The payment giant is grabbing attention with a strong run, but its real value for your portfolio lies in how little it moves on most days.
Visa (V) stock has been a bright spot in a gloomy market, climbing 6.6% over the past five trading days even as the S&P 500 slid 1.2%. This coincided with a period of strong results, with the company recently reporting that quarterly payments volume crossed $4 trillion for the first time.
When a stock stands out like this, the instinct is simple: pile into what's working. It feels like a safe harbor, a sign of undeniable strength in a market that feels weak.
But the question that truly shapes your long-term wealth isn't whether Visa will win next week. It's about what owning it does to your portfolio's risk today. How much of its performance is its own unique story, and how much is just the same market you already own in an index fund?

If you're like me, you grew up dreaming that one day you'd be a writer. I consider myself immensely lucky that I get to do this job which often does not feel like a job at all. Still, there are challenges: as with so many creative feels, wages are low, opportunities can be slim, and the politics of who knows who and how to get ahead are everywhere. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, writers make an average of about $70K a year; and writers often work additional jobs to make ends meet. None of this is helped along by our growing literacy crisis, nor the ever increasing presence of AI. In an article for Fast Company on the adverse impact of AI on young writers, Jennifer Ward writes, "They're simultaneously struggling to figure out if they need to use AI to keep up in today's competitive industry—or eschew it altogether in order to maintain trust."
So I often find myself turning to successful writers who are candid about what it really takes to not only make a career out of writing, but to make a living. Sometimes those writers just happen to be bestselling novelists like Gillian McAllister.
McAllister, who is based in the UK is the author of of Reese's Book Club Pick Wrong Place Wrong Time, Read With Jenna pick, Caller Unknown, Famous Last Words, Just Another Missing Person, Everything but the Truth, The Choice, The Good Sister, The Evidence Against You, How to Disappear, and the Richard & Judy Book Club pick That Night. She's also the creator and co-host of the podcast Honest Authors where she and Holly Seddon pull the curtain back on being a working writer. On Instagram, Gillian talks openly about everything from the day to day of writing while parenting, to the lessons she learned pivoting from a career as a lawyer to working as a writer full time. To celebrate the release of That Night in paperback this month, I caught up with Gillian to talk about what it really takes to become a writer, bringing nuance and heart to her books, and chronic illness shapes her work.
Caroline Reilly: I understand that before your career as a writer, you were a lawyer. What were some of the earliest thoughts or ideas you had about pivoting to writing?
Gillian McAllister: If you had asked me at any stage of my life–and I had told the truth–I would have said I wanted to be a writer. But I didn't know how to do it: I had zero connections, zero money, and rent to pay, so I became a lawyer, which I practiced and enjoyed for a long time. Though fiction was always in the background: I had a blog which was essentially writing practice for me, and three or for half-started manuscripts on a very old MacBook with a worn-out E key.

Retirees should spend their traditional IRA first, since heirs forced to empty inherited accounts within 10 years often pay 32% tax versus a retiree's 12%.
Early retirees have nearly a decade before RMDs begin at 73, a prime window to draw down traditional IRA funds at lower tax rates.
Roth IRAs carry no lifetime RMDs and pass to heirs tax-free, making every dollar of compounded growth free of federal income tax upon inheritance.

Retirees often carry both a traditional IRA and a Roth IRA into their sixties, and the order in which they draw down those accounts shapes both their tax bill and what their children eventually receive. Published tax rules and inherited-account guidance point to a sequence many families reverse: spend the traditional IRA first and leave the Roth IRA alone.

