Here are some statistical curiosities that may have caught your attention, or not, as we hit the home stretch:
Brice Turang batted .175 with a .266 on-base percentage and a .247 slugging mark in August 2026, with one home run and three stolen bases (but two caught stealing). It was the worst month of his past two seasons and second-worst monthly stat line in his career, except for a bleak July 2024, when he batted .169 with a .221 on-base mark and a .191 slugging percentage.
But Turang's streakiness has been pretty noticeable over the past two years. Last August, he was a monster, with a .343 average, .398 on-base mark, .594 slugging and 10 (!) home runs. In July, though, he batted .209, slugged .302 and had one homer.
Monthly splits are obviously crude measures, but it's kind of remarkable how Turang has more or less alternated good and bad months over the past two years. His slash marks since the start of 2025:

Everton have announced the transfer of fullback Nathan Patterson to Torino in Serie A. Though the the transfer fee was not disclosed, it is rumoured to be under £1 million with a hefty 30% sell-on fee attached as well.
The 24-year-old leaves Everton after four and a half seasons, having joined from Glasgow Rangers in January 2022 and ushered the club through a couple of relegation battles.
He only featured in 68 games in his time here, having failed to win David Moyes' trust to become the starter at a position of need for the Blues for close to a decade since the decline of former club captain Seamus Coleman.
Despite featuring in all three group games for Scotland at this summer's World Cup, on his way out of the club Patterson even had to endure the insult of Moyes forgetting his name, calling him 'Craig Patterson' at a recent press conference. He will leave the club on good terms with the fans though.

Clark Lea lost his first-ever game at Vanderbilt football to an FCS team, East Tennessee State, five years ago.
Lea hasn't forgotten that. A few players on the team were even still there for that 2021 game.
Since that day, the program has improved a lot. Lea has led the Commodores to two bowl games and has won his season opener in four straight seasons. That includes wins over Virginia Tech to kick off both the 2024 and 2025 season.
Vanderbilt's opening opponent this season, Austin Peay, is an FCS team. Like ETSU, though, the Governors are a well-regarded FCS team that is usually ranked in its division. That game will take place Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. CT at FirstBank Stadium and be televised on SEC Network+.

Tony Romo pleaded no contest Tuesday morning to his July arrest for driving while intoxicated in Wisconsin, then posted a 330-word statement explaining his dependence on alcohol and how he's getting help currently.
Romo, who played 13 seasons in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys, was arrested July 23 in Milwaukee County and charged with operating while intoxicated (OWI). Following the arrest, CBS Sports placed Romo on leave after he had served with Jim Nantz as part of the network's No. 1 NFL broadcast duo since 2017. Houston Texans legend J.J. Watt has moved into Romo's spot alongside Nantz.
There has been no further announcement from the network about Romo's future with the company, but he made it clear Tuesday that he intends to return.
"I am deeply grateful for the support of my family, my friends and the NFL community, including players, coaches and owners. Your encouragement has meant more to me than you know," Romo wrote on the post he made on Instagram. "As I turn my attention to my health, my family, and, in time, my return to CBS, I kindly ask for privacy during this period. God bless."

With active rosters expanding from 26 to 28 players in September, the Pirates have recalled left-hander Brandon Eisert from Triple-A Indianapolis and selected catcher Christian Bethancourt ahead of Tuesday night's game against the Giants.
Eisert, who was acquired from the White Sox on July 10, has made 32 appearances between Chicago and Pittsburgh this season and is 2-2 with a 6.29 ERA. He's struck out 40 batters and walked 12 in 34.1 innings.
The Pirates acquired Bethancourt from the Yankees on Aug. 19 and had been on the taxi squad since the trade. In 67 games at Triple-A between the Yankees and Cubs organizations this season, the 34-year-old hit .270/.320/.491 with 14 homers and 45 RBI in 59 games.
Bethancourt last appeared in the big leagues in 2024. In parts of eight big-league seasons he owns a .229/.259/.362 batting line with 60 doubles, 35 home runs and 135 RBI in 427 games between six teams.
To clear a spot for Bethancourt on the 40-man roster, the Pirates transferred catcher/first baseman Endy Rodríguez to the 60-day injured list. Rodríguez underwent left hip labrum surgery on Aug. 26.

