EAST LANSING — Michigan State coach Pat Fitzgerald thinks he may have his most important defensive player back for next week's game against Notre Dame.
In his postgame press conference after a 35-7 win over Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 12, Fitzgerald said that starting middle linebacker Jordan Hall was not cleared for the game by medical personnel but could be available for Week 3's rivalry game in South Bend.
"Jordan was really close playing today," Fitzgerald said. "Medical team told us that he was not cleared here late in the week. We made that decision collectively together to make sure that we think about his health, safety, and well-being. And I expect if we practice tomorrow that he'll be ready to go."
Hall made 88 tackles last season to lead Michigan State's defense and is a two-time captain. The senior made four tackles in 25 snaps in Week 1's win over Toledo but came on and off the field with a right elbow injury sustained on the second drive of the season. He walked into Spartan Stadium on Saturday with a brace on that right arm.

Two injured Detroit Tigers pitchers are taking one step closer to returning.
Before Detroit's game against the Colorado Rockies on Friday, Sept. 11, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said that right-hander Jack Flaherty will throw a simulated game on Saturday, at Comerica Park. Flaherty is expected to pitch 2-3 simulated innings against Tigers batters from the mound before the afternoon game against the Rockies.
Flaherty last pitched competitively for Triple-A Toledo on Sept. 6, allowing one hits and zero runs over 1⅓ innings in a rehab start in Toledo. The righty has been rehabbing from right flexor tendon inflammation and last pitched in the majors in a start against the Chicago Cubs on July 20.
Hank Greenberg won the World Series with the Detroit Tigers in 1935 and 1945. He's a Hall of Fame slugger and won the American League MVP award twice.

As Justin Steele and the Chicago Cubs looked at how much time was left in the season and how much further the lefty had to go in his rehab, they came to the realization that starting was no longer an option for this season. If Steele was going to help the Cubs in the big leagues this season, it was going to have to come out of the bullpen.
"We just didn't have enough time to get built up to start," Steele said in an interview with the Des Moines Register on Sept. 10.
The Chicago Cubs ace allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts in two innings out of the bullpen against Toledo in a rehabilitation ****** ignment outing with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs at Principal Park on Sept. 10.
"I feel good," Steele said afterward. "Not giving up too hard of contact. I'd like my velo to be a little bit better but it's part of the process."
The process has been a long one for Steele, an All-Star for the Cubs in 2023. The southpaw, who hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2025, underwent Tommy John surgery and was originally slated to return to the mound sometime at the midway point of 2026.

Michigan State football got the 2026 season started with a 30-20 win over Toledo. The Spartans, playing their first game under new head coach Pat Fitzgerald, got the tenure started right with a victory.
While it was a double digit victory, things were not always pretty for the Spartans, who needed to overcome a small deficit in the fourth quarter after having a very disappointing third quarter. In the end, though, the Spartans were victorious and are 1-0 on the season.
On defense, it is an interesting unit to evaluate. The Spartans did give up 20 points, and 273 yards of offense, but most of that damage was done on five individual plays that accounted for over 75-percent of the Rockets offensive output. All in all, the Spartans got the job done, and got stops when they mattered most.
After the game, and evaluating the film, Pro Football Focus (Subscription Required) gave out their grades for the Spartans in the game.

CLEVELAND – Better late than never.
Lefty Brant Hurter, a vital piece of the Tigers' bullpen the last two seasons, was activated off the injured list Sept. 6.
"We've finally got nine relievers," manager AJ Hinch said. "We haven't had that in a while."
It was a pretty nice birthday present for Hurter, who turned 28 Sunday. He has been out since May 23 with lumbar spine inflammation. He's been healthy for several weeks but his rehab ***** ignment was extended to eight outings with Triple-A Toledo because of performance issues.
He struggled to get his velocity back over 90 mph on his sinker. But he seemed back to form in his last two outings.

CLEVELAND – Jack Flaherty is on his way back to the Detroit Tigers.
The 30-year-old right-hander will begin a rehab ******* ignment with Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Sept. 6.
"Short stint," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said on Saturday before the Tigers played the Cleveland Guardians. "Basically, like another live BP, but we're going to have it in competition. So he may only go one inning. He may get two ups. We're not sure."
Flaherty is rehabbing from right flexor tendon inflammation, and has been throwing live bullpens in recent weeks while traveling with the Tigers, with fastball velocity around 93 mph, according to Hinch.
"The reality is setting in that it's going to be really hard to build him all the way back up into that five, six, or seven-inning pitcher," Hinch said Wednesday in Minneapolis. "But that doesn't mean that we won't be more creative with him if the recovery continues."