Taylor Swift isn't just a trendsetter when she works a red carpet. You'll find that her off-duty outfits are their own kind of event, watched and decoded by Swifties and fashion experts alike. They also correspond with the visual backdrop of her eras, whether it's the '50s sweetheart, '80s synth-pop, or anything in between, all highlighting where she's creatively at in that moment. Vintage decades, in particular, are a well the Grammy winner keeps drawing from, and one such off-the-clock look from June 15, 2026 is worth revisiting precisely for its retro polish, as well as how neatly it worked with its chosen surroundings.
In fact, if we were to rank the best outfits Taylor Swift has worn in every era of her career, this visit to Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village, where she was spotted wearing a sun-warmed ensemble pulled straight from the '70s, would definitely land somewhere near the top. It was all about earth tones and nostalgic shapes. The pop star donned a knit polo from Guest in Residence, the cashmere label her model pal Gigi Hadid launched in 2022. It was paired with pale jeans that sat high on the waist — in typical Swift fashion.
Aeon/Getty
On her feet, the "Shake It Off" hitmaker wore Gucci Horsebit platforms, while a classic Chloé bag rounded out the dreamy, caramel-coded color palette. Even her jewelry paid tribute to history; the opals she wore on her wrist and finger came from a pricey jewelry suite that once belonged to Elizabeth Taylor. Look at it as a whole and the picture reads like a perfect album cover from the mid-'70s. But this is Swift we're talking about, and with the singer, there's always a deeper layer — this time, it was the venue.

Diamondbacks right-hander Corbin Burnes threw strikes, got a couple of outs and then threw a little more in the bullpen. It was, he said, a good first step. He hopes that after one more, he might be ready to make his long-awaited return.
Burnes pitched on Tuesday, Aug. 25, in a so-called "bridge camp" game at Sloan Park in Mesa, recording two outs and allowing a single against a lineup of Chicago Cubs minor leaguers.
Pitching in the same game was Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen, who gave up one run in three innings.
Burnes' fastball was mostly in the low-90s, topping at 93 mph.
"It was good," Burnes said. "Came out and threw strikes. Did what I needed to do. The misses we had were right around the zone. That was kind of my whole goal coming back was to make sure we're filling up the strike zone and being around it. Give ourselves a chance to get outs. From the look of it, shapes, everything was pretty good there."

Gemini is a crypto exchange that built its reputation on the idea of keeping your crypto safe and staying on the right side of regulators. Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, the twins behind it, launched the exchange in 2014 and still run it out of New York under strict state banking rules.
That focus shapes the whole product. You can buy, sell, and hold crypto in all 50 states through a simple screen built for beginners or through ActiveTrader, a full platform with live charts and an order book. The exchange offers bank-grade oversight and insurance on your cash and a portion of your crypto.
However, the coverage and features you get carry a cost. Basic trades run pricier here than on some of its major rivals, and the coin list it offers runs short.
So, who is Gemini actually right for? Here is what we found when we dug into the fees, the features, and the fine print.

Tupac "2Pac" Shakur's sister, Sekyiwa, says their family has "low expectations" that someone will be brought to justice for her brother's murder.
Sekyiwa was interviewed on Law & Crime Network amid the murder trial of Duane "Keffe D" Davis for his alleged involvement in 2Pac's death.
Sekyiwa, 50, revealed that her family's history in the U.S. shapes their feelings about the investigation.
"Unfortunately, our family, because of our history in America, we have no expectations, or low expectations, of the criminal system when it comes to hunting down someone for my brother's murder," she said around the five-minute mark in the video below. "Just black boys, young black boys, and their lives, their deaths are routinely swept under the rug."

USC has Notre Dame and UCLA as main rivals, but ESPN had a different idea. When creating a list of arch-enemies for various power conference teams in college football, ESPN came up with an answer which is not a school, but an organization: the NCAA. A lot of Trojan fans would nod in agreement.
Paolo Uggetti wrote that "The Trojans count both UCLA and Notre Dame among their most bitter rivals, yet there is no more fraught relationship than the one they have had with the NCAA. Sixteen years later, the sting surrounding the way the NCAA punished Reggie Bush and USC following an investigation into Bush receiving what it deemed improper gifts is a lingering part of the identity of Trojans fans and, to an extent, the program as a whole. As the sport has become as professionalized as it ever has been, the way Bush's missteps and the heavy punishment USC received (bowl ban and vacating wins, including a national ******* le) look in comparison has only served to reinforce USC fans' belief that their team was unfairly punished."
Uggetti's point rings true. The violations USC was punished for look like nickel-and-dime matters of very little weight and consequence all these years later. That point aside, enforcement of violations was hardly consistent across all schools. Penn State, for instance, committed wrongdoings which far exceeded USC's in severity (the Jerry Sandusky scandal) but was not punished more severely. That's just one of several examples one could come up with.