With MLB active rosters expanding from 26 to 28 players on Tuesday, the Twins have made utility man Ben Ross and right-handed reliever Garrett Acton their two September call-ups. Injured Triple-A outfielder Kyler Fedko was designated for **** ignment to make room for Ross on the 40-man roster.
Ross reaching the major leagues for the first time is a cool story and a well-deserved reward for a remarkable season in the minors. Coming into 2026, he was 24 years old and a complete non-prospect after back-to-back poor seasons for Double-A Wichita (.626 OPS in 2024, .671 in '25). This year, everything changed for the former fifth-round pick.
Ross began this season on an incredible tear with Wichita, hitting .424 with a 1.324 OPS in 16 games. That earned him a promotion to Triple-A St. Paul, where he's continued to produce. In 102 games with the Saints, the righty-hitting Ross has a .249 average with 15 home runs, 12 stolen bases, and an .810 OPS.
An Ohio native, Ross played at Division II Notre Dame College (not the university), a school near Cleveland that no longer exists. He was a fifth-round pick in the 2022 draft.
What Ross brings to the Twins is defensive versatility with some pop and speed on offense, which could be useful off the bench and against left-handed pitching. He's played a lot of shortstop and third base in the minors, but he also can and has played on the right side of the infield and at all three outfield spots. Offensively, he has 67 career homers and 73 steals in 499 MiLB games. Ross strikes out a fair amount but also draws walks.

The Bulldogs opened the 2026 season Thursday night by doing something that would have been difficult to imagine two years ago: they walked into Pittsburg State, the site of their most recent loss, and dismantled the No. 4 Gorillas, 42-14. The victory extended Ferris State's winning streak to 31 games and immediately reminded the rest of the country why the Bulldogs entered the season ranked No. 1 in Division II.
The significance goes beyond the score.
Pittsburg State handed Ferris its last loss, a 19-3 defeat on Aug. 31, 2024. Since then, Ferris has not simply won; it has crushed opponents on its way to consecutive national championships. Thursday's victory was particularly emphatic, as the Bulldogs ran for 385 yards while holding Pittsburg State to just 44 rushing yards.
The Bulldogs finished 16-0 in 2025, defeating Harding 42-21 for their fourth national championship in five seasons. That made Ferris the first team in the modern era of Division I or Division II football to finish a season 16-0. The Bulldogs also scored 844 points, setting an NCAA Division I and II modern-era scoring record.

The Cleveland Cavaliers didn't blow up anything after getting swept by the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals, and I think that was the right call, because this team was already pretty close. Cleveland finished 52-30, ranked sixth in offensive rating at 119.2, and reached its first Conference Finals since 2018, so the answer wasn't starting over, it was finding better pieces around a core that still has the talent to win the East.
The front office basically doubled down on that idea during the summer. Donovan Mitchell signed a four-year, $273.0 million extension, James Harden came back on a three-year, $97.0 million deal after arriving for Darius Garland at the deadline, and the Cavaliers made their biggest outside move by landing Peyton Watson in a five-team sign-and-trade. Max Strus, Dennis Schroder, Dean Wade, and Keon Ellis are among the players gone, while Mario Hezonja also returned to the NBA after several seasons in Europe.
That leaves Cleveland with a very clear bet for 2026-27: The Big Four have to be good enough to carry most of this. There isn't another superstar coming, and they have the pieces to win, because Mitchell averaged almost 28 points last season, Harden can still run an elite offense, Mobley is entering his prime, and Allen remains one of the better centers in the East.
The problem is that we already saw this group hit a wall in the playoffs. Cleveland scored only 107.9 points per game during the postseason, Harden dropped to 19.2 points and 5.5 **** ists while shooting 29.9% from three, and the Knicks beat them by 37 points in Game 4 to finish the sweep.
This season isn't really about proving the Cavaliers are good. We already know about their talent, now they have to prove this Big Four can actually finish the job in a stacked Eastern Conference.

