You never like to see injury news in sports, even when it happens to one of your key rivals. On Tuesday, the Big Ten basketball landscape received some huge, awful news as Illinois revealed that star player David Mirkovic underwent foot surgery on July 31.
This is some seismic news that will almost certainly reshape the Big Ten basketball landscape and Michigan State's schedule, as Mirkovic was poised to be one of the star players out of the Big Ten this year for Illinois and a projected NBA Draft lottery pick in 2027, if he decided to leave school. Mirkovic averaged 13.3 points per game as a freshman and even had a 27-point, 21-rebound game early in the season against Colgate, adding to his hype.
We still don't know the extent of what his recovery will entail, so it's hard to speculate. The team did say the surgery was successful and he is expected to make a full recovery, but we don't know he will return to college this year, or ever, at this point.

Tom Izzo has a clear idea of who will be starting at power forward for the Spartans this season. But he wouldn't completely commit to that spot being locked down during a recent interview.
Izzo joined national college basketball ****** yst Jon Rothstein on his show on Tuesday to discuss a number of things surrounding the Spartans and college basketball as a whole. During the interview, Izzo stated sophomore Cam Ward "should be" the starting power forward for the Spartans this season. But there's still room for improvement.
"(Ward) still gotta keep improving his shot," Izzo said during the interview. "But he's really improving his ability to put it on the floor, defend people and become a much better rebounder."
Michigan State has an opening at power forward with senior Jaxon Kohler not expected to be with the Spartans this upcoming season. He may end up having a fifth year of eligibility, but he is reportedly being pursued by BYU, Kansas and Kentucky as a transfer addition.
As a true freshman, Ward showed signs of being the next great Spartan at power forward. He ended the season averaging 5.1 points, 4.2 rebound and 0.5 blocks across roughly 15 minutes per game.

The World Junior Summer Showcase took place at the end of July, a pivotal event that serves as a part of the process to select the roster for the IIHF World Junior Championship. In the event, almost ten connections to the MSU program skated and took part in the showcase in Windsor.
Following the conclusion of the event, Helena Hsieh, a regional scout for Elite Prospects, announced her standout performers of the showcase and a couple of Spartans made the list.
Incoming freshman Ethan Belchetz was one of those standouts, performing for team Canada. The Utah first round pick is slated for a big year with MSU.
Next, future Spartan Brooks Rogowski was another standout, this time for team USA. The Vancouver draft pick is expected to join MSU in 2027-28, but he is a candidate for the open slot left by Nikita Kelpov, being a late addition to the roster this year.

On his X page, college basketball ******* yst Jon Rothstein announced that Izzo was going to be the gest on the Inside College Basketball Now podcast, run by CBS Sports. The podcast is slated to take place on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
Izzo will join Rothstein to talk about the state of college athletics, while also previewing the upcoming Spartans season.

This may have been just a formality at this point, but that doesn't mean it's still not good to hear. According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, by way of Tom Izzo himself, projected Michigan State starter Kaleb Glenn has been cleared for all basketball related activites.
Glenn was the big transfer addition to the team last year, but a torn patellar tendon last summer derailed his season and postponed his debut. The Spartans were very patient and cautious with Glenn's recovery, and it seems like all restrictions have now been lifted and he's ready to contribute this season.
On paper, Glenn is everything Michigan State has needed on the wing for years. He's 6'7", 200-pounds, and shot over 40-percent from three in his last season played at FAU, where he transferred for one season after starting his career at Louisville.
Glenn has been a bit of a mystery element for this team as we aren't sure what to expect from him post-injury, but having him healthy adds an interesting dynamic to the roster moving forward.

