World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has announced he is pulling out of the upcoming U.S. Open due to a knee injury.
Sinner, last year's U.S. Open runner-up and 2024 champion, said in a social media post that over the past few days he's been doing on-court work, but that he needs more recovery time.
"Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year. We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realized that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue.
"I'm obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there."
The 25-year-old Sinner has been out of action since winning Wimbledon last month.

The US Open will have at least one of the two ****** ans in men's tennis.
Carlos Alcaraz, currently ranked No. 2 in the world, said in a social media post Thursday that he will make his return to tennis at the 2026 US Open after a four-month absence.
The seven-time Grand Slam champion—and the defending US Open champion—has not played since the Barcelona Open in April, and missed the last two Grand Slams (Roland-Garros and Wimbledon) with a wrist injury.
All eyes now turn to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, whose status for the final Grand Slam on the calendar is still unclear. The five-time Grand Slam winner withdrew from the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open—two Masters 1000 tournaments—in recent weeks, and has not played since winning Wimbledon in July due to a knee injury.
Alcaraz and Sinner are widely viewed as the favorites in every tournament they compete in, and have split 10 of the last 11 Grand Slams. World No. 3 Alexander Zverev was able to break through and win his first Grand Slam at the French Open in June with Alcaraz missing and Sinner falling in the early rounds.

Novak Djokovic revealed he has been dealing with an ongoing health condition after his surprise second-round defeat at the Cincinnati Open.
The 39-year-old said the condition was exacerbated by the heat and humidity in Ohio as he visibly struggled in a 6-2, 4-6, 4-6 loss to Argentina's world number 50 Thiago Agustin Tirante on Saturday.
World number five Djokovic, playing his first match since losing to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon semi-finals in July, slumped to his hands and knees before taking a medical timeout midway through the second set.
He told reporters: "Congrats to my opponent. It was not an enjoyable match for me, for sure. The way I felt ... Not the first and I guess not the last time, but it is what it is."
The 24-time grand slam champion added: "It's just a condition that I have, health-wise, that has been bothering me for the past couple of years.

Ben Shelton successfully defended his ***** le at the Canadian Open on Thursday, defeating fellow American Brandon Nakashima, 6-3, 7-6(4), in Montreal. It's Shelton's second ATP 1000 tournament win.
He became the seventh man in the Open era to go back-to-back in the event. Rafael Nadal was the last to win in both Toronto and Montreal — the men's and women's tournaments alternate sites each year — in 2018-19.
Shelton didn't drop a set in six matches against top-75 opponents. After a bye in the first round, he defeated No. 74 Jenson Brooksby, 6-3, 7-5, in the round of 64 and No. 34 Zizou Bergs, 6-3, 6-2, in the round of 32. No. 27 Joao Fonesca fell, 6-3, 7-6(3), sending Shelton to the quarterfinals, where he beat No. 17 Jakub Mensik, 6-3, 6-1.
The semifinal between Shelton and Learner Tien, served as a revenge match of sorts. The last time the two faced off was at Indian Wells, a Masters 1000 tournament, and Tien upset Shelton. This time, the former Gator emerged victorious in dominant fashion, 6-2, 6-3.
Shelton had struggled in Masters 1000s all year, coming into the Canadian Open with a 1-4 record, including four straight losses. Despite winning an ATP 500 tournament (Dallas) and an ATP 250 tournament (Munich), Shelton had seen several early exits since falling to Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open — in January. Most notably, he was knocked out in the round of 64 at Roland Garros and suffered a first-round loss at Wimbledon.

The star power at the Cincinnati Open—and potentially the US Open—has taken another hit.
On Sunday, Jannik Sinner withdrew from the Ohio-based tournament, citing issues with his right knee. In a statement released by the tournament, the ATP's No. 1–ranked men's player expressed hope that he'll be able to play in the US Open, which is set to begin its main draw on Aug. 30.
"After consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to announce that I need to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati," Sinner's statement reads. "My right knee has been bothering me and even though we have been working hard with my medical team, I have to accept that I'm not ready to compete yet.
"I'm very disappointed not to be able to play in Cincinnati and wish [tournament director] Bob [Moran] and his whole team a great and successful event. I can't wait to be back next year and I'm now focusing on getting ready for the US Open."
Sinner's announcement comes five days after the ATP's No. 2 men's player, Carlos Alcaraz, also withdrew from the Cincinnati Open. Alcaraz has been sidelined with a wrist injury since April, with the 23-year-old having missed the French Open and Wimbledon this year.

Jannik Sinner has pulled out of next week's Cincinnati Open due to a right knee injury, casting doubt onto his involvement at the US Open.
The World No 1 missed the Canadian Open in Montreal – ending his hopes of becoming the first player to win all nine Masters 1000 events in the same year – and has not competed since winning his fifth Grand Slam win at Wimbledon earlier this summer.
He joins rival Carlos Alcaraz on the shelf, who himself has been out since before the French Open with a wrist injury sustained in Barcelona.
Alcaraz also pulled out of the Cincinnati Open as a precaution but Sinner seemed confident that the issue would not hinder his participation in New York.