A TikTok influencer named Christy Wong responded to the internet's outrage about her dating preferences in her video **** led "Is it okay to have Racial Preferences in Dating?" Wong claimed people are missing the point of attraction and criticizing what they can't control.
First, Wong set the context and described people's reaction to her earlier statement about her dating preferences.
"People get very upset when hearing that other people have dating preferences," Wong said. "So I said that my preferences are white Americans, Chinese, and Koreans, and a lot of people are very upset with that. So let's talk about it, because I personally don't think it's worthwhile criticizing other people's dating preferences."
Then, she addressed the argument that people's preferences may be affected by the media and historical background.
"I said that my preferences come primarily from familiarity. But a lot of people say that our preferences can also be largely shaped by media and history, and it can reflect, internalize racism. And I don't disagree with that. There's no denying that that is definitely true. The media shapes what we find attractive. It shapes what I find attractive. It shapes yours. I don't think anybody is above it," she said.

In the AI infrastructure boom, Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) sells the brains of the AI factory while Micron (NASDAQ: MU) supplies the memory that keeps those brains fed with data, and that difference shapes which stock will benefit more from the current phase of this historic spending wave. In my view, Nvidia is the clearer winner because a greater fraction of every dollar of hyperscaler capex is spent on its accelerators than goes toward memory chips of the type that Micron manufactures. Micron still looks like a powerful second-derivative play, since AI servers can't be built without the high-bandwidth memory it supplies.
The money flow this year is wildly high. The hyperscalers themselves say they plan to spend hundreds of billions of dollars in 2026 alone to expand AI data centers, GPU clusters, networking, and power infrastructure, a sharp jump from already elevated 2025 levels. One estimate puts combined capex for Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta Platforms at around $700 billion, with roughly two-thirds of that directed toward AI infrastructure rather than traditional cloud. Within that budget, the largest line item is the AI server stack itself, where accelerated servers built around high-end GPUs drive most of the component revenue growth. And of course, the hyperscalers are not the only tech players building data centers now.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Nvidia sits directly in the center of this buying spree. Its data center business now revolves around entire racks of AI computing power, not just single chips. Systems like the GB200 Grace Blackwell Superchip and GB200 NVL72 tie together dozens of CPUs and GPUs into logical accelerators that can train and serve trillion-parameter models more efficiently than the prior-generation Hopper platforms. Hyperscalers are lining up to deploy these systems in their AI clouds, with massive companies committing to offer GB200 NVL72 instances to customers who want to run large language models at scale. All this sounds dense, but the basic point is that Nvidia products are in steady demand.
Nvidia's roadmap also continues to push the limits of performance and memory. Architectures like Blackwell and its new Vera Rubin processors combine vast computing throughput with enormous pools of high bandwidth memory (HBM), turning racks into "AI factories." That keeps Nvidia at the absolute center of procurement decisions when cloud providers are calculating how many clusters they will need to handle their training and inferencing workloads in 2026 and beyond.