A former Spartan will reportedly explore a return to college basketball following the recent injunction that allows a fifth year of eligibility for players in the 2022 class.
Former Michigan State guard Tre Holloman could return for another season with the Spartans this upcoming season. Jamie Shaw of On3 reported on Saturday that Holloman will be "exploring college options" for next season following the notable injunction that was approved on Friday.
Holloman played his first three years of his collegiate career with the Spartans before transferring to NC State for this past season. He appeared in 106 games during his three years with the Spartans, averaging 9.1 points and 3.7 ****** ists per game during his final season in 2024-25.
In his lone year with NC State, Holloman appeared in 32 games (27 of which were starts). He ended the season averaging 9.2 points and 2.1 ****** ists per game with the Wolfpack.
Holloman has been back in the East Lansing, Mich. area in recent weeks, playing in the Moneyball Pro-Am event and presumably hanging out with Spartan players. It'll be interesting to see if Michigan State would welcome him back to the program as a reserve point guard or if Holloman will look elsewhere for a starting role in his final year of college hoops.

A former Spartan will pursue the opportunity to play again at the college level, and he has some teams in mind for where he could end up.
Former Michigan State Spartans forward Jaxon Kohler will reportedly explore a return to college basketball for a fifth season, with a trio of new teams in the mix. According to college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, Kohler is receiving interest from Kansas, Kentucky and BYU. A return to Michigan State is also considered as "possible" by Rothstein.
Jaxon Kohler tells me that he will explore a return to college for a fifth year and is receiving interest from the following programs:

Kansas
Kentucky
BYU

Kohler averaged 12.5 PPG and 8.9 RPG last season at Michigan State.

A return to East Lansing is also possible.
Kohler wrapped up his four-year career with the Spartans this past season, averaging 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game to help Michigan State reach the Sweet 16. He was not selected in the 2026 NBA Draft but competed with the Utah Jazz in the NBA summer leagues.
Kohler has been rumored to be in close contact with BYU so the ****** umption is that if he doesn't return to Michigan State then it'll be with the local Cougars. Without any inside information, I would be surprised if he doesn't end up playing for BYU next season (assuming things work out in his favor where he gets to play another season of college hoops).

Michigan State hockey continues to roll on the recruiting trail.
The Spartans picked up a five-star commitment on Saturday, with forward Jack Trupiano announcing his commitment from St. Clair Shores, Mich. Trupiano's commitment to Michigan State was reported by Puck Preps on social media.
Trupiano is a member of the 2010 class and will play for the United States National Team Development Program (US NTDP) this upcoming season. He is ranked as the No. 11 American forward in the class.
Trupiano is listed at 6-foot-0 and 183 pounds, and is 16 years old. It is ***** umed he has two years with the US NTDP before he'll join the Spartans.

Is Michigan State basketball a legit national championship contender? One popular podcast recently discussed the likelihood of this happening and how the Spartans can end up cutting down the nets in Detroit next April.
The Field of 68, one of the most prominent national college basketball podcasts, recently discussed whether or not Michigan State is a true national championship contender this upcoming season. That question was met with plenty of reasons from the panel for why it's possible and why Spartans fans should be excited this season.
Jeff Goodman stated during the roughly six-minute video that Spartans head coach Tom Izzo loves the team he has built and is excited about the group he's carrying into the season. The panel also discussed how the return of All-American Jeremy Fears Jr. gives Michigan State the best point guard in the game, which keeps them relevant at the top of the country.
Ultimately, the panel agreed Michigan State is going to need some of their lesser known players to step up to help carry the weight from Fears and Coen Carr. But overall, it's clear the Field of 68 crew is confident in what Michigan State has **** embled heading into the season.

CHICAGO − Pat Fitzgerald is back in the Windy City. Only this time, he's wearing green instead of purple.
The first-year Michigan State football coach returned to his roots to speak at the Big Ten Media Days on Wednesday, July 29. Fitzgerald, a native of nearby Midlothian, Illinois, became an All-American and College Football Hall of Fame linebacker at Northwestern before going on to coach his alma mater from 2006-22. The Spartans hired him Dec. 1 to replace Jonathan Smith, who was fired after two seasons in East Lansing.
MSU is picked to finish 17th in the 18-team Big Ten in the USA Today preseason poll. The Spartans went 4-8 last season and are 33-38 overall and just 18-35 in conference games since Mark Dantonio retired after the 2019 season. They have missed a bowl game in five of those six seasons and have not played in the postseason since 2021.
Fitzgerald was 110-101 in his 17 seasons at Northwestern with a 65-76 Big Ten record and two West Division **** les. He was dismissed prior to the 2023 season.

