Employers aren't abandoning performance-based pay raises after all.
Following backlash over workplaces doling out across-the-board salary increases, also known as "peanut **** er" raises, rather than providing raises based on individual performance, more employers plan to step back from that practice next year.
The new data from compensation research firm Payscale shows employers are likely to favor more differentiated, merit-based pay. Just 32% of organizations are planning a peanut **** er pay increase approach in 2027, down from 36% that actually gave one in 2026. "That's a significant drop-off," Ruth Thomas, pay equity strategist at Payscale, told Yahoo Finance.
Even better: Average pay **** ps are expected to tick up. Employers plan a 3.5% average increase in 2027, up from 3.4% in 2026. That's on par with inflation but far below 2023, when workers scored pay hikes averaging 4.8%.
"We're starting to see some optimism — 30% of US organizations expect higher salary increases in 2027 from 2026," Thomas said.

The New York Giants, a bit thin in their secondary with nickel cornerback Dru Phillips ailing and cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse having been waived, could soon be adding help at that spot.

Chelsea's pre-season campaign was all about new manager Xabi Alonso but, in truth, the 56 hours spent travelling 24,561 miles by plane had been organised long before his appointment in May.
The Blues travelled further and longer than any other Premier League club, almost twice as much as during last season's US tour under former boss Enzo Maresca, visiting Sydney, Hong Kong and Jakarta before finishing in Iskandar Puteri, Malaysia, on Sunday.
It was tiring for many, not least Alonso, but that did not stop him setting standards by running off the jetlag at a remarkable pace of four minutes 30 seconds per kilometre alongside members of the club staff.

Former New England Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday afternoon, joining a star-studded 2026 class.
Vinatieri finally got the call to the hall, earning it after a successful career in the NFL. A lot of his time was spent in New England, where he was a part of three Super Bowl teams under head coach Bill Belichick. He was a key piece to those teams and had the game-winning kick in Super Bowl ******* VI.
During his speech, Vinatieri thanked countless coaches and players throughout his career. When he got to Belichick, he started with praise but then poked fun at his former head coach through a joke.
"I thought it was because training camp had already started," Vinatieri said about Belichick's absence, "but in truth it's because he is judging his girlfriend's cheerleading competition."

CHICAGO — Leaning against the wall in a United Center tunnel Saturday afternoon, Sophie Cunningham reflected on the emerging truth of her existence: Sometimes she seeks the spotlight, and the rest of the time, the spotlight seeks her.
"Another day, another dollar, welcome to my life, boys and girls," the Indiana Fever guard declared.
It should surprise no one, of course, that Cunningham took a hard foul in a 90-86 win over the Chicago Sky and then elected to give as good as she got. The arm-to-the-neck she absorbed from the Sky's DiJonai Carrington on a first-quarter layup attempt, which resulted in Carrington's ejection, was just the start.
"From my point of view, I mean, clearly I think it was unnecessary," Cunningham said after the game. "I've never really spoken to her and have no beef with her. But I guess she has some pent-up stuff. So get your s— off. That's fine. I can take it."
Cunningham immediately popped up, pushed Carrington and was restrained by teammate Makalya Timpson while exchanging words. ("I'm not going to let anyone just do that to me, I think everyone knows that," Cunningham said.) Carrington was **** sed a Flagrant 2 foul, but Cunningham wasn't hit with a technical foul for the shove because officials "deemed her reaction to the severity of the contact to be acceptable," per a pool report distributed after the game.

It took Carson Kvapil 64 races to earn his first NASCAR O'Reilly Series victory, but he has now won back-to-back after triumphing at Iowa Speedway.
JR Motorsports teammate Ross Chastain led most of the final run, but a caution with five laps to go completely changed the complexion of the race.
Chastain spun the tires in the first overtime restart, allowing Kvapil to move ahead. Right behind them, Brent Crews slid up into Ryan Sieg and Justin Allgaier, wrecking all three cars and collecting several others. That led to a post-race confrontation between Allgaier and Crews.

Despite many public hopes that the WNBA would be able to return to basketball, two fouls during Saturday's game between the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky essentially ensured that the media cycle the league has been stuck in for the past two weeks would continue.