Red Sox Get Encouraging Roman Anthony Injury Update Amid Playoff Push originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Boston's young outfielder has taken another important step toward returning to game action. The Boston Red Sox have continued to surge without Roman Anthony, but one of their most talented young players appears to be moving closer to rejoining the lineup.
Anthony has progressed to hitting against a high-velocity Trajekt pitching machine as he works his way back from a wrist injury, according to MassLive's Chris Cotillo. Red Sox manager Chad Tracy said the 22-year-old is "getting closer" to beginning a minor league rehab ******* ignment.
That is an encouraging development for a Boston club attempting to secure a postseason spot during the final stretch of the regular season. Anthony previously advanced to facing overhand pitching in the batting cage. Hitting against the Trajekt machine represents another notable test because it can replicate high-end velocity and different pitch shapes in a controlled environment.
The next major step will be sending Anthony on a rehab ******* ignment, where the Red Sox can evaluate his timing and how the wrist responds to consecutive games.

The league of powerful women — Caitlin Clark exploring the boundaries of the game like an abstract painter, Olivia Miles personifying the rebirth of slick, Breanna Stewart pulling out new tricks from her offensive ****** nal, A'ja Wilson shapeshifting nightly into a GOAT — feels less like a sport and more like a societal powder keg.
It has spiraled into a rinse-and-repeat drama.
A Black player clotheslines a White player, and it's time to flinch. An ejection ensues, and the banished player, unfortunately, finds her phone and straightaway posts on Threads, and we cringe. Then the predictable rants trend on social media apps and morning shows.
The WNBA has proved it can hold our eyeballs ever since "the Caitlin Clark effect" introduced a new audience to the game and generated blockbuster ratings. However, with more and more moments like Saturday's meltdown between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky, it's becoming exasperating.
And what is "it"?

Hilaria Baldwin says the biggest lesson she has learned from more than 15 years with Alec Baldwin comes down to one rule. Both people have to keep wanting the relationship.
"You both have to want to be there," Hilaria told Fox News Digital while reflecting on how she and Alec have navigated difficult periods together.
The couple met in February 2011 and married in June 2012. They have since welcomed seven children together while moving through what Hilaria described as the "ups," "downs" and "sideways" parts of a long-term relationship.
Hilaria shared the marriage advice while discussing her appearance on FOX's celebrity competition series Nation's Dumbest, and said the same principle now shapes what she tells friends who come to her with relationship problems.
Speaking with Fox News Digital, Hilaria pointed first to the length of her relationship with Alec. "Oh, it's been more than 15 years. We met February 2011," she said.

Mavericks have one big demand for any team wanting Daniel Gafford originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Dallas Mavericks center Daniel Gafford continues to find himself at the center of persistent trade speculation as the franchise reshapes its roster ahead of the 2026–27 season. However, the Mavericks have reportedly placed a significant asking price on the veteran big man ahead of the regular season.
Brett Siegel of Clutch Points has provided insight into what Dallas would want in exchange for Gafford. According to Siegel, the Mavericks are willing to explore trading the athletic center, but only if another team is prepared to send a first-round pick back to Dallas.
"Speaking of Gafford, the Mavs continue to signal that they will be very open to any deal involving Gafford that would net them a first-round pick," per Siegel.
Gafford has established himself as one of the NBA's most efficient finishers around the basket. He remains under contract through 2029 at an annual salary of $18.1 million, yet his name has continued to appear in offseason trade conversations.

Liverpool's search for defensive reinforcements continues to gather pace, and Djed Spence is increasingly becoming a name that refuses to disappear from the conversation. The Tottenham full back enjoyed an impressive campaign before enhancing his reputation on the international stage, leaving Liverpool with another important decision as Andoni Iraola reshapes his squad.
Recruitment rarely revolves around one outstanding tournament. Clubs invest months, sometimes years, in building profiles on players before deciding whether circumstances make a move worthwhile. In Spence's case, there appears to be enough evidence across club and international football to justify serious consideration.
Liverpool's interest in Djed Spence makes sense for several reasons. His ability to operate comfortably on either flank offers valuable flexibility, something every elite squad now prioritises across a demanding campaign.
Last season, Spence featured 23 times in the Premier League for Tottenham and added another eight appearances in the Champions League. More importantly, he demonstrated that he could adapt to different tactical demands while maintaining his athleticism and defensive discipline.
His performances earned him an England call up for the 2026 World Cup under Thomas Tuchel, an opportunity that further underlined how far his stock has risen.