The Detroit Tigers have another injury concern involving one of the organization's best young hitters.
Top prospect Josue Briceño has been placed on Triple-A Toledo's seven-day injured list after leaving an Aug. 29 game following an awkward play at second base.
Briceño considered advancing from second on a fly ball before scrambling back toward the bag. After being tagged out following a partial slide, the 21-year-old immediately grabbed at his right foot before eventually getting back to his feet. He was removed from the game the following inning. MLB's latest prospect injury report still lists the specific injury as TBA. MLB's latest update on Briceño's injury
That means it would be premature to label this an ankle sprain, or anything else, until Detroit provides a formal diagnosis.
The timing is especially disappointing because Briceño had already lost a huge chunk of 2026 after undergoing surgery on his right wrist in March.

Yes, there is such a thing as a good 5-5 start – at least for now, considering how insane it is to try figuring out all these teams with mostly new players.

What's so good about it? Going 3-2 yesterday was fine, and over the first two runs, one loss was that horrific Hawaii beat against Stanford, another came in the final seconds of Illinois-UAB, and then there's the whopper – thinking Rutgers would destroy UMass. Historically shocking whiff, cap tipped, moving on.

Ahead of his first game as an opening-day starter, Michigan State quarterback Alessio Milivojevic spoke with the media about the team's readiness for Friday night's opener against Toledo, which is also Pat Fitzgerald's debut as head coach.
"There is excitement for every football game, but it just feels different," Milivojevic said in the SpartanMag video above. "It's hard to explain; I'm just ready to get back out there Friday and play."
With a roster that is mostly transfers and first-year players, the Spartans are looking to finally test themselves against a real opponent. They can practice together as much as they want, but they can't prove anything until game time.
"I think guys are just ready to go; the desire to get out there, you can feel it," Milivojevic said. "Guys are practicing 100% every day, ready to play someone other than our own team."
After going through training camp and the first half of last season as the backup, Milivojevic got a full offseason as the expected starter. Practicing with the other starters, instead of being plugged in halfway through the season, has made him more comfortable reading his receivers.

East Lansing — Michigan State could win enough games to earn a bowl bid in Pat Fitzgerald's first year at the helm. The Spartans could also finish worse than they did last season.
Heading into Friday's opener against Toledo, one thinks Michigan State's offense might be a little better with a retooled offensive line and a star running back in Cam Edwards. One thinks the defense will benefit from having Jordan Hall and Nikai Martinez running the show, and a crop of adequate starters who are healthy. However, ***** ody knows until pads start cracking, crowds start roaring and TV networks cram as many ads as they can into mandatory commercial breaks. I think even Fitzgerald is curious to see just what he has on his hands once his guys line up against somebody else.
With a roster full of transfers and a new coaching staff leading the way, what exactly Michigan State has to work with this season is unknown — especially compared to the rest of the Big Ten. And it's that comparison where things have gotten tricky for the Spartans in four straight losing seasons.
The great challenge for MSU has been to make some noise in conference play, in which it is 9-27 the past four years and went 1-8 last season. It's a bleak record for a program that once put fear into opponents who walked into Spartan Stadium and proceeded to crawl out. Fitzgerald's task is to make this program scary again. Frightening to some, that process might take some time — longer than some may be willing to wait.
Where Michigan State benefits this season is its schedule. Five of its opponents are ranked in the bottom half of USA Today's preseason Big Ten poll. Likewise, using that poll the Spartans tie for the fourth weakest schedule behind Penn State, Illinois and UCLA. That doesn't consider travel nor the usual attrition of injuries, but it does show that there are a lot of what should be winnable games.

Priority Dispatch was founded in Cincinnati in 1973. Diamond Expedited began serving the greater Chicago area in 1995. The companies, which were bought from the same individual, also cover Columbus, Cleveland, Dayton and Toledo, Ohio; Indianapolis; Detroit and Milwaukee, with 43 employees and more than 500 independent-contractor drivers. Their combined delivery traffic is about 250,000 orders per year.
Inpax is active in seven markets across the South, including Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina and Florida. With 75 employees and more than 335 owner-operators it delivers more than 400,000 orders per year. In addition to e-commerce pickup and delivery, it offers local and regional truck brokerage and tractor trailer freight.

5. Will Jackson Lumen Christi head coach Herb Brogan surpass John Herrington as the state's all-time winningest coach?
In his 47th season as head coach, Brogan enters with 432 career wins, which is 11 behind Herrington, the former Farmington Hills Harrison legendary head coach. Brogan surpassed former Birmingham Brother Rice head coach Al Fracassa for second on the all-time list last year. Last season, Lumen Christi went 11-3 in adding to its state record total of 15 state championships.
If Lumen Christi repeats that win total, Brogan will tie Herrington. There are games against bigger schools like Toledo Central Catholic, Toledo St. Francis De Sales, Detroit Country Day and Dearborn Divine Child, but if Lumen Christi can win at least two of those, avoid slip-ups in other games and go on another championship run, it's possible Brogan could celebrate breaking the record and a state championship at the same time in November at Ford Field.