The notion college sports are for college students who will move on when they complete their degree or turn pro enjoys near-universal support. But right now, that fundamental boundary is being dismantled amid a relentless wave of litigation.

Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney has named Christopher Vizzina his starting quarterback for the Tigers' opener at LSU.
"He's earned that," Swinney said during a press conference on Sept. 1.
"It's been a lot of fun," Swinney said of the quarterback battle. "They've had a very detailed process on how they've gone through it. Every practice, every rep, every throw, everything has been graded to the ninth degree, and (Vizzina) is just a little ahead. He's not a mile ahead, but he's ahead, and practice matters."
Vizzina was the top backup for Cade Klubnik the last two seasons, but with Klubnik now in the NFL, the door opened for the senior to win the job.
While Vizzina was the likely starter heading into the summer, he was competing against freshman Tait Reynolds. Swinney said "there was a time" when he thought Reynolds would win the job, but that Vizzina separated himself during fall camp.

Tennessee football legend Peyton Manning awarded four UT freshmen with the latest installment of his namesake scholarship and he was on campus to honor the recipients on Aug. 31.
Hector Centeno-Lopez, Breanna Gonzalez, Olamide Olakunle and Mikayla Schumpert, the 2026 Peyton Manning Scholars, earned their four-year award and a spot in the selective Haslam Leadership Scholarship program through a rigorous selection process that sought "academically successful incoming Vols who exemplify service, leadership and integrity," UT said in a school release.
"The growth of this program remains a point of pride for me," Manning said. "This is just the beginning of the positive mark these students will leave on their community and this university. I hope they will leave UT with the same passion for this special place that I have."
Manning is still the most prolific passer in UT football history, having thrown for 11,201 yards over four seasons from 1994-97. The first overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft, Manning won a Super Bowl with both the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021.
He endowed the scholarship when he graduated from UT in 1998 and it has been awarded to 69 students in the 29 years since. This year's four Manning Scholars all have diverse academic and career interests but are bonded by a "desire to lead and leave UT better than they found it," according to UT.

Josiah Trotter finished the preseason with an 80.5 defensive grade, the fourth highest among rookie linebackers who played at least 20 snaps. Only Ohio State's Arvell Reese, LSU's Harold Perkins Jr. and Texas Tech's Jack Kelly finished ahead of him.
Against the Jets, Trotter played just 15 defensive snaps but earned an 82.4 PFF grade. He finished with three total tackles without being charged with a missed tackle and earned a 78.1 run defense grade. Trotter attacked downhill, forced runners to change direction, and held up when asked to cover tight ends and running backs. There wasn't much concern about Trotter's ability against the run coming out of Missouri, as he earned an 89.3 run defense grade during his final college season and built his reputation around his instincts and willingness to attack gaps. Coverage was the bigger question after he posted grades below 50 in that area during each of his final two college seasons, but those concerns haven't prevented the Bucs from giving him opportunities.
Trotter started alongside Alex Anzalone when Tampa Bay played its first team defense against Kansas City, another indication that the competition with SirVocea Dennis for a starting role has been legitimate. The rookie has also talked about how quickly the game has started to slow down for him as he's gotten more comfortable in Todd Bowles' defense. Trotter has looked capable of handling more than just early down run defense, which could make it easier for Bowles to declare him a starter come regular season.