Cameron Norrie extended the upset chaos at the ATP Montreal Masters on Thursday, saving a match point in defeating Alex de Minaur 5-7, 7-6 (7/5), 6-1.
The battling British winner trailed a set and a double break against the Australian third seed, who folded in the final set of an epic lasting for almost three hours.
De Minaur, who had been the highest remaining seed in a depleted draw, could have closed it out in straight sets with a match point chance in the eighth game of the second set.
The tournament had already seen an early exit from top seed Alexander Zverev, an injury pullout from Canadian second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime and a loss by fourth seed Daniil Medvedev.
The US Open tuneup hardcourt event had already been hit by the absences of world number one Jannik Sinner and 24-time Grand Slam singles champion Novak Djokovic.

After returning to training, he has now withdrawn from the upcoming Cincinnati Open, and with the US Open less than a month away, Alcaraz's ability to defend his ******* le is in serious doubt.

The No. 2 ranked men's tennis star will not be participating in the Cincinnati Open due to a wrist injury that is set to keep him out.
Carlos Alcaraz is arguably the biggest star in tennis at the moment. The Spaniard is ranked No. 2 in the ATP rankings, behind reigning Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner.
Alcaraz and Sinner have quickly established themselves as the main men in the current scene. However, they haven't clashed at the highest level in a while, with Carlos missing both the French Open and Wimbledon.
The 23-year-old has spent most of 2026 recovering from a wrist injury. And just as he was set to make his return to ramp up ahead of the US Open, Alcaraz has suffered another setback.

Carlos Alcaraz still isn't ready to return from his lingering wrist injury.
Alcaraz withdrew from the Cincinnati Open on Tuesday, ending hopes that he'd be ready to make his return to the sport after missing both the French Open and Wimbledon already this season. His status for the US Open later this month is still very much up in the air.
"We know Carlos is doing everything he can to get back to playing tournaments as soon as possible," Cincinnati Open tournament director Bob Moran said in a statement. "We wish him the best with his recovery and look forward to welcoming him back to Cincinnati in teh future."
Alcaraz has been dealing with tenosynovitis in his wrist, which is the inflammation of the connective tissue that protects tendons, per the Cleveland Clinic. That can make it painful and difficult to move joints.
As a result, Alcaraz has missed both Wimbledon and the French Open this season. Top-ranked Jannik Sinner won Wimbledon last month with Alcaraz sidelined. He hasn't played since initially suffering the injury back at the Barcelona Open in April.

Alexander Zverev has arrived at the 2026 Canadian Open as the top seed, headlining a depleted field with Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and Carlos Alcaraz missing from the draw. Amid the discourse stirred by Djokovic and Sinner's decisions to withdraw, Zverev pinpointed why neither financial incentives nor ranking penalties would have influenced the 24-time Grand Slam champion's move.
After Sinner and Djokovic announced their decision to withdraw from the ATP Masters event in Montréal, tournament director Valérie Tétreault and Tennis Canada CEO Gavin Ziv suggested that "adjustments are needed" and revealed they are in discussions with the ATP to help ensure top players participate in important events.
During his pre-tournament press conference at the Canadian Open, Zverev was asked whether handing out bonuses to participants while imposing penalties on absentees could help address the issue.
However, the German pointed out that such a system already exists, as players who compete in eight of the nine Masters 1000 events receive a share of the ATP's multimillion-dollar bonus pool.
"That's the way it is right now. I mean, it's not rocket science. We get bonuses at the end of the year if we play all nine Masters," he said.

The tournament director of the Canadian Open says changes need to be made to the "demanding schedule" of players after Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic pulled out of the Masters 1000 event.
Sinner, who beat Alexander Zverev to win the Wimbledon ******* le this month, said he had withdrawn from the ATP tournament, which takes place from 2-13 August in Montreal, to prioritise his health.
Carlos Alcaraz will also be absent from the Canadian Open as he continues his recovery from a wrist injury that has kept him out since April.

"We respect their decisions and understand that, with such a demanding schedule, players' health must remain the priority.

At this moment in tennis, the three biggest names on the men's side are Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. None of them will be in attendance for this year's National Bank Open in Montreal, which is in theory a mandatory tournament.
Tennis Canada confirmed Friday that Sinner and Djokovic have withdrawn from the tournament, roughly one week before its start date on Aug. 1. Alcaraz was already known to be out with the wrist injury that has sidelined him since clay season.
It is the second straight year Sinner and Djokovic have skipped the tournament.
Sinner has played only one tournament (his successful Wimbledon ******* le defense) since his cramp-induced crashout at Roland-Garros in May. He didn't cite a specific injury or health reason for the withdrawal:
"After carefully considering all the factors together with my team, we have made the difficult decision to withdraw from Montreal," Sinner explained in a statement. "It is never easy to miss such an important event, but we believe this is the right decision to prioritise my health. I'm disappointed not to be there, but I look forward to returning to Montreal in the future."

Grand Slam tennis is in the middle of a storm regarding the prize money it pays its players.
Players are looking for increased prize money across the board and, crucially, a different mechanism through which Wimbledon, the French Open, US Open and Australian Open distribute it.
In 2026, a number of high-profile players have threatened to boycott slams if their demands are not met.
Recently-crowned Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner and fellow world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka are among those who have mooted collective action in order to resolve the dispute.
The mixed doubles events at the US Open beginning in August is a potential target for a boycott; that would represent the most significant move in the saga yet, given the commercial importance of that event for the United States Tennis **** ociation.
