Aug 9 (Reuters) - Taylor Farms said on Sunday it was recalling prepared food items containing jalapeños from retailers over concerns about potential salmonella contamination, a few weeks after removing lettuce from Mexico that U.S. authorities linked to the cyclospora parasite.
The California-based supplier said it had voluntarily recalled the products, including salsas and guacamole, after being notified that Coast Citrus Distributors was recalling the fresh peppers.
Taylor said in a statement it was no longer sourcing from a farmer in Sinaloa, Mexico, that was identified as the potential source of the salmonella outbreak.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said earlier this week they were investigating the salmonella outbreak, which had sickened 345 people across 27 states and led to 36 hospitalizations.
The U.S. investigation identified restaurants including Chipotle Mexican Grill and Qdoba, a Mexican-style restaurant chain, as having received jalapeños imported by Coast Citrus Distributors. Both restaurants stopped using them, while Coast Citrus recalled the remaining product and notified customers.

Health officials are investigating jalapenos served at Chipotle restaurants as a possible source of a recent salmonella outbreak, the company confirmed to ABC News on Tuesday.
Chipotle told ABC News the ingredient was distributed to several food service retailers across multiple states. The company said it removed the jalapenos from select restaurants.

"We have a robust ingredient traceability system and, upon learning of a potential Salmonella outbreak in the supply chain impacting several food service retailers, we proactively identified jalapenos as a potential common ingredient from a common lot, removed them from the restaurants where they had been distributed, and replaced them with product from different growers," Laurie Schalow, Chipotle's chief corporate affairs and food safety officer, said in a statement.
Salmonella are bacteria that can cause a common foodborne illness called salmonellosis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Infections tend to occur more in the summer, when warmer weather presents ideal conditions for the bacteria to grow, the agency states.

The FDA classified the voluntary recall as a Class I recall, its highest risk category, on July 1. According to the agency, a Class I recall means there is "a reasonable probability" that consuming or being exposed to the affected product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
The chips were first recalled in May by Utz Quality Foods, a subsidiary of Utz Brands, after the company learned that a seasoning made with dry milk powder supplied by a third-party manufacturer could potentially contain salmonella. Though the affected seasoning batches tested negative before being used, Utz said it issued the recall out of an abundance of caution.
The company has said it has received no reports of illnesses linked to the recalled products.
Consumers who have the affected chips should not eat them and should throw them away. Retailers have also been instructed to remove the products from store shelves.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, the dairy ingredients were voluntarily recalled on April 20 due to possible contamination.
More than a dozen products have already been affected, though additional recalls could still be announced. Walmart is among the companies to have issued a product recall, for its Blackstone Parmesan Ranch seasoning.