A Georgia Bulldogs long snapper survived the grind of final cuts and has made an NFL roster. Former Georgia long snapper Beau Gardner has made the Chicago Bears' active roster, according to a team announcement. He won the competition against Luke Elkin.
Gardner will be an integral part of the special teams unit alongside kicker Cairo Santos and punter Tory Taylor. Santos has been the Bears kicker since 2020, while Taylor has been one of the best punters in the league.
Gardner was also a part of a great special teams unit in Georgia, where he transferred in 2024 after three seasons with the UCLA Bruins. Kicker Peyton Woodring, still on the team, made the All-SEC second team in 2024 and 2025, while Brett Thorson, the punter for the Minnesota Vikings, was a first-team All-American and winner of the Ray Guy Award in 2025, along with being All-ACC second team in 2024 and 2025.
Gardner himself was a great special teamer in Georgia. He was first-team All-SEC in 2024 and 2025, first-team All-American in 2025, and even won the Patrick Mannelly Award in 2025 for being the best long snapper in the nation. He consistently delivered great snaps. The Bears signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2026 as a reward, and he has made the team.
The Bears have very little former Georgia Bulldogs on their team, with just running back D'Andre Swift joining Gardner. They used to have linebacker Roquan Smith on their team before he was traded to the Baltimore Ravens in 2022. Gardner is not the only undrafted Georgia specialist to make an NFL team. Brett Thorson made the Vikings as well.

ATLANTA (AP) — Scottie Scheffler's final act of the season was to sign his winning scorecard. After a few minutes to exhale, his wife and two sons having come into the room, he placed his cap over the fixed camera the PGA Tour now installs in previously private scoring areas. Content is king.
It wasn't quite the level of Brian Harman smirking and shooting the bird at the camera last month in Minnesota, which made Scheffler chuckle and pump his fist. Both were playful moments, and yet Sunday at East Lake shed a little light on Scheffler's incredible staying power.
Scheffler loves what it takes to be the best player in golf, even the tedious work. He just doesn't care for all the noise and notoriety that accompany greatness.
"I have a tendency to keep my head down and kind of stay in my own lane when I'm out there playing," he said during the trophy presentation at the Tour Championship. "It's really fun when you're able to win and celebrate with the fans in moments like these, and have my family here."
Still, his priority is to crush more than to engage. So he added somewhat apologetically, "I feel bad sometimes. I really do keep my head down and try to focus as much as I can. But I really do hear all the cheers, and I'm very thankful for all of them."

On August 25, SelectQuote (NASDAQ:SLQT) told investors that cash generation, not growth, is now the entire point of owning the stock. Fiscal 2026 revenue reached $1.62 billion, up 6% year over year, and operating cash flow climbed $44 million from the prior year. But the same release showed a fourth-quarter net loss of $16.8 million, a reversal from $12.9 million in net income a year earlier, and a fiscal 2027 guide that points meaningfully lower on the top line. That gap between the narrative and the numbers underneath it is worth sitting with.
Healthcare Services, built around the company's SelectRx pharmacy, generated $845 million in revenue for fiscal 2026, up 14% even as Inflation Reduction Act drug pricing changes cut into the segment starting in the back half of the year. That business exited the fourth quarter at an annualized adjusted EBITDA run rate of nearly $50 million, roughly double the $25 million it produced across the full year, and management expects those margins to keep expanding as more prescriptions route through the company's Olathe, Kansas facility, which is already shipping about 30% more efficiently than its older sites.
Layered on top, SelectQuote identified more than $30 million in annualized run rate savings from AI-enabled enrollment tools and workflow automation. The Senior segment, meanwhile, held a 26% adjusted EBITDA margin for a fourth straight year in the mid-20% range, evidence that the agent-led distribution model keeps producing steady profit even when Medicare Advantage carriers shift benefits underneath it. Add in a commissions receivable balance north of $1 billion, and the company argues its underlying earnings power is bigger than its stock price reflects.
The guidance tells a different story. SelectQuote expects fiscal 2027 revenue of $1.35 billion to $1.45 billion, roughly 14% below fiscal 2026 at the midpoint, with Medicare Advantage approved policies projected to fall another 10% to 15% after already declining 4% this past year. Senior segment revenue already dropped 4% in fiscal 2026 to $576 million, partly because a major carrier partner pulled back its own marketing spending, a reminder of how much SelectQuote's results depend on decisions made by insurers it does not control.
The Inflation Reduction Act will keep pressuring Healthcare Services revenue through fiscal 2027, with especially messy comparisons in the first half. SelectRx membership already moderated to 109,039 members and is expected to dip further before recovering. Underneath all of it sits $800 million in debt and preferred equity carrying a roughly 12% funding cost, translating into $45 million of annual cash interest that has to be paid regardless of how enrollment season goes. Management itself called the term life insurance market competitive on customer acquisition costs, a small but telling admission that not every corner of the business is running cleanly.