Here is the paradox at the center of Broadway economics: the production that just broke the box-office record for a filmed stage musical was not built by anyone with the authority to greenlight it. It was built over 19 years by a Vermont folk singer who kept handing control to other people.
On the last weekend of July, the live capture of Hadestown opened on fewer than 2,000 screens. It took in $10.2 million, the largest opening ever recorded for a filmed Broadway musical, ahead of Hamilton. The distributor had booked it as a five-day event. Within 72 hours it announced an indefinite run. Its strongest per-screen results came from Huntsville, Salt Lake City, Eugene, and Boise: markets with no Broadway house at all.
I have spent a career focused on how the screen reshapes commerce—as President and CEO of The Museum of Television & Radio (now The Paley Center for Media), as Harvard Law School's inaugural Visiting Professor of Entertainment and Media Law, and as a management consultant on entertainment and media industry strategies. What Anaïs Mitchell built with Hadestown is the clearest working refutation I have seen of the instinct that destroys founder-led ventures in various market sectors.
The operational reality is unforgiving. A modern Broadway musical is a highly capitalized joint venture requiring upwards of $15 million against a weekly burn rate that can approach $700,000. The people who put up that money are not patrons of the arts. They are investors, and the directors, general managers, and marketing leads they hire are the operators who convert a creative vision into a going concern. Broadway posted the highest-grossing season in its history in 2025–2026, roughly $1.9 billion, and only six new musicals opened all year. More money is chasing fewer bets.
The industry's default bet is a famous name. Elton John's Tammy Faye and the Avett Brothers' Swept Away both took that bet recently, and both closed within weeks of opening. Neither was a failure of talent. Both were failures of organizational architecture. The creative founders believed that dominance in one market guaranteed fit in another, and they overruled the operators who knew better.

Chelsea are **** sing whether to step up their interest in Diogo Costa, with the Porto and Portugal goalkeeper increasingly viewed as a serious target for Xabi Alonso during this summer window. According to Mirror, the Chelsea head coach sees the 26-year-old as a potentially decisive addition as he reshapes key areas of his squad.
The thinking is clear. Chelsea have invested heavily in attacking talent, most notably with the arrival of Morgan Rogers for a British record £117million, and attention is now turning to the spine of the side. In that context, Costa stands out as one of the most established goalkeepers available on the market, with a strong reputation at both club and international level.
Photo IMAGO
Costa's situation is relatively straightforward by elite-market standards. He remains tied to Porto on a long-term deal, but that contract includes a €60million release clause. That figure is substantial for a goalkeeper, yet it also provides certainty, which clubs value when time is tight and priorities are fixed.
For Chelsea, that matters. Recruitment at Stamford Bridge has often involved long negotiations, layered structures and competition from rival clubs. A fixed clause creates a direct mechanism if they decide Costa is the right fit. The key question is whether Chelsea judge him to be worth moving for immediately, or whether they continue weighing alternative options before making a final call.

(Original Caption) Louisville, KY: The twin spires atop the stands at Churchill Downs Race Track remind all of the magic of Thoroughbred racing.
In an effort to help elevate Thoroughbred racing among the everyday sports fan, Churchill Downs and the New York Racing ****** ociation will launch a three-year-old championship series consisting of six races beginning in 2027. Starting on the first Saturday in May with the Kentucky Derby and culminating in September with a return to Churchill Downs, the idea is to promote a familiarity with fans as the top three-year-old horses are encouraged to compete and develop those rivalries that can add to the lore of the sport of kings. A prize of $5 million in bonus cash will be awarded to the runner that accumulates the most points throughout the series.