Michigan State baseball is going to rely heavily on Logan Pikur next season. Over his first three seasons in East Lansing, he appeared in 64 games on the mound, making eight starts. When his senior year begins in 2027, he will be one of the most highly relied upon pitchers for the Spartans.
In preparation for his senior season, the West Bloomfield (MI) native is competing in the highly regarded Cape Cod League for the Falmouth Commodores. Through nine appearances with the team, Pikur has been solid, holding a 3.45 ERA, but he may have just had his best appearance.
Pikur worked six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit to go along with two walks and three strike outs. With the Spartans needing starting pitching, this is the type of outing that shows what Pikur could be in his senior year.

A popular college football social media account believes the Spartans will reach a bowl game for the first time in five seasons.
CFB Home -- a social media account with nearly 125,000 followers on X -- released their game-by-game predictions for the Spartans this upcoming season, and they are higher on Michigan State than most. CFB Home has Michigan State finishing the 2026 season with a 6-6 overall record and 4-5 mark in Big Ten play.
CFB Home has Michigan State opening the year with a pair of victories over Toledo and Eastern Michigan. From there, they see the Spartans dropping a pair of games against Notre Dame and Nebraska before winning ripping off three straight wins against Wisconsin, Illinois and Northwestern.
Michigan State is sitting at 5-2 overall and 3-1 in Big Ten play following this impressive three-game winning streak. But from there, things get rough, with CFB Home predicting four straight losses against UCLA, Michigan, Washington and Oregon. Luckily, Michigan State is able to beat to Rutgers on the final game of the season to reach bowl eligibility.
Michigan State is entering the season with low expectations. The Spartans' wins over/under total is set at 4.5, meaning CFB Home has the Spartans clearing the over by two games this fall.

Of the many shocking moments in Michigan State athletics this decade, perhaps the most surprising was the decision of MSU basketball star Tre Holloman to leave Michigan State by way of the transfer portal for NC State. Holloman was a beloved Spartan, and MSU fans were in uproar over the decision in what became an extremely divisive moment in MSU basketball history.
Now, Tre Holloman is back in Lansing, where he lives and raises his daughter, and was in attendance at this week's Moneyball Pro-Am. Naturally, Holloman was asked about the decision to leave, along with a potential return if the NCAA allows players like him and Jaxon Kohler to have one more year of eligibility.

Michigan State football is set to play a pair of Mid-American Conference (MAC) teams this fall -- so where do they rank in their league's preseason poll?
The MAC held its annual preseason media day event on Wednesday, which meant the coaches preseason poll was released as well. The Spartans are set to open the season against Toledo and then play Eastern Michigan the following week, which got me personally wondering how those teams stack up against their peers.
In the eyes of the coaches, Toledo came in as the preseason No. 3 team in the MAC behind only Western Michigan and Miami (OH). Eastern Michigan was a few spots lower in the poll, ranking at No. 7 in the preseason poll.
Michigan State currently sits as a 11.5-point favorite over Toledo in the season-opener on September 4 from Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Mich. The betting line for the Spartans' matchup against Eastern Michigan on September 12 has not yet been released, but one would ****** ume that number would be higher than the line for the Spartans-Rockets matchup.
Toledo is annually a top team in the MAC but is going through a coaching change that could shift where they typically land in the standings. Eastern Michigan is also became a regular middle-to-upper-tier team in the MAC under head coach Chris Creighton. So these rankings in the preseason poll align with what we have come to expect from both schools.

HOLT – Tre Holloman arrived wearing a Michigan State sweatshirt with the same Spartan head logo he famously protected and kissed. The moment that brought him heaps of adoration.
From the same fanbase that, two months later, turned on him in 2025 when the team captain shockingly announced he would be entering the transfer portal after three seasons at MSU.
Admittedly, things did not go as planned when the combo guard left Tom Izzo's program and landed at North Carolina State with coach Will Wade. But on Tuesday, July 21, Holloman returned to mid-Michigan after a stint with the Orlando Magic in the NBA Summer League to get some run with and against his former teammates at the Moneyball Pro-Am.
And to profess his appreciation for Izzo, the Spartans and the community he now lives in as a new father.
"This is home for me," Holloman said before taking the court at Holt High. "I was here for three years. My daughter's from Lansing, and I live in Lansing. So this is home."