Jordan Hall, a Princeton High School running back committed to the Miami University RedHawks, received an offer August 24 from the Cincinnati Bearcats, per Hall's Twitter/X account.
Hall tweeted that UC was his 11th offer. He's tweeted previously about offers from Wake Forest, UConn, Penn State, Florida Atlantic, Marshall, Austin Peay, Army, Miami, Bowling Green and Toledo, and visits to UC, Ohio and Pitt.
Hall, also a track star for the Vikings, committed via Twitter in June to the RedHawks.
Hall scored three touchdowns and rushed for more than 100 yards in Princeton's season-opening win against Moeller at Paycor Stadium.
The UC offer, according to Hall's Twitter account, is his fourth since the Vikings' win against the Crusaders.

Jordan Hall, a Princeton High School running back committed to the Miami University RedHawks, received an offer August 24 from the Cincinnati Bearcats, per Hall's Twitter/X account.
Hall tweeted that UC was his 11th offer. He's tweeted previously about offers from Wake Forest, UConn, Penn State, Florida Atlantic, Marshall, Austin Peay, Army, Miami, Bowling Green and Toledo, and visits to UC, Ohio and Pitt.
Hall, also a track star for the Vikings, committed via Twitter in June to the RedHawks.
Hall scored three touchdowns and rushed for more than 100 yards in Princeton's season-opening win against Moeller at Paycor Stadium.
The UC offer, according to Hall's Twitter account, is his fourth since the Vikings' win against the Crusaders.

DETROIT — Tigers All-Star outfielder Riley Greene is trending toward a return to the lineup, though manager AJ Hinch isn't ready to put an exact timetable on that. If all goes well, he could return this week during the home stand.
Greene was back in the Comerica Park clubhouse Monday afternoon, Aug. 24, ahead of the opener of a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Greene was doing some outfield drills before the game. He had been rehabbing in Lakeland, Florida.

Left-hander Andrew Sears is reportedly on his way to Detroit. The Tigers 11th ranked prospect on our preseason rankings, Sears has shown out in two Triple-A appearances since being promoted from Double-A Erie back on August 11. The X account Dr. Degenerate, apparently the burner account for someone with good sources, reported on Saturday that Sears is being promoted to Detroit. That account has nailed several recent promotions in the Tigers' system. The report has been circulated by both Emily Waldon as well as the MiLB Central official account on X, and Chris McCosky of the Detroit News confirmed that Sears is with the team in Kansas City and will be used as a bulk reliever in Sunday's bullpen game.
The 23-year-old Sears, he'll turn 24 on August 30, was the Tigers 10th round pick in the 2023 draft out of Connecticut. That makes him the first pitching prospect drafted by Scott Harris to reach Detroit, and another later round success story to go with Brett Callahan. Sears received a $167,500 bonus to sign, just barely over the base bonus of $150,000.
Sears made his full season pro debut in 2024 at the Low-A Lakeland level, where his strikeout rate was good and he was rarely hit hard, but had some control issues. Those were resolved by 2025, and the southpaw continued to rack up good strikeout numbers and prevent home runs while throwing a lot more strikes for High-A West Michigan. Left-handers often thrive in A-ball and then struggle as more advanced hitters get used to seeing more southpaws against them, but Sears didn't miss a beat moving into the upper levels. He closed out the season with a nice run over six starts at Double-A Erie. The hope this year was that Sears would refine his changeup and overall command a bit more, reach Triple-A and become available in the second half of this season to help the major league club.
Ultimately, this all came to pass, but it was a wild ride for Sears this year. He had a bone spur fracture in his throwing elbow to begin the season, and spent a few months recovering and rehabbing, returning to Erie in mid-June. He made nine starts for the SeaWolves, compiling a 2.57 ERA/3.44 FIP combination, with a 24.3 percent strikeout rate and a 7.6 percent walk rate. In two starts for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens, Sears has been a strikeout machine, punching out 41.2 percent of hitters he's faced. His walk rate has ticked up to 11.8 percent, but he also hasn't allowed a home run.
We've pegged Sears for two seasons now as the next lefty swingman for the Tigers. He can start, but he makes plenty of sense as a long reliever and spot starter who also works out of the bullpen. His deception, built on a bit of funky, crossfire delivery and a quick arm from a low slot, makes him tricky to deal with, and his stuff has routinely played up compared to the raw stuff metrics. The Detroit Tigers appeared to be getting close to adding Brant Hurter back to their bullpen.
Not anymore.
Detroit has pulled Hurter from his minor-league rehab ****** ignment with Triple-A Toledo, delaying the left-hander's return after a rough stretch of appearances. The good news is that Hurter has not suffered another injury, according to MLB's Jason Beck. The less encouraging part is that the Tigers don't believe he's ready to face Major League hitters yet.
Manager A.J. Hinch said Detroit wants Hurter out of games temporarily while he works on his mechanics.
"We have not shut him down completely," Hinch said, adding that the Tigers want to make sure Hurter is operating at full strength.