The world's most famous race, and perhaps race track, will bat leadoff in this newly proposed racing series on May 1, 2027. The Kentucky Derby has been contested every year since 1875 on that dirt oval in Louisville, Kentucky known as Churchill Downs. Restricted to three-year-olds only, the consistency of this event and the ever-building notoriety surrounding it has made it the focal point for fans of all shapes and sizes. In an effort to continue to cultivate the massive interest generated by the Derby, the Belmont Stakes at the newly renovated Belmont Park will be the next race in the series on June 5. The Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs will follow in early July and then the series will shift to historic Saratoga for the Jim Dandy Stakes (late July, early August) and Travers Stakes (late August). A final Championship race will be run in September back beneath the Twin Spires of Churchill Downs.
The dates for both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes are set and the other dates are to be finalized. ****** ing of races will be important as encouragement for participation in the six-race series in a five-month span. Of course, another encouraging factor is a proposed $5 million prize pool that will be awarded based on points accrued during the series. Each individual race will still carry its own purse as well.

As demand for artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes data centers, investors are hunting for infrastructure plays. Choosing between high-growth Astera Labs (NASDAQ:ALAB) and the established Arista Networks (NYSE:ANET) requires weighing explosive potential against proven scale.
Astera Labs focuses on specialized connectivity chips that eliminate bottlenecks within AI servers, while Arista Networks provides the broad networking switches and software that link those servers together. Comparing them highlights two different ways to profit from the massive shift toward high-performance computing and cloud infrastructure.
Astera Labs designs connectivity solutions that facilitate high-speed data transfers within AI infrastructure. It operates among semiconductor stocks, serving major cloud providers and GPU vendors through products like PCIe and CXL controllers. Customer concentration like this adds a layer of risk to the business, as one end customer represented roughly 70% of revenue in 2025.
In 2025, revenue reached nearly $852 million, which represents a massive year-over-year increase of approximately 115%. The company reported net income of roughly $219 million for the period. This marks a significant swing from the net loss reported in the previous fiscal year.
As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the current ratio is approximately 10.2x, which measures a company's ability to cover short-term obligations with current ***** ets. The company has essentially no debt.

Fantasy football draft season is upon us! Whether you're new to fantasy or have been playing for years, ******* yst Joel Smyth brings useful strategies that will help you this season. From No. 1 being the simplest to No. 10 being the most advanced, here are 10 tips to help you win your fantasy drafts.
This may be the simplest tip, but it is also the most important. Fantasy football has blossomed over the years and now comes in all shapes and sizes, and it's extremely important you know what shape and size your draft is. The difference between a Superflex 10-team league and a half-PPR 14-team league is night and day — more on scoring here. Find out every possible detail, how many teams are in the playoffs, how many starting spots per team, even what week your fantasy championship will be, and research from there.
Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2026 NFL season
It may be fun to draft a kicker in the 10th round, but it isn't very profitable. Fantasy is already unpredictable, and when it comes to these two positions, not only does that remain true, but there are endless options and the tiniest of edge to work for. Last season, the No. 1 fantasy defense was only a couple points better than the 12th-ranked team, and that 12th-ranked team went on to outscore the top team by a mile in the fantasy playoffs. Don't buy your lottery tickets early if the odds are the same later on.
It's tempting when you see four straight receivers being drafted in front of you to follow suit. For the most part, you shouldn't. If you love a player, or truly believe the tier continues, go for it; otherwise, panic usually leads to loss of value. Rather than getting the lowest of a position to follow the herd, taking the best player available elsewhere naturally leads to more overall value. If quarterbacks are flying early, be patient, and capitalize on the value at other positions while people reach for others.