Michigan State basketball is heading out west during the holiday season for a massive non-conference game.
The Spartans announced on Monday that they'll play Gonzaga in a neutral site game in Palm Springs, Calif on December 19. The notable non-conference game will be part of the Acrisure Series.
The game time for this matchup has not yet be announced.
Michigan State last played Gonzaga in 2022 when the Bulldogs edged them out for a one-point win in a neutral site game in San Diego, Calif. Both Michigan State and Gonzaga have been regulars in the NCAA Tournament for the last nearly 30 seasons and should both again be top tier teams this season.
With the announcement of this matchup against Gonzaga, we now know Michigan State is set to play at least three premiere non-conference matchups: Duke in the Champions Classic (in Chicago), Arkansas on Thanksgiving (in Detroit) and Gonzaga. There has also been a report that Michigan State will play at Tennessee this year, but that has not been officially announced yet by the school.

Michigan State basketball is pursuing one of the top point guards in the 2027 class.
Antonio Pemberton of Hanover, Mass. announced on Sunday that he's received an offer from Michigan State. Pemberton made the offer from the Spartans known by posting on his social media X account on Sunday.
Pemberton is a high-end four-star prospect in the 2027 class, with a recruiting rating of 98.47 in 247Sports' composite system. He ranks as the No. 9 point guard and No. 35 overall prospect in the class. He is also listed as the top overall player from Massachusetts in the class.
Michigan State joins a list of nearly 20 schools to extend an offer to Pemberton, according to 247Sports. He also holds notable offers from Boston College, Utah, Auburn, Marquette, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Maryland, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Penn State, Tennessee, Rutgers, Georgetown and Xavier.
At this time, Utah and Marquette are signaled as the top contenders for Pemberton, with both schools slated to host him for an official visit later this year. It'll be interesting, though, if Michigan State joining the mix will change things for Pemberton's recruitment.

The week of July 5-11 saw regional softball competition kick into high gear for teams from the Ames area.
Roland-Story, the No. 12 team in Class 3A, advanced to the 3A Region 1 championship game with wins over Iowa Falls-Alden (2-0) and Pella Christian (13-1). Ames saw its season come to a close with an 8-0 setback against No. 10 Des Moines Roosevelt in the 5A Region 3 semifinals on July 11 in Des Moines.
Gilbert defeated Nevada in the 4A Region 2 quarterfinals, 2-1, before dropping an 11-9 slugfest to Newton in the semifinals. Ballard also reached the 4A Region 2 semifinals, earning a 6-1 win over Webster City in the quarterfinals before suffering a 12-4 setback to No. 2 Carlisle in the semifinals.
Collins-Maxwell saw its season come to a close with an 11-5 loss to No. 3 St. Edmond in the 1A Region 3 semifinals. The Spartans defeated North Mahaska in the quarterfinals, 9-5, on July 8.
Colo-NESCO fell to North Mahaska by a 12-0 score in the 1A Region 3 first round on July 6.

Next up in the opponent preview series is Rutgers' second game of the season against Boston College. This will be a very intriguing game for the Scarlet Knights for several reasons. The game will be the Eagles' annual Red Bandanna game in honor of BC alum and hero Welles Crowther and will also take place on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Rutgers also lost 37 alumni in the tragic attacks at the World Trade Center and has honored them in a previous game that took place on the anniversary of 9/11 when they defeated Syracuse 17-7 in 2021.
In addition to that, this will be Rutgers' first road game of the season, and it will be the most intriguing nonconference matchup. The Knights have been very solid against ACC competition over the past few seasons, including a 22-21 come-from-behind victory the last time they visited Chestnut Hill, opening the 2022 season.
Rutgers will suit up a former Boston College quarterback this year, as Dylan Lonergan, a former Alabama and BC signal-caller, transferred to the Knights this offseason. Whether he will take the field against his former team is to be decided, as AJ Surace and Lonergan are in a quarterback battle that is expected to last through training camp.
With that being said, let us shift our attention to the Boston College Eagles!
There is nowhere to go but up for Boston College, as the Eagles very well have been the worst Power Four team in all of college football last year with a 2-10 record. After routing FCS Fordham 66-10, things turned ugly quickly for BC, as they fell to Big Ten bottom-dweller Michigan State in what was a thrilling 42-40 victory for the Spartans in East Lansing.

