Upon making contact, Spieth's hands immediately went to his head in disbelief before he gave a brief point with his right index finger.

Take a look at some answers to frequently asked questions about The Open:
What you call it has historically depended on where you were. If you were in the U.S., you called it the British Open, just as Europeans refer to the PGA Championship as the U.S. PGA. Outside the U.S. it generally has been referred to as The Open Championship. The preferred name of the organizers is The Open.
It's the oldest golf championship, dating back to 1860.
There is a rotation – or "rota" – of courses used. Currently there are nine: Royal Birkdale, Royal St. George's, Royal Liverpool and Royal Lytham and St. Annes, all in England; Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland and St. Andrews, Carnoustie, Royal Troon and Muirfield, all in Scotland. Muirfield was removed from the rota in 2016 when members voted against allowing female members, but when the vote was reversed in 2017 it was allowed back in. Turnberry, site of Tom Watson's 1977 "Duel in the Sun" win over Jack Nicklaus and Watson's loss to Stewart Cink in 2009, is effectively not part of the rota. Then-R&A chief Martin Slumbers said in 2021 that The Open would not return to Turnberry "under current circumstances" (with Donald Trump as its owner).
Royal Birkdale in Southport, England. Birkdale has previously hosted 10 Opens. The winners have been: Jordan Spieth (2017), Padraig Harrington (2008), Mark O'Meara (1998), Ian Baker-Finch (1991), Tom Watson (1983), Johnny Miller (1976), Lee Trevino (1971), Arnold Palmer (1961), Peter Thomson (1954 and 1965).

Smylie Kaufman has explained why he could see the likes of Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed proving to be ideal partners for Chris Gotterup at the Presidents Cup following his victory at the John Deere Classic this past week.
Gotterup has surely secured his spot on Brandt Snedeker’s team at Medinah in September. The 26-year-old has now won for a third time on the PGA Tour this season.
It was a stunning performance from Gotterup to secure victory at TPC Deere Run on Sunday, with the youngster posting a 62 in the final round to jump to the top of the leaderboard.
It was clearly a mistake from Keegan Bradley to overlook Gotterup for the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage last September. He had won the Scottish Open and put himself in contention at The Open Championship.
The Bethpage setup also appeared to be absolutely crying out for a player like Gotterup.

Jordan Spieth was at it again on Thursday in the first round of the John Deere Classic. Spieth’s group teed off on the 10th hole at 8:35 AM and he was 1-under by the time he stepped onto the 15th tee box. That’s when he did the most Jordan Spieth thing possible and hit his tee shot so far right it ended up on the wrong side of the cart path.
When Spieth walked up to find his ball and take his second shot he found a white flag next to a garbage can and a Michelob Ultra-branded recycling bin where patrons were supposed to put their empties. The ball had somehow ended up underneath the recycling. Thus, we got the visual of Jordan Spieth dragging both receptacles to the cart path curb like it was trash day.
It’s an incredible visual. He looks like a dad realizing his kid didn’t take out the trash and can’t decide if it’s even worth his effort to move them at this point because he’s pretty sure he already heard the truck go by.
But not Jordan Spieth. He got the OK to move the bins and then he asked just exactly how much he could move his ball. And he stepped up and hit it within a few feet. And then he made the birdie putt.
How many other golfers in the world can make birdie from underneath a garbage can?

Jordan Spieth can get up and down from a trash can.
No, literally, he can – and make that two trash cans.
Spieth birdied the par-4 15th hole Thursday at TPC Deere Run, his sixth hole of his first round at the John Deere Classic, despite driving his ball underneath a pair of trash cans.
“Do I get to do anything about that?” Spieth asked a rules official after lifting the cardboard receptacle, which sat next to a plastic recycling bin, to reveal his ball in the rough.
“No, you have to play it,” the official responded.