Brentford are moving with intent in the market and Mamadou Sangaré has emerged as a leading target as the club reshapes its midfield ahead of the new season. According to L'Equipe, discussions with RC Lens are at an advanced stage over a deal worth €48m for the 24-year-old defensive midfielder.
The report points to a process that has been building quietly over recent weeks, with contact maintained between the clubs while Brentford prepare for the expected departure of Jordan Henderson, who is heading towards Chelsea. In that context, Sangaré appears to fit a clear recruitment brief, a midfielder capable of protecting the back line, covering ground and bringing authority in central areas.
Photo IMAGO
Sangaré's stock has risen sharply after an impressive Ligue 1 campaign. He played a major role in Lens putting together an excellent season, helping drive their push for Champions League qualification and contributing to their Coupe de France success. That form has placed him firmly on the radar of Premier League clubs, and Brentford seem to have acted decisively.
What stands out here is the level of progress. This does not read like early-stage interest or background admiration. With an agreement described as close, Brentford appear to be working towards the final steps of a significant signing, one that would represent a major investment at €48m.

A friend of mine offered an interesting question, mostly just to chat about for a little and move on but it’s been sticking in my mind for a while now. The question was who will be in last place in the Eastern Conference next season?
It’s been an interesting point to ponder on in the dead of summer. Not all the teams are particularly good, but no one is currently trying to be bad by punting the season through a long-term rebuilding strategy these days that has made themselves a poor team either. There are no Chicago’s or Calgary’s in the East these days that will drop far behind the pack and await what they hope will be a brighter future. All 16 teams in the East, to varying degrees, have the goal, desire and something of an expectation to make the playoffs next season.
That shapes up to mean chaos and fun. Take a look at last season – the three worst teams in the Eastern Conference ended up being Florida (the 2x defending Stanley Cup champions), Toronto (the team that finished second in points for the conference the year prior in 2024-25) and the New York Rangers (who were first in the East as recently as 2023-24).
That’s probably three teams that this time 12 months ago almost no one would have guessed would be at the bottom of the conference, although there were some warning signs with NYR and Aleksander Barkov’s preseason injury did impact the Panthers in a predictable way before the year started. If anything in the modern NHL, you might as well throw out the results of the prior year when attempting to forecast the future. The base of what has happened isn’t going to be a roadmap for what is to come, by and large for many teams.
Going off my preseason predictions, I would have had Philadelphia, Boston and Pittsburgh as the bottom-three teams in 2025-26, all of which you might notice made the playoffs. That’s pretty humbling to undertake the projection of who could be the worst in 2026-27.

Transfer windows thrive on the domino effect. One move triggers another, a sudden phone call reshapes two squads at once, and suddenly a frozen deal thaws out. Goodison Park might be about to benefit from exactly that kind of chain reaction. Tottenham full-back Djed Spence is firmly on the radar, and the key to unlocking his signature sits in north London.
According to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, via Transfer Feed, the whole situation hinges on Spurs completing a deal for Nottingham Forest defender Neco Williams. Speak to Wyness, and the picture becomes clear. If that deal crosses the line, Spence gets the green light to head to Merseyside.
Wyness ran things at Goodison between 2004 and 2009. He understands the mechanics of these negotiations. Now running a football consultancy advising elite teams, he can see a transfer chain taking shape. He believes Spurs might change their mind about whether they even need to fill the position, and that Spence himself looks ready for a fresh start somewhere else.
Spurs want Williams. That is the catalyst. Wyness thinks that if that specific piece falls into place, Spence will arrive at Everton at some stage this summer. It makes perfect sense. Football is transactional. One comes in, another departs. Tottenham are playing hardball over the fee, though. Separate reports show they want at least £40m to let him walk. Spence is locked into a contract until June 2029, meaning Peter Carrington holds all the leverage. Everton will have to find serious cash to get Tottenham to the negotiating table.
David Moyes has a massive problem to solve. Seamus Coleman has departed. The right-back slot is empty, exposed, and glaringly vulnerable. Anyone watching the back line last season could see the gap. Spence offers something Moyes loves: Versatility. He can play on the right or slot into the left-back role. He gives options. Managers crave that flexibility during a tough Premier League campaign.