Michigan State athletics is undergoing a massive overhaul. After spending just over 400 days on the job, J Batt is leaving his post as athletic director in East Lansing to take over Kentucky's athletic director position. Recently, a buyout from Kentucky to MSU has been paid, and Batt has been given a start date of July 28.
With change now inevitable, Michigan State President Kevin Guskiewicz has named an interim athletic director, giving the role to Jon Palumbo.
Palumbo has served as Michigan State's Executive Deputy Athletic Director and Chief Operating Officer, while also playing a key role in the launch of Spartan Ventures, serving as CEO. In his career, Palumbo started as an ***** ociate AD at American, Maryland and VCU before getting his first AD job with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Spending 2018-2022 with TAMU-CC, he led the school to some of it's most successful years in history. Following his tenure there, and joining MSU, he served as the executive deputy athletics director and chief operating officer at Georgia Tech.
A national search will begin for the next Michigan State athletic director, but getting this role as interim will be a great interview for Palumbo's efforts to get the permanent job.

Michigan State basketball will head to Milwaukee in late October for an intriguing exhibition game against a Big East opponent.
The Spartans announced on Thursday that they'll be playing an exhibition game against Marquette on the road in late October. According to the announcement, the game will take place on October 25 in Milwaukee.
It is not yet known if the game will be televised for fans to watch from home.
Michigan State played a road exhibition game at fellow Big East squad UConn last year, and was expected to host the Huskies for an exhibition game this season. That has yet to be announced, though, so we will have to wait and see if that matchup will still be happening this fall.
Marquette has been a regular top tier team in the Big East recently, with the Golden Eagles missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time in five years this past season. Michigan State and Marquette last met in the NCAA Tournament in 2023 when the Spartans upset the Golden Eagles to reach the Sweet 16.

Michigan State basketball will officially be returning to your Thanksgiving menu this year.
Earlier reports from this offseason were confirmed on Wednesday when Michigan State formally announced an upcoming Thanksgiving Day matchup with Arkansas this season. The game will be played at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Mich., with tipoff scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET on November 26.
The game will be televised on CBS and follow the Detroit Lions' annual Thanksgiving matchup that kicks off earlier in the day.
In early April, both Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo and Arkansas head coach John Calipari stated this game would be happening -- which was a notable twist from the original agreement. Michigan State hosted Arkansas in a ranked matchup last year at the Breslin Center, and was originally scheduled to head to Fayetteville, Ark. this upcoming season as a the second-leg of a home-and-home series. That return game by the Spartans has now been postponed for at least one season now that the two will meet in the Motor City this year.
This is a super fun matchup between two teams that will start next season near the top of the rankings. This is one of many tough non-conference games for the Spartans this upcoming season, and will be a treat on Thanksgiving for Spartans to watch on the national stage.

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas basketball will play on Thanksgiving in 2026. It will be the third consecutive year John Calipari and the Razorbacks fill Turkey Day television screens across the country.
Arkansas officially announced a primetime matchup with Michigan State on Wednesday, July 8. Tipoff between the Hogs and Spartans is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CT on CBS. The game will be played at Little Caesars Arena, home of the Detroit Pistons.
"We are grateful for the opportunity CBS is affording us by playing on Thanksgiving Day for a third straight year,” Calipari said. “Our program has benefited from playing in this game both on the court and from the national exposure. Last year, our Thanksgiving Day game on CBS was the most viewed college basketball game of the season, and one of the most-watched regular-season games in over 30 years."
According to Nielsen, the Thanksgving game between Arkansas and Duke in Chicago last year averaged 6.813 million viewers, marking the largest regular-season college basketball audience on any network in more than three decades. The previous high came on Feb. 21, 1993, when Purdue faced Indiana on CBS (7.225 million).
It won't be a true road game, but Arkansas will be playing in Michigan State's backyard. The two teams were originally supposed to play in Fayetteville this winter after the Razorbacks made a trip to Michigan State for a nonconference game in the first week of the 2025-26 season. The Spartans won 69-66.