Liberty Capital Corporation (NASDAQ:GLIBK): "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!": In our Q4 2024 letter, we described our unfavorable investment history with Liberty Latin America (LILAK) and explained our reasons for substantially exiting the position and reinvesting the proceeds in TIGO. In the letter, we blamed ourselves for giving LILAK's management team too much slack even though operating performance continued to contradict their rosy projections. Selling shares in a longer-term holding that has not worked is no fun, but it is part of the investment process.
In our Q3 2025 letter, we detailed our investment in GCI Liberty (later renamed Liberty Capital) and described how we felt that the company traded substantially below the value of the Alaska Cable business, which implied that investors were seemingly ascribing negative value to the prospects of deals from John Malone and company. We noted how investors would have flocked to this type of investment 10 years ago, but the underperformance of US cable and several other Liberty names had caused a severe inversion to anything cable related..." BLOOMINGTON — Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti and his staff have the tough task this week of trying to game plan for a North Texas team that welcomed more than 50 transfers and 75 new faces.
One area where IU has a leg up on their homework is at quarterback.
Last week, North Texas announced a familiar face as starter when it named Tayven Jackson to oppose IU. The Center Grove alum from outside Indianapolis made six starts over two seasons in Bloomington and won a game over Washington in 2024 while Kurtis Rourke was sidelined with a thumb injury.
"Tayven played really good football for us in '24, came in at halftime in the Nebraska game, and played a great second half, and started next week against Washington, a game that we won," Cignetti said.

The Dallas Cowboys have added another piece to their running back room, claiming Emari Demercado off waivers after the Kansas City Chiefs released him as part of their final roster cuts.
Demercado, 27, enters Dallas with three seasons of NFL experience after latching on with the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent back in 2023. The offensive line coach during his first two seasons in the desert was Klayton Adams — Dallas' current offensive coordinator.
The California native is also familiar with the area as he played his college ball at TCU after beginning his career at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.
Arizona chose not to tender him this past offseason which allowed him to sign a one-year deal with the Chiefs.
For his career, Demercado has rushed 126 times for 819 yards averaging an impressive 6.5 yards per carry. He also contributed 50 receptions for 324 yards, showing that he can be used as a receiving option when needed.

Ja'Quan McMillian is getting the respect he deserves. It's just hard to do so at times when the player on the other side of you happens to be Patrick Surtain II. But that's why CBS Sports.com writer Zachary Pereles placed McMillian fourth on his list of 50 NFL players who are flying under the radar.
McMillian finished his 2025 NFL season with 56 tackles and two interceptions. While Surtain gets most of the credit, Pereles makes sure to highlight that McMillian's all-around play makes him a key ****** et to the Denver Broncos' defense.
"McMillian's 2025 season included becoming the first player to sack Patrick Mahomes twice and intercept him once in the same game, as well as the crucial, controversial overtime interception against the Bills in the playoffs," Pereles wrote for CBS Sports. "He also had four sacks, more than he recorded in his first three seasons combined. His all-around skill set is a big part of Denver's defense."
Hopefully, 2026 is a big enough year that McMillian can grab a Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection.