Saturday at Iowa Speedway was big for the underdogs, as driver/owner Ryan Sieg earned his first-ever pole as a NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series driver.
Driving the No. 39 RSS Racing Chevrolet, Sieg went to the top of the charts with a 23.966s lap at Iowa, 0.064s clear of Ross Chastain in second. Chastain led a fleet of JR Motorsports cars, with Carson Kvapil third, Rajah Caruth fourth, and Justin Allgaier fifth.
"It's been a long time," said Sieg as the small team celebrated. "Everything seems to be clicking. We've been working super hard at the shop, trying to come together with the Haas Factory Team and the alliance. It's finally coming together for us. And it's a special day as it's my mom's birthday, so this is a nice payoff right here for her and I. So hopefully we stay out front all day, and we get to Victory Lane in our SciAps Chevrolet."
The difference came in Sieg's momentum through Turns 3/4, nailing the exit in a way none could match. Several drivers drew even with him down the backstretch, but quickly faded through the final set of corners.
Sieg didn't think it was a pole lap while behind the wheel, and wasn't even sure what he did do different to be that far ahead. "I really don't -- I thought it was just an okay lap. I was tight, actually, at the exit, but I couldn't roll the middle and get into the gas like I thought i needed to. But ****** , it was good enough to get pole here in Iowa."

Indiana Fever guard sparked one of the defining controversies of 2026 when her comments on transgender athletes participating in women's sports were published in an ESPN profile on her on July 21.
"I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I'm like, 'I never once said that,'" Cunningham told ESPN. "I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men."

Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes Bhuvneshwar ******* ar's lack of regular 50-over and first-class cricket could prove to be a major hurdle if he is to force his way into India's plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
While praising the veteran seamer's performances in the IPL, Chopra said preparing for a 50-over World Cup requires sustained workload management, something that cannot be achieved by playing only T20 cricket.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra was asked about the World Cup prospects of both Bhuvneshwar ******* ar and Mohammad Shami.
"One thing goes against Bhuvi. I love him to bits, and I want him to play for India again, but when you don't play Ranji, your workload becomes limited. There are a handful of matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. In ODI cricket, you have to bowl 10 overs and field for 50 overs in a match. It's a lot of workload."
Bhuvneshwar has not featured in a first-class match since January 2024 and last played a List A game in December 2023. Despite that, he has enjoyed an impressive run with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, playing a key role in their back-to-back IPL ******* le-winning campaigns.
Chopra stressed that excelling in the IPL alone should not be the basis for selection in a 50-over World Cup.
"It's not easy in a tournament like the World Cup where you have to keep playing continuously. Not only the World Cup, but you will have to be a part of every ODI game from a year earlier. You will have to start playing him from now on."
According to Chopra, if the selectors are serious about including Bhuvneshwar in their long-term plans, they need to bring him back into the ODI setup immediately.
"He is not a bad option, but it will be a mistake unless we give him at least one year to get ready. If you pick someone for the 50-over World Cup based on him bowling four overs in the two months of the IPL and a month of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, no matter how good that person is, it will be wrong."
He also suggested that Bhuvneshwar should feature in the upcoming ODI series and even the T20I ******* ignments if he remains under consideration for the 2027 World Cup.
Comparing Bhuvneshwar with Mohammad Shami, Chopra felt the latter currently has a stronger case because he has continued playing red-ball cricket, including the Ranji Trophy, where he claimed 37 wickets. Shami is also set to feature in the upcoming Duleep Trophy.
However, Chopra maintained that Bhuvneshwar had the better IPL season.
"It's the same thing for Shami, although he has played the Ranji Trophy and picked up 37 wickets. He is going to play the Duleep Trophy now as well. So Shami has a slightly better case to make, but the truth is that if we do man-to-man marking in the IPL, Bhuvneshwar ******* ar is ahead of him in that respect."

According to reports, five Wall Street firms have already signed up for the service, gaining access to Truth Social posts milliseconds before the general public.

Because Trump owns roughly 41% of the company's shares, he stands to directly profit from the new recurring revenue stream. At five subscribers alone, the service would generate about $500,000 in monthly revenue, or $6 million annually.
That figure is modest by the standards Trump has set since returning to the White House. His 2025 financial disclosure showed his businesses generated more than $2 billion in personal income last year—nearly quadruple his 2024 total—with the bulk flowing from ventures that sit directly at the intersection of his office and his balance sheet.