Gary Harris is headed back to Michigan. On Tuesday night, the former Michigan State basketball star, who spent last season with the Milwaukee Bucks, was traded to the Detroit Pistons along with Taurean Prince for two second-round picks and former Michigan Wolverine Caris LeVert.
Harris' NBA journey started in 2014 when he was drafted by the Chicago Bulls (but traded to the Denver Nuggets) with the No. 19 pick. The former First-team All-Big Ten shooting guard has had a long and lucrative NBA career as a sniper, playing solid wing defense at least earlier in his career. He will now join a Pistons team that was one game away from the conference finals, although it's unclear if he will ever suit up for Detroit or if he will be moved elsewhere.
With the move, the Pistons add another capable shooter and move off of Caris LeVert's deal, which could open up room for them to make another acquisition this summer.

Tom Izzo said three weeks ago that Kevin Guskiewicz was the best president Michigan State might have ever had.
Monday’s news that Guskiewicz is reneging on Clemson’s presidency to stay in East Lansing must have thrilled the hall of fame basketball coach.
In a statement released by Michigan State, Izzo called for a “moment of unity” among members of the Michigan State community now that Guskiewicz is staying on as president.
“As President Guskiewicz reaffirms his commitment to Michigan State University, this is a chance for every Spartan to do the same,” Izzo said in the statement. “For the 600,000 living alums, and everyone who calls themselves a Spartan, this is a moment for unity.
"Growth requires new ideas and allows for different perspectives, but we all must share a singular purpose of making Michigan State the greatest possible university it can be. It’s a responsibility we owe Spartans past, present, and future.”

A sign of the college football season nearing is almost here, and we now have some more key details on that particular event as well.
Big Ten Media Days are only three weeks away, which is in a lot of ways the unofficial start of the college football season. The three-day event (July 28 - 30) will feature coaches and players from each of the 18 schools, with the media availability spread out across the event.
So when will Michigan State be in attendance during the event? We now have that detail finalized.
Michigan State will be part of the second day of the event on July 29. As far as player representation, Michigan State will be bringing quarterback Alessio Milivojevic, linebacker Jordan Hall and safety Nikai Martinez. New head coach Pat Fitgerald will also be in attendance.

When Harry Schwenke took over Maple Mountain’s football coaching duties last spring after the departure of Kalin Hall, nine of his starters left, eight of whom went to Orem High School.
Only one of the big stars stayed: Big defensive end Uhila Wolfgramm.
This was a loyalty test. For Wolfgramm, it was his 300 Spartans and the Battle of Thermopylae moment. He chose Maple Mountain’s banner. He stayed home because he believed it was important to be with those he played with who remained.
Last Thursday, Schwenke saw Wolfgramm choose to play at BYU over Oklahoma, a decision to stay close to home and build his legacy from Provo.
Although this decision came down to the wire, Schwenke saw what he believed was a core value in what makes Wolfgramm tick.

While many Michigan State basketball fans are out celebrating the Fourth of July, MSU's staff is still hitting the recruiting trail. On Saturday, 2027 point guard Jaxson Davis announced on his Instagram page that he received an offer from the Spartans.
Davis, a 4-star point guard, is the No. 39-ranked player in the 2027 recruiting class and the No. 12-ranked point guard in that class. He's also the top-ranked player in Kansas, where he plays for Monarch Academy in Kansas City. Davis has been heavily recruited by Iowa, along with schools like Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan, Purdue, and several others.
Davis is the fourth player MSU has offered in the 2027 class, joining shooting guard Kingston Thomas, combo guard Joshua Tyson, and center Jadyn Jenkins on the Spartans' offer list for that year.
